First, you’ve got to know what you’re doing…

If you repeat the same activity over and over, that’s a process.

Why flowchart it?What are you doing?

What are you doing that you don’t need to do?

What do you want to happen in the same way every time?

Can someone from the outside come in and begin working the way you want them to without instruction?

RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP Rationale: Each year thousands of grant opportunities are announced that could benefit MDC.  Annually, the staff of Resource Development processes well

over 100 proposals.  Yet many opportunities are not pursued.   This course is designed  to increase the percentage of awarded grants by removing the two primary barriers to grant success:  1) Lack of sufficient time to refine proposals; and 2) Lack of sufficient grant writing skills to prepare competitive proposals.

Audience:  This  opportunity  is  open  to  all  administrators,  faculty,  and  staff  upon  recommendation  of  the  Campus  President  or  supervising  District administrator.  Persons recommended must identify, in collaboration with site leadership, the manner in which participation in this course will provide benefits to the Campus and the College.  In addition, supervisors must  indicate approval of 40 hours of participant’s work time to be dedicated to on‐site  immersion  in the offices of Resource Development during the semester.

Workshop Description:  The internship has two 40‐hour, semester‐long components:  semester one consists of intensive one‐on‐one grant writing tutorials provided on‐site at  the department of Resource Development.  Interns will  increase  their knowledge of how  to write awardable proposals by partnering with Resource Development grantwriters to experience the process in the same manner as these professionals.   Semester two consists of follow‐up tutorials in which participants are guided through the development of a grant proposal of their choosing.  At their home‐base, participants will use the outline authored in semester one  to develop a complete grant proposal.   Their grant writer partner  from  semester one will mentor  them  through  the process and help  them  to develop a proposal of fundable quality.

 Part I  Part II

Objectives: As a result of successfully completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

Find funding opportunities  Assess organizational capacity  Match funder preference with site needs  Create broad community partnerships  Conduct research to support grant writing process   Create templates for Letters of Commitment  Modify templates for common grant sections  Avoid common proposal weaknesses  Complete required forms that accompany grant proposals  Submit grant proposals   Create an outline for a grant proposal to be written in Part II

Objectives:   As a  result of  successfully  completing  this workshop, participants will be  able  to author a grant proposal using all skills acquired in Part I, including:  Coordinate the proposal development process Develop grant proposal sections:

‐Abstract  ‐Strategies ‐Need ‐Timeline‐Project design ‐Key Personnel‐Management plan  ‐Dissemination ‐Goals  ‐Evaluation ‐Objectives   ‐Sustainability   ‐Budget

Plan of  Evaluation:    Participants will  produce  a  bibliography of  research  to support grant proposals, draft  samples of grant  section  response  templates, and an outline of a competitive grant proposal for a project of their choosing.

Plan of Evaluation:  Participants will produce and submit a substantially fundable grant proposal for a project of their choosing.

Self plagiarismTHE AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION (2010) explains how plagiarism differs from self-plagiarism:

“Whereas plagiarism refers to the practice of claiming credit for the words, ideas, and concepts of others, self-plagiarism refers to the practice of presenting one’s own previously published work as though it were new” (pg. 170).

As Roig (2006) suggests, self-plagiarism occurs “when authors reuse their own previously written work or data in a ‘new’ written product without letting the reader know that this material has appeared elsewhere” (pg. 16). Roig identifies a few types of self-plagiarism:• Republishing the same paper that is published elsewhere without notifying the reader nor publisher of the journal• Publishing a significant study as smaller studies to increase the number of publications rather than publishing one large study

• Reusing portions of a previously written (published or unpublished text)
