Exam Unit

For my exam unit I will be looking at the theme‘ ’. Ways of Seeing This is because I am very interested

in the perception of reality and the way we look at . everyday things By just altering the settings on a

, camera the image can vastly change into something, different like a foreground blending with a

. , background Using these settings you can adjust .anything that you want

Camera Settings

, ’ By using the camera settings to my advantage I plan on recreating some of Rachael Sudlow s‘ ’ ’ . Cowscapes and some of Bill Brandt s close up work They both make it seem like there is a

. landscape in front of you using the settings of the camera to trick the eye This is because all of , . the image is in focus by using a high numbered aperture This means that shutter speed will

, . be longer but will make the foreground and background in focus When using a low .numbered aperture the foreground is primarily in focus and the background is out of focus

– F number3.2

– F number9

Rachael Sudlow

. I plan on looking at the photographer Rachael Sudlow She has portrayed a landscape image , . .using the back of an animal usually a cow This set of images were aptly named Cowscapes

. ( - ) These are two images from the Cowscapes set The aperture f number is very high in, . both to make the whole thing in focus I will attempt to make my own versions of these

.but using buildings to make the landscape

These images are very interesting as they portray a landscape using objects that

' . aren t associated The textures and composition

make the image into an optical illusion as it is unclear what you are looking

.at

Bill Brandt

, . I also plan on looking at Bill Brandt who did a similar project to Sudlow But instead of , . looking at animals he used the human body to blend in with the surroundings He also used a

- .high f number to make the whole thing in focus

. , These are two images from his close up set The image on the left is of an ear but could . - , easily be mistaken for a pebble or a stone on the beach In an image with a low f number

. the cliffs in the background would be out of focus The image on the right is of crossed legs , .or arms but could be a rock formation or mountains

- The de saturation of these images gives them a better

effect then if they were in. colour This is so they fit in

, with the surroundings whereas if they were in

, colour the body parts would .stand out

– My Plans Ray Metzker

. I will create a final piece to do with my chosen theme Ways of Seeing This will be created , . after doing research on various other photographers to see their techniques My work will

. question perception and confuse the mind I will try to recreate the work of Ray Metzker and .make a pattern by using the silhouette of a building in a grid like formation

, . By recreating these images using my own I will confuse the perception of the human eye I . will making a set of images small enough to blend together to make one giant pattern This .will be difficult but achievable

These are very interesting images as they question the mind and

. trick it into seeing something else At first glance it looks like a

, unique pattern but if you look, closely you can see a number of .images arranged in a certain way

This is a mock up of . what I plan on doing These are images taken from the

internet that have , been cropped rotated

and placed in a grid. formation The idea is

to have between – twenty thirty images aligned in the same

, way so that one image .is not recognisable
