Sintra:
Located right in the central western Portuguese coast, just a short
drive from Lisbon, Sintra, Portugal is steeped in history and offers
some of the most exquisite natural and architectural sites in the
country.
Kilometer after kilometer, verdant hills and pastureland went their
way northwest from Lisbon, out of the Tagus estuary and up
towards Sintra, nestled in the rolling hills and peaks of the Sintra
mountain range. Here, at the northern-most extent of the
protected Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, history, archaeology,
architecture and natural beauty combine to create a compelling
and enduring centerpiece that has enjoyed centuries of popularity.
Visitors fill the hotels in Sintra year after year, flocking from all
over Portugal and beyond to experience and explore this living
architectural museum and soak up the ambience of Portuguese rich
and vibrant past – and future.

Palácio Nacional da Pena
The Pena Palace, or Palacio da Pena as it is known in Portugal, is
perhaps one of the most iconic and most photographed palace in
Sintra. Perched high on a hilltop above the romantic town of
Sintra. It is one of the best examples of nineteenth-century
Romantic architecture anywhere on the continent. The Pena Palace
can be seen from as far away as Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, on a
clear and sunny day, some thirty kilometers to the east.
The Pena Palace is more than worthy of its UNESCO World Heritage
designation and is one of the officially recognized Seven Wonders
of Portugal.
Social program on Monday 16/09
The Palacio da Pena dates back to the Middle Ages when it took the
form of a chapel perched high on the hill overlooking Sintra. It was
adopted as something of a pilgrimage site destination and
sanctuary by Portuguese rulers in the fifteenth century, first by
King John II and later by King Manuel I, who had a monastery
constructed on the site, though it was sadly all-but ruined in the
devastating earthquake of 1755.
It was King Ferdinand who brought new life to the estate in the
nineteenth century when he transformed the ruins into the breath-
taking and unique palace that stands on the site today, the first
and greatest of its type in the world. The palace became a favorite
retreat with several generations of the Portuguese royal family,
who headed for the cool hills of Sintra each year to escape the
heat during the peak summer months.
Social program on Monday 16/09
Following the 1910 Republican Revolution, the Palacio da Pena was opened to
the public as a national museum and not surprisingly, quickly became one of
the country’s most visited monuments. It is the beguiling combination of its
history, architectural heritage, the sand and pastel colors of the exterior and
its majestic position, emerging from the lush greenery and towering over the
town and hills of Sintra, that make the palace such as must-see destination.

Guincho (Praia do Guincho)
Is a popular Atlantic beach located on Portugal's Estoril coast, 5 km from the
town of Cascais.
This wide stretch of golden sandy beach is one of the largest in the area.
Backed by wild dunes and flanked by rocks on either side it offers the perfect
combination of flat beach, ideal for sand-based fun and wild waters, perfect
for surfing. Bordered by several well-known restaurants this is the perfect
spot to relax and take stock of your surroundings over a memorable meal of
freshly caught fish or seafood.
This beach was famously featured in the pre-titles sequence of the James Bond film On
Her Majesty's Secret Service, wherein James Bond rescues Contessa Teresa de Vicenzo
from a suicide attempt and foils off two attackers in the surf; the beach still looks as it
did in 1969.
In the 90's, Guincho was one of the locations for the windsurfing world cup.
Today, several sporting events are held at Guincho regularly, including the
Portuguese National Surfing and BodyBoarding Championships.
