Poses and the overall appearance of Jazz and Pop

stars

Page 2: Presentation Done

Pixie Lott is a pop star bringing in the pop elements of Japop. You can evidently see how, similarly to Pixie Lott Jess’ character has her eyes looking up to the sky. This pose gives out a very fun and playful ambiance, reinforcing the certain characteristics from both sides of the genre hybrid. Also perhaps providing a sense of mystery, provoking questions as to what is being stared at. These images appear to be very informal and different. In the modern appearance as being portrayed by Pixie it is easy to see that it is not as restricted as the traditional jazz image. Her hairstyle and use of jewellery are very modern and exciting aptly informing those who see the image, that this artist’s genre is different, fun and her age is more likely to target a younger audience. Both of these images are very modern and interesting close ups.

However the fact that Jess is smiling can link to both Pop and the previous image, reinforcing the happier appearance of Pop and causing intrigue as to what is being stared at. Michael’s attire of a shirt and tie accompanied by a zip up jacket has a mixed outlook in relation to the genre. To clarify, the shirt and tie are much more traditional and linked to the old fashioned view of Jazz, whereas the large knot of the tie and zip up jacket are those styles which are commonly found in modern day times, some of which can actually be associated to Pop itself.

Michael Buble is obviously a Jazz/Big Band performer, this pose relates to Jazz as it expresses a very suave and sophisticated idea. Jazz is evidently an older genre, so therefore is known for it’s maturity. Plus the dark clothes he is wearing are very simplistic, not unlike Jazz itself. The character of Jess, shares this idea of sophistication, when mimicking this particular pose. The fact that she is stood not directly facing the camera suggests being moody, which can be linked to the idea of Jazz and the Moody Blues.

Julie London, obviously is from an old era, this pose is also very simple and discloses a more fun, enjoyable vibe due to her happy facial expression. Once again the deep colours suggest maturity, the lack of jewels reinforce the characteristic of simplicity and finally the hairstyle which is fairly uncommon in old fashioned Jazz stars, as it is not pulled back into an up do, her hair down instead. Which can actually be linked to pop as that is a common preference of hairstyle. The Sitting stance adds levels making the image more interesting and the style of the dress dates the image providing a traditional vibe.

Jess once again is smiling in this image, which is commonly related to pop and in certain instances such as this one, related to Jazz also. Similarly to this image of Julie, Jess has most of her hair down which can be linked to the modern day styles.

This image depicts the fun side of pop. Cheryl Cole seems to be enjoying herself similarly to Jess. Their poses may not be exactly the same, however certain features are. For example both models are looking toward the camera rather than in any other direction, plus they are both smiling. The evident use of pink in both Cheryl’s and Jess’ attire, relates to pop as it is commonly known for its portrayal of girlie pinks, purples and other vibrant

colours. Referring back to what I previously wrote, the hair down links to the modern era which Pop is from and the more informal atmosphere it presents. Differing slightly to the image of Julie London, Cheryl Cole’s image has the use of jewellery in the form of earrings and decoration featured on her dress, once again giving an insight to the more fun and less simplistic Pop ambiance.

The image of Cheryl Cole really aptly portrays the hybrid and the different characteristics of Japop. The poses are very similar, these images both demonstrate maturity, the way in which they are hardly smiling once again can be related to the moody side of Jazz.

Both of their hairstyles are down, however, while Cheryl Cole looks directly at the camera Jess stares

out into space, once again causing intrigue as to what is being stared at. There is an evident mixture of the genres concerned throughout. This pop star is portraying a very mature, toned down and serious pose. This sophistication can be linked to Jazz as well as the colour scheme concerned in Cheryl’s image. The dark colours used reinforce maturity and the sparse traditional outlooks upon Jazz. While the hairstyle an be related to the modern era and pop. In this image it becomes evident that there are no articles of jewellery present relating once again to Jazz, however Jess does happen to be wearing a necklace, relating to the common Pop image.

As Norah Jones is a modern Jazz artist the appearance, idea and pose has altered slightly. The fact that Norah is smiling can be compared to the Pop genre and the idea of modern times. The colour scheme being portrayed of the deeper colours can be linked to both Jazz and Modern pop, For example clothes

worn by Pop artists such as; The Saturdays. The smile that these images both have in common is not huge and dazzling, which is commonly related to pop, however it is more timid and

natural, similarly to the image of Julie London. Both Norah and Jess are staring directly at the camera which creates the vibe of intensity which can also be linked to the traditional Jazz representation, like with the image of Michael Buble. In both these images there is jewellery present putting a modern twist upon the Jazz ambiance.

This image gives the traditional jazz appearance a fun vibe. The smile being portrayed on Billie Holiday’s face, adds another characteristic to those of Jazz, of happiness and being able to enjoy yourself. Jess’ pose is very similar to Billie’s as they are both smiling fondly, with their hands to their chins and at the same time looking in a completely different

direction, as in many of the other images of both Jazz and Pop artists. They both look as if they are having a good time and enjoying their music. This Jazz image differs slightly from the other traditional images as Billie is wearing a substantial amount of jewellery, making it a more of a showy outfit. However similarly to the Jazz stereotype, she is wearing dark mature clothes accompanied by an up hair do. Suggesting sophistication.
