brought bitter disappointment. Only a small percentage of the captives had returned; and these returned to a scene of complete desolation and not a little opposition. Their great hopes reflected in Isaiah 40-66 had not been realized. This accounts for the extremes of emotions exhibited in the The psalmist moves from gratitude (vv. 1-3) through disappointment (vv. 4-7) to a conditioned, but glad assurance (vv. 8-13). In the second section (vv. 4-7) there is an earnest appeal, a fervent prayer. This is capsulized in our text: "Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?" (v. 6).

People ask the same question today, only rephrased: Is revival coming? Religious books and articles are very much occupied with this vital question. it appropriate to expect a revival?

The answer cannot be yes or no, because the coming of revival will be of God. Nonetheless, th re are certain earmarks in God's show

I. There must be information

A. W must know what revival is. is a work of the Spirit among God's own people whereby they get right with God and with each other" (Vance, Havner, Repent or Else! Westwood, N.J., Revell, 1958, p. 14). To revive a fire on the hearth you don't start a new fire; you simply stir up the live coals already there. You free them from the smothering ashes, fuel, and an them into flame. It has been said that revival is not a thing, it is a person. When we pray for revival, we are not pleading for a thing, but for the Lord. We need Him!

B. must know that God is at the door. He is ready to send revival. Why doesn't He? Second Chronicles 7: 14 gives us the reason. We have neither umbled ourselves, nor nor sought His face, nor turned from our wicked ways. The church in Laodicea needed a revival, but she didn't know it. The Spirit sternly but derly rebuked her and reminded her that the Lord was at the door (Rev. 3:20). He is at the door of His churches today.

I . There must be realization Before revival comes, God's people must clear

two things. A. is God's people who need to b psalmist prays,

"Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?" (v. 6) The very word presupposes the presence of life. We do not speak of reviving a dead man. We revive those who are alive but appear to be dead. It is God's people who need to be revived.

ualities of the early church, which was living in the power of the Holy Spirit demonstrate this.

1. Its vigorous corporate prayer life. They believed in the shared prayer of God's people. When Peter and John were arrested in the temple and were subsequently tried, threatened, and released, they reported to the assembled church what had happened. The church immediately engaged in prayer, not to be kept safe , but to be given the power to ·speak [God's] word with all boldness" (Acts 4:29 The first

organization within the church came into being to relieve the leaders of

administrative details that they might have time to pray 6: 1-7). Is our church more of an organization than a praying community?

2. Its fearless and faithful witness. The Savior was preached and the faith propagated. Every member was a missionary and an evangelist. They witnessed to the risen Christ.

is God who does the reviving."Wilt thou not revive us again?" the psalmist prays. We are agreed, formally at least , that revival must come from God. But is that the presupposition in all our plans and preparation? Is not our emphasis largely on people? Do we not feel that the moment the church decides to snap out of it, revival will come? To , meet the conditions for revival's coming is ut em r j s Go

only God sends it. • • I "' ~

III. There must be expectation ~ .,,;;;.., · Before revival comes there must be in the hearts of God' s people the

faith that revival will come. There must be a sense of expectation. When we plan revival meetings, do we expect anything to happen?

When the foundation for the restored temple was laid after the return from Babylon, the youth who had been born in Babylon shouted jubilantly, ut many of the old men who had seen the temple of Solomon in all its glory wept zra 3: 10-f3J. ny true Christian has ever seen a real, Spirit-blessed revival among God's is hungry in his ea to

~ ,,, ' Conclusion. Do we pray for the day w en will weep with conviction? Do we pray for the day when believers will seek to be reconciled to one another? Do we pray for the day members of churches will be mightily filled with the Holy Spirit and will go out in the Spirit's power seeking to witness to lost neighbors and friends? If we do thiswhen we do this-God will answer our prayers. Revival will come.
