Context

The development of a Custom Portal or Nodes Portal Toolkit has been identified as a need by the Nodes since 2003

Workshop held in Copenhagen in 2005

Efforts at that time focused in developing http://data.gbif.org

NPT Development: A participatory process

Need is identified by the community

Preliminary assessmentCapturing specific requirements

• Exactly what is needed?• By whom?• How this would relate to existing developments?• Is this already included in the GBIF Work Programme?Defining an implementation

plan – community development?Alpha and beta testing processesTake up and roll over – full implementation

Developing a Nodes Portal Toolkit – Preliminary Survey Results

Development of NPT key activity in the Work Programme 2009-2010

Online survey designed to assess needs and priorities for NPT

26 GBIF Participants responded: 21 countries, 5 international organisations – LOW RESPONSE

Provide access to information about people and organisations

Ecological data search and visualisation (e.g. using filters such as ecosystem type, habitat, seasonality, and other ecological traits)

Access to basic analytical tools (e.g. species distribution models)

Thematic filters (search data for threatened species, invasive species, pollinators, fresh water organisms, etc.)

Data resource search (looking for a specific dataset or data originator)

Species level data search (to browse and search species pages)

Metadata catalogue functionality (e.g. browsing metadata records, or looking for datasets based on metadata descriptions)

Upload and download data on the categories above (use the box below to comment on preferred formats)

Provide access to relevant data served by other GBIF Participants

Access to data served only by data holders within the domain of the Participant Node

Taxonomic search (browsing data by taxonomic names, checklists, etc.)

Geospatial search (looking for data on a specific region or geographical area, or by using geospatial filters)

General Recommendations

1. Present and discuss these preliminary results with the Nodes Committee at the GB16 Meeting in Copenhagen.

2. Use the Copenhagen meeting to get general feedback from those Participants who didn´t respond to the survey. The objective will be to get more accurate information about the number of Participant Nodes who need or are interested in a Nodes Portal Toolkit.

General Recommendations

3. Convene an Advisory Nodes Committee group to help define the scope of the NPT (within the context of the GBIF Informatics Infrastructure and according to the Participants’ needs). This advisory group will work with the Secretariat staff in producing:

a) A scoping document for the NPT (focusing on the more general and strategic aspects), plus a first set of specific requirements for the NPT development

b) A set of recommendations on how to develop, implement and deploy such a portal toolkit.
