The International Baccalaureate Programme is a rigorous course of study designed to meet the needs of highly motivated secondary students and to promote international understanding. The effectiveness of the IB programme is due not only to the depth of the individual courses, but also to the comprehensive nature of the programme. Unlike other honors programs, the IB Programme requires each student to take courses in six academic areas. To qualify for the International Baccalaureate Diploma, students must take examinations in six subject areas, participate in the Creativity, Action, and Service program, and write an extended essay during the 11th and 12th grade years.
The diploma candidate must also take a unique course known as Theory of Knowledge. In this course, students explore the connections and similarities between the various subjects, learn to think critically, and apply interrelated concepts. Students earning the IB Diploma are awarded 24 college credit hours at many Texas Universities and many students earn advanced college credit at prestigious universities around the world. Many highly competitive colleges and universities recognize the IB Diploma for admissions and/or advanced standing.
Aldine ISD students enter the Pre-IB Diploma Preparatory Programme at Eisenhower High School their 10th grade year. IB students may also participate in the Advanced Placement (AP) Program in grades 11 and 12.
Passport to the World
IB Curriculum
Six subject groups comprise the core of the IB curriculum. The IB Diploma candidate is required to select one subject from each of the six areas. The Pre-IB Diploma Preparatory student will follow a similar course selection.
At least three and not more than four of the six subjects are taken at the Higher Level (HL) (two-year course which equals 240 teaching hours) and the others taken at Standard Level (SL) (one or two-year course which has a minimum of 150 teaching hours). Each examined subject is graded on a scale of 1 (minimum) to 7 (maximum). The award of the Diploma requires a minimum total of 24 points and successful completion of TOK, CAS, and the Extended Essay.

What’s In It For You?
The best high school preparation for college anywhere – an education that meets worldwide standards of excellence. Students who earn the International Baccalaureate Diploma are usually admitted to universities with college credit and, in many cases, sophomore standing. The state of Texas awards 24 semester hours at any state supported college or university to students who earn an IB Diploma with a minimum score of a 4 on a 7 point scale on each of the six exams represented in that student’s diploma.

We encourage students who want to challenge themselves academically to seriously consider making application to our International Baccalaureate Programme. In order to help each student (and his/her parents) make a realistic decision about pursuing the IB program, we have provided a profile of what we believe would be a successful IB student.
The successful International Student would... ... be self-motivated and family supported (the desire to
pursue and succeed in the IB Programme must ultimately come from within the student);
... have a desire to challenge him/herself intellectually and academically (someone who just wants to “get by” or who is “going through the motions” to get into college will be uncomfortable in an IB environment);
... be a competent reader (so as not to struggle with more difficult reading in IB courses, the student should be reading at or above his or her respective grade level);
... speak and write in English language clearly and effectively (since English is the primary language of the IB programme at Eisenhower High School and since the IB Programme demands clear and effective communication skills across the curriculum, this asset is essential to all IB students);
... possess (or be wiling to acquire) analytical/critical- thinking skills (since much of the IB curriculum requires investigative and discovery learning, these skills are essential);
... have proficient written and oral skills in either French or Spanish (it is required that all IB language students will have completed four or five years of study in a second language);

Both students and parents need to realize that the IB Diploma Programme may not be for every student. Although IB teachers are committed to helping all their students succeed, they will not be able to significantly alter their courses to accommodate those students who are unwilling to maintain the necessary pace or rigor. All IB students must be prepared
for the IB exam(s) given in May. The student who has demonstrated adequate past academic performance, who is highly motivated, and who has acquired good time and stress management skills should succeed in his/her IB courses.

It is with this intent that we proudly offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at Eisenhower High School. The ultimate goal of the IB Programme is for students to complete the requirements for all four years and earn the IB Diploma in addition to the state of Texas / AISD diploma.

Admission Requirements
• A record of academic performance: passing all TAKS tests; passing grades in all core areas; no more than two “C” averages.
• Two years of a foreign language • Satisfactory conduct: an “S” average. • Three teacher recommendations: one English; one math; one
subject of student’s choice. • Acceptable performance on an essay written by the
applicant in his or her own handwriting. Essay must demonstrate the ability to think and write clearly, correctly, purposefully, and logically.
• A contract of commitment: acknowledges that the IB Diploma Programme is demanding and requires commitment on the part of the student. The student contract is signed by the student and parent.
• Interview by the admissions committee for any student not meeting the admissions criteria.
General Requirements
• The IB Programme admissions committee will review and select students for lottery eligibility.
• Students must maintain a 75 (“C”) or better in order to remain in an IB course.
• Students must remain in an IB course for an entire year unless the student requests to drop the course at semester break or is withdrawn from the course due to failure.
• Students who drop or are removed from an IB course may not continue in IB courses within that content area in subsequent years; nor will they receive an IB Diploma upon graduation.
• Students may not withdraw from an IB level course after the first two weeks of school. They must remain for the full semester.
• Any form of cheating is not tolerated and will eventually lead to the student’s removal from the IB Programme.

What is the International Baccalaureate Programme?
It is a demanding college preparatory course of study that leads to examinations prepared by the International Baccalaureate Organization for all IB schools worldwide.
Why is Eisenhower High School the only senior high school that has the IB Programme in Aldine?
The superintendent wanted a programme that would offer the students of Eisenhower High School a second choice of challenging academic programs. The IB programme is a programme that is not only rigorous and well respected nationally, but one that has gained international recognition as a complete, well-rounded liberal arts education.
Who is the programme designed for?
It is designed for highly motivated students who seek the challenge of a well rounded, liberal arts, international curriculum.
How many years does it take to earn the IB Diploma?
The program is a comprehensive two-year international curriculum that begins at the eleventh-grade. Students prepare and gain the edge for the program by entering the Pre-IB Diploma Preparatory Programme at Eisenhower High School.
What is the IB curriculum’s focus?
Humanities and sciences. Diploma candidates must select one subject from each of the six IB groups: Language A1, Language B, Individuals and Societies, Experimental Sciences, Mathematics, and Arts and Electives. At least three but not more than four are taken at the Higher Level (HL) while the others are standard level (SL). HL courses represent a minimum of 240 teaching hours (2 years) and SL courses cover 150 hours minimum (1 year minimum).
Why are some courses taken at the higher level and other at the standard level?
This allows students to explore some subjects in depth and others more broadly, a deliberate compromise between the early specialization of some national systems and the breadth found in others. The science-oriented student is challenged to learn a foreign language and the natural linguist becomes familiar with laboratory procedures.
What are the benefits of earning an IB Diploma?
The Diploma Programme equips students with the skills and attitudes necessary for success in higher education and employment. The IB Organization’s goal is to provide students with the values and opportunities that will enable them to develop sound judgment, make wise choices, and respect others in the global community. Just like Advance Placement, each university sets its own criteria for awarding college credit and/or scholarships. The state of Texas has guaranteed that the student earning the IB Diploma will receive 24 college credit hours for any public college or university in Texas. Students and parents can view each university’s IB policy for awarding credit by viewing the IBO web page, www.ibo.org.
How is the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme SIMILAR to the Advanced Placement Program?
Both are excellent preparations for higher education. Both offer rigorous curricula. Success in either program is an excellent indicator for success in college. Both give students the opportunity to place out of college courses. Specially trained teachers teach both. Both require several hours of homework or off campus preparation each day.
How is the IB Diploma Programme DIFFERENT from the AP Program?
AP students can choose one or more AP exams/ courses to take. IB students must take one course

(which leads to an external exam) from each of the six IB subject groups. IB students must also write an extended essay of some 4,000 words, take a Theory of Knowledge course during the Spring semester of their Junior Year and the Fall semester of their Senior Year, and complete 150 hours of the Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) component during the 11th and 12th grade years. AP assesses students with exams in May. IB also assesses students with exams in May, but IB also requires that students be assessed internally through the form of written papers, one-on-one oral examinations, portfolios, dossiers, projects, etc.
Can a student who is in the IB Programme also take AP courses and examinations?
Yes, most do.
Can a student who is in the AP Program also take IB courses and examination?
No. Eisenhower High School will be offering a complete diploma programme only.
Does the International Baccalaureate Diploma replace the state of Texas or Aldine ISD graduation requirements?
No. IB courses are designed to fulfill the state of Texas and Aldine ISD graduation requirements. It is very important for IB students to work closely with their school counselors to ensure that all graduation requirements are met. The IB Coordinator on campus will work closely with the IB students to ensure that all IB Diploma internal and external requirements are met.
When do I see my counselor and when do I see the IB Coordinator?
Counselor: Questions about AISD and Texas graduation
requirements, scholarship information, ACT and SAT information, college questions, AP courses and exams, and summer school. IB Coordinator: Questions about IB courses, IB internal examinations, IB exams, IB CAS requirements, IB Extended Essay requirements, IB Diploma requirements, and scheduling IB classes.
Is it possible to pursue extracurricular activities as a junior?
Yes, in fact, many juniors enroll in at least one of the following: band, choir, orchestra, theatre, soccer, and baseball for examples. Is it guaranteed that you will be able to accommodate your extracurricular activity within your IB schedule? No. Some combinations just don’t work out. Choices will have to be made.
What is CAS and when do I start?
CAS stands for Creativity, Action, and Service. All IB students are required to perform least 50 creativity, 50 action, and 50 service hours during their 11th and 12th grade year. The IB CAS Supervisor will present each student with the CAS guidelines in spring of their sophomore year.
What is the extended essay, when do I start it, and when is it due?
All IB students are required to submit a research paper of some 4000 words. The IB Coordinator and the TOK teacher will introduce this to students during the Spring Semester of their Junior Year. The essays are due in December of the Senior Year.

Checklist
Before submitting this application, please make sure you have attached all the required documentation by checking the list below. The application must be complete and all requested paperwork attached. Incomplete applications will not be processed. Information submitted is not shared with other offices and will not be returned to the applicant.
o Completed application signed by parent(s) and student.
o Completed Parent Questionnaire signed by parent(s)
o One handwritten essay from one of the four writing prompts (see IB Writing Sample – Student Instructions page)
o Copy of the current year’s mid-year report card with semester grades listed and TAKS scores
o Deliver a Teacher Recommendation Form and the return envelope to an English teacher, a Math teacher and another teacher of your choice. These teachers should have had you in class within the last two years. Make sure the teachers are aware of the January 31st deadline and make arrangements to pick up the sealed recommendations from the teachers.
Place all items from this checklist, including the three Teacher Recommendation Forms in a large envelope. PRINT your name on the envelope’s label.
Deliver the completed packet in person to the Magnet Office, Resource Center, 14909 Aldine Westfield, Houston, TX 77032, to assure that the application packet is complete.
Incomplete applications will not be processed.
