THEY SAID WE COULDN'T DO IT! I AM SO PROUD OF OUR PARISHIONERS!

“Y . . . ”

Elissa Ely is a psychiatrist in Boston and a frequent contributor to The Boston Globe. In a recent column [July 15,

2021], Dr. Ely recounts the $me she was a student in Boston living in a walkup apartment in Cambridge. Her landlady

was a kind, quiet widow, whose back door was always open and a cup of tea readily offered to her tenants.

Things were not going well for Elissa socially or professionally. Life, she remembers, “felt bleak.” One a0ernoon,

she passed her landlady’s open door. Dr. Ely remembers:

“My landlady set out the cup and began to cha4er, as she liked to do. Then she must have sensed the mood,

because she stopped. Several simple words out of seeming nowhere followed. I will never forget them.

“You", she said, “are a hidden treasure, just waing to be found."

“That sentence has kept me company for 30 years. It visits in moments of loneliness, in doubts, a0er mistakes,

when friendships have sadly ended, and whenever there appears to be no clear light ahead. It was not that I believed

what she said. It was that she said it with such fervency. We lean on the faith of others when our own has

disappeared.”

Christ speaks in a kind widow’s reassurance to a young woman going through a difficult me: You are a

hidden treasure, just waing to be found. Jesus asks us to be his disciples by taking on the small

kindnesses that mirror the love of God; he calls us to be prophets by living everyday lives of integrity and

honesty that reflect the jusce and peace of God. O&en, it’s a ma'er of “cu)ng off” our selfabsorpon

that prevents us from helping another in distress or “plucking out” our own fears and doubts that blind us

to the struggles of others. Jesus promises us that even the simplest act of compassion or kindness like

that offered by Dr. Ely’s landlady 30 years ago will one day be honored by God in his Kingdom.

PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY

SEPTEMBER 26, 2021

Gracious and loving God, we thank you for the gi of our priests.

Through them, we experience your presence in the sacraments.

Help our priests to be strong in their vocaon. Set their souls on fire

with love for your people. Grant

them the wisdom, understanding,

and strength they need to follow in

the footsteps of Jesus. Inspire them

with the vision of your Kingdom.

Give them the words they need to spread the Gospel. Allow them to

experience joy in their ministry. Help them to become instruments

of your divine grace. We ask this through Jesus Christ, who lives and

reigns as our Eternal Priest. WE MOST ESPECIALLY THANK YOU,

GOD, FOR THE GIFT OF FR. MIKE. AMEN.

THE BEAUTY OF OUR FAITH SERIES

This week we look at the

A

 Every September 29 the

Catholic Church celebrates a feast

of three archangels: Michael,

Gabriel, and Raphael. The word

archangel appears once in the

Bible, in reference to Michael (Jude

9). Tradi'on has added the other

two names to the list because both play significant roles

with him in the bible.

Raphael appears in the Book of Tobit, where he is both

matchmaker and healer.

Gabriel is best known for

his appearances in the

New Testament. He

announces to Zechariah

the forthcoming birth of

John the Bap'st (Luke

1:13, 19), and most

famously he announces to

Mary that she will conceive

Jesus (Luke 1:2638).

 Michael appears in

the Book of Daniel as a defender of the chosen people (see

chapters 10 and 12). In Jude he disputes with the devil

over the body of Moses. And in Revela'on he and his

angels fight the dragon. Michael is the patron of police and

others who protect the welfare of people.

No church had ever been dedicated to Michael un'l

the sixth century, when the faithful erected one on the Via

Salaria in Rome. It was dedicated on September 29, which

became the Feast of St. Michael on the Roman calendar.

The other two archangels were added to this day a9er the

Second Va'can Council. The Collect for the Mass stresses

two func'ons of the archangels: They defend the Chris'an

people, and they minister to God in heaven.

A fourth archangel, Uriel, is acknowledged in Chris'an

tradi'on, though he does not appear in the Bible, and

hence has no place on the liturgical calendar. The

apocryphal gospels say he carried John the Bap'st and his

mother Elizabeth to join Jesus, Mary, and Joseph on the

flight into Egypt. Uriel is one of the characters in Leonardo

de Vinci’s masterpiece, Virgin of the Rocks.

help those in need! Baskets are at the doors of the parish center.

OCTOBERMONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY

The Rosary is a wellloved Catholic devo/on that combines vocal

and mental prayer. The Rosary

helps us to pray to Jesus through

Mary. There is power in the

Rosary. The most important

power it has is that it leads us into

a deeper union with Jesus and

Mary, engraving more deeply in our being the saving mysteries

of our faith, the source of our hope and the cause of our love.

Therefore, we will gather together as a faith community ½ hour

before each of our weekend Masses in October to pray this

beau/ful prayer. We ask that as you enter church for Mass,

please be a2en/ve to those in prayer. Please join us!

DEACON JOHN'S STEWARDSHIP COLUMN

T B H P

We need them in life’s early morning,

 we need them again at the close;

We feel their warm clasp of true friendship,

we need them when tasng life’s woes.

At the altar each day we behold them,

And the hands of a king on his throne

are not equal to them in their greatness;

 their dignity stands all alone;

And when we are tempted and wander

to pathways of shame and of sin,

It’s the hand of a priest will absolve us

 not once, but again and again;

And when we are taking life’s partner,

other hands may prepare us a feast,

But the hand that will bless and unite us

is the beauful hand of a priest.

God bless them and keep them all holy

 for the Host which their fingers caress;

When can a poor sinner do be%er than

to ask Him to guide thee and bless?

When at the hour of death comes upon us

may our courage and strength be increased

by seeing raised over us in blessing the

beauful hands of a priest! Anonymous

Thank you to Fr. Mike for answering the call to Priesthood.

We are all blessed because of you!

God bless you, Deacon John Bartos

SHARING OUR TREASURE

“Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you

belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his

reward.” Mark 9:41

We are made in God’s image and likeness. We tend to forget

this. When you look at others, do you see the face of Jesus in

them? When others look at you, do they see the face of Jesus

in you? When we realize that all lives ma2er to God, then

gra/tude and generously become easier. Why? Because that’s

the way we are made! We are one Body of Christ; when one of

us is hur/ng, all of us feel the pain.
