Service of Praise

Day of Hope and Day of Glory!

Day of hope and day of glory! After slavery and woe, comes the dawn of human freedom, and the light shall grow and grow, until every man and woman equal liberty shall know.In freedom marching on!

Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah!Glory, glory hallelujah!

In freedom marching on! Not for self, but larger service, has our cry for freedom grown;there is crime, disease, and warfare as we face the world alone. In the name of love we're rising now to serve and save our own. Together marching on!

Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah!Glory, glory hallelujah!

In freedom marching on! We will help to make a pruning hook of ev'ry out-grown sword. We will help to knit the nations in continuing accord. In humanity made perfect ev'ry freedom is restored, As peace comes marching on!

Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah!Glory, glory hallelujah!

In freedom marching on!

Service of ProclamationA reading from the drama of Job (1.1-2, 6-12)

Rev Dr Durrell Watkins There was a man named Job who lived in the country of Uz.

He was a good, honest man. He respected God and refused to do evil. Job had seven sons and three daughters. [And he was very wealthy]. One day the angels came to meet with the LORD. Even “the Accuser” (the satan) was there with them. The LORD said to the satan, “Where have you been?” The satan answered the LORD, “I have been roaming around the earth, going from place to place.” Then the LORD replied, “Have you noticed my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him. He is a good, faithful man. He…refuses to do evil.” The satan answered, “But Job has a good reason to respect you. You always protect him, his family, and everything he has. You have blessed him and made him successful in everything he does. He is very wealthy. But if you were to destroy everything he has, I promise you that he would curse you.” The LORD said to the satan, “All right, do whatever you want with anything that he has, but don’t hurt Job himself.” The satan then left the meeting

In these human words, God’s voice is heard. Thanks be to God.

Please rise as you are able.

ResponseMy LIfe Is In Thee

My life is in you, O omnipresent One.My life is in you, O omnipresent one.

Fountain of life you are, springing within each heart, No life from you apart, O goodness divine!

The story continues (Job 1.13-22) One day Job’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking

wine at the oldest brother’s house. A messenger came to Job and said, “We were plowing the fields when some Sabeans attacked us! They killed the other servants. I am the only one who escaped to come and tell you the news!” That messenger was still speaking when another one came in and said, “A bolt of lightning struck your sheep and servants and burned them up. I am the only one who escaped to come and tell you the news!” That messenger was still speaking when another one came in and said, “The Chaldeans sent out three raiding parties that attacked us and took the camels! They killed the other servants. I am the only one who escaped to come and tell you the news!” That messenger was still speaking when another one came in and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking together. A strong wind suddenly came in from across the desert and blew the house down. It fell on your sons and daughters, and they are all dead. I am the only one who escaped to come and tell you the news!” When Job heard this, he got up, tore his clothes, and shaved his head to show his sadness. Then he fell to the ground to bow down before God and said, “When I was born into this world, I was naked and had nothing. When I die and leave this world, I will be naked and have nothing. The LORD gives, and the LORD takes away. Praise the name of the LORD!” Job did not accuse God of doing anything wrong.

In these human words, God’s voice is heard. Thanks be to God.

PrayerRev Margarita Rodriguez

Dear God, we don’t always understand when pain strikes, but we dare to trust that hope will sustain us, that there remains something for which to be grateful, and that your goodness is not diminished by the appearances of a difficult season. Amen.

Please be seated.

Sign of Peace

I've Got the Music In Me

Ain't got no trouble in my life,No foolish dream to make me cry.I'm never frightened or worried,

I know I'll always get by.

I heat up, I cool downWhen something gets in my way I go round it.

Don't let life get me downGonna take life the way that I found it.

I got the music in me; I got the music in meI got the music in me; I got the music in meI got the music in me; I got the music in me

Feel funky, Feel good, Gonna tell yaI'm in the neighborhood

Gonna fly like a bird on the wingHold on to your hat honey

Sing, sing, sing, sing

Heat up, cool downI got words in my head so I say them

Don't let life get me downCatch a hold of my blues, just play them

I got the music in me; I got the music in meI got the music in me; I got the music in meI got the music in me; I got the music in me

Your faithful support means we can continue to support you and the larger community. Your gifts are appreciated and put to good use.

A new prayer is recorded each week. NEED PRAYER? – send your prayer request to [email protected] GIVING IN GRATITUDE – In July each year we ask people to celebrate their blessings with Text to Give. How it works is that every time you experience a great joy, a moment of well-being,

hear really good news, achieve a goal, etc., you celebrate by texting a donation to Sunshine Cathedral. This is above and beyond regular giving, and each donation can be small…$1, or $2, or $5. Just a token to say, “I am thankful that God in me is bringing me peace, joy, wisdom, and hope.” Not only can this result in each of us giving an extra three to ten dollars per week to the church (which is very helpful in the summer), but it builds our attitude of gratitude, which then continues to fill us with joy. Of course, now you can make your Giving in Gratitude donations via Venmo or CashApp as well. This month, when you experience an extra blessing, share the blessing with the church by sending a dollar or two in gratitude. May your blessings be many!

Saints of the WeekJuly 6: Jan Hus (1372-1415)—Czech reformer and martyr. Born to a poor peasant family, Hus wasordained a priest and eventually became rector of Prague University. Long before the Protestant Reformation, Hus wasan enormously popular and fiery preacher who spoke against corruption in the medieval church and translated the Bibleinto Czech. When he refused to stop preaching he was excommunicated, jailed, and burned at the stake. He met hisdeath with great courage and faith, forgiving his enemies. His spiritual descendants eventually became the Moravian church. July 7: St. Veronica (first century CE) – When Jesus fell carrying his cross bar to his execution, legend says a compassionate woman, Veronica, rushed to him to wipe his face with her veil. Tradition insists that Jesus’ face left an imprint on the veil. “Veronica” may come from the words “Vera” (true) and “Icon” (image). Whether or not the story is historically factual, it does proclaim the enduring truth of the power of kindness. Peace Pilgrim (1908 – 1981) - born Mildred Lisette Norman, was an American spiritual teacher, mystic, pacifist, vegetarian, and activist. She walked across the United States, speaking with others about peace. Between 1953 and 1964 she had walked over 25,000 for peace and stopped logging miles after that (even though she definitely continued walking). She wrote, “Our institutions and our leaders reflect our immaturity, but as we mature we will elect better leaders and set up better institutions. It always comes back to the thing so many of us wish to avoid: working to improve ourselves." Her pilgrimage (walking for peace) spanned almost three decades beginning in 1953 (during the Korean War). She continued walking for 28 years (which included the Vietnam War years). Her only possessions were the clothes on her person and a few items she carried in her pockets. She had no organizational backing, did not carry money, and didn’t even ask for food or lodging. She had taken a vow to "remain a wanderer until [humankind] has learned the way of peace, walking until given shelter and fasting until given food."On July 7, 1981, while being driven to a speaking engagement near Knox, Indiana, Peace Pilgrim was killed in an automobile accident. At the time of her death, she was crossing the United States for the seventh time. July 9: Augustus Tolton (1854-1897)—First African-American Catholic priest. Tolton was born to Catholic slave parents who escaped during the Civil War. From an early age he felt a call to the priesthood. He studied in Illinois, and later in Rome, before being returned to the US to be ordained and work with struggling Black Catholic congregations. Thoughfrequently marginalized by the establishment, he exposed racism in the church and worked for integration and equality.
