October 4, 2013 Dear Parents and/or Guardians, As we approach conferences next week, the Prairieview Staff wanted to thank you for taking the time to return the parent exchange forms sent home on August 23 rd . Communication between parents and teachers is a priority. The parent exchange form is one way to facilitate two-way communication between home and school. Your child’s teacher used the information you provided to help them prepare for your child’s year of learning and your parent teacher conference. Our hope for fall conferences is to begin the year by setting attainable goals for your child’s learning. The purpose of the first conference is to give parents and teachers time to set goals and develop strategies and approaches that meet the needs of each child’s unique learning style. Goal setting is important. When children are successful at setting and reaching goals, they not only feel good about themselves, but they become more invested in their own learning. The first conference provides time for parents and teachers to work together to help the child set specific, attainable goals. We hope the following tips are helpful to you as you prepare for your child's conference: Plan ahead. Ask your child if there is anything he/she would like you to bring up during the meeting. You may want to write down any questions you have on a piece of paper. Think of yourself as a partner with the teacher. You can work together to come up with ideas and goals to help your child achieve success in school. Please come at your scheduled time. If the teacher is engaged in a conference at your scheduled time, knock on the door to let the teacher know you are there. Finally, share the details of the conference with your child. Let him/her know that everyone has strengths and areas for growth. We value your thoughts regarding your child's learning. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call me or your child’s teacher.

Sinceramente Vince Murray Principal !

Dear Prairieview Families, We hope you have heard about the Prairieview PALS program from your child! We are excited to be earning PALS at school and wanted to share the following information with you!

Prairieview Citizens are… Respectful Trustworthy

Active Listeners We always do our personal best!

We are implementing a school‐wide Positive Behavior Interventions and

Supports System (PBIS). PBIS is designed to teach students pro‐social skills and to support behaviors consistent with a positive and safe learning environment. In order to ensure the success of PBIS, it is important that we reward students for displaying positive behaviors that reflect a dedication to learning and citizenship. We need your help! We are looking for donations of any kind to add to our prize bank! We need gift cards, small prizes, larger prizes, whole class rewards and so on! We are so excited about this program and we are proud of our students for the positive changes they are making in their behaviors at school and in our school community. When implemented properly, this program can have a tremendous impact on the entire learning community! If you would like to make a donation of any size, please send to the Prairieview School Office, with Attention: Prairieview School Universal PBIS Team. Thank you in advance for helping to mold the productive citizens in our community! Sincerely, The Prairieview School PBIS Team

Home Cool Tool:

Listening quietly to others Purpose of the lesson? Why it is important: 1. Listening to others shows respect to the person who is talking. 2. Listening helps us learn. 3. Active listening shows cooperate. Teaching Examples: The following presents situations that your child might find himself in. Use these examples to discuss with your child how to make good decisions when listening to others. Your child’s new soccer coach is talking about the rules of soccer. Your child has played before and thinks he/she knows all of the rules. Your child finds it boring and would rather think about something else. Talk about why listening to the coach is important (ex. as you get older the rules might change, different coaches might have different expectations, the coach might ask questions afterward). Talk about what consequences could occur from not listening. A family member is helping your child with math homework. The family member is explaining how to carry numbers when adding two columns. Your child was taught a different way to do it in school, and instead of listening to the family member your child interrupted and said, “that’s not the way we learned how to do it.” Ask your child if this was the appropriate way to respond. Discuss the fact that if your child needed help maybe listening to another way to do it would help him/her to learn. If your child says that it has to be done a specific way talk about how you can learn more then one way to do something and it might make it easier to understand one way when you know of another. You are driving your children (or your child and a friend) to the library. One of your children (or your child’s friend) is talking about something that happened at school. Your other child interrupts to talk about something that he/she thinks is much more important. Discuss the importance of listening to another and letting them finish before adding information or changing the subject of conversation. Ask your child if people should listen when he/she speaks. Ask how it feels when not listened to. Kid Activities/Role Plays: 1.Practice listening. Tell your child a story and have him/her paraphrase the story back to you. Let your child tell you a story and paraphrase it back to your child. 2.Discuss how a person can show another that they are listening to them (making eye contact, nodding, responding, etc.). 3.List ways in which listening helps us to learn, and to be safe. Follow-up/Reinforcement Activities: 1. Before telling your child something that is important let them know so by saying something to the effect of “ It is very important that you listen.”

1. Let your child know that you appreciate their good listening. *Lesson Courtesy of Longfellow School

Destination ImagiNation View the 2013-2014 Challenge Previews

Interested in running a team? Contact us to learn about being a D46 DI Team Manager!

Download a Registration Packet Our Program Foundation 46 is proud to sponsor Destination ImagiNation® (DI) as an extra-curricular activity offered to students throughout our school district. DI is designed to allow students to learn and experience creativity, teamwork, and problem solving. This global program offers a truly unique 21st Century learning experience that fosters a dynamic skill set required for future success and allows students to develop into “world-class innovators and critical thinkers”. Results of the American Management Association’s 2010 Critical Skills Survey revealed that 75% of business executives believe the 4 C’s will be as essential to their organizations as the 3 R’s. DI fosters the 4 C’s:

• Critical Thinking and Problem Solving • Communicating Effectively • Collaboration and Team Building • Creativity and innovation

DI teams focus on their chosen challenge throughout the season. DI offers challenges in the following domains:

• Technical • Scientific • Fine Arts • Improvisational • Structural • Service

Most D46 DI teams will meet once a week for approximately one hour from late October until early March. It is not uncommon for teams to meet as many as three times a week during the month of February in preparation for the Regional Tournament. Competitive level teams (grades 3-8) that qualify for the State and Global Tournaments may continue through Memorial Day weekend. Registration fees are collected to cover all costs through the State Tournament. Families are expected to transport their children to tournaments. Any necessary transportation and/or lodging costs for these tournaments are not covered by the Foundation. The Regional Tournament is held in the north suburbs and is typically not too far from home. Families who qualify for free or reduced lunch may submit this form to have DI registration fees waived or reduced by 50%. Costs are as follows: Early Learners (K-2): $34/student* Competition (3-8): $55/student* *Global Tournament: The 2013 cost for teams to attend the Global Tournament was $685 per child and Team Manager. Parents who wished to accompany their children and stay on site with them also paid $685 for the four-day tournament experience. While these costs are not covered by Foundation 46 or CCSD 46, the Foundation’s DI Committee does support and encourage fundraising efforts. Funds that are raised through these efforts can be used to cover the costs for students and Team Managers only. Teams who qualify for the Global Tournament are not under any obligation to attend. In the event that some families wish to attend while others do not, the team can be represented at the Tournament by as few as two team members and one Team Manager. To learn more about the Destination ImagiNation® program, please visit their website at www.destinationimagination.org. The “Why Destination ImagiNation®” White Paper offers an excellent overview of the program and its necessity.

Great Job at 2013 Globals, DI Tornadoes! Thank you to the following businesses and organizations for supporting the DI Tornadoes trip to the Global Tournament:

Enrich · Enhance · Every Child

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Foundation46 has wrapped up an amazing 2012-2013 fiscal year, and we now have a renewed understanding of just how important our success can be to the students of D46 as we begin to partner with the new D46 grant writer.

Last year, Foundation46 brought in $42,698 in revenue! Over $8,500 in revenue came from corporate and business contributions. We hope to increase the percent of our revenue that streams from corporations, and we are confident that we can accomplish this with such a successful year behind us. Corporations will be much more likely to contribute dollars to an organization that has demonstrated a pattern of successful fundraising and fiscal responsibility. The stage has now been set to start bringing in more of that revenue.

We are so excited to have the opportunity to partner with the new D46 grant writer to bring in grant dollars for which only a 501(c)3 can apply! While public schools are not-for-profit organizations, they do not fall under the 501(c)3 section of the tax code and therefore do not qualify for many financial grants. Yet corporations receive the greatest tax incentives possible by making their contributions to 501(c)3 organizations. This makes Foundation46 an ideal vehicle for applying for corporate grants to support our local schools. This also means that Foundation46’s success can offer a major turning point for our local schools.

The support the community has offered as we have rebuilt the organization in the last two years has been more important than most people understand. Thank you so much for putting your faith in us—we won’t disappoint you! Please move ahead with us into another great year! Contact us at [email protected] to learn how you can get involved.

Here’s to another great year!

2013 HOME RUN FOR EDUCATION

Foundation46 hosted its 2nd Annual Home Run for Education Softball Tournament on Saturday, September 14, at Central Park and Aquatic Fields in Grayslake, generating $6,500 in proceeds. Ten teams of 10-15 players came together for this exciting and spirited all-day event in the beautiful late summer sunshine.

The double elimination tournament resulted in a significant upset! Lord of Glory, a team formed within the Lord of Glory Lutheran Church community, arose from the losers’ bracket to seize the championship over the Durham Bulls who had survived all day in the winners’ bracket. Although the Lord of Glory team had played seven games throughout the day, they looked just as strong in their final match-up as they had in their first game of the day.

The Grayslake Police put the Fire Department to the test with a decisive victory in their midday matchup, officiated by Mayor Rhett Taylor. We expect the Fire Department will be looking for retribution next year!

The tournament was capped by a short awards celebration at The Vine’s annual outdoor Blues Festival where the champions graciously declined the $700 cash prize, stating they knew Foundation46 would put the funds to good use.

The Memory Makers, a team sponsored and primarily fielded by Memory Makers Entertainment staff, was awarded a prize for having raised the highest dollar amount in pledges, a whopping $850! The prize was a $100 gift card to The Vine intended for a team celebration. When the Memory Makers team learned of Lord of Glory’s decision to decline 100% of their cash prize, they decided to pay it forward as well. They used their gift card to pick up the tab for the Lord of Glory team instead!

The Foundation46 Board of Directors is incredibly proud to be a part of such a kind spirited community. We look forward to another great tournament next September! Follow us on facebook and watch our website to keep up with our plans for next year’s tournament as well as other exciting events and announcements.

A very special thank you to our sponsors and every member of our community who contributed to this event by playing on a team or volunteering for the day!

FUN FLUENCY GRANTS AWARDED

Foundation46 is pleased to announce that we have awarded grants to seven students to participate in the Fun Fluency Spanish immersion program. This program takes place after school at Prairieview, Woodview, and Frederick Schools. The Fun Fluency program teaches students the Spanish language through the Total Physical Response and Storytelling method (TPRS). Under this approach to language learning, language is taught and learned in an immersive experience using movement, storytelling, games, projects, and rhythms. Foundation46 will cover up to 75% of the cost of the program for each of the seven students.

Foundation46 will also be accepting applications for Science Olympiad and Scholastic Bowl again this year! Last winter, we were able to provide eight merit scholarships to students who submitted wonderful essays expressing their love for science and eagerness to work with other students but who also had the ambition to help their parents with program costs.

Applications for Science Olympiad will be accepted beginning in late fall. Scholastic Bowl applications will be accepted beginning early winter. This year’s grants will be awarded to students who have a love of learning but may be experiencing a financial hardship that would otherwise prevent them from participating.

It is Foundation46’s goal to ensure that no deserving, promising student who desires to participate in these activities will be kept away because of program fees.

DESTINATION IMAGINATION

Foundation46 is proud to sponsor Destination ImagiNation® (DI) as an extra-curricular activity offered to students throughout our school district. DI is designed to allow students to learn unique and critical life skills including teamwork, creative thinking, project management, how to innovate, resource management, mutual respect, research and presentation skills. DI teaches the creative process by allowing teams to solve challenges together as a team. Teams have to imagine, create and develop solutions on their own. This global program offers a truly unique 21st century learning experience that fosters a dynamic skill set required for future success and allows students to develop into “world-class innovators and critical thinkers.”

DI teams focus on their chosen challenge throughout the season. DI offers challenges in the following domains:

Technical Scientific Fine Arts

Improvisational Structural
