Report: Introduction to nursery

Instructor: Mr. Wafi and Mr. Sudirman.

On 8 January 2011, forteen of Diploma of Agriculture students went to SD Seeds and Agricultural Services nursery for our first HRT 2001 practical. Mr. Wafi, production exercutive and Mr. Sudirman helped us there to learn about nursery.

The capasity of the nursery is 200,000 seedlings for first stage and 30,000 seedlings for second stage. Basically, the nursery was manage by eight workers. In addition, the nursery used Calix 600 as main planting material.

Ultimately,We have learn several things about nursery during practical as following:

1) Objective of nursery is to produce the best planting materials possible for field planting.

2) Type of the planting materials: Calix 600 GH 500 HRU

3) The characteristics of the good nursery site: Site must be well drained to avoid flood or water logging. Site should have easy access. Side near to clean water source. Located in secure area.

4) Type of nursery: Single Stage Nursery:

In the single stage nursery,the size 15cmX20cm of poly bags used to cultivate the seeds. The poly bags was placed at 3feet triangular spacing. Usually,the seedling will be space out once the leave begin to overlap.

Double Stage Nursery:Initially,special tray to germinate the oil palm was used in SD Seeds and Agricultural Services nursery for double stage nursery. Nowday,still many of nursery do not use the tray in double stage nursery (Many of other nursery still using small poly bag ). As the workers of the nursery tell to us,there must be one round culling before transplanting into large poly bags. Transplanting must be done when the leave of the seedling about 5-7 leaf stage and began to overlap.
