Jonny Persey, Director, MetFilmJonny is passionate about creating and maintaining a valuable and industry-relevant educational system, spearheading the synergy between the group’s separate facets to offer students the best learning experience possible. He gets a buzz from watching our graduates win work, runs projects, and apply their trade in film, television, online, and across the creative industries in the UK and beyond.

David Howell,CEO, MetFilmDavid has 18-years’ experience inHigher Education Management,most recently as Registrar andCommercial Director at TheInstitute of Contemporary MusicPerformance. As Registrar,providing overall strategicleadership for Quality, Dataand Planning for the Institute.As a Director of the company,he has also played a key partin the development of overallgovernance capability, bothacademic and corporate.

Silvia Beck, Principal, BerlinSilvia Beck has a career that spans over 25 years working as a director, editor and cinematographer. Whilst studying Cinematography at the National Film and Television School in the UK, Silvia shot two BAFTA-nominated short films; Going Down and Bait. Throughout her career, Silvia has worked on productions across Europe including I Am from Nowhere, The Trouble with Men and Women, Big Girls Don’t Cry, and Nyman in Progress. She has headed up MetFilm School Berlin since its inception in 2012.

Maja Classen,Short Course Coordinator

Marvin holds a degree in Film and Television with a focus on camera. At MetFilm School Berlin he is responsible for all technical equipment and studio facilities. He co-ordinates student’s access to cameras, lenses, sound and lighting and guarantees that they always are in good condition.

Maja started her carrier in filmmaking in San Francisco. She is now based in Berlin and has a Diploma in Directing from the highly acclaimed Film University Babelsberg. She has many years of experience as a documentary filmmaker and writer focusing on subcultures and social issues.

Ekaterina Dolgina, Undergraduate Coordinator10 years of video production experience in both Russia and Germany have provided Ekaterina with in-depth knowledge and a wide range of perspectives and approaches in the field of media production. She has previously advised and guided students at the Russian State University on their path into the world of journalism. At MetFilm School Berlin she is the first point of contact for all Undergraduate students, supporting and encouraging them on their journey from day one to graduation.

Barbara Pilling, Postgraduate CoordinatorOver many years Barbara has worked as unit manager and location manager for German and international film productions. With her production related experiences in filming in Berlin and Brandenburg she helps students to produce their film exercises and graduation films at the School.

MA Documentary course leader at MetFilm School Berlin. An active member of CILECT who has taught across Europe, with a broad range of credits, from political documentaries, music clips and commissioned films, to reality and corporate projects.

Composer for film and television from the UK, Alasdair won the VW Score Prize at the Berlin Film Festival 2006. Credits include the BAFTA-winning documentary Mummifying Alan and the major BBC Television series WW2 – Behind Closed Doors.

Award-winning French filmmaker based in Berlin with Master’s degrees from UCLA and the Institute of Political Sciences in Paris. Nora’s films and new media projects have been screened at film festivals worldwide, including the Berlinale, Hot Docs, and Sheffield Doc/Fest.

Production Sound Mixer with over 20 years’ experience on award-winning films The Look – Charlotte Rampling, Work Hard Play Hard, Die Spielwütigen, Patong Girl and popular German TV programs like Das Traumschiff and Polizeiruf 110.

MA Directing course leader at MetFilm School Berlin. His film Sto spiti won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the Berlinale in 2014 and his feature Echolot premiered at the Berlinale 2013. In 2016 he was a guest juror at the Oberhausen Film Festival.

Acclaimed filmmaker whose films have screened at festivals including SXSW, Los Angeles, BFI London, Locarno and many others. He’s a former Fulbright and DAAD Artist Scholar with an MFA in Directing from UCLA Film School.

MetFilm School tutors are creative professionals who work across a variety of relevant industries and formats, from TV commercials to major Hollywood productions.

American-born writer-director based in Berlin. His feature documentaries include Heaven on Earth (FIPA dOr), Homemade Hillbilly Jam (Hot Docs, True/False, Sheffield Doc/Fest) and Forgetting Dad (Special Jury Award, IDFA).

Previous experience as a producer and co-director on documentaries for TV and cinema. Now working as a freelancer on corporate films, documentaries and music videos. Julia has received development grants from the Berlin Senate and the EU.

MA Cinematography course leader at MetFilm School Berlin. Ralph is Director of Photography with over 20 years experience working on more than 70 feature films, TV series, documentaries and various art installations worldwide. His feature film Silent Waters won the Golden Leopard (Best Film) at 56th Locarno International Film Festival.

BA Practical Filmmaking Leader at MetFilm School Berlin. Henner is a critically acclaimed writer and director based in Berlin. His films Klassenfahrt (2001) and Lucy (2006) were shown at numerous festivals (Berlinale, London Film Festival and Karlovy Vary) and have won international awards.

A Ph.D. in Film and Visual Studies from Harvard University. Her feature film Rosehill has been shown at various US film festivals. She has taught Film at Harvard University, New York University Berlin, Indiana University and other institutions.

Director and Editor of commercials, pop-promos and drama working out of London and Berlin. Prizes include the Diamond Award at the California Film Awards and Best Music Video at Lots Angeles Film Festival in Hollywood.

What will you study?On the 2 Year BA (Hons) programme there are six blocks that focus on the six main screen productions you will complete on the course: Fiction, Short Form, Factual, Episodic, Long Form and the final Graduation Project. During each block, you will explore core subject areas through practical exercises that will build a comprehensive, practical and in-depth understanding of the key skills needed to produce dynamic screen content.

Core ModulesIdeas & StoryLearn how to develop creative story ideas across a range of formats, including short form, documentaries, factual television, web series and fiction film. You will gain the tools to identify your target audience and adapt your ideas to the appropriate screen platform.

Character & PerformanceExplore the various techniques for shaping character and performance across a variety of platforms, including fiction, documentary and episodic television. Working with professional actors, you will learn how to transpose an idea from the page to the screen through key visual storytelling approaches.

Image & SoundLearn how to use camera, lighting, and sound techniques to create visually and sonically compelling stories for fiction, documentary and episodic productions. You will develop strong technical skills and explore the impact of image and sound on original screen content.

Post ProductionDiscover creative and technical skills across the full range of post production workflows, including offline editing, sound design, and colour grading. You will learn how post production skills are central to the storytelling process across film, television and new media.

Screen BusinessYou will explore how to manage productions, create successful project pitches and work collaboratively within creative teams. Learn how creative industries work and how you can become a smart screen creative that will be attractive to industry employers.

Practical Filmmaking Diploma (DipHE) The Practical Filmmaking Diploma is an intensive course for those who already have a degree or work experience in a non-film related discipline, but who want to transition into the screen industries with a qualification. During the Diploma there are four blocks of work – Fiction, Short Form, Factual, Episodic – that contain five modules: Ideas and Story, Character and Performance, Image and Sound, Post Production and Screen Business. During each block you will explore core subjects from idea development through to editing, by doing practical exercises that will provide a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the key skills needed to produce dynamic screen content.

• Fourteen-month intensive practical course.

• Ideal for students looking to upskill their practical and technical knowledge of the screen arts and transfer into the screen industries from another profession.

• Develop a portfolio which includes short form, factual and episodic content.

• DipHE provides the option to continue onto the BA (Hons) course to build more in-depth practical knowledge.

Practical Filmmaking Certificate (CertHE) This Practical Filmmaking Certificate is designed for students interested in exploring a career in film, television or online media before committing to a longer course. In just eight months you will build a strong understanding of the screen industries.You will learn about Visual Storytelling and Short Form content production and will study core subject areas of Ideas and Story, Character and Performance, Image and Sound, Post Production and Screen Business. Through practical exercises you will learn everything from idea development to editing, which will provide you with a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the key skills needed to produce dynamic screen content.

• Eight-month intensive practical filmmaking course.

• Ideal for students looking to jump-start their careers in the screen industries.

• Produce your first short form content that demonstrates your storytelling skills.

• CertHE provides the option to continue onto the DipHE or BA (Hons) courses.

Undergraduate Entry RequirementsWe accept applications and offer places on a rolling basis throughout the year. Our BA programmes are competitive and we encourage you to apply as far ahead of your intended start date as possible.International students must not apply later than three months before the start of the course to allow enough time for the international student visa application. It is highly advisable to apply earlier than that to avoid disappointment.

Standard Entry Requirements• All applicants need to be 18 years or older at the time the

programme begins.

• You must have 64 UCAS points or equivalent – MetFilm School Berlin will calculate the equivalent for international qualifications upon application.

• If you have not yet taken your qualifications, then you can still apply. Conditional offers will be made if this is the case.

Please note all Undergraduate programmes are taught in English and no German language skills are required.

Undergraduate programmes are validated by the University of West London in the UK and delivered by the MetFilm School Berlin. Graduates will receive a UK Higher Education degree.

The BA is available to students from all nationalities and qualifies for a German study visa.

Postgraduate Courses MA Cinematography – 1 Year, Full-TimeThis course prepares you for a career as a Cinematographer, Director of Photography (DOP), camera person across all screen industries. Cinematography is about understanding how to use camera and lighting techniques to tell a story, whether screened at the cinema, on TV, or through a smartphone.

Our Cinematography MA instils an understanding of the essential links between story and image and the relationship between cinematographers, directors and crews.

Phase OneScreen Induction LabThis module explores the lifecycle of screen content from conception to delivery through seminars and practical workshops and includes the Say Something film exercise.

Cinematography Boot CampAn immersive module that covers the core craft skills of cinematography, including the work of the camera department, fundamentals of camera movement and lighting.

Phase TwoAdvanced Camera & LightingPractical insight and reflection on the mechanics of lighting and camera movement across a range of shooting scenarios.

Commercial CinematographyWorking with students from other MA pathways, the cinematography students act as DOPs on some short-form films and videos for external clients.

The Visual Language of CinemaA module designed to develop the director’s craft through the core methodologies and techniques of visual storytelling, including dramatic tension, visual poetry and aesthetic principles.

MA Documentary & Factual – 1 Year, Full-TimeToday’s audiences can watch documentaries and factual programming at cinemas and art galleries, on television and smart phones, or via YouTube and Vimeo. Technological innovation and the digital revolution have changed the way we think and talk about factual content. We will teach you how to film reality from a variety of perspectives, understanding and sometimes challenging traditional interpretations of the documentary and its delivery.

The course will equip you with the necessary skills, conceptual approach, and mindset for a career in the creative media industries.

Phase OneScreen LabYou will participate in seminars and workshops covering a range of topics, including practical filmmaking skills, creative brainstorming, a survey of concepts underpinning moving image theory, and the state of the creative industries.

Documentary & Factual Boot CampThis module which covers the conceptual and historical developments associated with traditional and contemporary modes of practice, while also teaching key creative and technical skills required by today’s media platforms.

Phase TwoAuthorship & Point of ViewThis module looks at the various conventions and methods for developing and making compelling content. Explore the theory of authorship and alternative paradigms, analyse and engage in how ‘point of view’ impacts the structure, form and genre of non-fiction storytelling.

Production PracticesLearn and apply the core skills and principles that anchor contemporary documentary and factual production, including the importance of proposals and pitching skills, budgeting and scheduling.

The Business of Documentary & FactualThis module turns towards the business of getting documentary and factual programmes to the audience – in cinemas, on air or via the Internet. You will analyse the various financing and commissioning structures and look at emerging distribution avenues.

Research in Screen Practice Delivered alongside other modules, students explore key research methods and concepts.

Phase ThreeMaster’s ProjectThe Master's Project is a mostly self-directed module during which students will work under the guidance of a faculty advisor towards the development of a final filmed project as a director.

Postgraduate Entry Requirements All applicants must be 18 years or older at the time the programme begins.Applicants require a 2:1 honours degree from a UK university or equivalent. MetFilm School Berlin will calculate the equivalent for international qualifications upon application.

Language RequirementsIf English is not your first language, or if your previous education was not conducted fully in English, you will need to provide documented evidence of your English language competence to study a course with us. For our Master's courses, international students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS Academic at 6.5 or above (including at least 6.5 in writing and 5.5 in each other section), TOEFL internet based test score at 90 or above.

Students Not Meeting Academic RequirementsApplicants without a 2.1 degree, but possessing relevant work experience, can still apply and need to submit the following:• A compulsory academic essay (750-1000 words)• A professional industry reference• A professional CVCandidates with no degree and no filmmaking experience do not currently meet entry criteria.

Turn your passion into practice.Whether you want to study for a weekend of three months, short courses allow you to dig deeper into the exciting world of filmmaking. We offer courses in various disciplines, from documentary to fictional, cinematography to editing, sound and experimental.

Courses can be booked as standalone or combined for a unique learning experience.

All short courses are open to all with no formal entry requirements, however, to apply for Acting for Film Level 2 and Part-Time Acting for Level 2, you may need to supply a CV and showreel to demonstrate your acting experience.

Eight Week Documentary Filmmaking Full-TimeEight Week Documentary Filmmaking is an intensive programme which teaches the skills required to become a confident self-shooter and self-editor. Taught by an industry-experienced documentary filmmaker, the programme provides essential training in the use of professional cameras and industry-standard editing software.You will look at the history of documentary and will review examples of successful documentaries to better understand the marketplace today. Students will research, write, produce and edit their own short film under the guidance of an industry-professional tutor.

Four-Week Acting for Film – Level 1 Full-TimeFour-Week Acting for Film Level 1 is a full-time course taught over a four-week period. It is aimed at beginners without any or with limited previous film acting experience. The course consists of practical sessions exercising basic film acting principles. It will introduce students to more specific technical skills while aiming to maintain a sense of creative freedom.

MetFilm School Berlin is based at BUFA, the studio that has been home to film productions since the Weimar Republic and is one of the oldest film studios in Europe. The School's location enables students to have the first-hand experience of a working film studio on a day-to-day basis, and also places them in the heart of the city.

MetFilm School Berlin works in partnership with YouTubeSpace Berlin to provide our students with access to further equipment and shooting spaces.

Our Kit Room team offers a range of free camera, lighting and sound equipment to support student course projects. Students are encouraged to and have the opportunity to borrow equipment to use outside official school hours for training purposes or personal projects (subject to availability).

Berlin is a sprawling, diverse European capital and home to 3.5 million people from around the world. It offers a high quality of life whilst remaining affordable. With great public transport and extensive cycle lanes, it is easy to get from A to B all year-round. The Underground (U-bahn), the overground Schnellbahn (S-bahn) and Ringbahn provide fantastic access to most parts of Berlin and run through the night on weekends.

Once you start exploring, you will find an inspiring, liberal and open minded city with many different faces: an impressive range of lakes and city parks, vibrant nightlife, world class museums and contemporary art galleries, flea and food markets, festivals and sport events, alternative art venues and an eclectic mix of international restaurants.

Berlin Film Culture

It’s no surprise, that the German capital has long been a favourite location for international filmmakers and cinephiles. If you are looking to live and breathe film all day every day and connect with people who share your passion, then it’s hard to find a better city to live and study. Berlin is host to more than 50 film festivals per year: there should be something for everyone, including punk, African films, fashion cinema, and LGBT flicks and of course the world’s biggest public film festival ‘Berlinale’.

The city is scattered with countless cinemas - multiplex, arthouse and open-air - showcasing everything the wonderful world of film has to offer. Walking around Berlin it can feel at times that there are cameras rolling on every corner. Film students, influencers, Hollywood, Bollywood and the European filmmaking elite – they all appreciate the amazing locations and conditions Berlin has to offer for established and aspiring filmmakers and content creators from all around the world.

Visa Requirements Short Courses – Up to 3 MonthsA. Courses are available to EEA and Swiss

nationals who do not need a visa to enter Germany. EEA nationals are those that hold a passport from an EU country, including those from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

B. Nationals of certain countries may also enroll on three month short courses. However, they may not stay on German territory for more than 90 days in any six-month period, nor may they take up gainful employment while there.

C. Students from ALL other countries must apply for a tourist/Schengen visa in order to enter Germany. Passport holders from the countries on this list http://www.germany-visa.org/do-i-need-a-visa/ require a visa for short stays.

BA and MA Degree CoursesA. Available to EEA and Swiss nationals who do not

need a visa to enter Germany. EEA nationals are those that hold a passport from an EU country, including those from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

The MetFilm School Smart Screen Creative Awards are an annual awards ceremony celebrating the ingenuity, passion and talent of our graduates and students. Broadcaster and Journalist, Brenda Emmanus hosted our 2019 event, sponsored by Procam and Take 2, which welcomed over 200 guests.
