MIGHT YOU CONSIDER A LITTLE EXTRA YEAR END GIFT? As we near year’s end, we hope you are able to fulfill your 2017 pledge to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and its ministry. For those who can, please consider extending beyond your commit-ments with an end of year gift, to assist in satisfying the church’s budgetary needs. Also, in reviewing your gifting options, it is a good opportunity to consider strategies that can be more valuable than cash dona-tions, allowing you to maximize gifts to Prince of Peace. Two options that may be available to you are… Gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds and mutual funds. These

appreciated assets make excellent gifts to fulfill your support this year. Simply gift shares of stock or mutual funds directly from your brokerage account to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. This works best for commodities that have increased in value during your ownership, as there will be no income or capital gains taxes paid, and you will receive a charitable de-duction for the gift.

Gifts from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA). If you are over age 70½, you may do a direct rollover from your IRA directly to the church. You have the satisfaction of seeing your gift immediately support the church. Because you are making a direct rollover gift, there is no income to you, there-fore no income taxes to be paid and no effect on your Social Security taxation. You can gift any amount up to $100,000 from your IRA, and the gift counts towards your minimum re-quired IRA distribution. This opportunity is available to those who are at least 70½, and is especially beneficial to those who take the standard deduction on their income taxes each year.

“HEALER OF OUR EVERY ILL”

Marty Haugen is an American composer whose music is among

some of our favorite hymns. One of his songs, “Healer of Our Every

Ill,” will be the theme for our Advent midweek services, which begin

November 29 at 6:15.

Pastor Jennifer and I will be leading us through those 6:15pm eve-

ning services on Nov. 29, Dec. 6, 13 and 20th, meditating on the

healing our Lord brings into our lives each day. We will conclude with

a healing liturgy on Dec. 20th that will include the laying on of hands

and anointing for those who choose to come forward.

Healing liturgies have been a major part of the Church’s ministry from its beginning. We’ve offered healing

services many times at Prince of Peace. Sometimes when we think of healing, we automatically think of be-

ing cured from a disease, and if a cure doesn’t occur, then somehow the healing has been unsuccessful.

Some healings certainly result in physical or mental cures. However, not all do, so we need to think more

broadly about this. The Lord brings physical healings, but the Lord’s healing is fuller and richer than that.

The Lord brings healings to our mind, body, strength and spirit.

During these times of political, personal and spiritual anxiety, let us come before the Lord trusting in His

grace and love to heal our every ill. In fact, why don’t you make this a part of your preparations for Christ-

mas? Join us in the Fellowship Hall, beginning at 5:15 for a Soup Supper, and then to worship at 6:15, and

participate in Ray McKeever’s “Joyous Light” liturgy. This is a wonderful meditative service to invite your

friends, family and neighbors too. If you are new to Prince of Peace, plan on joining us for this service as we

prepare for the coming of our Lord!

We will be working with 3 projects: Westhaven Home for Handicapped Children and Youth,

(Jamaica's version of a Habitat home).

This year, we hope Prince of Peace members and families might consider including these projects in your holiday gifting!

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church is seeking a Part-Time

Canticle Choral Director who will be responsible for providing

leadership in the area of choral music. This position will work

closely with our pastors and coordinator of music ministry to

provide leadership in the area of choral music. The Choir Direc-

tor should be committed to the development of an adult praise

and worship choir that is able to sing songs from a wide variety

of musical styles. This is a “non-exempt” part-time position

(8 hrs/wk, Aug- May) with weekly rehearsals, leading worship 2

Sundays/month, and involvement in special services. Salary is

competitive with comparable positions in the area.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s Degree in Music is preferred

· Interest in teaching a variety of different musical styles

· Ability to listen and communicate with people of varying

musical backgrounds

· Teach vocal techniques at all levels

· Possess effective interpersonal communication skills

Principle Accountabilities:

· To promote the spiritual life of the congregation and its

members through music ministry.

· Regularly recruit new members and instill a sense of

community in the Canticle Choir.

· Directing the Canticle Choir and accompanist in rehearsals and

worship services.

· To plan for worship with our pastors and Coordinator of Music

Ministries, regarding the theme of Sunday worship services,

special programs, hymn selections and choral music.

· Work with the Worship Support Ministry, staff and others in

carrying out the music ministry of the congregation.

· Ensure that needed instruments and sound equipment are

available in consultation with the Coordinator of Worship

We’ve all heard the terms “mental illness” and “mental health” right? But what do those terms mean? This

week we will learn a little more about them and get an overview of seven common mental health conditions,

how frequently and why they may occur, as well as how they are treated and what recovery looks like.

Social Media and Bullying

February 7, 2018 - Breaking Stigma through Telling Your Story

As parents, how do we protect our kids from being bullied, especially on social media? This month we will learn

about stigma and the negative impact it has, as well as the importance of advocacy. We will also talk about so-

cial media and bullying. Finally, we will hear an inspiring story of a youth’s journey living well in recovery with a

mental health challenge.

Warning Signs of Suicide and Prevention

March 7, 2018 - Crisis Management and Suicide Prevention Strategies

How do I know if my child is thinking about suicide? This month we will learn about the warning signs of suicide,

what to do if you think someone you know is contemplating suicide and where to go for help. We will also learn

some techniques to support someone in crisis and manage and de-escalate a crisis situation.

Connecting with Resources

April 4, 2018 - Navigating Through the Mental Health Services

Where do I go from here? As a parent, one of the scariest things is not knowing where to go to get help for your

child! In our final session, we will learn about community resources for mental health services and how to ac-

cess those resources. We will hear from a parent who has been there, and will share their struggles and tri-

umphs with their child’s mental health journey.

We are wrapping things up for the Gifts of Hope outreach for the Appleton East High School students. The Witness Ministry is hosting a sub lunch and Christmas Caroling on Sunday, December 3rd from 11:30 – 2:00p.m. We’ll board a Lamers bus as our winter sleigh, to merrily go forth to visit homebound/medically bound members and area assisted living facilities. Before heading out, we’ll enjoy a quick sub lunch from 11:30 – Noon in the narthex area, then be off on our Christmas Caroling - way.

This is a family-friendly outing for members, friends and neighbors - invite a singing buddy (no experience necessary/song sheets provided). Please sign up on the Witness Ministry board if you are interested. For more information, contact Kris Gurholt (Witness Ministry Leader) or Cindy Romnek.

DO YOU LIKE TO SEW? Is your sewing machine gathering dust in a closet? Would you like to have fun with a great bunch of people from PoP? Come join the PoP-a-Stitch group. We meet the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Over

the next few weeks, we’ll be working on making fleece hats, scarves and mittens (see next paragraph). Then we’ll begin working on quilts for the “Carl Wolff Center,” a hospital in Romania. You do not have to sew to join us. We also

LET’S FILL UP THE MITTEN TREE - PoP-a-Stitch has set up a “mitten tree.” Please bring in hats, mittens or

scarves to ‘decorate’ the trees (hand-made or store bought). We will then donate the items to local charities in early December.

LUTHER PALOOZA FUN!

On November 5, Prince of Peace celebrated the 500th anniversary of the Reformation with Luther Palooza! There was

popcorn and root beer as well as prizes given out for quizzes and costumes. More than 60 attendees viewed Martin

Luther: The Idea that Changed the World. Beforehand, there was an opportunity for those who were interested to try

the ukulele. We learned some simple chords and the song Jesus Loves Me. At intermission, we sang Luther, Luther

accompanied by some of our PoP ukulele players. It was a fun afternoon of fellowship, indeed! We would like to thank

the following youth for their assistance with serving snacks and helping as needed through the afternoon: Kiran Lison,

Kylie Mayer, Ella Piette, Mariel Strasser, Morgan Wingender, Olivia Wingender, and Anna Wingender. We would also

like to thank Nathan Jansen and Logan Kaltenbrun for operating the AV booth.

UKES AT CHRISTMAS

The PoP ukuleles will be out in the Fellow-

ship Hall during the Advent soup suppers

during the month of December. This is a

great opportunity to learn some basic

chords and play Christmas songs. Get in

the Christmas spirit this holiday season with this new

musical opportunity at Prince of Peace!

MEET OUR NEWEST HOME COMMUNION COMPANIONS:

We are pleased to announce that Prince of Peace has added several 9th grade Confirmation Youth to the Home Com-

munion team!! These youth will be taking part in bringing the Lord’s Supper to some of our members of Prince of Peace

who are unable to make it to service.

On November, 12th, they received training from Pastor Roger

on the parts of the Home Communion kit, how to administer

Communion, and how to go about refilling their kits and have

them blessed. We are so grateful to these youth, and their

parents, for volunteering their time to go visit our Shut-in

Members. This is a new and wonderful opportunity for both

the youth and our shut-ins to build new friendships across

generations, as well as to connect on a spiritual level, in the

administering of the sacrament of Holy Communion. The

youth who will be taking part in this are:

Peter Lison, Kelsie Malliet, Brady Neuman, Isaac Resch,

Grace Robertson, and Olivia Wingender.

On November 1st, our Confirmation classes all worked diligently, making some amazing Martin Luther related projects.

Our 6th grade class created some super-cool Reformation Timelines, our 7th grade class put together some great trivia

questions, our 8th graders made a fantastic door, with ALL NINETY-FIVE Theses, handwritten and “nailed” to the door.

While our 9th grade class didn’t have a physical project to put together, they were given the “project” of performing

“Martin Luther and the Reformation” related skits on November 8th. All of the classes rose to the occasion and did a

fabulous job on their projects. They demonstrated great creativity and reminded Prince of Peace how each and every

student is so amazing and special!!! Thank you to all of you for your hard-work and effort!! It is truly a great thing, in-

deed!

POINSETTIA PLANTS FOR CHRISTMAS

Beautiful poinsettia plants can be ordered to decorate our chancel for the Christmas services.

Two sizes are available (Single or Double plants). Your choices of color are burgundy (new),

red or white. (No pink this year!)

Please use this form to order one or more poinsettias. Place your orders, with cash/check in

an envelope, in the marked box in the church office (make checks payable to: Prince of Peace

Lutheran Church, and note “poinsettia” in the memo line). Orders should be received on or

BEFORE Sunday, December 10th. You may take plants home after the last service on Christ-

mas Eve. Church will be closed Christmas Day, Monday, 12/25 and have limited hours the

rest of the week.

Please mark the quantity of plants, by the color desired below. If applicable, please note “In

honor” or “In memory” of a person(s) of your choosing. Please PRINT CLEARLY the name(s)

for whom they are for and include your name/contact info in case we have questions.
