On behalf of Pan Pacific Pork Expo Committee, Australian Pork Limited (APL), and the Pork Co-operative Research Centre (CRC), it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2016 Pan Pacific Pork Expo (PPPE).

This year’s theme is ‘Inspiring Transformation’. Transformation is an important factor when striving to achieve a successful operation. This year the PPPE looks to showcase innovation from across the industry, and to provide value adding opportunities to your decisions when addressing the challenges ahead.

I am thrilled with the response that PPPE continues to receive from industry sponsors and exhibitors. I would like to formally thank you for your support, which allows us to bring to the delegates world class presentations along with the results of APL and CRC research.

We would like to encourage all delegates to arrive early so they can have the opportunity to chat to exhibitors.

The PPPE Committee has once again allocated funds for supporting APL Members to attend this year’s PPPE, illustrating one of the tangible benefits of being an APL Member. Without this support, it would be difficult to have so many producers attending this important industry event.

To kick off the PPPE technical program, the plenary speaker is Craig Rispin from the Future Trends Group. Craig is a business futurist and innovation expert. He will set the scene for PPPE 2016 with his presentation on ‘Technology Inspired Transformation’. This session is sponsored by Zoetis. Following on from Craig, will be a session on ‘Consumer Attitudes towards Agriculture’ and is sure to be thought provoking. This session is sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim.

Mr John CowardChairman, PPPE Committee 2016

We have assembled Dr Heather Bray (University of Adelaide), Dr Jude Capper (Livestock Sustainability Consultancy, UK) and Rob Cumine (Coles Supermarket) to provide their insights into the consumer and their views on agriculture and the pork industry.

We are delighted to have the Hon. Keith Pitt MP Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister open this year’s PPPE. Mr Pitt has an extensive agricultural background in farming, consulting and training.

Rounding the first day off will be the Industry Cocktail Party from 5.00pm to 8.00pm, proudly sponsored by AMIST Super, providing everyone a great opportunity to network and speak to exhibitors about the new commercial innovations available to producers.

On Thursday 26 May, the concurrent sessions swing into action. As you will see on the program, there is a choice of three sessions plus a workshop:

Topic 1: Refocusing on herd productivity – sponsored by Primegro Technologies

Topic 2: Transforming science into practice – sponsored by Elanco Animal Health

Topic 3: Developing premium markets – sponsored by Australian Pork Limited

Workshop: Workshop: Fact or Fiction – sponsored by and run by Chris Richards & Associates.

Other key sponsors who have played an integral part in delivering this event are JEFO – Lanyard sponsor, Australian Pork Newspaper and Ridley Agriproducts.

To all producers, exhibitors and sponsors alike, I thank you for your ongoing support and I trust that your investment in this event reaps many rewards for your respective businesses.

Last but not least, my thanks to the dedicated PPPE committee who work tirelessly to make this event possible.

Official opening The Hon. Keith Pitt MP, Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister

Keith is the Member for Hinkler. He was born in Bundaberg in 1969.

Educated at Kepnock State High School in Bundaberg, Keith’s first full time job was at Fairymead Sugar Mill. Keith undertook an electrical apprenticeship at the mill including being named Queensland Electrical Apprentice of the Year. He went on to complete a Bachelor degree in computer and electrical engineering at the Queensland University of Technology. He was registered in Queensland as a Professional Electrical Engineer in 2005.

Keith and his wife Allison purchased their first farm in 1998, followed by a second in 2004.

They established a consulting and training business in 2002 (including a registered training organisation ) delivering Vocational Education and Training across the East Coast of the country, but particularly in rural Queensland.

Both farms were later sold due to the demands of their growing businesses. However, Keith’s family continues to farm and run a substantial harvesting business.

An active member of the Hinkler community, Keith was a surf lifesaver for over 10 years. Through his previous business interests Keith supported a wide variety of local community groups and events.

In September 2013, Keith was elected to represent the Hinkler Electorate in the Australian Parliament. He has been a voting member on Parliamentary Joint Standing Committees: Infrastructure and Communications (now communications and the arts); Defence Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Privileges and Members’ Interests.

Keith was heavily involved in the establishment of Taskforce Cadena—a multi-jurisdictional taskforce targeting worker exploitation—which began operating in May 2015. Keith first called for the taskforce in 2014 and had unanimous support from his National Party colleagues in seeing the Taskforce formed.

Keith chaired the Nationals working group on media reform, which considered whether current regulations best serve the needs of regional Australia. Keith believes that local content is key to ensuring all Australians are informed, educated and entertained.

In February 2016, Keith became the Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister, Barnaby Joyce, taking responsibility for a range of policy areas such as natural resource management and the Landcare program, soil health, animal welfare, rural skills and central Queensland water.

He is also a member of the Parliamentary Friends of Surf Life Saving, Parliamentary Friends of Rugby League, Parliamentary Friends of Primary Producers and Parliamentary friends of the Rio Olympic Games.

Keith and Allison have three children.

Plenary Session 2Consumer attitudes towards agriculture

In our fast paced world where information, be it correct or incorrect, is easily accessible by our information hungry consumers, understanding the needs and wants of our consumers is paramount to the future success of our industry. Knowing and understanding consumer and community views on agriculture and the pork industry gives us key insights that will point to potential gaps in knowledge, opportunities and risks for industry.

Dr Jude Capper is an independent Livestock Sustainability Consultant based in the UK, is a thought provoking speaker, and will discuss the value of information to the consumer.

Dr Heather Bray from the University of Adelaide will explore community understanding, and attitudes to, agriculture and the pork industry.

Rob Cumine, the Technical Manager of Agricultural and Animal Welfare for Coles will discuss, from a retail perspective, what Coles consumers want.

Sponsor:

Concurrent Session 1Refocusing on herd productivity

Existing challenges within everyday production can cause dramatic economic losses and increase the cost of production. Therefore we need to refocus on productivity and adapt where necessary to lead to improvements in production.

Over time, the global pork industry has spent considerable resources to understand and ameliorate the effects of seasonal infertility and heat stress. However, every year they remain an issue and impact on productivity in the pork industry. Dr Mark Wilson from Zinpro will detail where we are at in terms of progress, and why is it still an issue.

Variation within herds continues to be a major cost for the Australian pork industry. One of the major causes of variation is pigs with low weaning weights (<5.0 kg at 21 days) and once this variance has occurred it is not easily rectifiable and will continue into the grower-finisher phase. Professor Robert van Barneveld will discuss what we should be focussing on to reduce this variance and its associated costs.

We have the genetics and the knowledge to achieve high numbers of born alive and piglets weaned however, over the past 10 years born alive has increased by only one piglet per litter. In order to improve we need to look to our fellow producers and ask what they are doing and what can I change in my practices? Caleb Smith from Kia-Ora Piggery will talk about practical ways to improve breeding herd performance.

Concurrent Session 3Developing premium markets

Developing premium positioning into Asian markets, particularly China and Hong Kong, where a strong GDP growth and a traditional pork culture aligns, is a focus for the Australian pork industry. We therefore need to learn from the experiences of other industries in how they are obtaining a premium in Asian markets.

Hollis Ashman from Mondelez International has extensive global industry experience in developing new platforms and opportunities for an array of consumer products. Hollis will discuss her work at the Food Innovation Centre and specifically in assisting the confectionary industries to capture premium markets in China and the lessons for the pork industry.

Important lessons can be learnt from the seafood industry, and in particular the premium seafood’s, rock lobster and wild abalone. 2. What does normal look like?Normal changes can be confusing and sometimes difficult to differentiate from changes caused by pathology. This hands on session will demystify some common post mortem findings.

3. It is only H2OWorkshop session illustrating the importance of correct administration of in-water medications as well as the importance water quality plays in the successful outcome of treatments.

Chris Richards & Associates emphasise the importance of training and has directed significant resources to the development of industry-relevant training tools, to the training of its own staff and to working with world-renowned experts to optimise training outcomes.

Training services provided are extensive and continually expanding in scope and nature. Training activities are undertaken on-farm in the piggery environment, and are hands-on and practical, based on adult learning techniques. AutomedBooth 14

Automed assists pork producers to deliver animal medications accurately and to automatically record that data without the need for manual record keeping.

Automed is both a medication delivery device, the (automed applicator), and a backend system the (automed OS). The automed applicator is a robust and fully automated electronic vaccination gun that is feature-rich and able to accurately deliver any medication type. The applicator automatically recognises medicines in the disposable adapter and sets the correct dosage based on all relevant data.

This not only saves time and money, it also ensures that under and overdosing become a thing of the past. Electronic dosing reduces WH&S issues with manual vaccinations.

As animals are medicated, data is immediately synced and backed up to the automed OS, which can be viewed from anywhere and easily integrated into existing management systems. The producer can then access comprehensive and fully auditable medical histories for each animal.

As regulatory pressure increases with consumer demand for more transparency, wholesalers and supermarkets will require better medication systems. Thankfully the pork industry has embraced automation and now, with Automed, the industry will be well placed to meet those challenges.

Australian Waste EngineeringBooth 5

Being mindful of the impact that we have on the environment in both our personal and professional lives is not a new concept for us all. For more than 20 years Australian Waste Engineering have been designing and implementing waste management systems for a variety of industries throughout Australia including the pig, dairy and abattoir industries with a focus on implementing sustainable practices.

Waste product when untreated is a substantial financial burden to any pig farmer or abattoir that will not diminish over time. It becomes more costly both financially and environmentally. If you are not processing your waste product then you are also not recovering or reusing your solids or your water, which is not a sustainable practice both financially and environmentally.

We can supply a variety of pre-treatment and secondary treatment equipment and we are proud to be the sole Australian distributor of the FAN Press Screw Separator. The FAN Press Screw Separator is able to turn your waste product into a valuable commodity in the form of fertilisers and bedding. It enables the reuse of liquids in either your operations or irrigation. We stock and supply a variety of spare parts for distribution to any location in Australia.

At Spanlift, our team has been setting the benchmark for structural steel sheds and buildings across Australia for years. Spanlift structures are innovatively engineered from the ground up, tailored to stand the test of time. Spanlift’s proven expertise in shed design and construction embraces the best approaches to solving problems with a commitment to customer security and value. The result: you can have complete confidence in your Spanlift shed, whether it’s for agricultural, industrial or commercial use.

Spanlift structures are built from hot dipped galvanised structural steel, not purlins; they deliver long, trouble-free service in Australia’s harshest climates. At Spanlift, we don’t believe pressed metal purlins make the grade, especially when compared to engineered structural steel. And the Spanlift design approach builds in a whole lot more. The structural steel construction enables wider spans and larger bay spacings. The configurations are extremely flexible, based on an exclusive modular construction system which saves both time and money.
