12:15 Future Capacity of Hydroelectric Generation in the Latin American Continent

Hydropower is a fully mature renewable energy technology deployed across the region, and has

long-been established as part of the mainstream energy matrix across the Latin American

continent. It makes up 51% of the total installed capacity in the region, currently generates 90% of

Ecuador’s energy, and demonstrates its power as a powerful source of energy generation.

However, what does the future hold for this source in an ever growing environmentally friendly

energy mix?

Points of discussion:

- Financing hydro projects across the continent and the price of hydro PPAs with

government.

- Insights into the regulation intricacies – from environmental laws to collaborating with

communities

- Is small hydro the solution to electrifying areas remote from the main grid?

12:30-13:30

The Rise and Penetration of Modern Renewable Energy Technologies in the Energy Matrix With declining costs, maturing technologies and untapped resource potentials, the region presents itself as an unprecedented opportunity for further developing the renewable energy market. Additionally, studies have proven the continued investment in renewables will provide the region with the opportunity to address key economic, social and environmental challenges in the energy sector. So what do these technologies need in order to fulfil its potential? Points to be discussed:

- Regulation required to ensure the efficient insertion and optimisation of renewable projects in the energy matrix

- Which countries are innovating the most when it comes to incorporating renewable developments through

the implementation of new policies?

- How can the sector overcome technological barriers such as transmission and distribution?

Gas Beyond an Energy Source – An Enabler of Trade and Industrialisation in Latin America The Latin America and Caribbean region is amongst the prominent players in the hydrocarbon industry. With major gas projects proving to bring major investment and deals to local economies, and its importance as a commodity for a country’s exportations, what does the next chapter of Gas look like in the LATAM region? Points to be discussed: - The demand for and the huge potential for the massification of gas across the continent. - What policies need to come into play to enhance investments? - Gas to Power generation – increasing the demand and the new industrial customers - The exportation of LNG to remote areas and foreign countries

Speakers: András Mesics, Sales Director – LATAM, Altaaqa Andrew Hepburn, Gas Policy & Regulatory Affairs, Shell Mike Singh, Chairman and CEO, Telkom Caribe and TC Infra Philippe Dupuis, Counsellor One Total Business Development of Gas Southern Cone, Total E&P Cari Stinebower, Partner, Winston & Strawn

Building the Grid of the Future There’s the concept that the existing grid infrastructure is outdated and in need of not only modernisation, but significant expansion in order to meet the growing energy demand. Is there an opportunity for the region to become a leader in a new electrical system that can increase energy efficiency, provide a reliable service and support the growing shares of the electricity system? Not only this, but can the region be at the forefront of building a smart, low-carbon and low-cost energy system?

Points to be discussed:

- Establishing smart grids, and energy efficiency technologies - Which are the most cost-effective regional integration strategies and how can countries

harmonise national-level energy plans and regulations? - Public Vs Privatisation of transmission lines

The Role of Institutions in Supporting Energy Developments in Latin America and the Caribbean: Developing renewable energy technologies and the massification of gas are essential in order to address the region’s key energy challenges: meeting future energy demand, providing universal access, transforming the electricity system, and mitigating and adapting to climate change. In this context, how can different institutions such as Multilateral Development Banks or Development Financial Institutions support to achieve this? Points to be discussed:

- What role should these institutions play when it comes to assisting securing private sector investment? Should MDBs take the role of risk mitigating?

- Example of USTDA’s feasibility study and technical visit tools, which help project sponsors secure financing.

- Which energy policy designs and developments does the panel view as successful cases?

- What is the perspective from these Institutions on the future of the sector?
