ASTORIA II, EPCM, USASNC-Lavalin Thermal completed this 550 MW dual fuel combined cycle facility in Queens, New York under complex environmental permitting, building requirement and logistical circumstances. Innovative prefabrication, modularization and transportation of equipment to the jobsite were needed to overcome the challenges of the four-acre jobsite with limited lay-down space. It was necessary to preassemble all mechanical, instrumentation and electrical equipment, and to insulate and paint the major equipment off-site and bring it to the site by barge for final installation. SNC-Lavalin completed the preassembly and barging of the equipment, with only a two-week window of opportunity, which was required to meet the project’s commercial operation date.

EMAL ALUMINUM SMELTER, EPCM, UNITED ARAB EMIRATESThe SNC-Lavalin team was required to plan and coordinate the challenges faced during this complex EPCM project. With a peak workforce of 22,700 and coping with extreme weather conditions such as sand storms and temperatures exceeding 50°C, the team oversaw a fleet of approximately 600 trucks that supplied the 859-acre site with enormous quantities of materials and equipment. SNC-Lavalin designed and built the 2,100 MW dual fuel combined cycle power plant to provide dedicated power to the EMAL aluminum smelter, delivering a highly efficient cycle and utilizing sea water cooling towers to eliminate thermal stress on local marine life.

SNC-Lavalin’s global presence allows us to deliver quality solutions for energy sector clients, regardless of their project’s size or scope. SNC-Lavalin offers a broad range of integrated services either as a stand-alone mandate or through long-term arrangements with our key clients. In addition, we have experience with turnkey or EPC mandates, and always ensure our projects are completed in a cost-effective way and respectful of deadlines.

Sustainability3 is SNC-Lavalin’s toolkit for measuringand assessing the overall sustainability of existing andproposed infrastructure and industrial facilities andprojects. Sustainability3 effectively incorporatesfinancial, social and environmental considerationsthroughout all aspects of a project life cycle.

TE MIHI GEOTHERMAL PLANT, EPC, NEW ZEALANDSNC-Lavalin was awarded an EPC contract for the construction of the 166 MW Te Mihi geothermal power project as part of the McConnell Dowell/SNC-Lavalin/Parsons Brinckerhoff joint venture. The project involves designing and building two new geothermal power units of 83 MW each near the existing Wairakei geothermal power station. Geothermal power is a sustainable, renewable, and cost-effective source of energy. SNC-Lavalin prides itself on developing and maintaining sustainable sources of energy production.

PATNOW II THERMAL POWER PLANT, EPC, POLANDThe Patnow II lignite-fired power plant is located 190 km west of Warsaw in Konin, Poland and was a turnkey contract to replace an old polluting plant with what is now one of the most efficient and environmentally clean lignite-fired units in the country. SNC-Lavalin Thermal Power provided project management, construction management, detailed engineering and procurement of all equipment systems. The erection of major equipment, installation of all balance of plant systems and the tie into the Polish grid were also part of this contract for this 460 MW facility. When the work was completed, the team carried out the performance testing and commissioning before turning over the plant to their client.

FIBROMINN BIOMASS THERMAL POWER PLANT, EPC, USASNC-Lavalin was the first EPC contractor to design, engineer, supply, deliver, erect, construct, start up, commission, test and turnover a 55 MW net output power plant, fired on poultry litter and other biomass materials. SNC-Lavalin designed a plant that consisted of a fuel unloading and storage facility capable of handling 400 tons/hour of poultry litter and other biomass fuels as well as designed the combustion boiler to generate enough steam to produce electrical energy for internal consumption and export to the Great River energy grid. This innovative project demonstrates SNC-Lavalin’s ability to meet the needs of our customers no matter how specialized they may be. 5
