17th September 2015 - Week 9 Term 3 Our final week of term looks pretty busy with lots of outdoor activity happening so we hope the weather is kind to us. Potato Competition As part of our Enviro-School Philosophy, we teach the children to grow vegetables at school and encourage the children to grow their own vegetables at home. We have decided to hold our potato growing competition again to encourage the children to grow and care for plants through to harvest. Tomorrow Sol will give the children two seed potatoes and a PB40 Polythene Bag in which to grow them. During the last week of Term Four we have a weigh-in at school and the children bring their named bag, with potatoes still growing inside, along to school for the judging. We will have prizes for heaviest potato, heaviest crop and funniest looking potato. A potato growing info sheet will be sent home with the seed spuds and bag. Rm 2 & 3 Trip Rm 2 and 3 are having a combined class trip on Wednesday where they will be heading to Tukurua and then walking to Onekaka. They will be doing beach activities including kite flying. A notice about this trip went home today. Tackle 7’s The Tackle 7‘s rugby team will travel to Henley School in Richmond on Tuesday to take on the best of the regions Tackle 7‘s teams in the Nelson Schools Regional Finals. It will be a big day as they will have a full day of rugby and then travel back for their last games of miniball. Kaka Release into our National Park We have been invited to be part of the release of female kaka into the Abel Tasman National Park. The kaka are being flown from Te Anau into Golden Bay with their first stop being the Onetahua Marae. At the marae there will be a powhiri or welcome and a blessing of the birds and Rm 4 will be involved with this part of the birds journey. From there they will then be helicoptered into the Wainui aviary where Renford and a group of Room 5 children will meet them. The birds will be released into aviary and held their for a short time getting them used to the site and used to supplementary feed. By holding the birds here it will hopefully attract the curiosity of the resident males and might help to ‗anchor‘ the young birds to the site when the door is eventually opened. Student Advisory Board We are starting the selection process for our four representatives on the Student Advisory Board. The Student Advisory Board is an opportunity for the Adopt a Section partner schools to connect with each other, with their own communities and to develop as leaders. They also get to have input into education programmes, events and drive activities that are of interest to the students. Yesterday our present School Advisory Board members Alex, Chris and Jessie spoke to the year 5 children about what their role involved, what it was like working with students from GBHS and Motueka High and why they would recommend it to others. Those who where interested in applying for the positions were shown the online application form they will need to fill in and also given an information sheet to take home. Wendy Reeve met with the interested students today to clarify the application process answer any questions. MY DEATH SENTENCE

Goosebumps grew all over my skin, my body shook with fear, as I walked up to the house. I saw the man and the shadow looking at me. The flavour of the dust was bitter when the wailing wind blew it in my mouth. I heard a scream from the crows . It was damp and musty . Suddenly the stove turned on high . A pot immediately started boiling . The floor was shaking . I heard a scream getting closer and closer . BOOM! I blacked out . What was wrong with the house? I wondered! TO BE CONTINUED… Will Room 5

Please pay for any outstanding trips, camps, stationery and buses promptly. The school donation is a voluntary payment. We use this money to pay for bus trips, cultural performances, and other activities not covered by our operating grant. Please note that these are tax deductible.

Instalments are welcome and many of our families have already set up regular automatic payments throughout the year.

Payments can be made in cash or cheque or by direct credit. Please make payments to our school account, using your child‘s name as the reference.

Room Four have been writing adventure stories. Here are some exciting excerpts from some of the stories

Bella — ”I was on a plane on my way to London when suddenly the plane gave a lurch and a splutter and

tumbled out of the sky into the middle of the jungle”. “I grabbed two parachutes and handed one to mum”.

“We plunged into the jungle”. “I held mums hand so I wouldn’t fly away from her”.

Joe — Once upon a time there were three brothers, stranded in a forest, two miles away from home. Their

names were Jim and John and not least Bob!! In the forest they had built a stone cabin. The first bro, Jim

was walking through the forest when suddenly he felt something…

Amalie —...Night had fallen and the sea looked like a silken, black carpet that had fallen over a world of

colours. I lay in my hammock, thinking about what tomorrow would bring.

Thump! I woke up with a jolt of fear. My heart was pounding…

Aliana — ...I was nervous. Hunters were coming to fight. At least I was a lion. I roared for the rest of my

pride to help me. Then suddenly the hunters came running after me. The pride arrived just in time. The

hunters were here.

“Boom, boom, bam!”

“Guns,” I thought. I’d better help my pride. I fought and fought.

Who would win?...

Bayleigh —It started raining! Mushy went into the first tree hole he could see.

“Hoot!”

Big eyes glimmered in the dark. It was an owl!!

Mushy jumped out of the tree and set off for an abandoned tree hole...

Room 5 have been doing some creative writing.

Our starter: My family and I went to a place I had never been before. All I knew was that we were far away from home. We

went to a fruit stall and I became so fascinated that I didn‘t realise that my family was leaving. When I went outside they were gone. I was all alone...

There I was staring at the road, alone. MUM!!! DAD!!! Help please. I went back into the store ―oh mister, please help.‖ But he was gone. The store was closed and I was locked in. I sobbed…

Anna Cain.

I can‘t believe it, my family had left me at a fruit stand. Just then a giant eagle picked me up and flew me to a army base. I was captured. I had been in prison for three day. I kicked the guard in the face, grabbed a gun

and yelled hands up, then I knocked everyone out and back flipped into a helicopter home.

Rhys N.

I walked out of the fruit shop and I look around. Saw a red car and hot wired it then zoomed off. Jaxson.

(After being swept away from the fruit store by a vicious hawk)… When the hawk was asleep I tip toed out of the cave and I slipped down the cliff. It was about 20 ft. I fell down, down, down. I wacked my ankle on a rock,

it felt broken. I limped my way to the nearest hospital but on the way I saw someone who looked familiar. Wait, it was my family.

Daisy.

I left the fruit store and in the car park I thought, what‘s that sound. ―YOSHI‖ I yelled in surprise. That‘s right

Yoshi was behind the wheel of a convertible sports car with the hole class crammed in the back. ―Want a ride‖ he yelled over the roar of the V8 engine.

Katie.
