Issue : 204 1 January, 2020

A new beginningWith the Christmas celebrations just

over, another long trying year has cometo an end and we are now ringing in theNew Year with a ray of hope. Overall theyear 2019 in retrospect invokes mixedfeeling where there were times to rejoiceas well as difficult times. Inspite of all odds, the masses are excited and hopeful as theyusher in New Year 2020. A variety of fes-tivities and entertainment programmeshave been planned all over the globe andNavi Mumbai too is in full spirits.

While New Year is definitely a time torejoice with a hope for future, it is also atime to weigh and evaluate as to what wedid and achieve last year as well as to makeplans and resolutions for the coming year.On the whole, the year 2019 was an event-ful and memorable as far as Navi Mumbaiis concerned.

A number of projects are in the pipe-line including the Greenfield airport andalso the Metro which will definitely provea boon to the residents. Connectivity willbecome easier and faster. NMMC is alsomaking efforts to improve its Nationalranking in cleanliness. Several drives arebeing conducted towards this end and peo-ple are whole heartedly supporting the civicbody in all its initiatives. People have be-come more conscious towards environ-ment and are voluntarily using paper orjute bags and are refraining from using thinplastic bags. This is indeed a positive sign.

On the education front too, Navi Mum-bai, as always made steady progress. Likeearlier years, last year too, the HSC andSSC results were heartening and the res-idents were proud of the performances ofthe children. NMMC too is planning tointroduce many changes in educationalfront and is proposing several initiativeswhich will be helpful for the children- de-cision to introduce lockers is one of them.Likewise, the decision to take studentsfrom civic schools to excursions is heart-ening.

However, like any year, the year 2019had its dark sides too. The hike in essen-tial commodities have adversely affectedthe common man. In the real sector too, property rates have gone beyond the reachof the common man.

All in all, we hope and wish that thecoming year 2020 will be the year of pros-perity and all round development. It is alsothe time for us to make solemn resolutionto tirelessly work for the development inNavi Mumbai and towards environment.Newsband takes this opportunity to wishall its esteemed readers a Very Happy,Prosperous and fulfilling New Year.

Southern states ofIndia have proudlyheld on to theirtradition and culture.Constituting majorlyof the four statesKarnataka, Kerala,Tamil Nadu, andAndhra Pradesh, thetradition continues tobe practiced here.Traditional floormurals or rangoli(made using ricepaste) are common inSouth Indian house-hold. Creating arangoli outside thehome is believed tobring good luck. Thetraditional rangolihas now been re-placed by ready mademurals. A widevariety of muraldesigns are availableon the Internet, andyou can select any-thing from traditionalflower patterns tocolourful peacock, deities or anythingyou like. The latest 3-D murals are avail-able in easy cut-pasteand can be installedon any flooring.

The traditionalSouth Indian paint-ings are usually ablend of deities, mostly TirupatiBalaji embellished ingolden or silverformats. South Indianhome decor is nevercomplete without one

Interior decorations and designsof these paintings. Not only are thesepaintings a remem-brance of the richtradition and cultureof Southern India, butthey also look beauti-ful and have thepower to transform adull room into a spaceof colour. Brass vessels areone of the mostimportant elements ofSouth Indian homes.

Often filled withwater and decoratedwith flowers, thesevessels give one thefeeling of a SouthIndian home, evenbefore you enterinside. You can easilyfind intricatelydesigned brass vesselswith traditionalcarvings in themarket. You canplace them on thetable or hang themusing a strongharness. Many SouthIndian homes have abrass vessel placed inthe living room or atthe centre of theirdining tables. Youmay choose to polishwith silver or gold, but nothing canmatch the elegance ofan original brassvessel.

Since India’sclimate is usually hot, choosing floors theredepended on trying tocool the house temper-ature. Granite floors

are the most prefera-ble since they don’tstain and are moredurable than others. Then comes marblewhich also gives theattractive gloss ofgranite, though itmay fade in time. Andfinally comes the mostaffordable of all, tiles. They can crack easilybut they have variouscolor and designoptions that can suiteveryone. If you don’tprefer having acolorful or a lustrousfloor you could also gofor a dark stainedtimber one.

Indian style is richwith colors andpatterns that attractmany individuals tohead for Indianinterior design intheir bedrooms, livingrooms or their wholehomes. Indian style ofinterior design ischaracterized bygiving an enchantingwarm atmospherewith its vivid colorsand unique touches. The Indian cultureappreciates the sun,so painting the wallswith pale yellow ororange is common inIndian adobes. Thesun theme might beapplied to doors andwindows for consisten-cy. To maintain thiswarmth in design, choose terracottatiling or plain woodenbeams for the flooring. Then, you can usedetailed carpets andbamboo mats to coverthe floor in Indianstyle.

Indian interiordesign may have oneor more focal points. For instance, you canplace a round table atthe center of the roomwith accessories on itas a focal point orhave side tables placedat different parts of aroom. Indian furni-ture is usually madeof solid wood that isdecorated with artisticmotifs such as carvedpanels, gold paintedtrim and hand-paintedborders. The cushionsand curtains in Indiandesign are usually inbright cheerful colors.

You can benefit fromSari fabric to makecushion covers andcurtains that resem-ble Indian style.

Interior designideas are completedwith the use ofcomplementaryaccessories. There aremany additions thatcan be done withIndian designs thatcan accentuate thespace beautifully. Asimple addition wouldbe the use of a flowervase with differentcolors and patterns offlowers that suit theoverall interiordesign. Woodendecorations likestatues of cows andantelopes will featurethe animal richnessof India. Most of us haveforgotten that theNew Year is not only atime for revelry butalso for reflection.

“Expectation” is avery important phyco-logical mental healthfactor. It’s not just aword but it carrieshuge emotions alongwith it. In this articleI would like to discusssome aspects of expec-tations. The impact ofexpectations is prima-rily associated withthe seat of power youare holding. When youare in seat of power e.g.you are a Boss, Hus-band, Wife, Father,Mother or Teacher

etc., you expect otherson the weaker side tostand up to your expec-tations. In such a sit-uation when the expec-tations are not metthen high negativeemotions e.g. anger, agitation, being letdown or frustration etcare produced. On thecontrary when you arenot holding the seat ofpower e.g. you are adependent son, daugh-ter, senior citizen, sub-ordinate, spouse oranyway a challengedperson, then when ex-pectations are not met,the feeling of helpless-ness triggers total sad-ness, internalized an-ger, hate and manyother negative feel-ings. Every expecta-tion carries complicat-ed emotions and ex-pressions. Havingworked for many yearsin the field of mentalhealth, I learnt that toget healed, knowing

The Power of Expectations

the root of every nega-tive emotion is a must.

Some powerful tips to

improve Mental Health:

• By accepting thatyour expectationsare unilateral andyour language is ofa critic you canmake desired trans-formation within.

• Become a facilitatorto help the person inmanifestation of thegoals created by you. When you become afacilitator then youare at peace withyour own self andyou become a part-ner in progress andwill never turn ablind eye on difficul-ties being faced byothers.

• If you are in the seatof power then proac-tively work to letyour expectations bebought by the people

or team you are ex-pecting from, so thatthey take-over theresponsibility to de-liver. This approachwill avoid ill feelingsand related emotion-al traumas.

• Become humble andkind by acceptingthat as you couldnever fulfil others’expectations 100%,the same way otherstoo will never be ableto fulfil your expec-tations. This willsurely help in im-proving your mentalhealth. Acceptingrealities even if theyare bitter, is vitalwhen you commenceyour blissful journeyin the path of heal-ing.

• Make it a habit ofanalysing your ex-pectations regularly.Every expectation

has an associated pow-er or lack of power. Many a times compar-

ing yourself or yourloved ones with otherswho are in possessionof things which youdon’t have becomes thetrigger of your unrea-sonable expectations.

In every role, youmust become a facili-tator to make the ex-pectation come true. For example, if youexpect that the lawenforcing agenciesshould not trouble youthen you should be lawabiding and should fol-low societal norms.Similarly as a depen-dent person if you ex-pect your provider tofulfil your desires, then your perfor-mance/ behaviour inall fields or most of thefields should be in ac-cordance with theirexpectations or youshould have a greatcommunicative rela-

tionship.Many are coming to

me who have achievedmany worldly andmaterialistic thingsbut are filled with ex-treme sadness or neg-ative emotions. Just bybeing honest to selfyou can realise thatmost of the times, yourexpectations are unre-alistic.

We should under-stand that if we are notfully healed from with-in and are not at peacewith own self, then wewill not be able to en-joy all our materialis-tic, worldly achieve-ments and accumula-tions.

perity to the people ofour state and nation.May our State and ourNation continue tomarch on the path ofprogress and develop-ment.”

Newsband correspon-dent before the end of2019 spoke to few offi-cials and Project Affect-ed People (PAP’s) aboutthe reality of the NMIAbut they told that thereis a zero chance of theproject getting complet-ed by December, 2020.

If the environmen-talists are to be be-lieved, there is morebad news in the pipelinefor the Navi MumbaiInternational Airport(NMIA). On one handthe CIDCO is claimingthat the villagers whoare happy with the pro-posals offered to themare ready to relocate, but it is said that fewvillagers are very firmon their decision andhave said that they willnot relocate until andunless CIDCO does notgive them what waspromised.

The former Manag-ing Director of CIDCOon the condition of ano-nymity said, “In fact, ifthe pace of work is tak-en into consideration,

than the earliest flightfrom the NMIA runwayis likely to take off onlyin 2023.”

Even though theplanning agency hadspeeded up the workand completed a land-fill of 8.5 meters andalso the diversion of tworivers, the other worklike levelling of a hill-ock that blocks theflight path needs morework. The terrain isdifficult to work on andrequires a high level oftechnical expertise topull it off.

Recently Larsen &Toubro was officiallyawarded the contractfor construction. Butstill there are many dif-ficulties technically.

Vitesh Mhatre, a lo-cal leader from Ulwesaid, “NMIA projectwas started in 2007 andnow almost 12 yearsafter the project, thereis not much progress. Many of the otherprojects which havebeen planned for thesmoother flow of trafficfrom different parts ofMumbai to NMIA, havealso not taken off theway they needed to pro-ceed. Infact many ofthose are still in plan-

ning stage since 2007. One of the mainprojects to enhance con-nectivity to NMIA isthe Mumbai Trans Har-bour Link(MTHL) andin the year 2019 thefirst pier of the 22.5kmsix lane MTHL came upin Sewri which is al-most 49 years after itwas first proposed.”

Mhatre added, “As ofnow nothing is clearwhen the project wouldbe completed. But a ded-icated four lane (12km)expressway to take pas-sengers to the entranceof the new airport (fromNhava to Panvel) andalso the two major rail-ways links planned be-tween the existing San-tacruz Airport and theNew Panvel (NaviMumbai) airportthrough a metro builtby the Mumbai Metro-politan Region Develop-ment Authority (MMR-DA), but both of theprojects are nowherenear completion. Also inthe year 2007-2008 therailway authority andCIDCO planned a newring rail network link-ing Panvel to Vashi butstill it is not clearwhether the same isstill on the cards.”

With the tediousand persevering lifestyleof people living in a met-ropolitan city like Mum-bai, it is very likely forpeople to have mentalhealth issues. Whilethere is no age as towhen one can experi-ence issues like loneli-ness, frustration etc. it

is seen that the teenag-er and the people intheir mid-forties experi-ence it the most. One ofthe main issues that thecity people deal with is,self-consciousness andlow self- esteem. This isbecause of various rea-sons like body image is-sues, speculating a badfuture, obesity, decep-tion, being lied on, etc.

Speaking about theanxiety issues amongst

Students prone to anxiety due to lackof acceptance and adjustments

people in metropolitancities, notedpsychiatrist from In-sight Mind and Eye Clin-ic, Dr. Nahid Dave, said,“Its known that the ma-jority of people dealingwith unstable mentalhealth are in the agegroup of 18-40 where theindividuals deal withstress and anxiety as

these are the major is-sues faced by the specif-ic age group category.”

“A lot of people comein with issues dealingwith stress and anxiety. Most of the people I comeacross have sleep distur-bances. Disturbed sleepcycle is a major red flagfor anxiety,” she added.

“A lot of studentscome to me regardingadjustment issues. Theyare not able to adjust

with the situation ordeal with a specific per-son and that is whenthey have issue of anxi-ety”, she adds.

Student counsellorand psychologist, MsYevette Lee points atlack of patience and ac-ceptance in studentswhich is what triggerssuch issues. “Students

come to me with issueslike future, family is-sues and of course rela-tionships. The basicreason is lack of accep-tance and lower self-es-teem,” she said.

Among the middle-aged people, the com-mon reason for mentalhealth issue is stressdue to hectic work lifeand stiffened personallife.

Shop Organic, Eat organicand Watch organic

Recently I took opportunity to visit Satvit foodfestival in Ahmedabad. Organic Food Festival isone of its kind food festival serving delicious or-ganic food. The aim is to reconnect urban consumers with healthy foodtraditions. Satvik provides a platform for organic farmers from all overIndia to share, learn and grow. Such festivals open up equal opportuni-ties for organic foods producers to publicize their products. It was pleas-ant to see more than 70 food stalls providing approximately 500 dishes, which we do not eat every day or have forgotten about. Also, more than100 farmers have come to sell their organic farm products. According toGita, the significance of a satvik diet is that it’s light in nature, easy todigest, mildly cooling, refreshing and not disturbing to the mind. It isrich in prana (purity), so promotes positive thoughts, happiness andsatisfaction. Gita also says, ‘Traditional satvik food is quite simple andgrown organically on rich fertile soil.

Our Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat has also stressed the needfor adopting natural farming for augmenting the income of farmers.Satvik, food festival in Ahmedabad, highlights diversity in cultures andtastes to stimulate the demand for local crops and their varieties. Thishelp us to reconnect with our rich food heritage.

Promoting organic as lifestyle with all basic components, food, cloth-ing and zero waste living has become one of the most important in or-ganic farming for our future. We need to spread awareness and involve-ment of farmers in organic agriculture at every level. One would findthat more than 50% women farmers are participating, who sell agricul-tural dry products that empowers them and help them understandconsumer demands. Satvik food nourishes the body and helps in main-taining a peaceful state. Satvik food is an excellent food for the goodmind, good health and longevity.

Organic foods provide various benefits to our health as well as ourenvironment. As the organic food industry grows it will lead us to ahealthy way of life building a better future. An organic country is aninspiring vision for our health, our environment, our climate, and ouranimals. Raising public awareness about organic foods and informingthem of advantages of such products would lead to healthy diet andhealthy citizens.

New Year Gifting traditionThe tradition of giving and receiving gifts is an integral part of every

festival. And so it is with New Year's Day. New Year's Day is an occa-sion when we give gifts to our family members, friends and relativesand make their New Year begin on a sweet note.

But do you know how the tradition of gift-giving became associatedwith the New Year celebrations? The tradition has its roots from earliertimes. Today, every country has adopted this tradition of gifting. Theday when every gift shop dreams of making it big on the sales chart isthe first of January. It is believed that this tradition is the best way toheal up our sour relationships with people and develop a feeling of to-getherness and love for people whom we care. That is why we say it withflowers and presents. So, people across the world love to follow this tra-dition.

The Magi were wise men and their gifts were emblematic of tribute, worship and death--of Christ considered as king, God and the sacrificialvictim. The Magi were regarded as the pioneer in gift-giving traditionfollowing the birth of Jesus. But in Europe it is sometimes said to havebeen prevalent even before Jesus was born. In France, Switzerland,Russia and Greece, bartering of presents was in vogue even before Jesus'birth. However, it can certainly be said that the tradition got a newsignificance and that too a religious one with the Magi who presentedtheir gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the Christ Child at hisstable in Bethlehem 2019 years ago.

Letter to the Editor....

By Vinod C. Dixit

New Year 2020 is thetime of the year wheneveryone wants to trea-sure the jubilant spiritof the moment. Ourcountry is a land of di-versity. The long histo-ry of India has exposedit to many cultural andpolitical transforma-tions and as a result, the country is now aproud conglomerationof diverse traditions.

Earlier there weremany cultures whichdecided the day of theNew Year by consider-ing the Moon and theSun cycle. It was onlywhen the Julian calen-dar came into existencewhen January 1 be-came a worldwide NewYear celebration day.

It is said that NewYear’s Day was cel-ebrated in 45 B.C.for the first time.At that time, itwas more of calen-dar adjustmentthan a celebration.Julius Caesar, Ro-man dictator decid-ed to reform failingRoman calendarwhich was intro-duced in 7th centu-ry B.C. It wasbased on the lunarcycle; it used to fellout of phase frequentlywith the seasons andhad to be corrected. Sos-igenes, an Alexandrianastronomer advised us-ing solar cycles likeEgyptians. The yearwas adjusted by adding67 Days to 45 B.C. mak-ing January 1, as firstof year 46 B.C. insteadof March. He also de-cided to add to 1 day toFebruary every fouryears to keep the calen-dar on track.

The whole world sol-emnizes New Year withgreat enthusiasm andenergy. This day has aspecial contingency forpeople. People con-cerned to various walksof life welcome NewYear in their ownhearty ways. The NewYear 2020 is a celebra-tion representing newopportunity, a chanceto start over. A day to

Goodbye to the going year andwelcome the New Year 2020

learn from last yearand to make plans fornext year.

Everyone has rightto express themselvesand feel comfortable inthe way they want toeat, drink or act. Whatwe need is to adjust our-selves with time too. So,along with fun and par-ty, we should under-stand the real meaningof New Year and weshould try to act on it.

We, the human be-ings are with good andbad bundled together. When a child is born inthe world, the heart ispure and it takes inwhatever it observeswhile growing. Whenwe get matured weshape ourselves into agood person. This canbe done by washing

away unwantedthoughts/habits fromus and cultivating newand positive habits anddisciplines as a part oflife. Such a change canhappen with a well de-termined resolution.Every year, we canmake our mind ready toaccept good things thatare difficult though andleave off the bad onesthat are hard to leavethough.

Here I would like topoint out a message onNew Year Day fromDalai Lama which hegave and said that one’slife will improve dras-tically.• Take into account

that great love andgreat achievementinvolve great risk.

• When you lose, don’tlose the lesson.

• Follow the three R’s:Respect for self, Re-

spect for Others,Responsibility for allyour actions.

• Learn the rules soyou know how tobreak them proper-ly.

• Don’t let a little dis-pute injure a greatfriendship.

• When you realizeyou’ve made a mis-take, take immedi-ate steps to correctit.

• Spend some timealone every day.

• Open your arms tochange, but don’tlet go of your values.

• Remember that si-lence is sometimesthe best answer.

• Live good, honour-able life. Then, when you get olderand think back, you’ll be able to en-joy it a second time.• A loving atmo-sphere in yourhome is the foun-dation for your life.• In disagree-ments with lovedones, deal onlywith the currentsituation. Don’tbring up the past.• Share yourknowledge. It’s away to achieve im-mortality.

• Be gentle with theearth.

• Once a year, gosomeplace you’venever been before.

• Remember that thebest relationship isone in which yourlove for each otherexceeds your needfor each other.

• Judge your successby what you had togive up in order toget it.

• Approach love andcooking with reck-less abandon.Every New Year

there is a little hope toeveryone that this yearwill somehow be betterthan the previous one.Let us celebrate theNew Year 2020 and saygoodbye to the goingyear and welcome theNew Year.
