How can we leaveout the most beautifulrelationship on thisearth? To have broth-ers and sisters andcousins is a trueblessing bestowedupon us.

Parents havemore children so thatthe siblings are therefor each other to sharemore love and affec-tion and be there foreach other even afterthe parents havepassed away.

Having a brotheror sister is like hav-ing a close confidantewith whom you canshare everything andanything and alsosomeone who willtake your side comewhat may.

However, if we lookaround us, we do seethat many siblingsare not happy witheach other. Eitherthey have distancedaway or they are notvery close. This mayhappen when parentsare not able to handlesibling rivalry withgood parenting skillsin childhood. I havealready written aboutthis in my earlier ar-ticles.

However even ifparents have notmanaged, it is alwayswiser choice to amendthe situation and re-solve the differences.Do the following tohave a good healthyclose relationship withyour siblings.1. Do not compare

yourself to them.It does happenthat a big toll takeson the relationshipwhen parents rel-atives or otherscompare the chil-dren with each oth-er. It always leaves

Relationship with Siblingsa bitter taste in atleast one sibling. But the most harm-ful is when the sib-lings themselvescompete againsteach other and arejealous or envious ofthem.A very good way toavoid comparison isto accept thestrength and areasof concern of each. While it may seemthat one sibling istoo perfect, but if onelooks closer there isalways a grey area.So avoid compari-sons. Instead lookfor how you bothcompliment eachother.

2. Do not let misunder-standings become awinner.Best way to avoidmisunderstandingsis to have a good

and proper commu-nication. If you haveany situation, speakout, confront, fight ifyou want, but al-ways clear the airand get back togeth-er. Many siblingsfight, but soon theyare together witheach other and all isforgotten. Argu-ments and fightshappen on all rela-tionships, but thatdoes not mean onestarts harboringgrudges.Sort out and re-member that youare for each otherand not against.

3. Always be there. Intimes of need bethere, rememberyou are doing it foryour own blood andnot any stranger. I

have seen many atimes a well off sib-ling refuses to helpthe other one giv-ing also an excusethat it would bemaking the otherone dependent andnot learning tofend for himself orherself. Here Iwould say, give apush start if youhave the capacityand guide the oth-er one to rise aswell.

4. Let the relation-ship grow and nur-ture it even after aspouse comes inyour life. Encour-age your spouses toalso mingle andwhatever positionyou shall take fromthe beginning, thespouse will also fol-low the same. Avoidtalking about the

areas of concern tothe spouse till he orshe is completelygelled with thefamily.

5. Do trips together, always follow thefamily traditionseven after the el-ders are gone andlet the traditionkeep you togetherwith love and bond-ing.Wish you all mag-

ical love with your sib-lings and you all al-ways have the bond-ing.Salma Prabhu is ClinicalPsychologist CareerCounselor and Author ofMom Dad U R Wonderfuland You are My Star. You can write to her on

sometimes leads to dehydration, many states in the country havenow made it mandatory to provide ‘water drinking breaks’ in schools. The concept of water breaks was first introduced in Kerala and laterother south Indian states followed suit including Tamil Nadu, Karna-taka and Telangana and now even Goa has made it mandatory forschools to introduce two water drinking breaks of two minutes dura-tion.

Keeping hydrated is crucial for health and well being. Around 60percent of the body is made up of water. However, many of us, espe-cially children do not consume water or simply forget to keep them-selves hydrated from time to time.

Moreover, studies have revealed that drinking water can help stu-dents in staying focused, creative, and energized. The brain workson a complex electrolyte formula and depends on suitable hydrationto function properly. There is a tendency, especially amongst theyoungsters, to quench thirst by consuming aerated drinks. While softdrinks may temporarily relieve thirst, they actually work as a diuret-ic, making the body lose water faster than it can be utilized. To pro-cess the sugar content of sodas, the body pulls out water from extra-cellular fluids, thus leaving the body less hydrated than before thesoft drink.

While there is no universally agreed quantity of water that mustbe consumed daily, as it is dependent on various factors like bodyweight, age, climate and daily activities, it is commonly recommend-ed to drink eight glasses of water of eight ounces per day. We gener-ally get about 20 percent of our fluid needs from the food we eat andvarious other beverages. However, the requirement for the other 80percent of our fluids needs to get fulfilled each day from drinkingpure water. We lose fluids on a continuous basis from sweating, breath-ing and urinating. When the body loses more water than is beingreplaced, dehydration occurs and brain functions get affected. How-ever, as per the doctors, when the brain is operating with plenty ofwater, students are able to have greater clarity, creativity, focus andquicker thought process. Drinking adequate water also prevents uri-nary track infection and constipation.

Pure water is the best solution for hydration. It is important toinculcate the habit of drinking water right from childhood. Water isthe pre-eminent beverage that can keep the mind and body ener-gized and operate at their best. Water drinking breaks should beintroduced by all the states in the schools to ensure that childrenremain hydrated at all times. Schools should also spread awarenesson the importance of drinking water to the students so that it be-comes a habit.

Mumbai is amongst the ‘Most Traffic CongestedCity’ in World: TomTom Traffic Index 2019

Apart from Mumbai, Pune is another city from Maharashtra featured amongst the top 5 congested cities globally

MUMBAI: Location technology specialist, Tom-Tom (TOM2), has released the results of the Tom-Tom Traffic Index, a report detailing the trafficsituation in 416 cities in 57 countries. Mumbaitakes the 4th spot this year with 65% conges-tion level (extra travel time stuck in traffic).Mumbaikars driving during peak hours spendan extra 209 hours, i.e., 8 days, 17 hours in traf-fic each year. The city’s heaviest congestion(101%) was on September 9, 2019 while its low-est congestion (19%) was recorded on March 21,2019.

At 5th position, Pune is the other city fromMaharashtra to be featured amongst the globaltop 5 congested cities. The city’s congestion lev-el stood at 59%. On an average, Punekars driv-ing during peak hours spend an extra 193 hours,i.e., 8 days, 1 hour in traffic each year. Pune’sheaviest congestion (93%) was recorded on Au-gust 2, 2019, while its lowest congestion (30%)was recorded on October 27, 2019.

India topped the TomTom Traffic Index 2019as 4 of its cities amongst the 10 most congestedcities globally with Bengaluru as the top mostcongested city in the world with 71% congestionlevel while Mumbai (65%), Pune (59%) and NewDelhi (56%) ranks 4th, 5th and 8th respectively. The other global cities featured amongst the top10 include Manila from The Philippines, Bogotafrom Colombia, Moscow from Russia; Lima fromPeru, Istanbul from Turkey, and Jakarta fromIndonesia.

Congestion level across Indian CitiesBengaluru: On an average, Bengalureans driv-

ing during peak hours, spend an extra 243 hours,i.e., 10 days, 3 hours in traffic each year. Thecity’s heaviest congestion (103 %) was on August20, 2019 while its lowest congestion (30%) wason April 6, 2019.

New Delhi: On an average, Delhiites drivingduring peak hours spend an extra 190 hours,i.e., 7 days, 22 hours in traffic each year. Thecity’s heaviest congestion (81%) was recorded onOctober 23, 2019 while its lowest congestion (6%)was recorded on March 21, 2019.

Congestion up, globally: At what cost?Traffic congestion has increased globally dur-

ing the last decade, and 239 cities (57%) TomTomincluded in the new Traffic Index report had in-creased congestion levels between 2018 and 2019,with only 63 cities showing measurable decreas-es. This global increase in congestion, despite be-ing an indicator of a strong economy, also costseconomies billions.

Werner van Huyssteen, General Manager, Tom-Tom India, said: “Globally, there’s a long road totravel until congestion levels are brought undercontrol. In time, the car-sharing services will helpalleviate congestion, however, planners and poli-cymakers need to use all the tools available to themto analyse traffic levels and impacts, so they canmake critical infrastructure decisions.”

How do you beat traffic congestion?Next time you are heading into traffic, consid-

er these helpful tips:1. Plan before you go. Taking a few moments be-

fore heading out the door to inform yourself onthe road conditions on the way to your desti-nation will help you consider your alternativesand decide on the best course of action.

2. Trust technology to help you. It may be uncom-fortable to take the road less traveled simplybecause your satnav suggests it’s the fastestone. Often, if you cannot see that a road is in-deed congested, it is hard to believe it. Dare totake the alternative route offered by up-to-datenavigation, because it is basing its recommen-dation on real-time traffic conditions on theroute you are taking.

3. Change your driving habits. Most often, traffic willpeak at certain times of the day, depending onlocation. This is clear in each of the city pagesin the TomTom Traffic Index report, where weprovide the average congestion level for eachhour of each day of the week. Use the informa-tion available to adjust your departure timeaccordingly. Leaving early or late from a loca-tion might mean avoiding time spent in trafficon the road.

4. Consider alternatives. Does your trip have to be

made by car? If your planned activity is time-sensitive and you cannot change your depar-ture times, consider ride-sharing, public trans-port or non-motorized options such as cyclingor scooters.

5. Work with your city. Ultimately, improving mo-bility in our cities is a collaborative effort. To-gether, city authorities, vehicle manufactur-ers, traffic signal system providers, parkingfacilities, traffic information providers, sharedmobility providers, startups and, most impor-tantly, the public, are experimenting andtransforming cities worldwide. Inform yourselfof the initiatives taking place in your urbanarea and how you can benefit from them.

Bank merger has taken tollon bank staff

In a major relief to lakhs of the policy holders, the Insurance regulator IRDA has issued guide-lines to ensure that the Government’s 10 BankMerger will not affect any merging lenders customer who are a part of abanks group health Policy. The circular states that insurance policies ofthe merged Bank customers shall be services by the companies whichissued the policies till the end of policy period. On Maturity of the cur-rent policy of the merged bank the acquiring bank may renew it withthe same insurance company of the merged bank. IRDA’s earlier ruleswould have fired the merging banks to discontinue some policies. At theoutset it seems that IRDA has looked for the benefit of the policy holders. But the guideline says that it shall continue only for 12 months after thedate of merger. Vijaya Bank which was merged with Bank of Barodaand their 64000 card holders are kept out of this. No fault of theirs theyare required to pay premium as high as 30 to 300 percent.

The point of discussion is when the Finance Ministry is the authori-ty for both the banking and insurance why has no thought been given tothis on the portability of group insurance? Why should anyone pay 300percent more premium for his bank being merged? Hope that the tem-porary relied given or assured to be given is extended permanently. Vi-jaya Bank Customers and Card holders too should be considered.
