Issue : 29 4 June, 2019

A challenge for the new FMThe economic crisis is deepening. The second Modi govern-

ment takes office amid a clear economic slowdown. The new Fi-nance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, is facing an under-perform-ing economy. The unemployment data, controversially suppressedby the Union government so far, showed that joblessness was at a45-year high of 6.1% in 2017-18. These numbers highlight thechallenges ahead for Ms. Sitharaman as she sits down to draft theBudget for 2019-20, to be presented on July 5.

The good news is that inflation is undershooting the target andoil prices are on the retreat again. But the rural economy remainsin distress. Overall economic growth in the first quarter of thisfiscal is likely to remain subdued, and any improvement is unlike-ly until the late second quarter or the early third. There are nottoo many options before the new Finance Minister.

She has to boost consumption and take measures to boost pri-vate investment. A rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India, widelyexpected this week, would certainly help boost sentiment. But itis the Budget that will really set the tone for the economy.

The easy part was winning the election by appealing to HinduNationalist sentiment and increasing tensions with Pakistan overthe Pulwama incident. Now however with the economy slowingand unemployment rising, Modi will have to take the needed stepsto introduce market labor and land reforms. As a result FDI isdeclining. There is little difference between NDA and UPA in thisregard.

The economy as a whole is terribly saddled due to the NPAsthat wiped nearly $200 billion from banks’ capital, bottle neckingfurther flow of credit to industries. Government must immediatelybring back the Land Acquisition Bill to remove bottlenecks facedby huge investors & making India more attractive for investmentin order to fill the capital deficiency. Easing of labor laws is a mustto make sure protection laws don’t hinder & push back investors. We need to roll out red carpet to them to generate jobs.

Some people, when reporting about India’s problems, alwayssearch for negative news about India and highlight it. It is not justIndia but the whole world which seems to be going through aneconomic slowdown. The Modi government does show promiseof helping India overcome this slowdown.

National Economic development is not a magic-wand. Actionneeds years of Planning, Resources conversions, Education, Man-agement/Administration to steer and maneuver the country to theposition of top economic power.

Though some external factors do influence the economy in aliberalised world, our nation has great potential to tackle the in-ternal economic issues. Fortunately, the nation is also rich in pro-fessionals in the field. The finance minister needs to take advicefrom the economists too & take the most optimum steps to re-build the economy.

Lastly, the expected rate-cut by Reserve Bank of India shouldnot reduce the interest rates on the deposits of Senior Citizens inthe country.

“Life is like riding a

bicycle. To keep

your balance you

must keep moving”Today morning I

went to morning walkand I witnessed manypeople in groups cyclingon road, one of myfriends was amongthem .She shouted tome “happy world cy-cling day”, and then Iremembered it is 3 JuneWorld Bicycle day. There is a story to itthat on 12th April 2018,all 193 United Nations’member states adopteda resolution at the 72ndsession of General As-sembly – General As-sembly Resolution A/Res/72/272, to declare3rd June as the “WorldBicycle Day”, to be ob-served annually. Thisidea of a global “WorldBicycle Day” was prop-agated by Leszek J.Sibilski, a professor ofsociology and a formermember of the PolishNational Olympic Cy-cling Team. He workedas a sports reporter, cov-ering major cyclingevents throughout theglobe and he is also asocial activist and hadbeen advocating in theUN, the rights for per-sons with disabilities.Professor Sibilski em-barked on an academicproject to study the roleof bicycles in develop-ment three years priorto the announcement of“World Bicycle Day”,.That time he had noidea that the project

Move fast, live longer

would inspire a massiveadvocacy effort to havethe United Nations des-ignate a day to promotethe use of bicycle aroundthe world. This startedwith Sibilski’s twoblogs. The first blog wastitled “Cycling is Every-one’s Business” whichhe wrote in February2015. The. The secondblog was written a yearlater and is supposed topropagate the idea. It

was titled- “Why is thereno World Day for theBicycle”. After twoweeks of writing thisblog Professor Sibilskigot an opportunity topresent his case for“World Bicycle Day” ata “Scientists for Cy-cling” conference inTaipei, Taiwan, and thepresentation was so ef-fective that the need ofWorld cycle day was in-deed justified. And withthe support of Turkmen-istan, whose officials atthe UN worked hard in

cooperation with Profes-sor Sibilski to make the“World Bicycle Day” areality. It is announcedthat the day will be ob-served by all the bicycleenthusiasts across theglobe with great excite-ment and fun. Thisevent’s goal was tomainly focus on devot-ing particular attentionto the bicycle in currentera of automobiles. Many associations had

started arranging cyclerally to commemoratethis day .The idea be-hind World Cycle daypromotes the use of bi-cycle as a mobilizationand empowerment tool, stressed on the fact thata bicycle could be a cat-alyst for holistic devel-opment.

This is the worldview but I want to tellabout my personal expe-rience. I am born andbrought up in Kolkata

and I used to visit my maternal grandparent’s placein summers. I found that college were very far fromthe village and students used bicycle to travel. Mymasi who was 2 years older to me was travellingdaily to many miles on bicycle for study .It was outof necessity and in metro cities, we are taking cy-cling to improve health and well-being. India hasadopted this cycling in a big way, In southern cityof Bangalore even first bicycle mayor was chosen,a fortnight before world bicycle day, in line withVadodara in Gujarat and Guwahati in Assam. Thisis the time when mineral and oil sources are be-coming less and less so we have to search for lesseconomic options. We have to acknowledge the roleof bicycle as an economical, sustainable and envi-ronment friendly mode of transport. We can pro-mote bicycle as a tool to get access to education andhealth care facilities, in places where other trans-port options are scarce.

We can list the benefits of cycling as such:1) A bicycle is cheap than other alternative

modes of transport and , It is the only transportoption for poor working class such as daily wagelabours, farmers etc.

2) Bicycle serves as a tool for development, byproviding access to education and health care. It isa major transportation option to school, for childrenresiding in remote locations in underdeveloped ar-eas where there are no proper roads.

3) Bicycle is a much healthier mode of transportthan a car, because they have been proven to re-duce stress, improve mood and reduces the risk ofheart diseases and diabetes. This health advantageof bicycle has made it popular even in many devel-oped nations

4) The operation of a bicycle leaves zero carbonfootprints, as there is no fuel combustion involved.A bicycle only runs on manual force exerted by itsrider and is in fact a healthier as well as environ-ment friendly mode of transport.

5) A bicycle is lighter and does h less damage tothe roads than car or any other vehicle. This meansa lot less money spend on road maintenance andmuch on welfare schemes.

6) Bicycle is very light and occupies almost neg-ligible space so it can be parked almost anywherewithout any trouble. Today it is getting difficult tofind a convenient parking space for your vehicle.Using bicycle relieves you from the stress of park-ing as it could be practically parked anywhere and

in a very little space.7) Now a days, traffic jams are a common occur-

rence in any metropolitan city. With a car on roadyou could be stuck for hours, getting late for workbut bicycle saves the time, as many cities have ded-icated tracks for bicycle, also it is much easy tomanoeuvre a bicycle through the traffic.

So the gist is that to be fit and healthy you needto be physically active. If you do regular physicalactivity, it can help protect you from serious diseasessuch as obesity, heart disease, cancer, mental illness, diabetes and arthritis. So riding your bicycle regu-larly is one of the best ways to reduce your risk ofhealth problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle. In general cycling is a healthy, low-impact exercisethat can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from youngchildren to older adults. It is also fun, cheap andgood for the environment and it is a good way tocontrol or reduce weight, as it raises your metabolicrate, builds muscle and burns body fat. If you’re try-ing to lose weight, cycling can be your option, but itmust be combined with a healthy eating plan. Wecan say that cycling is a comfortable form of exerciseand you can change the time and intensity – it canbe built up slowly and varied to suit you.

So be healthy and cycle to good health.

Sects should adoptexpansiveness for the

‘Hindu Nation’‘A fine coordination between spiritual prac-

tice and propagation of Dharma (Dhar-maPrasar) is being witnessed in the 8th All IndiaConvention for the ‘Hindu Nation’. I was pleasedto observe on arriving at Convention that thereis somebody who cares about Hindu Dharma.

The Sindhi community had gone astray fromthe mission for the Nation and Dharma for sometime due to economic and other reasons; how-ever, the situation has changed now, and thiscommunity is also in the forefront of the mis-sion for the Nation and Dharma. The ‘HinduNation’ will definitely materialise; however, forthis purpose, the sects will have to abandon theirnarrow-mindedness and work by adopting ex-pansiveness’, appealed Pujya Santshri (Dr.)Santosh Ji Maharaj of Shivadhara Ashram fromAmravati (Maharashtra). He was speaking onthe 6th day (3rd June) of the 8th All India Con-vention for the ‘Hindu Nation’ on 3rd June atVidyadhiraj Sabhagruha of Shri Ramnath Tem-ple on the topic ‘Efforts made to protect the cul-ture in the Sindhi community and successachieved’. On this occasion, Shri. Sanjay Singh,State coordinator of Hindu Janajagruti Samitifor Bihar read out the resolutions proposed inthe Convention. Tamil Nadu State is moving in the direc-tion of Jammu-Kashmir ! - Shri. Arjun Sam-path, Hindu Makkal Katchi, Tamil Nadu

‘Due to the atheist DMK Government, thesituation in Tamil Nadu has become like thatof in Jammu-Kashmir. The anti-Hindu andanti-India forces have become domineeringthere. Jihadi terrorists have been given a freerun in the State. So far, more than 173 devoutHindu leaders have been selectively killed inthe State; however, nobody in the country rais-es a voice about it. The people should protestvociferously about it’, said Shri. Arjun Sampath.

Shri. Munna Kumar Sharma, Nation-al Secretary of All India Hindu Mahasabha saidduring his speech that Hindu JanajagrutiSamiti is doing an appreciable work by bring-ing Hindu organisations spread out all overIndia. Shri. Suryakant Kelkar, National Coor-dinator of Bharat Raksha Manch, Bhopal saidthat when the work of NRC (National Registerof Citizens) was started in Assam, in its prima-ry stage itself 40 lakh people out of 3 lakh 30thousand couldn’t give proves of their Nation-ality. And hence NRC should be implementedin every state of Bharat to identify the Bang-ladeshi Muslim infiltrators.

Enough Is enough on Hindiimposition - Why then this

Kolaveri di on Hindi? The draft of the National Education Policy,

which proposes a three-language formula, hasevoked strong opposition from political parties inTamil Nadu, which has witnessed anti-Hindi ag-itations in the past.

As the day (26 January 1965) of switching overto Hindi as sole official language approached, theanti-Hindi movement gained momentum in Ma-dras State with increased support from collegestudents. On 25 January, a full-scale riot brokeout in the southern city of Madurai, sparked offby a minor altercation between agitating studentsand Congress party members. The riots spreadall over Madras State, continued unabated for thenext two months, and were marked by acts of vi-olence, arson, looting, police firing and lathi charg-es. The Congress Government of the Madras State, called in paramilitary forces to quell the agita-tion; their involvement resulted in the deaths ofpeople. To calm the situation, Indian Prime Min-ister Lal Bahadur Shastri gave assurances thatEnglish would continue to be used as the officiallanguage as long as the non-Hindi speaking stateswanted. The riots subsided after Shastri’s assur-ance, as did the student agitation.

Hindi language is part and parcel of our edu-cational system and it is a national language.People from South suffer because they lack inlearning in Hindi language. When a Tamilian goout of Tamil Nadu he should learn other languag-es and learning Hindi is more important. We stu-dents studied in schools during 1960s still remem-ber the days of learning Hindi. We used to writein English and read Hindi in front of the teacher. And once I was caught red handed and I felt sorryfor not knowing the language. By the time we re-alised our mistakes, the Hindi agitation came in1965 and the trains were burnt in the aftermathand that was the end of our learning period of aNational language.

After finishing my college education when Iwas appointed as a Bank clerk in Ghaziabad UP,I had a bitter time dealing with my clients. OnceI issued a draft to a customer in a record time andthe client thanked me saying Thannewad and Iasked what then he said Shukriya and again whatI asked then he politely told “Thank You” and wentoff from that place. I took less time to issue a draftbut I took more time to accept his thanks. I feltshy and from that day onwards started learningthe language through hearing Hindi filimi songs.

Letters to the Editor....But still to date I cannot read and write Hindi, thanks to the DMK government in Tamil Nadu.

Why can’t the Dravidian parties let the deci-sion to be made by the people of TN? Peoplewho want to learn will learn, others won’t. Whyare they imposing that TN people must learnonly Tamil? These parties are just doing to cre-ate an unfavorable impression of the central gov-ernment. Karunanidhi’s children and grand-children all go to private and internationalschools and learn multitude of languages.

What does ‘imposed’ mean? When there is achoice, it cannot be imposition. There are stu-dents of many communities in the Schools ofTN. They should have the option of learningHindi. DMK cadre need not learn it, becausetheir job description is to oppose Hindi. Butthose Tamils seeking jobs in the North, maywant to learn Hindi. Dravidian parties shouldstop their non-sense on preaching against Hin-di. Why did DMK party agreed to introduceUrudu in school. Creating fear that Tamil be-comes extinct from daily usage like Latin orSanskrit is totally absurd.

The message loud and clear. People in TamilNadu do not want to learn Hindi at any cost. The Educational Framework Policy in 2016,submitted the report for follow up means in im-plementation. It requires common sense, deepconsultations, discussions and then arrive at adecision. There are no takers for Hindi in TamilNadu but the Hindi films are highly successfulfrom the days of Aradhana film. Why then thisKolaveri di.
