    St Mary’s Sixth Form

IntroductionWe are very pleased to introduce you to post-16 study at St Mary’s; this booklet givesinformation for prospective students and their parents.

Post-16 education should be considered carefully; the choices you make now will have far-reaching implications for your future and you must make these choices using all of thepossible information available to you.

There are various reasons why you may choose to continue in education:

You enjoy studying and would like to pursue your favourite subjects at a higher level and/or begin a new course of study

You have a particular career in mind which needs a qualification gained throughhigher education, or you want relevant vocational experience to enable you toembark on that career path

You have no definite career plans, but you would like to continue your educationand improve your qualifications and skills

All of these are especially valid in the increasingly competitive employment and educationmarket.

The advantages in choosing to stay on at St Mary’s are:

You will be taught by staff who know you well and can support you to makeexcellent progress

There is no need for ‘settling-in’ to a new place and so less time is lost at thebeginning of the course. This is especially important because the firstexaminations occur in the January of Year 12

In some subjects there are smaller teaching groups than you have been used toand so you get more individual attention and active participation

St Mary’s students have an excellent track-record in moving on to their firstchoice universities (including Oxbridge) and careers

You will have opportunities to take on more responsibility and enjoy privileges inan institution with which you are already familiar

OFSTED says “Students are entirely happy with the academic and personal support theyreceive, and appreciative: ‘You get personal attention here.’ There are many opportunitiesfor them to contribute to school life and the community and also “Teaching ispredominantly good”

Courses and CurriculumWe offer a full range of subjects at level 2 (GCSE and equivalent) and level 3 (AS and A

level and equivalent). Vocational and applied courses are included alongside the moretraditional academic subjects. We aim to give maximum possible flexibility in thecurriculum so that so that you will have access to the fullest range of opportunities beyondYear 13.
