    Guimares Antnio S

Guimares has a very important symbolic value for the Portuguese

identity , since it was here that Portugal first came into being in the

12th century. The well-preserved city reflects the evolution of civil

architecture from the Middle Ages until the 19th century. The specialised

building techniques that were developed here were later applied all

over the world, in the Portuguese colonies, in Africa and the New World.Find out more at www.visitportugal.com

The cathedral and the Torre dos Clrigos have become the very symbols

    Mosteiro de Alcobaa Rui Cunha

This is one of the most important Cistercian abbeys in Europe and a

masterpiece of Cistercian art. It was founded in the 12th century as a

donation from the first king of Portugal, Dom Afonso Henriques, to

St. Bernard of Clairvaux. The building of the church began with the apse,

as was the normal practice at that time, and its three naves all of the same

    Mosteiro da Batalha Antnio Sacchetti

A masterpiece of creative genius, the Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitria

was built in fulfilment of a vow made by Dom Joo I, in gratitude for the

    Mosteiro dos Jernimos Joo Paulo

The Mosteiro dos Jernimos is a remarkable work of architecture

commissioned by the king Dom Manuel I at the beginning of the

16th century. It is considered the jewel of the exclusively Portuguese

Manueline style, combining architectural features from the late Gothic

and Renaissance periods and associating with this a royal symbolism

that makes it quite remarkable.Find out more at www.visitportugal.com

    D. Manuel I also commissioned the building of the Torre de Belm, putting

into practice an innovative and effective plan for defending the river

and protecting Lisbon, combining the tower with other defensive structures

situated at the entrance to the river estuary. As a reminder of the kings

Palcio da Pena, Sintra Rui Cunha

In the 19th century, Sintra was one of the first places in Europe where

romantic architecture was to be tried out. The king Fernando, married

to the queen Maria II, transformed the ruins of a monastery into a castle,

brilliantly combining Gothic, Islamic and Renaissance features, surrounded

by a park of exuberant and exotic vegetation, in keeping with the taste

of that time. This model was followed in other palaces built in the Serrade Sintra and served as an inspiration in other European landscapes.Find out more at www.visitportugal.com

    Templo Romano, vora Jos Manuel

With its origins dating back to Roman times, vora had its golden age in

the 15th century, when it became the residence of the kings of Portugal. Its

unique character derives from its white limewashed houses, with their tiled

interior decorations and wrought-iron balconies, making the city as a whole

representative of a distinct historical period (16th to 18th centuries). Its

monuments had a decisive influence on the Portuguese architecture that wasintroduced into Brazil.Find out more at www.visitportugal.com

Angra do Herosmo forms a quite unique architectural whole, having

been a mandatory port of call for vessels sailing between Europe and other

continents from the 15th century until the appearance of steamboats in the

19th century. The citys imposing fortifications, built more than 400 years

ago, represent a unique example of military architecture.

Vinha da Ilha do Pico Antnio S

On the island of Pico, you will find a remarkable example of the transformation

of an apparently unproductive and rocky volcanic terrain into an extraordinary

landscape of vineyards. The hillsides sloping down to the sea are marked by

a grid of black stone walls separating the vines, testifying to the hard work

of generations ofsmall farmers who successfully overcame a hostile climateto create their own distinctive way of life and produce a wine of great quality.Find out more at www.visitportugal.com
