AYIGYA WORKS!“Ayigya works!” is about supporting and encouraging trading, in which the market plays a central role. The vision of the project is to improve the living conditions of the people of Ayigya by establishing a vibrant, sustainable and flourishing working environment. “Ayigya works!” focusses on the people that live and work in Ayigya and on the existing forms of businesses in the market area, around the trotro-station and that of the street venders.

‘If we want to work towards a vibrant, sustainable and flourishing Ayigya in which living conditions are constantly improving, realistically we have to focus on enhancing the existing qualities. The way to achieve this is with small affordable interventions, working from the bottom-up.’

TRADE IN AYIGYA Income in Ayigya is for the largest part earned with petty trade. Petty trade is a form of informal economical activity, mostly done by small entrepreneurs with limited skills and education. Informal sector businesses are valuable nursery for generating better jobs.

THE SELF EMPLOYEDIndividuals working on their own accounts, either alone or with the support of unpaid family members are called self-employed. The self-employed trader has a local sales market, no or little technology and few links to providers and other support institutions. They often are dynamic sales entrepreneurs with a great sense of ownership.

AYIGYA MARKETSpecial to Ayigya is the local market which is a satelite-market of the central market of Kumasi, West Africa’s biggest market. Ayigya market is a community market, but the construction of it was funded by the World Bank through the Ghana Government and the Kumasi Metropolitan. The market merchants pay a daily tax to the local government and also contribute

to the maintenance of the market through the market associations. The market offers Ayigya a great opportunity to attract more customers and develop more economical activity.

8 YEARS OLD SCHOOLBOY, STREET VENDER

Ebeneezer is a normal child from Ayigya. His day is split up

into two parts. In the morning he goes to school like every

other child. In the afternoon he sells candy to earn some

money for his family. Ebeneezer has to walk through busy

traffic in the hot sun with a heavy box on his head, which

he has to take back home every night. He has no specific

selling location and it‘s difficult to meet up with other street

venders.

29 YEARS OLD, TAILOR WITH SMALL WORKSHOP

Brice is a big strong man who lives with his wife and son in a

small house. He owns a small workshop near Ayigya market,

in which he makes clothes. The problem with the workshop is

that it‘s in a very bad state. During hard rains the roof leaks

destroying newly made clothes. There is no place to display his

clothes and the shop is hidden away from the road. During the

night it is not save to leave the clothes in the shop.

Maria rents a small market stall in the Ayigya

market. In the morning she buys fruit and

vegetables at Kumasi central market to sell.

She prepares and cleans her products before

displaying them. At the end of the day she has

to empty her stall and carry everything to her

house. A lot of her products go bad due to the

lack of cold storage.

34 YEARS OLD, PHOTOGRAPHER

Douglas has a digital camera which he uses to make a

living. He walks through Ayigya taking photos of people

for two Cedi. At the end of the day he goes to the cen-

ter of Kumasi to develop them after which he returns to

his customers. This takes him almost two hours a day.

His customers find it hard to find Douglas.

ANALYSES ON TRADING IN AYIGYAThe self-employed in Ayigya can be divided in three groups;- The street venders- The shop owners- The market merchants Shown on the top is the analysis on the features of the

street venders. Similar analysis was done on all of the types of self-employed traders shown below.This analysis functions as a base for designs on the market, the NIM and the streetvender-homebase. Additional research was done on the current structures in which these traders operate, which in turn lead to the proposed building methods and materials.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTThe first investment involves infrastructure and sidewalks that lead to the market from the main street. In a later stage, the infrastructure will be connected to the affordable housing area, in the north of Ayigya. The proposed roads that lead to the market involve technical features that bring solutions to different

identified problems such as erosion, bad roads, unsafe electricity and poor drainage. The realization of the project can steadily grow in phases. As soon as more money is generated by parties such as the Ayigya Association, financial institutions and private investors, it can be reinvested in further development.

NEW IMPROVED MARKETSHOPThe New Improved Market shop is an affordable shop that is developed with and completed by the owner. The foundation of the NIM is a new sidewalk, which prevents erosion and provides Ayigya with basic infrastructure. Based upon analysis on the needs of the self-employed and the existing building materials in Ayigya, different shop typologies are designed.

These typologies only consist of basic elements which form the pillars of the NIM. The rest of the NIM can be completed by the owner using whatever materials. This makes the NIM very affordable and easy accessible for the people of Ayigya. The NIM is designed to be easily expanded and upgraded in the future.

At night the NIM functions as an extension of the compound. This arrangement with the owner of the compound behind the NIM, provides Brice with extra income.

THE MARKET AS CENTRE OF AYIGYAAlthough the existing market is centrally located in Ayigya it is not very well known. Besides it it poorly ventilated and facilities for the traders and customers are minimal. The market can be improved with small interventions though. Market traders have few basic needs like storage rooms, clean water supply, electricity and decent sanitation.

These are made inside the existing structures that surround the market. One empty containershop is taken down to open up the entrance. By implementing these facilities in the market, Maria can now safely store her goods, wash and cool the fruit and vegetables that she sells, and use a clean toilet.

STREETVENDER HOMEBASEThe streetvender home base is a simple construction made out of sandcrete blocks and metal locker doors. The lockers provide the streetvenders with the possibility to store their goods during the night. The street vender homebase can be used to rest in the sha-de or to display goods to trade. It provides the streetvenders with a place to affiliate and connect with other streetvenders

and the streetvender associations.With the streetvender homebase Ebeneezer now has a conductive place to store his goods. He has a stall number and only needs to pay the fee once a day. He still sells on the streets but has more customers since he has variety to sell. He rents the stall from the Streetvenders Association.
