Austin Downtown Skyscraper
Austin Blossom
3D Design Tool : 3DS MAX, Sketch-UpRendering Tool : V-ray (3ds max)Critic : Michael Benedikt, John Szot
This is a project of high-rise residential point towers in Austin downtown. The initial design idea came from an object in nature. I pick a long thin flower due to its porosity and possibility as accommodation. My idea developed by Austrian Art Nouveau. I was inspired by Austrian secession people like Joseph Hoffmann and Otto Wagner. As they did, I tried to find the organic objects in nature. While their pattern or textile works were focused on two dimensional, mine is on more three dimensional pattern study and geometry study. I did not want to build a crazy tower but an imaginary place like the one in the movie, Avatar. I wanted people watching, getting into, experiencing it to blossom their own imaginary world. My intention is that the point tower becomes a threshold between the hectic city and the healing forest. I hope you become a bee or butterfly when you get into the site.
The tower has exoskeleton structure system, and it is little bit borrowed into the tower to hide its big volume and exaggerate each blossom by its shadow. The idea of the secondary structure to hold the glazing is from vein of the leaves. The vein structure keep the occupants from vertigo and loneliness hanging in the air. Unit design was most tricky part because of the tower concept. I wanted to make each unit has its own outdoor terrace. The blossom system has two types of groups. Each one has four blossoms rotating around the core. The concave part of the blos-som becomes the outdoor terrace. It was a dilemma to design indoor space as a common space or reflecting tower design. I decided to make more common space for the convenience of general life, but I put a porous patterned partitions which re-flect the concept of the tower design
Also the studio emphasized designing by modeling and rendering digitally using 3ds max and v-ray.

Revitalizing Urban Square
Young Square
3D Design Tool : 3DS MAXRendering Tool : V-ray (3ds max)Critic : Gary Wang
In order to revitalize the downtown area, I proposed a new type of town square. It will give the town a unique image. It also will provide a solution to several city issues such as problems with low income jobs, high unemployment and a local economy highly dependent on the University. Highly educated young people are unable to find jobs in their field or find only low wage jobs. With this new revitalization, San Marcos will become a venture town.
City of Young Professionals San Marcos will become a famous city of young professionals in Texas with the chance to establish their own offices, and the ability to support a new market place. Furthermore, the youth from adjacent cities including Austin and San Antonio will be eager to move to San Marcos because of the lower rental costs and entrepre-neur-friendly environment. While San Francisco has Silicon valley, Texas will now have San Marcos. The downtown area will become a hot-spot for young professionals, art-ists and entrepreneurs. The civic center will be full of energy offering venture people, and other citizens a place to shop for unique items, enjoy exhibitions, live music, flea markets, farmers markets, restaurants, bars, and rental space for weddings, and spe-cial events.

Downtown and the Square: the center of youth entrepreneurs
The landscape of the Square will have inviting walkways that will connect pedestrians with the university, the downtown area, and nature trails bringing citizens and visitors together while generating exciting walking experiences. Also it will show the balance between old and new, historical and contemporary, public and private, citizens and visitors. The downtown economy currently depends on bars and restaurants. These places are not doing financially well because they are losing their customers. There were once many law offices in a radius of nine blocks because of the courthouse, this courthouse has since relocated, and the attorneys are following them. With the goal of revitalizing the civic center, as a starting point of this project, careful considering will be focused on both redesigning of the nine blocks that now remain vacant and the Town Square.

From my perspective, the concept of sustainability and community is the notion of people, “living together” in a community working and enjoy-ing their lives without affecting or influencing other elements on the earth and future generations. Sustainability will not be realized without collabo-ration in various fields, including economic, social, and environmental. This is because it is not only about saving the ecosystem on the earth, but also about propagating the notion of sustainability in human society and in the business field. Without successfully maintaining these entities, sustainability loses its meaning. Also, the concept of “community” must be considered in relative terms in order to increase the quality of “living together”.
What is the community? We know that communities collectively hold issues, interests or concerns, and they share information among the group. It is not just about geogra-phy, as there are more issues at hand. There also currently exist various kinds of global communities. For instance, several island countries are in danger of disappearing under water; because it is not possible for one country or organization to control sea level. The desertification in China is not simply a problem for that single country; this phenomenon will negatively influence other countries and future generations. Also current social and economic issues, including wars and starvation pose global threats as well. Architec-ture must address these issues or to at least provide forums for dealing with the various problems of each community to discuss these pressing topics.

Evolo Competition - Summer StudioThis project is based on a hypothesis of global warming. Global warming since last century, in 2099, causes the Earth to become water globe. All kinds of ice, ice-bergs and glaciers are melted. There is no land for human beings under the Sum due to the high temperature and UV-Rays so those water scrapers are coming up. When all glaciers are melted, sea level increases around 60 to 80 meters (200ft to 267ft). Permafrost under the crust melts and this results in subsidence of ground. In other words, there’s no more land to build stable structure for human shelter. Also Ozone layer filtering intensive UV-Ray in the air does not exist anymore and it makes too harsh environment to live on the islanded mountains under the Sum. Seeking a place to keep from harmful rays and subsidizing land, underwater city has been designed. More stable temperature range also follows. Of course, some issues are coming up: air, drinking water, food, energy generation, transportation and infrastructure, and structure stability and safety.

The intention of the design is to express the site itself, downtown, Austin. The south-ern facade shows downtown grids and the north part of the apartment shows a cor-ridor which flows to Lady Bird Lake. Also the community center and roof top garden is an area to refresh or relax like river parks. Shoal creek valley is imprinted on the first and second floor of the retail space in this building. Giving another vista (vision) for the future, private space and semi-private space are connected for cooperative housing. For better and more creative life style, this community center provides several re-education programs such as cooking classes, hair and nail design classes, computer labs, etc. Also, the products resulting from the classes of the re-education programs are on sale on the first floor, the commercial space, in this building. The downtown workers and residents can use the local com-munity center and purchase food or services for a lower cost. In addition, the building has also a beautiful open area that offers people a place to relieve stress and chat with friends. The re-education programs and the gym are also open for public use. Downtown workers can use this center during lunch time or before and after the work. It will make their life more enjoyable and improve their life style.

Downtown Program

The site of this building is located in the east end of the downtown area on 4th street in Austin, TX. It is adjacent to I-35 highway and Waller creek. Also there is The Austin Convention Center, lots of hotels, bars, and cafes. This is a busy area and an extremely popular place as well. Many joggers and bikers access Waller Creek during the morning, travelers and business people are bustling about in the area. In addition, it is a major transportation point which has the metro rail, bus stops, I-35, a bike route and parking buildings. The concept of the Austin urban playground is to connect a cool place with a hectic and busy downtown area. This Playground provides enter-tainment places and a local market. In this location, people can relax from the urban stress and enjoy the advantages of downtown living. Bringing Waller Creek to the amphitheater of this architecture is an attempt to harmonize among the adjacent ge-ometry and environments. Overall programs are composed of 3 parts; entertainment, support, private places. Entertainment places include Waller Amphitheater, the local farmers market, the outdoor park and playgrounds, climbing walls and a cafe. The support part has acting classes, studios and a prep area for actors and actresses. Also equipment for climbing, jogging, biking are for rent and/or sale is part of the indoor market. Private places are general services places, offices and small meeting rooms. All these programs are mixed with indoor/ outdoor places and these are connected with indoor and outdoor circulation, so that users cannot recognize they are inside or outside.

Everything, which exists, makes its own marks, and these marks show originali-ty. In this project, by studying skid marks, I tried to see the rhythm of individuals and objects. By studying various kinds of materials and expressions, I learned the rhythm of objects. Through this process, I saw that individuals have their own pace. Some starts slowly and some rapidly. This project ultimately shows the rhythm of individuals.

The concept of this project is to recognize our environment. Displaying polar bears on a stream in the temperate zone, we would like to explain that the glacier area is getting smaller, and there is nowhere for the bears to live. Therefore we need to look after our environment in order to keep polar bears’ in their local habitat.
