editor’s noteSpring fever is in the air and weare glad to welcome some newsupporters to the RMR PorscheNews, Fuller Properties, RedlineCoffee and National HumaneSociety. As with all ournewsletter supporters, pleaseshow your support of these

businesses when the need arises.

Though the calendar says it is spring, the snows ofwinter continued in April and two of the events, theAutocross and the Rally had to make the best of theweather. We wouldn’t have it any other way. Aftera long winter waiting to get the car on the road, gath-ering with friends and dusting off the driving skills, everyone made the best of the situation.

There are several events coming up in the nextmonth. Be sure you have renewed your RMR mem-bership so you will get the last minute emails re-garding any changes in events due to weather.

The April DE at HPR filled fast. Signing up early isthe best way to ensure you will be included in theevent. Watch for articles in the newsletter and emailsannouncing the opening of registration for each event..

By the time you read this, we will have completed ourfirst event at High Plains Raceway! The first eventwas a sell out with a waiting list! We’re very sorrywe could not accommodate all the people whowanted to participate. The Board will be carefullyreviewing all aspects of this first event to gaugewhether we can safely and efficiently increase themaximum number of participants at HPR track eventsin the future. In the meantime, please be sure to reg-ister early for all events! Watch the web site andnewsletter for details on events and for the openingof registration at www.rmrporscheclub.com. Forthose who were not able to participate, don’t fret, there are 5 more track weekend events this year atHPR and more at Pueblo and La Junta hosted by ourfriends and neighbors at the Alpine Mountain Region(AMR)! Details on ALL events will be available on theRMR website.

More good news! Thanks to the efforts of manymembers both Club Racers and non-Club Racers, anew Club Race Committee has been formed and isheaded by our own Rick Goncalves. The committeeasked all members to dig deep for sponsorshipmoney, goods and donations, and racer commitmentsto come, pay the entry fee and participate. The callwas answered and the committee presented a newplan and budget to the Board at the Board meetingApril 6th. The new plan was unanimously approvedby the Board and the race is on! Registration for ClubRacers and DE drivers will open soon for the First EverClub Race at HPR! The format will be a Super DE for-mat with Club Races interleaved with DE sessions allweekend. More details will be in the newsletter andon the web site soon! Show your support for this in-credible event by registering early! The DE sessionswill be limited to intermediate and advanced drivers

only as there will be no instructors available and theevent will almost certainly sell out so watch for reg-istration to open and get in promptly! The Super DEformat gives Club racers and DE drivers the opportu-nity to visit with one another and learn from eachother. Plus, between DE sessions you can volunteerto work a corner! There is no better way to learn thebest 30 ways through a corner than to watch 30 Clubracers do it almost simultaneously! AND what aSHOW! The best seats in the house go to the Cor-ner workers at the Club Race. Contact Joe Warren([email protected]) if you want to work a cor-ner!

See you at an event soon!

RRMMRR PPaarraaddee EEdduuccaattiioonnaall PPrroocceedduurreess

There are distinct differences in National Parade pro-cedure and Regional Event procedures. I have beenasked by a few members to make clear these differ-ences. For those of you who have registered for Pa-rade and for those who have not, but want to comeand visit the site for a day, let me explain the basic dif-ferences.

When you are asked to register for a Regional eventyou may choose to do so early, or perhaps you mayjust show up the day of the event and get your carSafety Tech Inspected, pay the extra money, anddrive. Some potential event entrants decide, if theweather is good that morning that they will showtheir car in the Concours d’Elegance, or enter an Au-tocross. Most regional event chairs, not wanting todisappoint you, will make allowances and let you dojust that if it is not a limited entry event. This is notan option for the National Porsche Parade.

The first difference is that you must take the time andmake the effort to register for Parade atwww.pca.org before June 15th. Parade Registra-tion is a must if you want to compete or have accessto all the fun and exciting events, special parties, din-ners, tours, Hospitality, etc. that Porsche Parade hasto offer.

Then, on Monday, June 29th we are all required togo through Parade Check-in at the Keystone Confer-ence Center. This is a must, even though you mayhave chosen only to sign up for the Parade Autocrosson Thursday and you didn’t plan to go to Keystoneuntil Thursday. Or, you think you can drive to

Keystone on Tuesday morning in your car and displayit in the Concours Corral. Wrong – you must gothrough the primary Parade check-in process on Mon-day no matter what events you are registered for.Kathleen Lennon, Parade registrar, will be accommo-dating a few late check-ins, for a couple of hours only,on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Please checkthe Parade website (www.porscheparade2009.com)under “registration” for exact times.

Each of the Parade event chairs will have their ownrules and restrictions which all entrants should read, follow, and respect. This is what will help to make ourPorsche Parade in Colorado orderly and successful. Icannot say this enough, please check our Parade web-site for updated event changes and details. This willbe your line of communication concerning all Paradeactivities, so check it often!

Many who do not plan to register for Parade haveasked about just coming to Keystone to view the Con-cours at the Keystone Ranch Golf Course. If you planon only visiting the Parade for that particular eventand are not a registered Parade entrant, here aresome suggestions. Due to the narrow road to thegolf course and lack of parking, NO one (registeredParade entrants or not) will be allowed to drive theircars to the Concours site. You will be turned aroundif you try to do this. What I suggest is that you parkyour car somewhere near the Conference Center justoff Hwy 6 and ride the shuttle bus to and from theConcours site. If you don’t have a Parade namebadge, your PCA membership card will do the trick forthe shuttle bus driver. It will also work if you want

This spring's TSD rally was held on April 11, starting at Rosie's Diner in Monument,Colorado. As we enjoyed our breakfast that morning, Mother Nature reminded usthat it was still "springtime in the Rockies" by blanketing our cars with a quarterinch of snow. Fortunately, the snow didn't last long, leaving the rallyists with safe(if a little windy) driving conditions.

The rally instructions led navigators and their drivers around Monument before turn-ing north toward Palmer Lake, Larkspur and finally Castle Rock, mostly along thebeautifully scenic highway 105. While a few "traps" kept the partipants on theirtoes along the way, the rallymasters' best efforts didn't prevent some teams fromturning in some rather impressive scores. Many teams also participated in the "gim-mick" portion of the rally, in which they had to answer questions about various sightsthey would encounter along the way.

The route ultimately brought us to Duke's Steakhouse in Castle Rock, where a finelunch awaited. Unfortunately, the rally results were awaited as well. As this rallywas intended to serve as practice for the Parade Rally this summer, we used re-vised scoring procedures, including a new spreadsheet for calculating scores.

Due to a hiccup in the process, we regrettably were not able to tabulate final scoresin a reasonable amount of time. Participants eventually went home not knowingtheir standings. (On a positive note, the experience has left us better prepared forthe Parade Rally!)

The overall TSD rally winners were the driver/navigator team of Jason Baldwin andStacy Briles, with an impressive score of 165--a total error of less than two min-utes! Equally impressive was the perfect score achieved in the gimmick portion byBruce and Lisa Stover. In addition to Challenge Series points, winners were awardedvarious prizes, including Porsche-branded merchandise provided at a substantialdiscount by Stevinson Imports of Littleton.

Overall, nearly 70 people participated, including drivers, navigators, checkpointworkers and other volunteers. It would be impossible to put on such an event with-out the assistance of numerous volunteers, and their help in making the rally an en-joyable experience is greatly appreciated!

Prepare for the revival of an RMR tradition! Each year the day following the Ladies’ Day DE, the re-gion President would ‘host’ a “No Times” DE so the rest of us can join the Ladies to run the track allday! Since Susan didn’t get the ‘opportunity’ to host one of these events the two of us are resurrectingthe tradition. So get ready to run with the Ladies at the President’s Day DE at High Plains Raceway.

One Redline You Won’t Back Down FromHave you ever rolled into an early morning event craving a hot and tasty cup of coffee, only tobe shocked into a wide eyed stance by the bitter sludge that was in the cup? Joe Bank, thefounder of Redline Coffee had one too many of these experiences and decided that motor en-thusiasts needed a brand of coffee that was smooth and flavorful, one that would match thequality of the machines in its midst. Late last year, Joe launched the Redline brand from Boul-der, CO and its taken off like a GT2 at Le Mans. As a matter of fact, Redline is an official spon-sor of Flying Lizard Motorsports and their GT3 RSR Porsche.

Before Joe combined his passion for coffee and motorsports, he dabbled in both. Wearing driv-ing shoes to his corporate job kept him grounded while reminding him of the open road that wasoutside his window. Now he owns a Flying Lizard racing suit and gets to the track much moreoften, fueled by his own brand of coffee.

The brand is steeped in motorsports terminology from the names of the coffee; Open Throttle,Double Clutch, Apex to the logo of the tachometer on its side so redline is at high noon. It goeseven further. The coffee is engineered for premium tastes using 100% organic beans, mediumroasted for a smooth flavor natural caffeinated or decaf varieties. Whether you are at the trackor another car event or just starting off another day, Joe believes “you will feel connected tothe passion of motorsports through the coffee”.

Just like our cars, you can’t get this coffee just anywhere. You can find the exclusive ParadeRoast at Porsche Parade in the goodies store in July or visit www.redlinecoffee.com to try outthe other blends. Redline offers both a Club (which automatically delivers to your home) or Onetime 2 bag purchase options. Joe is offering a deal just for the RMR members for May. Enterthe promotion code RMR when ordering to get 15% off a one time 2 bag order. Now it’s offto the races, fueled by Redline Coffee.

He started the driving seminar with a quote from Albert Einstein. “A sure sign of insanity is doingthe same thing over and over again and expecting something to change.” I hadn’t considered Ein-stein a driving instructor before, but I’d consider it now.

The speaker was Ross Bentley, the graying, fiftyish, concise, cropped, and fit driving coach, lecturerand author of the seven volumes of SSppeeeedd SSeeccrreettss. A handful of RMR and AMR PCA instructorsjoined over 100 NASA and BMW drivers and instructors for two days of speed secrets from Rossat the Lemay Museum and Club Auto Colorado facility in Denver in March. The seminar was spon-sored by the Denver BMW club. I went expecting the usual “brake in a straight line, turn in, trackout” formula that is the litany of so many how-to performance driving books. What Ross providedus, however, was a full shift in thinking from coordinated physical skills to conscious mental disci-plines.

“Your best on-track session is the one that is 100% consistent. Your goal is to improve to a new100%. You cannot achieve that by trying to drive faster. That will not work. You must make achange. You must develop new strategies. We are here to talk about those strategies. I call themSpeed Secrets.”

Ross does not provide written materials. He wants you to listen. No, he insists that you listen. After he began to reveal his secrets, most of those attending put pen to paper and took notes. Rossdid not talk about turn in or apex or track out. He talked about the mental game of performancedriving and its role in being safe and fast.

Ross brings depth to his game. Besides being an accomplished competitive driver in nearly everyauto racing venue, he is a student of sports psychology, kinesiology, neuroscience, sports coachingand adult learning strategies. He integrates his learning and experience into a mosaic he calls “themental game of performance driving.” He promises to increases your concentration, improve yourstate of mind and build your confidence – all that with a money-back guarantee and lunch included. He urges every attendee to “make a change – make a new strategy rather than repeating the oldones.” As Einstein suggests, stop the insanity.

11.. MMiissttaakkeess ddoonn’’tt ccaauussee aa ccrraasshh.. The crash is the effect of something else and like the layers of anonion; the root cause lies deep inside. To understand your driving you have to peel back the layersof the onion. For example, the crash was caused by a mistake. The mistake was caused by a lossof focus. The loss of focus was caused by fatigue. The fatigue was caused by…well, you get theidea. To improve, you must identify the root causes. Most likely, your car did not cause the prob-lem. You did. Know your car, but know yourself first.

22.. WWee aallll lloossee ffooccuuss.. We all know that loss of focus can be catastrophic. So how do you not losefocus? You don’t. You train yourself to get it back in an instant. Ross suggests using a device – areboot - a preplanned thought - that in a single word reminds us to refocus. Say the word and, bytraining the subconscious like a computer, the mind returns to the zone of singular, effortless, flow-ing focus. Practice it. The preplanned word = instant refocus.

33.. VViissiioonn == ssmmooootthhnneessss == bbaallaannccee == ttrraaccttiioonn == ssppeeeedd.. TThe key to tuning your driving is in theeyes. Train yourself to control your eyes. For example, where do you look going down a longstraight headed into a decreasing radius turn? (Turn 1 – Pueblo). On your left, braking markers areflashing by – 300 – 200 – 100 – 50. Are they telling you where to brake? Are you looking at themarkers? Do your eyes tell your foot, “Look for the 50 marker, then hit the brakes”? Wrong. Youreyes should be focused on where you want to be completely slowed. If you trail brake, focus onwhere you finish the trail braking – not where you start your braking. Your brain will figure thatpart out, just like it does every day with stop signs on the highway.

44.. WWee aallll hhaavvee aa nneeww ttrraacckk ttoo lleeaarrnn:: HHiigghh PPllaaiinnss RRaacceewwaayy.. Some drivers will go out, driveat 6/10 until the track line is imprinted and be satisfied they are ready to step up to 9/10to see who they can beat.

a. First, learn the line so you don’t have to think about itb. Then, focus on the corner exits only. The most important corner is the faster

one leading onto a straightaway. (Paradigm shift!)c. Then, focus on the corner entries onlyd. Then, focus on mid-corner momentume. Then, tweak the linef. Then, raise the corner entry speed with a lighter brake pedalg. Then, focus on getting on the throttle earlier

He suggests intentional, conscious, focused practice on each element individually – d o n ’ ttry putting it all together until you get to the end of the list – a through g.

55.. TThhee kkeeyy ttoo bbeeiinngg ffaasstt iiss tthhee ttiimmiinngg aanndd tthhee rraattee ooff rreelleeaassee ooff tthhee bbrraakkee.. The wrong way to in-crease corner entry speed is to move the braking point up – to shorten it – to brake later. Not onlydoes it scare the living bee-whidgets out of you, it doesn’t work. You now have more speed intothe turn and less time to take it off. The correct way to increase corner entry speed is to lightenyour pedal pressure and look to the end of the braking zone. Brake in the same place – the placeyour brain says, “Hey, hit the brake!” But try just a touch lighter pressure. Just a bit. Try trail brak-ing more. Just a bit. Longer on the pedal into the turn but with less pressure. Holding the brake longerinto the turn will rotate the car more and give you an earlier acceleration point because you are nowpointed down the track, not pushing to the outside edge of the track.

Performance driving is a lifetime sport and requires a lifetime of learning. It begins with rudimen-tary coordinated motions and progresses to advanced physical skills. But Ross advocates that therole of the mind, particularly disciplined consciousness, is both integral and critical to improving, achieving success and having fun.

The Gospel according to Ross suggests that when we return to being students of our sport, to con-sciously focus and train specifically, intentionally and deliberately, we will perform in a more effortless, confident and flowing way. “The slower you move, the faster the car moves.”

Ideally, the driver wants to brake firmly and feel good traction when entering a corner. Then, apply the throttle and feel the car take a “set” which allows the car to acceleratefully when exiting the turn.

I hope some of these ideas will help some of you when confronted with learning a newtrack or just remembering an old track!

iinntthheezzoonnee ......After the flurry of activity that Feb-ruary was for a new Zone Rep,March was a time for getting one’sfeet back on the ground. No junketsoff to exotic locales or rubbingshoulders with big-wigs, just get-ting down to looking through rule-books, getting acquainted withforms, and getting things set up fora busy summer ahead. I could takesolace that Zone 9 wasn’t alreadyin the thick of activity in the sameway that Zone 12 is in Florida. TheZone Rep from that region is re-

sponsible for PCA Car corrals at both Sebring and Daytona enduranceevents, not to mention that she has 15 regions that are within (relative tothe Southwest) easy driving distance. She says that she often visits four dif-ferent regional activities in ONE weekend! Certainly a double-edged sword:it’s a huge time commitment, but also a lot of fun. Don’t we wish that wehad a Daytona and a Sebring in our Zone!

Nonetheless, the ground is warming in Zone 9 and the buzz of activity is inthe air. As many of you know, High Plains Raceway is open for business, adding to a nice array of useable tracks for the Colorado Regions. Miller Mo-torsports Park in Utah will be hosting the American Le Mans Series in May.Several regions have already had autocrosses (the Roadrunner Regionbarely stops for the Holidays!) and the first DE’s are coming up soon forRMR, AMR, IMR, and the Carrera Region. With the advent of springweather, several driving tours will be going out and there are more andmore social events happening in the Zone.

As I write this report, I’m packing my bags to for a drive to Denver for twoPCA meetings. The Parade Committee meeting will be held on April 18 atthe Hyatt Regency Tech Center location. The PCA Executive Committee willbe flying in for the occasion. That evening there will be a social/mixer forthe locals and the national officers to meet and greet. I’m very much look-ing forward to that mixer, since it will be the first time that I’ll be meetingsome of the members of Regions from outside of my own in my new ca-pacity as Zone Rep. The following day, the EC will be having its springmeeting. As hosting Zone Rep, I’m responsible for taking minutes for thatmeeting. Then, if the weather is cooperative, I’m hoping to travel throughKeystone to check out some of the venues. While it’s certainly not on theeasy route home, I did live in Colorado for 30 years and I just want to seesome of my old haunts again on the way home.

Sean Cridland, RMR-PCA Zone 9 Representative

I’ll be home for just long enough to catch up on some work, then it’s off tothe other end of the Zone for another event. The West Texas Region hasbeen working closely with the RUF dealership in Dallas to bring some oftheir cars to Lubbock for a show of the cars and their capabilities. It’s a tra-ditional event for WTR and perhaps their biggest event of the year, so I’llbe making an appearance there as a Zone dignitary and to meet more ofthe members of our large and geographically diverse Zone (and to seesome of the great RUF cars!). Then it’s back home for awhile.

As some of you may already know, I’ve been busy this winter putting a roll-cage in my car. So I need to finish up that project and get the car drivableagain. Though it’s a big step that many Porsche-owners agonize over, I de-cided to do it for a couple of reasons. One, I’m planning some suspensionupgrades and I wanted to make sure I had a solid chassis foundation be-fore doing so. There’s no use putting stiff suspension on a soft car. Secondly, some of the events I’ve been doing have been what I would call “sustainedhigh speed” events. I’ve already been using a harness bar and a neck-col-lar, but it occurred to me that being on the safer side is always a better op-tion. And that brings me to a segue for this column.

Just become I’m doing it, don’t think that I’m one of those people who thinkthat everyone should be doing what I’m doing. Just because I’m putting ina cage, I don’t expect that everyone should run out and do the same thing. However, with all the activity that the summer months will bring, I amhoping that safety will be on everyone’s mind. Whether your adding extrahardware to your car, buying a new helmet and HANS or just being moreconscious about your, your family’s, and your friends’ safety during thetours and social events, it should be a topic on everyone’s mind as we getready to embark on a summer of fun events.

So, as the safety talks for the autocrosses, DE’s, tours, and tech sessionsare given, let’s all keep our ears and eyes open for one another and be surethat at the end of the year we’re all just as happy and safe as we are justbefore the season gets started. It’s part of what we do.

I look forward to seeing each of you at some event this summer.

I think I’ve discovered the ultimate drool-a-thon for the discerning car nut. No,it’s not wandering around the parking lot of Casino Square in Monaco. Andit’s not strolling down the 18th fairway at Pebble in mid-August. Nor is it at-tending Jay Leno’s annual car cavalcade on Rodeo Drive every Father’s Day.It’s not even in the real world.

I’m talking about StumbleUpon. It’s a free web portal that comes along, without asking, if you dial up Mozilla Firefox as your web browser of choice. The tagline is “Discover your web,“ and it does just that. The way it worksis that it gives you all these categories -- channels in StumbleUpon-speak --like news, sports, travel and so forth. When you click on a channel, you goto a site that’s chosen randomly, and falls under that respective category. And, you guessed it, there’s one for “cars.”

I tried it. Several hours later I had to be dragged away by my dog who hada vice grip on my tattered sleeve and was ready to piddle all over my key-board if didn’t take him out for a walk… or was it was my wife, who had ameat cleaver in one hand and the middle finger of her other hand poisedover my computer’s “escape” button… just kidding, I do have a wife, but Idon‘t have a dog. But I did lose track of time… and place… and memory….How I conjured up the mental acquity to chronicle the first ten hits that I“Stumbled” on, I‘ll never know. But here they are. Remember, you’ll onlyduplicate these if you follow my site visits in order. Let the computer decideand who knows where the Internet will take you. Don’t trip over, stumbleon!

1. A photo of a 2005 Ford Shelby GR-1 concept, all in unpainted aluminum. With no write-up and no explanation for why it‘s there. Hmmm. I guess thatsums up why I’ve never been into Mustangs.

2. A site listing the “top 50 fastest cars” in the world… all road cars, com-piled by WhoArtNow, whoever Art is. The site asks you to take a lookthrough the list to see where your favorite Hyper-cars score. So I did. Atno. 50 was a Porsche 911 C4S, at 185 MPH. No. 49 was an Audi R8, at187 MPH. No. 40 was a 911 Turbo at 193 MPH. No. 25 was a 911 GT2at 204 MPH. No. 17 was a Carrera GT at 209 MPH. No. 2 was a 9ff GT9at 254 MPH. For what it‘s worth, the winner was the Shelby Super Cars(SSC) Ultimate Aero, which is supposed to reach 257 MPH via 1,287 bhp.Now I’ve confirmed that I don’t like Mustangs.

By the way, this guy “Art” also has a link to the “10 most popular Porsches.”I did go there, but that was cheating, because StumbleUpon did not directme directly.

3. Jeff Lilly Restorations, Ltd. and his work restoring an early ‘70s Camaro.Nice job. They perform “the highest quality workmanship.” But I really did-n’t care… even if they did Mustangs.

4. Carzi.com. “Here at carzi, we don’t simply report on the latest automo-bile news like all the others in our industry, we take the cool news that is hap-pening now and add some depth to it to further educate you the reader!”They feature a photo of the Mansory Bugatti Veyron Vincero, whose claimto fame seems to be all-carbon fiber body panels with chrome accents, shotat the Mall of the Emirates in Dubai.

5. Shawn Crosby’s “H-wing.” This contraption can only exist on the LeftCoast; a Honda Prelude with Star Wars memorabilia super-glued and vel-croed everywhere. His CA license plates read OBISHWN.

6. Millionface.com. It looks like another “aggregation of everything” site, butI stumble to a photo montage, in their “cars” section, of the most outrageousstretch limos ever assembled. Take, for example, what appears to be astretch Clenet, as well as a stretch Corvette, with gullwing doors midwaydown the passenger section. I hit the “cars” button again, quickly

7. RSports Cars, where you “find cool sports car pictures and specs on fastcars. Learn the top speed of your favorite fast car, download cool car wall-papers and read about hot…“ I’m staring at a cutaway drawing of a BugattiVeyron . And a banner ad for Las Vegas Limo Reservations. Maybe some ofthese sites should get into mergers and acquisitions work.

8. Gridlock. My screen is filled with an aerial photo of an urban locale whereall the cars are, well, gridlocked. That’s nice.

9. Jalopnik.com, which offers up “daily automobile news and gossip forthose obsessed with the cult of cars.” Today‘s table of contents features, under LOLCARS, “Dallas Mercedes Driver Parks in Wet Concrete,” with photo.Under Question of the Day, viewers are asked “What’s the best looking crapcar?” Under Daily DUI, “Ohio Man Ticketed for DUI on Motorized Barstool.”And under Carpocalypse, “’Maximum Bob’ Lutz Channels Vulcans on Volt.”

10. On Thethinkingblog.com, the author, whose name I couldn’t find, says“it is where I write about things I like, find useful, and ONLY stuff I feel isworth sharing. Here is where you can find the crem-de-la-crem (sp).” Iguess so, because I’m staring at a story on the “11 cool concept cars thatshould be massed produced.” I’ll cut to the chase; number one is the GMCDenali XT concept. Think it would have saved Rick Wagoner’s job? There’splenty of room for comments below the article.

The beauty of StumbleUpon is that, if I did it all over again, I’d go to, well, just a minute, let’s see, if I click on the icon, I’ll be redirected to, yes, it ap-pears to be a Webroot-verified safe site, with Wikipedia definitions and plentyof room for comments, along with discussion tabs…. What’s that, dear? No, I’m not ready for dinner. Why don’t you just take the dog for a walk.I’ll be there in a minute or two.
