HEY MEMBERS!Our events are wrapping up for the year (no pun

intended!). Over the last two months of this year we have our November monthly social, the Breakfast Club, the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Charity Drive, and the Holiday Party! While events have slowed down, this is the time to start planning future events. If you are interested in being a volunteer, let your voice be heard. You can choose to volunteer a little or a lot! Also, keep your eyes open for emails for specific positions. Remember, this club is about the people, not just the cars, and we need more people to volunteer as our region continues to grow. Speaking of which, I will be looking for an assistant Membership Chair to assist with regular membership duties with eventually taking over the position of Membership Chair on the Board of Directors. I will be sending out an email in the near future, but if you are interested now, don’t wait, contact me today! Qualifications: friendly, willing to help (even though you may not have the answer), and would prefer the ability to attend many events. Also, keep in mind next year is RMR’s 60th Anniversary. There will be a few extra special events happening to commemorate this special year. It will be an exciting year next year!

A lso, I want to point out that we wil l now be highlighting our test drive members. These members are very interested in our club and the wonderful cars we drive, although they may not own a Porsche of their own just yet. You could be that insight they need to help them find their Porsche! All members, please don’t shy away from talking to new members! It is the membership that keeps members together. It is everyone’s duty to include everyone that share the same interest as we do, our love of everything Porsche! You never know, you could be the person that makes a lasting impression about our club. And you may just meet someone new that turns into a forever friend!

ANOTHER DRIVING SEASON IS IN THE BOOKS AND I THINK WE FINISHED UP QUITE NICELY.

The 4 x 4 tour was a lot of fun. The route took us up to Georgia pass on top of the Continental Divide. Fourteen Cayennes and Macans participated. Four cars continued into Breckenridge while the rest of us came back the way we came and stopped for lunch in Bailey. Thanks to Holly Jackson for a great event. This is the first opportunity I have had with my 2014 Cayenne to take it off road! Very Cool!

We had great attendance at the OktoberFAST Driver’s Ed event on the 7th and 8th. A total of 140 drivers took to the track for our last DE. Weather was great. Thanks to chairs Jim Thornburn and Tom Radow for a great event. It appears that with the success of the Driver’s Ed program this year and the rest of our events, we will meet our goal of a slight profit for the year.

O n O c t o b e r 14 t h E r i c k Behrendsen held the last tour of the season, another fun Edelweiss tour. The weather was terrif ic and 50+

cars with 99 participants turned out, including 15 fist timers! Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Thanks to Erik for organizing another great tour.

On October 21st David and Jodi Schmidt put on The Great Pumpkin Rally. They had twenty cars participate. It looks like many got into the Halloween Spirit for the event by coming in costume. Congratulations to Scott and Amy Rogers who were the rally winners and thanks to David and Jodi for another great rally.

Our last driving event of the season is the Cones are a Fallin’ Autocross on October 28th at Front Range Airport. Sixty drivers are signed up so far. Chris Sully is putting together this event which will benefit Project Angel Heart, a charity which addresses the major challenges facing Coloradans living with a life-threatening il lness—getting the nutrition they need to get stronger and remain independent in

their homes. He is organizing a cereal drive and the goal is to top last year’s grand total of 512 boxes of cereal.

The November Membership Social will be held at Automotive Imports in Denver. As a new sponsor this will be their first time hosting us. They have planned a great event for us. At this meeting we will hold the elections for next year’s board positions

Registration has recently opened December Holiday Party which will be held at the Willow Ridge Manor in Morrison. There is a link to register from our web site or you can go directly to motorsportreg.com and register there. Cost is $70 per person. The planning committee of Christine Walters, Jane Hebert and Carole Thero has been working on this for many months and it promises to be a great affair!

HAPPY 60TH BIRTHDAY BUDDY!Yep, 60 years ago in another

country, Germany, you were born. Two, three, and four years later my sons were born two of them in Germany. Other than your beginning we know litt le about your first 20 years and have several different accounts from Zuffenhausen and others. No matter, two of my sons have similar beginnings, with military and German birth certificates.

You came into my life in 1979 on one fateful day when, on a whim, I decided to take the “back road” thru Louisville, CO from Ft Collins to Grand Junction. Louisville had a water main break that made a 2 block by 2 block detour, there in the back yard along with 20 other 356’s including 2 more “D’s” you sat, guarded by a large Doberman. It took about 6 weeks for your then owner to call me and work out a deal, including convincing his wife to give you up.

I drove you to Hagastadt Porsche in Denver and after much gawking by all left you with “Hans”. He immediately left for Germany for a month. Upon his return, he called, “you did not have a clutch problem” but “no flywheel”. Obtaining a part from another car in Boulder, taking it to his friend’s machine shop in South Denver to retool, and replacing it he called and said “It’s done – pick it up”. Bob Hagastadt said my deal was with Hans not him. Hans even wanted to buy you. In any event Hans started your rebirth.

Bringing you back to Grand Junction and Ronnie at Fuco Cadillac and Al Johnsen AJRS you spent the next 18 months being restored.

After that wow! What a trip it’s been. Trips? A l l 48 contiguous

States, most of Canada and some of Mexico, monthly autocrosses for years, many track events including several RMVR, countless shows both d’Elegance and fun and so many parades with young ladies, Vets, Fire, Police and dignitaries astride your rear, ending up in several calendar shots . You’ve done it a l l, even enjoying tutoring two Huskies in the fine art of hanging on. And I, I’ve been along for the ride.

One of our first trips was Fiesta del Porsche in Santa Fe. We left Durango and half way to Pagosa Springs we hit a deer. You suffered your real f irst damage with me. We bent the windshield frame and top back into position, the right front fender, bumper, and overrides. Stopped in Pagosa Springs, bought a sheet of plastic and borrowed a hack saw to make a windshield. In Santa Fe we stopped at a body shop borrowed tools and with parts brought down by Bill Randall, Storz Garage in Denver put you back together. You even won the Concours, with bra on, Track event and rally. You started the “Deer Slayer Award” that lasted eons.

16 or so years ago a “Fine Lady - Carol” hopped in the driver seat and you showed her how to have fun. You taught her to Track, Autocross, Trail, Mountain, Tour a 356 and more. Thanks! You are a big part in making sure she spends her life with us.

My Friend, you’ve showed more stamina, courage and grace than most. At last count you have 875 000 miles on you while in my care, most of it off the Interstate. That’s 1 407 875 km where you come from.

Yep we’ve had some bumps like driving you from Memphis to the FOG event in Florida with your rear about a foot higher than your nose,

after a week long operation to replace ring and pinion bolts. Or the time we lost the wire connection on the coil and the “Hells Angles” stopped, gave Carol and Me a beer and some snacks, found and fixed the problem, and then followed us for 10 miles before returning to their own journey.

On one trip we were stopped on I 40 and by CB found we had a many day delay due to a mud slide. We scooted back along the barrow pit to an off ramp and went cross country to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee’s answer to Las Vegas. We hooked up with a Park Ranger who cleared the road

to the top of Celingmans Dome at 6643 ft and one fantastic 356 single car race. He left us at the top in the center of the Great Smokey Mountains. Wow!

How about the n ight at the “Admiral Bimbo” when the cops arrested the murderer wanted in 4 states next door. Or, maybe the crossings into Canada where you were admired by many Mounties and Border Guards. Or better the countless children at Track, Concours, Parades and Shows that drooled and pampered you. Why you even had a PCA Official feed his ice cream cone to your hood.

Then there was the time we hit a pavement rise and had you towed to Bend, OR where they put in the wrong clutch and only a seal was needed. You spent an entire week again being mis-handled. Remember the service man telling Carol “the

OFF ROAD CAYENNE AND MACAN TOUR We had our 2nd Off Road Tour on Saturday, September 30, 2017. We started the day with partly cloudy conditions from our sponsor, Stevinson Imports. A big thank you to Steve Burt and Lance Dickson of Stevinson Imports for not only providing their support and two run vehicles, but also their best mechanic, Chance Chenoweth! We had 24 adults, 3 kids, 4 dogs and 12 vehicles. At our first stop in Bailey, CO, we had just missed the Bailey Homecoming Parade. It was great to see the community support for the high school. The extra traffic slowed us down just a bit, however this allowed us to enjoy the changing fall colors on our way up to Georgia Pass outside the town of Jefferson, CO. As we drove the dirt road uphill through some aspen groves, the road started to look a little wet from the rain days earlier. We could also see fresh snow on the mountain tops above tree line.

We climbed up the dirt road and as we got to the top, you could see more rocks, puddles and areas of snow a couple inches deep. We parked at the top and took advantage of the photo ops! It’s pretty cool to have your picture taken in front of the plaque to designate the Continental Divide as well as our elevation of 11,585 feet above sea level (per the sign)! Some even took advantage of the snow to have a quick snowball fight! We had an unusual twist that was approved through PCA insurance; we were able to split into two groups. The super adventurous people were able to continue on the trail to go down the other side. This was a small group of 4 Cayennes and 11 people that wanted to tackle the rougher side of the mountain. They were led by Chance Chenoweth, an active off roader in his personal Cayenne (and Gold Tier mechanic at Stevinson Imports)! All made it safely down

to have lunch at the Dam Brewery in Dillon, CO. The rest of the group followed me back down the same path to the Rustic Station in Bailey, CO for some lunch. Unfortunately, the only wildlife viewed this trip were some pronghorn and then we had cattle and llamas. Maybe we will have better luck next year! The group we had also made a total donation of $190 to the Food Bank of the Rockies! These funds will be added to other funds already set aside for a donation of nearly $700. This will be used to feed a lot people! And thanks to everyone who joined me for this fall drive. Hopefully you didn’t have too much mud to wash off ! And thank you to our two sweeps, Dave Marshall and John Mackin!

dealer’s owner took his 356 to Salt Lake City for restoration”.

We remember the time in Idaho when the “Fram filter” exploded and the hotel help cleaned everything up. Also in New Orleans in the off street wonderful hotel that moved cars so you could reside in Luxury. Or sleeping in the snow is Steamboat Springs at 40 F below only to show off and start the next morning.

Remember the summer we did the 10,000 mile trek to the East Coast event in South Carolina then to the West Coast event in San Diego and back to Ft Collins. Rusty got the shock of his life when he jumped into the Gulf only to find out water wasn’t always “water”. Then he dried off in your lap. Or leaving Mesa AZ at 10 am and finding Yuma AZ at 120 F.

No doubt you remember leaving Ft Collins in the rain going east to snow, wind and hail then south to get to the Texas dooin’s. We had to change yet another clutch cable in a parking lot. You got another award, turned around and fought the snow for a couple of hundred miles to get back home.

Or last year going to the East Coast Holiday and crossing Lake Michigan on the ferry to Michigan, carefully parked by the crew in a special spot. On through Canada, the Ferry at Lake Champlain, Vermont, New Hampshire, parked at Concord, MA where it all started, New York City where at the Pennsylvania Hotel they had to find a special “Valet” to park you, and all the Taxis that gave you the right-of way and Special parking again in DC.

You led the Grand Junction PCA group to Santa Fe “Fiesta del Porsche” so many times, this year was our 26th trip, and while not the Fiesta but the Escape it counts just the same. Carol

and Kitka took care of you while I parked cars on the “Green”.

During all of this you have earned and won many accolades, trophies, articles and awards.

How about the time you added another trophy to your collection when Vic Elford awarded you and your guard Kitka a top flight award at the PCA Escape in Albuquerque. The Sheraton Hotel again even gave you VIP parking so all could watch you.

Then onto the Arizona Outlaw event and running the hills, valleys, curves, and narrows of Route 66 around Oatman, AZ where Clark Gable and Carol Lombard were married, in order to stay at La Posada the last Harvey Hotel built for the Santa Fe Railroad.

Carol and I were just reminiscing about the Arizona Outlaw event in Bagdad. Well Bagdad Arizona. The Town and Fire department held a great Bar-B-Que and the Sheriff was admiring you. He said in a loud voice whose car and who shot it. We decided it happened when passing thru Bailey, Colorado driving hear during hunting season.

You’ve been the subject of much review crossing the border into Canada the many times we did that. Two come to mind immediately. Going to the Vancouver B.C. event we spent quite a while discussing you with the Mounties and border Guards before going on to Whittier. After leaving the event we took the Queens Highway across Canada. One evening at a way stop we had a couple of bikers spend some time with us. One on a Harley in typical attire and the other on a Honda. It was cold but not for him. He plugged himself into the electrical system. Heated suit, helmet, gloves, boots and all. It took him about 20 minutes to get ready. His Harley Buddy said

“finally” and off they went. Again, in Mexico at Del Rio, Texas crossing and again at Great Bend National Park. We had to change your clutch cable again on the side of the road with a Park Ranger’s watchful eye.

Another eventful drive when we ended up is Acacia National Park and Bar Harbor where we lost the starter and ended up with Carol pushing You, Rusty the Husky and of course King while in a short skirt and Red heels.

Someone there took a picture got our license plate and sent a copy to us.

Perhaps of the more eventful times was in one of the Southern Bayous. Since most of our travels are non-interstate we put you on a barge to

“Pole” across the river. Maybe that was also the time you got parked inside the hotel canopy in the French Quarter and everyone on the street and hotel took your picture.

Remember the Steamboat twin events with PCA and fol low up with the Registry. Peter Porsche was signing event trophies in a large 5000 seat tent. He recognized Carol and Me, signed our trophies, stood up and told all present about the 58 Green Convertible D with over 750 000 miles at that time.

I particularly remember Carol’s

TRACK TALK Dan CarlsonLeader, Chief Driving Instructor Committee

THANKSGIVING IS UPON US, AND I AM SO THANKFUL! Why am I more thankful than ever? Let me take you for a ride...We just finished an amazing 2017 track and autocross season. Our goal was to reinvigorate all aspects of the Club’s

high performance driving program – MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!It took more than a village to live up to our “Raise the Bar” theme. I am so thankful to so many contributors

– registrars, grid, control, safety, instructors, the RMR Board, event chairs, equipment, CDIs, track management, HighGear and on and on. THANK YOU!

Here are just a few more of the reasons for me to be thankful:

• There was not one injured person unless, of course, you count some bruised egos. SAFETY FIRST!

• The “DE 101” seminar before the driving season was a well-attended huge hit and it led to several “first-timers” participation. Thanks Brian Leary and Scott Henderson!

• Like every year, Ladies Day was the best – thank you Event Chairs Vicki Cox-Jones and Lynda Love, plus Event Lead CDI Vicki Earnshaw, all of the volunteers, and attendees!

• Our autocrosses had record attendance! Chris Sulley had a big hand in this – thanks Chris!

• DE participation significantly increased.

• The German Cars/German Dogs DE was a combination of ground-break ing creat ive and generous thinking! Here’s a shout-out to Joe Bank! THANK YOU!

• I really need several paragraphs to thank our instructors - they exemplified our professional client-driven culture that was emphasized at our “Back to the Basics” Instructor Clinic. In particular, the CDI team was so impressed with the non-driving instructor (NDI) turn-out;

rather than track their own car, several instructors drove all of the way out to HPR to make sure that we had instructor coverage for all of our first-timers. Also, several instructors stepped-up to help out when needed, even when they weren’t asked. This is commitment and I’m so thankful - well done!

• Congratulations to our new instructors – some of you even shared that you enjoy instructing as much or more than driving! THANK YOU!

• Then there’s my fellow CDIs - what a dedicated team. The u l t i m ate g i ve r s . . . c r e a t i ve b i g thinkers, hardworking...committed... THANK YOU!

• Doug Bartlett, thanks for all of your behind-the-scenes efforts, particularly for implementing our new DrivingEvals.com student/instructor/event evaluation software.

• Not on ly were t he nov ic e classroom presentations updated and given new life, reemphasis was placed on developing the skills of our advanced drivers with hop-in instruction and their own daily classroom session. Thanks fellow CDIs!

• Our do-everything Equipment Chair, Mahlon Schanzenbach, is supposedly retiring (if we let him). Besides his tireless efforts, several have noticed how he makes it fun for the kids while their parents are driving or instructing. You’re the best and you’ll be missed - thank you Mahlon!

• La st but not lea st (and an attempt at some poor HPR insider humor), I am thankful every time the “High Plains Hilton” aka “The MoHo” sta r t s up, that the a i r conditioning works sometimes, that there are fewer mosquitos inside than outside, and that it doesn’t leak too badly!

Seriously, while there is so much more that we want to accomplish, it has been a tremendous year. All of you make my job as Lead-CDI that much more enjoyable and fulfilling. I’ve learned so much from all of you and have developed some of the best friendships. Thank you again, and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

RMR HOLIDAY PARTY DECEMBER 9, 2017

The 2017 RMR Holiday Party will be held at Willow Ridge Manor, 4903 Willow Springs Road, Morrison, Colorado, 80465. It is located near The Fort restaurant, off Highway 285 at the Morrison Road exit, to give you a frame of reference. The cost is $70 per person. In keeping with the holiday spirit and the ambiance of the venue, we request semi-formal attire (no jeans, please).

We have planned a fun evening including cocktails (cash bar) and appetizers including an antipasti and cheese board with cured meats from 5:30 to 6:30, followed by a scrumptious buffet dinner with your choice of Roast Beef from the carving station or Baked Haddock, salad, sides and dessert. A short program will follow with installation of 2018 Board of Directors and announcements.

There is plenty of FREE parking at the venue. If you live a bit away and don’t want to drive, there are several places to stay near Willow Ridge and you could use taxi or Uber to and from the venue.

If you miss the Toys for Tots drive earlier in the day (December 9) you can bring an unwrapped toy for a girl or boy to the Holiday Party. The Marines will distribute them to needy children prior to Christmas.

We hope to see you there! Sign on to MotorsportREG (https://www.motorsportreg.com/) search for ‘RMR Holiday Party 2017’ to save your spot.

Cheers,

Holiday Party CommitteeChristine Walters, Carole Thero, Jane Hebert

OKTOBERFAST–THE COMPLETION OF A FANTASTIC SEASON!OktoberFAST was a fantastic end to RMR’s DE season. The weather was perfect with clear autumn days and temperatures in the low 70’s. Our novice drivers were out in force getting that last event in before putting away the cars for the winter. “Mo” at HPR put on a great dinner of bratwursts and his

version of “German” Cajun potatoes. It was a well- attended event with everyone enjoying the best that RMR has to offer.

RMR’s DE season was especially successful this year. We could not put on these events without the dedicated volunteers that make up RMR’s autosports team. Everyone from

the Chief Driving Instructor Committee, our registrars, instructors, the Safety Committee, Grid, Control, Equipment, pre-tech and many others work tirelessly to make these events possible. RMR is proud to have such a dedicated and capable team. Thank you for your service!

EISKHANA IS BACK!Mark your calendars for Eiskhana –

January 21st at Georgetown Lake. This is our ice driving autocross. Bring your Porsche, or any other car or 4x4 for this fun-filled event. Details will be sent soon via e-blast.

first trip in you to Santa Fe leading 32 Porsches from Grand Junction. I turned you over to her in the pits and after three sets of runs you had her running in 2nd place for ladies. The first time she had ever driven a P Car. Yep you gave her a ride all right, even a 360 on the track, you rascal.

It’s hard to forget the long trip to the Last Shuttle Shot, reserved parking in a great restaurant’s lot, driving the many bridges and islands down to Key West, eating Tequila and Oysters while watching a local, rol l ing Cuban Tobacco Cigars. Or, our most recent 3200 milers to Carol’s 60th High School Reunion in Carlsbad, New Mexico driving on the Waco Texas, the No Man’s Land

panhandle, Oklahoma and back home to Colorado.

Perhaps one of your f irst duties after I got you was to haul a twelve-foot palm tree down First Street in Grand Junction, from Bookclif f Gardens and North Avenue to its new home at Western Reserve Life. You made the front Page of the Daily Sentinel

Perhaps one of the most nerve wracking trips was when I missed the turn on the Uncompahgre during hunting season. We had a fine dirt road providing dust that covered the whole car. Finding the road and around the corner, Carol said “there’s a f ire”. Yep a real live forest f ire. Driving on, one of the fire fighters said “Oh well, just drive on but stay in the middle, I’ll radio ahead. They

were doing a large control burn, 25 miles. As always, You made it with flying colors.

None o f u s o f c ou r s e w i l l ever forget your t wo t ravel ing companions, Rusty and Kitka. The two huskys that accompanied you over the years and miles, providing many stares, protection and several “careful, there’s a Wolf in there”. You may be on your 3rd rebuild but with 875 000 miles with us so far you’re still a champ and will be around for a long time. You deserve the best and I hope will always get it. I promise, Old Friend, I’ll do my best during my remaining time. Thanks for all 48 contiguous State Trips with most of Canada and some of Mexico added.

Happy Birthday, Buddy!

I GET AROUNDDanielle BadlerRMR/PCA Columnist

GIVING THANKSYes indeed. It’s November. Time

once again to gather with friends and give thanks. Give thanks for how we are blessed in life. In car life. In Porsche life.

I’ve compiled a Porsche list of thanks, which I plan to review with my friends and family at our annual Turkey Day. I know, I may be the only one around the table to understand the subtlety of my stories. But that’s ok. Because I’m also sharing them here, with you dear reader. I know, I just know, that if you’re within view of my words, you, at least, will understand. So here goes.

I’m thankful that I can still find reverse on my ’78 911SC. With the Momo gear shift knob, the knob that has no insignia on top, no shift pattern.

Once, at least a dozen years ago, I had my car serviced at a Porsche dealer. I had settled the account, and stood outside the shop, waiting for my car to be brought around. I waited. And waited. So I strolled up to the shop entrance. And saw a kid sitting in my car, with the engine idling. I walked up to the window and asked him what he was doing. He looked at me and asked, “where’s reverse?”

I said, “Get out.” No, he said, he’s supposed to wheel the cars to the customer pick-up area. I said, “sorry, if you don’t know where reverse is, not in my car” and opened the door for him. As he tried to find words to come back at me with, I slid in and backed out my baby … and drove away. I didn’t look back.

I’m thankful that I can still get a rise out of my co-pilot.

A few years ago, my friend Paige was riding shotgun as we hightailed it up to the Peak to Peak Highway, on our way to Estes Park, Co, for a mass P-brunch. I was third, in the SC, behind a Boxster S and a Carrera. Needless to say, I was working pretty hard to keep up the pace, but I was managing the switchbacks pretty well. We hit

a short chute, which gave me time to glance over at Paige. And I noticed that she appeared to have an alabaster complexion I hadn’t seen before. Just before the next hairpin, she barely got out the words “I don’t want to die today.”

I’m thankful I can still remember the first 911 I coveted.

That had to be ’68. It was maroon, black interior. Owned by the boyfriend of a friend’s older sister. Now, this was an interesting family. The sister drove an Alfa GTV. My friend had an Alfa Giulietta. I was newly ensconced in my first sports car, a ’64 Triumph TR-4. As I recall, the boyfriend told us he recently got the car, and just drove it nonstop, all the way from where we lived in Nassau County, Long Island, to Montauk and back, for the hell of it.

I’m thankful I’m still alive. There was the time, in the TR-4,

driving with a friend from New York to college in Ohio, on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, just after Thanksgiving, believe it or not. We were near Pittsburgh, leaving a rest stop, and it started snowing. Just enough that, as I got into third gear on the entrance ramp, we started sliding sideways, directly toward the center divider. I had the wheel cranked over, but that was doing nothing.

Just as I glanced out the left side window at two lanes of oncoming traffic, the tires finally bit, and the car snap-hooked into the left lane, with enough momentum that I could motor forward and accelerate properly. My friend and I didn’t speak for a good 10 minutes. Then we looked at each other. I barely intoned, “we almost died back there.” He nodded.

I’m thankful that I still remember the first race I attended.

I t w a s t h e C a n - A m , a t Bridgehampton, in ’68. Perhaps the pinnacle of the Bruce and Denny Show. I drove out in my TR-4. The pace car

was a 911 with “Politzei” plastered on the side panels, and a shaft rising from the rear bumper, with a blinking light attached on top. I just thought that was very cool, a real Porsche sports car as a police car, posing as a pace car.

I saw the car again, at the Porsche Parade in Hershey, PA in the early 2000s.

I’m thankful that I can tell the tale of overhearing Ron Dennis complain to the Porsche factory about the reliability of the TAG engines they were supplying to the McLaren team.

It was ’86, at the Hungaroring. The first ever F1 race behind the Iron Curtain. Which seemed to be such a curiosity that I felt like the entire racing community was there. I was working for a major sponsor of the McLaren team, which sort of gave me run of the pits and attendant team facilities. So, after a day of practice, I sauntered off to the motorhome, to get something to drink. I opened the door and … I heard him.

There was more, that weekend. Ferrari’s latest, the 288 GTO, sat, locked, at the entrance to the hotel. The entire weekend. Each afternoon, when the drivers came back from practice, they walked through the lobby … to applause. I had dinner with the team the night before the race. I watched Alain Prost with his wife … he drank no alcohol. They excused themselves early, and left dinner. I watched Dan Gurney … really … walk down pit lane, photographing rear suspensions with an Instamatic. There was one night, at the bar, I found myself sitting next to Clay Regazzoni, who was in his wheelchair. I asked him what was his favorite circuit. He said, “Spa.” I said to myself, perfect.

Which sort of sums it up for me. I hope you can sum it up for yourself, as well. And join me in giving thanks.

DRIVING EVENTSTOUR

A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with ra l lies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade.

which contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typica lly run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.

AUTOCROSS (AX)An autocross is a competition in which

drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade.

DRIVER EDUCATION (DE)A driver education event provides

a sa fe, control led environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driv ing skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.

CLUB RACEA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing

event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA Nat iona l) i s required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

R MR host s one c lub race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

NON-DRIVING EVENTSMEMBERSHIP SOCIAL

Membersh ip soc ia l s prov ide an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a membership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program varies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Challenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member!

TECH SESSIONA tech session is just what it sounds

like–a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself ” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually pre sented by exper ienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typica l ly in the “of f months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d’Elegance

A concours is essentially a car show, in which conte stant s endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.
