NEXT UP! You won’t want to miss lunch at 5 Chefs in Portland, Tennessee, the destination for the August 17th Club Drive

1

Even though the heat index was near 100 degrees, 36 shiny Porsches assembled on Saturday July 20 for a club drive. After our safety meeting in the parking lot adjacent to the Granite City restaurant, we traveled south on I-65 through Columbia to the Milky Way Farm in Giles County. This farm was established by the Mars (as in candy) family during the Depression. They purchased over 2,800 acres and built a stone mansion, stone barns, and stables that housed Thoroughbred horses and Hereford cattle. The working farm provided many residents of Giles County much needed jobs during that decade. Today the farm is privately owned by a Nashvillian and used for different private events. After visiting the mansion, we drove to the metropolis of Lynnville, Tennessee, population, approximately 400. There we had lunch at the Soda Pop Junction.

2

Did I mention, we had 59 people on the drive ?! After lunch, many went next door to visit Colonel Littleton's leather shop. They advertise that their products as "unrivaled leather goods hand crafted to showcase the natural beauty of American leather". I wouldn't be surprised if several Benjamin Franklins found a new home! I hope everyone enjoyed the outing. Our next drive is August 17 to Portland TN with lunch at Five Chef's. Be sure to check out our special feature this issue about the new 992. The exclusive article written by Chandler Clay of Porsche Nashville, who drove the 992 and loved it, makes you one of the first people to read a review of the car that puts you on the track. Also be sure to print out and send the registration form for the October 26th Pferde Rally on page 26 of this issue. We still have room for 5 more teams. It's not just the cars, It’s the people! Harald

Rustic meets racy. My ride shared curb space with this beautiful new GT3 owned by a first time drive member, whose name I didn’t get. It would be a head-turner in any location, not just in front of a white picket fence.

Above: The Milky Way mansion’s drive was lined with Musik-Stadt Porsches.

There is a question that comes with the arrival of each new generation of the 911. Is it a true 911? Is it still a sports car, or has it become a touring car? Does it still have the soul of a 911? The answer with the 992 is: Yes-- Absolutely Yes!

The 992 is the latest generation of the legendary Porsche 911 and is a new car from the ground up. I had the opportunity to experience the 992 in Salt Lake City in early July and walked away stunned. This car showcases the latest and greatest technology that Porsche has to offer while paying homage to its predecessors. Let me take you through the highlights of the design, engineering, and driving experience of the latest 911--The 992.

While designing the 992 the engineers used the original 911 Turbo, the 930, as their inspiration. The aggressive stance and wide hips are now standard on all models. There are a number of other classic design cues that have been added to the 992. The hood now has squared front edges where the 991 has a rounded front edge. This design can be seen in all of the air-cooled models, as well as the indentation running up the center of the hood.

Perfect? Perhaps. Irrational? Probably. The truth – like the engine – is in the middle. But in this case, this middle is not a compromise, it’s razor

sharp. The new 718 Cayman GT4 is the perfect sports car for those who take fun seriously.

The aerodynamics concept of the new 718 Cayman GT4 has been honed once more. Even the adaptive GT sports suspension has been redesigned to focus on driving pleasure: for extraordinary agility, a high degree of driving safety

and stable handling in the high-speed range.

On The Road Again (Here’s to the good

life!)

with Don Wirth

[email protected]

Information about our upcoming destination

! Portland started life as Richland Station, named for the railroad depot built to serve the new Louisville and Nashville RR that made its first stop in the settlement in 1859.

! Because there was another Richland on the line, the town was renamed Portland in 1888 and incorporated in 1905.

! In the early 1900s, the big industry in Portland was strawberries. A creating factory, fruit processing plant, canning factory, and a freezing facility, which produced strawberries for Breyer’s ice cream & other brands, made the agricultural community prosperous.

! At its peak, Portland shipped out 30 rail- road cars of strawberries a day during the season.

! Now, its annual Strawberry Festival hosts 30,000 people in the community of about 12,000. Next year’s date is May 9th, 2020

Grab a friend and consider this:

Portland holds an annual Farm to Table dinner on its main street. More information is available through the Chamber of Commerce. This year the event will be held August 24th from 7-10 PM.

Next Up: August 17th Drive to Portland, TN JOIN US for a scenic drive through Sumner and Robertson Counties ending in Portland, TN with lunch at the Five Chef’s. Their food and atmosphere will not disappoint. Started by (of course) five female chefs about 15 years ago, their downtown Victorian house has been turned into a quaint cafe providing classic sandwiches, soups & salads, plus desserts & gifts in a colorful space. They have wonderful cakes and a gift shop. We will meet next to the BP Station at 254 Long Hollow Pike in Goodlettsville just off I-65N exit 97. Park to left of BP Station in a former K-Mart parking lot, and help yourself to last minute gas, coffee and rest rooms. Take Note because this departure information differs from the norm: Drivers’ meeting at 9:15 am with 9:45 am departure. Drive is less than 1.5 hours; no stops until we arrive in Portland. Come out and enjoy the other side of Nashville. Factoid: Mike Moody lived in Goodlettsville from 2004-2008. ##

Marque Trivia

The 912

There was a good- looking rarity at our recent club drive, quietly waiting to join the second tour group. According to the 912 registry, this soft window Targa is likely one of approximately 100 survivors of the 912 Version 1.

Only about 1200 of the short wheelbase, soft window 912s

were made.

• Built to cushion the transition from the 356 to the newly introduced 911, the 912, later known for its reliability and great handling, was Porsche’s entry-level model. It came in coupe and Targa styles.

• Priced at $4,700, the 912, with its 4-cylinder engine, weighing just over 2000 lbs., initially outsold the 911 for several years. The 912 was also made in a special version for the German autobahn police.

• More than 32,000 912s were built between April 1965-July 1969

The 912 enjoyed a one -year return in sales with the introduction of the 912E. Porsche needed to fill the entry level position left open by the discontinued 914 and sent the 912E only to the United States from May 1975-July 1976. It was powered by the 914 derived VW “Type 4” flat 4 engine and was fuel injected. It averaged 30 mpg at a time when gas shortages were beginning to cause national attention. 2,092 coupes were built and imported to the US during this revival period.

With titles like ‘911 and the Tides, Wet Mode, Extraordinary, Hear the Wetness, and Unique’, Porsche’s 9:11 video magazine venture is designed for a modern generation of drivers. At the same time it looks back to the early days of Porsche and the people and places that made the brand an icon, all while keeping its focus fixed on the future. There’s something there for everyone.

Rather like Lapham’s Quarterly, each issue /segment of 9:11 collects stories that on first glance seem unrelated but are actually thematically connected.

Video episodes in 9:11 issue Extraordinary include, as an example: Manfred Huber lives the Porsche dream—without pedals; nighttime drone flyover at the Porsche Museum; the connection

2

between the new Porsche 718 T and the Bauhaus style; the story of the VW 39; and the travels of the Delaportes in a Porsche 928 S4.

According to the Porsche Communication Team, ‘the lap time of each episode: a snappy 9 minutes and 11 seconds is inspired by the legendary "Nine Eleven".’

Call Me LMNHED

1

It’s new car time in the Turner household. Yes! To be frank, I’m always car shopping. It’s kind of a hobby, you know – of the vocational kind. Meaning if the right combination of timing, available budget and spousal approval all happen to coincide, then a car purchase is eminent. Take this most recent round. It started a little over a year ago. My racecar was on the chopping block. First there was a brush with the Armco crash barrier at a COTA racetrack (Circuit of the Americas; FYI, the Austin TX track hosts the US Formula 1 Grand Prix). Then there was the motor melt down at Hallett’s great regional track in OK. I had the car body refreshed and found a new racing motor. But after that expense, my long-suffering wife instructed me to cut my losses and retire from track events. OK. Sold the racecar, sold the trailer and most of the racing equipment. On my birthday, no less. As the racecar disappeared down the road, heading to its

new home in South Florida, my wife turned to me and said, “This is the best birthday ever!”

Wait, our birthdays are three months apart! Oh, right. She meant it was the best birthday she’d ever celebrated with me, the former race car/track event aficionado. She did take me out for a nice birthday dinner. I remember consuming several decent bourbons to drown the sorrow of being out of the race car/track event business. But really, after 17 years, it was time to cut my losses and move on. Then, about the third bourbon I said, “Maybe I should add up all I’ve spent on track cars over the years.” My lovely wife put her hand on my arm and said, “Maybe you shouldn’t.” “OK,” I agreed through the bourbon buzz.

But I get ahead of myself. In anticipation of selling the racecar, I managed to score a very nice 2002 Boxster S in my favorite Porsche color: Speed Yellow. This was my second Speed Yellow Boxster S. The first one? Another story. The new one had low miles and rare options: M030 sports suspension, factory Speedhumps and factory- painted center console in Speed Yellow. It was a keeper. But anyone who really knows me understands that no car is ever a keeper. It’s potentially always on the chopping block – waiting to get kicked to the curb in favor of something newer or better.

I did briefly think this one was different. It was more-or- less perfect. Rare options combined with low mileage and

3

amazing paint and bodywork meant that this car (which we dubbed Lemonhead or LMNHED on the PCA license plate) was destined for concourse and touring duty. It placed third in a regional concourse and was an amazing companion when we drove to Porsche Palooza. Yep, LMNHED was gonna hang around the Turner household for a long time.

The purchase happened during the Christmas-holiday season when I was homebound for several weeks. My usual work mode involves lots of business travel, sometimes four to six weeks in a row. Very small joke – when people ask me where I’m based, I point to the sky and say, “On an American Airlines flight flying overhead right now!” My wife knows I’m dangerous when not traveling. It means I have more time in the evening to spend on, you guessed it – car shopping!

And so it happened. I frequently use an app to search Craigslist nationwide. I use it to look for something uncommon – like a Speed Yellow Boxster S. Which is how I found LMNHED.

About the Author

Robert Turner (aka RL Turner), is a Texas based author, columnist, and retired track rat who has owned 12 Porsches and is currently plotting how to purchase number 13. His current Porsche-based obsession is preparing his one-of-one 2002 Speed Yellow Boxster S (with factory speed humps, painted console and M030 suspension), for Concours events.

Robert wrote for Planet-9, Flussig Magazine, and 9 Magazine among others and has concocted a new series of musings about all things automotive (with a Porsche bent) for your reading enjoyment. His action-adventure novels, spoiler alert: are based on a Porsche GT3 racer. You’ll find them all listed at www.thedriver-

I reached out to the owner, who lived in Phoenix, maybe an hour after he’d posted it. He was surprised to receive a response so quickly. The photos were not very good, so I asked him for some specific shots to help me make sure this really was a rare car in great condition. I asked for shots of the wheels, the sticker under the hood,

certain interior shots and both the front and back of the title.

I looked at the photos when they came in, as well as Car Fax and the factory-build sheet. The car was a gem. I called him back and asked if he’d take a lower price, but he was firm. Hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I told him I’d FedEx a check for half the agreed price to hold the car and I’d bring the balance when I flew into Phoenix to pick it up. I asked him to take the ad down from Craigslist. When I picked the car up, he told me he should have charged more. In the couple of hours the ad was still active, he got maybe six or seven calls. Yep, he probably could have asked for more and got it. But he was a man of his word. I picked the car up in Phoenix, pointed it east and drove home.

I’ve had the car for a year now and am home from the road again. Believe it or not, I’m looking for cars. Some things never change. ##

Niki Lauda, Famed Formula One Driver, Dies at 70

One of the greatest racing drivers of all time, Austrian Niki Lauda ( LAO-da) won three Formula One World Titles, but it was his second attempt to chase down the title that almost killed him. At 27, he was involved in one of the more horrific accidents in motor racing.

While driving a Ferrari with almost a full tank of gas, he hit a bank at high speed during the 1976 German Grand Prix, the last Formula One race held on the Nürburgring’s 14-mile Nordschleife. Rescue teams were slow to respond, and another driver pulled him unconscious from the wreck of his car. He was so badly burned he was given last rites at the hospital. Half of one ear was incinerated. He declined surgery to repair it because it would take away from his racing season. After six weeks, to general astonishment, he climbed back into his Ferrari. Enzo Ferrari had already hired a replacement driver, not expecting Lauda to return.

Born to a dynastic Viennese family, he was estranged from his father, an industrialist, who disapproved of his son’s lack of interest in anything (including formal education) but automobiles. He drove over the family estates, before he had a license, behind the wheel of a shabby VW convertible, then a mini-Cooper and then a Porsche 911. He also worked as an apprentice garage mechanic. He began his driving career in 1968, using his family name to finance his racing, and destroyed his first car in Formula Three in the first five minutes of his practice run. He used bank loans to finance

disappointing seasons, and was finally “discovered” by Enzio Ferrari in 1973, who signed him in 1974.

Over a 17- year- career from 1969-1985, the fiercely intelligent, quotably outspoken, and physically driven Lauda piloted Porsches, Ferraris, and McLarens, along with a handful of lesser known cars, and won 25 Grand Prix Races, including the World Titles in 1975, 77, and 84.

After his third world title, he retired to follow his entrepreneurial dream with Lauda Air, a personal airline. There, he also piloted its planes, wearing his trademark red ball cap to cover the scars from his accident. Lauda Air became a subsidiary of Austrian Airlines, and Lauda started a second and then a third airline company. He re-entered Formula One racing in 1993, as a consultant to Scuderia Ferrari, in 2001 was for a short period Jaguar’s team principal, and in 2012 joined Mercedes Benz as nonexecutive chairman. It was Lauda who brought driver Lewis Hamilton to Mercedes, resulting in four world titles in five seasons.

Lauda wrote two books, The Art and Technicalities of Grand Prix Driving (1977) and To Hell and Back (1986). His epic battle with his friend and fellow driver James Hunt was made into the 2013 film Rush, directed by Ron Howard.

In 2018, Lauda underwent a lung transplant, a consequence of his hellacious accident where smoke and fumes had damaged his respiratory system four decades earlier. He had also undergone kidney transplants in 1997 and in 2005. He died, May 20th, in Zurich, as confirmed by the family. ##

“This is why people race — to feel the speed, the car and the control. If in my time you pushed too far, you would have killed yourself. You had to balance on that thin line to stay alive.”

Niki Lauda in The Telegraph of London 2015

Problem: How Can I Clean My Stainless Steel Exhaust Tips without Serious Scrubbing?

This month’s DIY Tip comes via a perfectionist in the cleaning department. She recently purchased a new LT3 Corvette and was waging battle against road grime and carbon build -up on her four exhaust tips. (Disclaimer: The ‘vette can’t be held against her as she was willing to share her discovery, gleaned from a Corvette help page, with us.) Having purchased high –priced, auto specific products intended for this purpose, & reluctant to use SOS pads, she was wary but game to give this old standby a try. Looking at the offending tips, she got out her new can of Bar Keeper’s Friend, a very small, square, wet sponge, and a wet rag. She sprinkled the powder on the garage floor, sopped

some of it up on the wet sponge, and applied it to an exhaust tip. “The carbon stains simply disappeared, it was almost like magic, no hard rubbing, just gone, and no scratching, “ she reports. “There must be something in it that has an affinity for carbon stains. The tips are gleaming. ” The wet rag was used to wipe off any remaining residue. ##

The "top roads in your area" section is curated with beautiful photos and a description of the routes near you. Available data includes the length of the road, estimated driving time, best season to drive in and whether it's a scenic stroll or something more action packed. Users do experience having to browse to find local routes but often find roads they are not aware of.

For now, each road starts with a neutral rating of 5, but ratings should get more accurate and plentiful as more folks use the app. Should you find a great road not yet stored in the Roads app, you can record the data yourself. Press and hold the record button for three seconds, which starts the app recording, put your phone down, drive, and press/hold record again to stop. The app automatically adds your drive time and distance, though you can also add a description and photos. Once you submit a drive, it's reviewed by the folks at Porsche and is said to be published within 24 hours. Presuming Porsche works the app’s bugs out in the near future, Roads seems like an easy way to discover great driving routes near you. Enjoy! ##

Above: I admired this pristine, deep orange with black interior, perfectly polished bright work, and Fuchs wheels, 911 waiting on June 29th to get in the line of travel headed for the club’s Upper Cumberland drive. Had to ask about it. “ Fifty years old, “ said the deservedly proud owner. “ It’s hard to believe.”

“You the original owner, noting the Tennessee Antique Auto plate?” I asked. “ No (I believe he said he was the third). this car came from Florida, but I am, almost, an original owner of a ‘67 Mustang,” he revealed.

“How did that come to be?” I asked. “ My aunt had an MGA that she traded in because she bought a brand new ‘67 Mustang with air-conditioning. She drove it all her life and when she died it came to me,” he replied.

Then it was time for him to go. Too late, I realized that I knew about his car, how he acquired it, about his aunt, and her car…I knew everything, everything, but, his name. Editor

Clear Bra – Bigger is Better!

By Mike Moody

Yes, I love a good clear bra and my Porsches have all had one since they came onto the scene. All my recent P cars have had the clear film up to the front part of the hood and headlights, and, I thought that was perfect, until I started noticing other Porsches with total hood coverage. Still, I thought I was in pretty good shape--.until last year.

Driving down I-65 toward Franklin in my new (for me) 991.1 911 I had to fall behind the infamous rock dump truck in order to make my exit and then I saw it! A rock heading for my upper hood and BAM! Yes, I picked up a rock chip on my hood beyond the reach of the protective clear film. My pristine 911 had a pock -mark on its face.

A few months ago, I had the 911 ceramic coated and did it look great--except for that pock -mark that still remains under touch-up paint. Since my Cayenne now doesn’t shine so much beside the 911, I had it detailed and waxed so both cars will smile back at me. As I walked around the Cayenne and stared down at the hood, there they were – BAM! Little rock chips staring back at me that were always there but hidden from me until the hood was polished and buffed out. And yes, all were just beyond the reach of the protective film of the clear bra.

My recommendation is consider a full frontal bra instead of the short version for your next new car, or to replace your current bra. Also if you have a glass sunroof, like I have, that lets in a lot of heat during the summer, consider a dark, heat reflecting film to be installed under the glass. A friend of mine installed it on his Q7 and said the cockpit was much cooler during the summer. ##

track rats

With Sharon Stewart

Driver Education (“DE”) events stress two things: safety and having fun. Safety is always first. If you find yourself at an event where they have a more cavalier philosophy, you might want to choose one of the other DE promoters. There are lots of high-quality events, particularly those sponsored by the PCA.

Strolling through the paddock at a recent DE I met a man staring at his car with a glum look. “What’s up?” I asked.

“Lost a brake pad”.

[Hello? What the heck? Do they just fall out?!? Apparently so.]

“Oh, gee. Sorry about that. What are you gonna do?”

“Dunno. I got a spare, but I lost one of the pins and the one that is still there is bent 30 degrees.” [See item 6 in Brake Parts diagram, and Pins with Springs]

I squatted down to have a look. Sometimes if I stare at a thing long enough, I have a good idea. And sure enough, it came to me. “Lemme go ask Mr. Stewart if he has an idea. I’ll be back.”

I shared the unfortunate news with Mr. Stewart and went off to get ready for my session.

What’s Safe? continued from page 18

Never leave two engineers alone with a mechanical problem.

After the session I returned to the scene of the issue to find them busily twisting together three strands of wire. “What you got there?” I asked.

“Safety wire.”

Instinctively, I knew from the smiles on their faces that these strands were about to perform a function that is not recommended by the manufacturer. Something along the lines of a sticker on a wheelbarrow that says, “Not for Highway Use”.

Fortunately, they had discovered that using one strand was insufficient because it broke when they twisted it to tighten it. So, they “engineered” a solution by twisting three strands into a “cable” that was still small enough to fit through the holes and strong enough to hold the pads in place. The job was finished in time for him to catch the last half of his session and lap happily ever after.

Speaking of safety, you see things at the track that make

3

you wonder. The people who have modified cars usually have a bright red switch on the outside of the car somewhere labeled “fuel” with an arrow pointing toward the word “off”. Why doesn’t my car have one of those? I’ll bet my uber-smart Porsche does that automatically! Or, maybe normal cars are designed so they don’t tend to burst into flames from run-amok fuel or fumes.

(Or, maybe the people who clean up boo-boos at the track want to be sure they can easily reduce the chance of the car they are about to drag out of the gravel bursting into flames or spilling slippery stuff all over the track surface. )

The crew at NCM in Bowling Green has it going on. Their average time to get the tow truck to the boo-boo, get the boo-boo on the truck, and get the whole shooting match back in the paddock is under five minutes. Amazing. We appreciate them a lot. When you pay the big bucks for track time, you’d rather not spend a lot of it sitting around waiting for a restart.

TRACK TIME: We are headed for Indy in August. Yes, there is a road track there with 14 turns and two long straights, including one on the big oval between the grandstands. Come out and join us!

And, always be safe. ##

Road Trip? RM Sotheby’s Presents a Unique, No Reserve, 1 -Day Auction on September 28th of the Contents of the Taj Ma Garaj in Dayton, Ohio

(and the rest of the story is more intriguing than that) Photos by RM Sotheby’s

1

About as far away from India as it is possible to be, another man built a monument to one of the great loves of his life and he called it the Taj Ma Garaj. One of the buildings in the 23,000 square foot garage, comprised of four conjoined warehouses, in a light industrial neighborhood close to downtown Dayton, Ohio, was the home of the 1959 invention of the Pop-Top can. Unlike the first Taj Mahal, the Dayton version’s architecture is decidedly non-descript, but the treasures that are to be found within the buildings are something wondrous to behold.

Those treasures made up the collection of the late John Dixon (below), frequently described by those

who knew him as one of the nicest people involved in the love for all things Porsche. Mr. Dixon, 60, passed away in 2013 after a brief battle with cancer; his garage and his collection have been in a state of suspended animation until the announcement was made that Sotheby’s would hold a one- day, entirely

without reserve, auction on-site in Dayton, on September 28th, 2019. (Bids can also be called in if you aren’t able to be physically present.)

Mr. Dixon’s love affair with the Porsche began in 1970 when he was driving his all American muscle car, a Chevy Camaro 396 V8 with 375 horsepower down the interstate and then, he was passed by a 911, and the 911 made going by him look easy. Dixon gave chase and reaching speeds of 100 mph, discovered that his brakes as well as his tires were going to give out before he ever passed the 911. A year later, Dixon had his own Porsche and he began seriously collecting in the 1990s. The result will be on display when over 30 rare Porsches and Volkswagen automobiles, as well as motorbikes, arcade memorabilia, a Rothman’s neon sign, a 1956 VW Beetle Outlaw by Franz Muhr, called “Death”, a 1970 Porsche 914-6 by Karman, a 2007 Porsche 911 GTS RS, Continued on page 21

It has been in Dixon’s collection for over 20 years and has a pre-auction valuation of 1.5 to 2 million dollars. Below: Only some of what’s going under the hammer at the no -reserve auction waits patiently.

Stadium Box Seats 5-8 from Crosley Field, service manuals, advertising memorabilia, engines, parts, a first edition of Porsche: Excellence was Expected by Karl Ludvigsen, 1977, and “one of the strangest assemblages of Porsche cars in the world”, all waiting expectantly to see who will take home one of Mr. Dixon’s many treasures.

Dixon, a philanthropist and a lover of children and animals, with a special place in his heart for children who suffered from illness, also had a droll sense of humor. He didn’t tell jokes, but he exhibited his wit in several of the special design Porsches that he commissioned.

Take, for example, the 1953 Porsche Custom Limousine (at right). Built on chassis # 50146 that began life as a 1953 356. Dixon had the limo assembled from several cars, filled the cabin with rare early Porsche accessories, gave it suicide doors, and included an air-ride suspension. The pre-value auction estimate of this one- of- a- kind vehicle is $150,000 to $250,000. The fun Mr. Dixon had while creating it must have been priceless.

While the limo is a head snapper it can’t compare to Dixon’s version/vision of a delivery van, which he called a Kreuzer (right). His iconic “van”, with Taj advertising logo, is powered by a twin cam Carrera engine, stashed aft, leaving not much room for cargo, but that’s what the front trunk is for. It, too, will go under the hammer on September 28th.

Mr. Dixon was generous with his cars and his garage. He routinely held charity events there and welcomed thousands of people who simply came to enjoy the things that they found on display. He also believed in using his cars and letting others drive them, including his ill-fated 959, the first of its kind, street legal, imported into the United States.

As the story goes, Dixon had agreed to let an auto journalist named Mike Spinelli come to Dayton to drive the car and was exercising it before Spinelli arrived, when a woman, driving a Toyota and hurrying to her second job, blew through a stop sign and totaled the 959. Dixon let Spinelli know and invited him to come drive something else. The cost to restore the 959 was so high; that Dixon put what was left of it on display in the garage, where it still sits today.

For a complete list of the auction lots go to www.RMSothebys.com, better yet, go to Dayton. ##

Right: The Kreuzer’s power plant takes up all the room aft.

Thoughts from the Open Road (Send us your Favorite Photo, old or new, for publication)

“ A Porsche will always look like a Porsche. My grandfather took these shapes from nature, so the head lamps of the Porsche look a little like the eyes of a frog, but it comes from nature, the best shapes are from nature, so why change?”

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche

Does this look vaguely familiar?

With only 2 months to go before its official debut, Porsche brought out a prototype Taycan at the Formula E Finale held in Brooklyn. A little touch of the 996’s styling perhaps?

The New 992- Yes, Absolutely Yes, continued from page 5

The headlights keep the classic round shape and now have a thin chrome ring if optioned with PDLS Plus (Porsche Dynamic Lighting System), which is a reminder of the chrome rings around the lights of the early 911’s.

The interior of the 992 is also very retro while being completely modern. The classic gauge cluster with the analog center tachometer remains. The difference now is that 2 screens flank it. These can show gauges or other info such as your map in excellent detail. The dash has a small shelf that runs the entire width of the cabin like the old cars did. The design of the cabin is cleaner than the 991 and very beautiful. Not only does it look great, the quality and feel is incredible. The switches on the dash have a knurled metal finish and feel substantial. Even the controversial “electric shaver” shifter is nice to use.

The rear end is very cool. The taillights now have a red light bar that spans the entire width of the rear end similar to the new Panamera, Cayenne, and Macan models. This is no longer restricted to the all-wheel drive models on the 911. It is standard on all.

The tail pipes are available in two options. The standard exhaust system has quad exits similar to the 991 Carrera S. The sport exhaust system has large dual exits that have been moved slightly closer to the center almost exactly like the 991 GT2 RS.

The badging is also delightfully retro. It looks very similar to the script on the old cars and has a nice brushed metal look. The other very cool detail of the rear end is the deck lid with the center brake light.

The center brake light is now oriented lengthways instead of stretching across the width of the deck lid. It resembles a pause symbol, which is no accident, because a Porsche never stops, it only temporarily pauses.

There are nine vent slats on either side of

3

the brake light. Nine slats plus the pause symbol brake light equals nine-eleven. Also, since there are nine slats on each side of the light, it can represent nine-nine-two. The vent slats also hide one last secret. They are how the all-wheel drive models are now differentiated from the rear wheel drive models, since the rear light strip is no longer exclusive to AWD. The rear wheel drive models have thin gloss black strips running along the slats and the all-wheel drive models have chrome strips.

Now we get to nerd out over the engineering of the 992. I noticed while driving how well all of the systems worked in harmony to create a very refined yet totally engaging experience. Let’s start with the engine. It is a 3.0-liter twin turbo flat six, similar to the 991.2, but also not. It shares the same basic engine block as the previous car, but throws everything else out. All of the other components have been refined for the new car. This engine in

Carrera S form now produces 443 HP (+23 HP) and 390 Lb./ft. of torque (+22 LB/ft.). The specs for other future models have not

been released.

One big change is the design of the turbo chargers. The turbos in the 991.2 were co-rotating. This means if you are looking at the front of the engine the turbos would be rotating the same direction. This design helps cut costs because the same turbo can be used on both sides of the engine. The down side is that the exhaust has to take slightly different paths to each turbo, which causes them to spin at slightly different speeds. This results in the turbos pumping slightly different amounts of air into the engine.

The new engine has mirror image, counter-rotating turbos. This means that the exhaust takes the exact same path to each turbo resulting in equal amounts of air -flow on each side. This allows the air to be pumped into the engine more efficiently, which helps create more power and torque to shove us into the seat and make us giggle like children.

The transmission is now an 8-speed unit where the previous car had a 7 speed. The basic design is shared is with the new Panamera and word on the street is that there is room in the bell housing between the engine and transmission to fit an electric motor. This is here to allow for future electrification, but there are no plans to add batteries to the 911 at this time. Porsche is waiting, however, until hybrid electric technology has advanced to the point that the soul of the 911 will not be compromised. So, yes, the angry gasoline engine that we all love is here to stay for a while yet.

Porsche is now using a data networking system between the control units for the drive and safety systems in the car called Flex-Ray. This allows for much faster data transfer as well as the consolidation of control units to reduce complexity and increase efficiency. Continued on page 24

The New 992 continued from page 24

The number of control units can be reduced using this system, for example; Porsche 4D chassis control system. This system consolidates the stability, steering and traction control systems into one unit. This system is very smart and totally unobtrusive.

One of the coolest parts of the system is the new water sensors in the wheel wells. They are acoustic sensors that identify the specific sound of water spraying off the tires while driving in wet conditions. When it realizes that the conditions are wet it gives a message in the instrument cluster that advises the driver to switch to wet mode. This will optimize the engine, transmission and stability systems for wet conditions that could cause hydroplaning. This is important because the 911 has an extremely wide tire for such a light chassis, which makes hydroplaning more of a concern.

Now we get to the really fun stuff. So how does the 992 drive? Yeah. It’s amazing. On the street it is very refined and quiet. Road and engine noise have been decreased since the 991, which can be seen as a bad thing but bear with me here. It now has fancy LED Matrix headlights. A technology gimmick? Not quite. The quiet cabin is actually very nice when cruising down the road and listening to music, or talking to a friend on the phone. However, the push of a button and a stab of the throttle turns the 992 into a howling monster, ready to attack any track or winding road that you throw at it.

The optional Matrix headlights may seem unnecessary at first but are actually a very nice tool. They can project further and automatically control the high beam for oncoming traffic. Remember, the further you can see, the faster you can go.

I had the pleasure of driving the 992

2

at the Utah Motorsports Campus (formerly Miller Motorsports Park) just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. The surroundings were incredible. We were in the middle of a desert. The temperature was in the 90’s but turning in a circle showed snow-capped mountains all around that seemed way too close to be real. The Great Salt Lake was also nearby. a shimmering blue beauty in the middle of a dry desert.

There were three main driving events with classroom time in between. The first was on a faster, more open track comparing the 911 to the Mercedes Benz AMG GTS. The big Benz is an incredible car that is beautiful to look at, handles very well, and has a savage V8 up front that never fails to bring laughter with the stab of the throttle. As good as this car is, however, it feels a bit unwieldy compared to the 911.

The 911 is totally composed and the traction control systems are unobtrusive. The engine also makes instant torque, which despite its power handicap allows it to still feel quicker out of the corners than the AMG. The 911 never complains at you and loves ripping up the track all day long.

The second event was an autocross course vs. the BMW 850i. Both the 911 and BMW in this test were all wheel drive and had 4-wheel steering. This may seem like a bit of an unfair comparison, but we were told the main reason was because buyers may compare both because of price point.

The BMW is a very cool, fast car and was surprisingly nimble around the tight turns because of the electronic trickery under the

“ The push of a button and a stab of the throttle turns the 992 into a howling monster, ready to attack any track or winding road that you throw at it.”

3

hood. Despite this it was still out of its element on this tight course. The 911 absolutely clobbered it through the corners.

In the 911, the handling is almost telepathic. You think, “I want to put the car right here” and it goes there.

The third event was on a tighter road course vs. the Jaguar F-Type R. This is definitely a formidable opponent for the 911, but I did not get to drive it. I was in the last group to drive this car and by the end of the day all three F-Type’s had overheated and broken down. This goes to show how well engineered the 911 really is.

It took abuse on a hot Utah day by a bunch of amateur drivers (myself included) and never skipped a beat. All of the 911’s were still happily shredding up the track all day long. On this last track the 911 was fantastic. This was probably one of the most fun experiences I have ever had behind the wheel.

The 992 is one of the best cars I have had the privilege to drive. It is still a true sports car that can rip around a track or back road, then with a push of a button can become very civilized for a nice date night.

The new technology is impressive and only makes the car better. Is it as raw as some of its predecessors like the 997? No. How it makes up for this is by being incredibly good at anything you might use a sports car for, and reliable enough to run hard all day long.

I’m in love and excited to see the 992s start arriving in Music City.
