Over 35 % of all exhibitors are from EUROPE where Germany has the biggest share of 25%. This proves the extent that these com-panies believe in POOLASIA’s professional-ism and quality approach as a trustworthy and respected platform to offer an introduc-tion in to the region and its diversified local markets.

Many companies are presenting technolo-gies which are not only new to the mar-ket but are also outstanding in terms of achieved water quality, energy efficiency and overall environmentally friendliness, which is especially for the tourism driven pool market of interest.

The policy makers and regulatory bodies are key for market development as it is these who implement quality and safety standards for the benefit for all.

We are convinced that our Awareness Conference "TOURISM & HEALTHY WATER” will offer new insights into the potential of healthy swimming pool water and how it can be used to promote tourism.

I hope all visitors have a successful show and make use of all our events offered.Thank you

Page 14: POOLASIA Magazine EXPO 2011 Edition

Everyone who has ever suf-fered from an ear infection in his lifetime will know just how painful it was. It can ruin holi-days.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is

you!

www.pseudomonas.com

The word Pseudomonas means false unit, from the Greek pseu-do- (Greek: ψευδο, false) and monas (Latin: monas, from Greek: μονος, a single unit). The stem word mon was used early in the history of microbiology to refer to germs, e.g., Kingdom Mon-era. The species name aeruginosa is a Latin word meaning copper rust, as seen with the oxidized copper patina on the Statue of Lib-erty. This also describes the blue-green bacterial pigment seen in laboratory cultures of the species. Source: Wikipedia

P. aeruginosa is a view microns long and extremely mo-tile with a propeller like tail ( called flagella)

with

poolasia l traveller

Swimming pools are open for everyone and every-thing. As well as people, bacteria is also drawn to the

lure of the water. There is one bacteria, Pseudomanos aeruginosa, which thrives in the pool the most.

Introduced into the water by the bathers skin flora or by the environment as soil, it is able to grow by multiplying rapidly and even protect itself against chlorine by excreting a slimy substance known as Extra Cellular Polymeric Substances (EPS).

Slippery tiles - as seen on many steps and walls in a pool indicates that the pool is not properly disinfected and that Pseudomonas is with you.

They are hiding in between tiles, inside underwater illumi-nations and even inside the stainless steel pipes of the pool ladder. It can literally be found everywhere that cleaning is not possible or not conducted.

These microbiological “hot spots” infect the whole water body as soon the residual disinfectant, chlorine, is not any more in place.

P. aeruginosa is the most common of cause ear infections (otitis externa) and of skin rashes and dermatitis and is of-ten associated with pools and spas.

The Aquatic Foundation reports, that Otitis externa is the most frequent cause of infant and toddler visits to the doc-tor.

Dr. Alex Antoniou from the NSPF, USA will be talking about paddling pools at “Tourism & Healthy Water” Conference.

14

Page 15: POOLASIA Magazine EXPO 2011 Edition

PAINPAIN

Patient with the painful ear infection “otitis externa”, the so called “swimmer’s ear” undergoes treatment.

is, that Pseudomonas aeruginosa can be easily killed by chlo-rinated water, but if the water disinfection is not performed properly, which is common with manual disinfection, then the unluckily ones might catch an infection as a result.

In General, pools operated by automatic measurement and control systems will provide excellent pool disinfection at all times, 24 hours / day. Here, disinfectants and pH correction chemicals will be dosed continuously on demand (also while you are swimming) in the pump room to the circulating wa-ter. This means, that water always contains the exact balance of chemicals required for a pool.

You will not need to close at night the pool for cleaning (un-less you close regardless) and there is also no need to carry out what is known as “shock chlorination” which is temporar-ily turning the pool into a bleached pond in order to degrade the chlorine by-products.

The high-quality VitaLight® POWER LED underwater floodlights offer top performance with up to 24 x 3 W and a light output of 100 Lumen/Watt. Three colour temperatures assure a highly individual ambience. Colour temperatures of 3000 Kelvin (warm white), 4500 Kelvin (cool white) and 6000 Kelvin (daylight) are available as well as RGB for find-ing exactly the type of light suitable for the ambience desired.

More energy efficiency

One VitaLight® 24 x 3 W POWER LED provides as much light as a conventional halogen light with 400 W, but consumes 80% less energy. Thus the purchase of LED underwa-ter floodlights as compared to conventional halogen or PAR floodlights pays for itself within a short time.

Greater life expectancy

The VitaLight® POWER LED underwater floodlights by Hugo Lahme are made of corro-sion-resistant gun metal or bronze and stainless steel. They have an average service life of 50,000 hours. The use of gun metal or bronze has a number of benefits in terms of both quality and durability. Due to their rough surface, the fittings match excellently with concrete, do not become brittle with age and do not break. Another advantage is that bronze fittings can be used in seawater pools without any loss of quality or cor-rosion.

All VitaLight® underwater floodlights are equipped with 4-mm-thick safety glass. The 5-metre silicone cable makes them suitable for use in all kinds of pools, whether tile pools, liner pools or prefabricated pools.

More comfort

All VitaLight® POWER LED underwater floodlights are compatible with each other and easy to install. The floodlights are controlled either by DMX, remote control or switch key. That is why VitaLight® POWER LED underwater floodlights are easy to integrate in a water attraction or a sequence of attractions.

More safety

Beside safety class III IP 68, 4-mm-thick safety glass and excellent quality of manufac-turing ”Made in Germany”, all LED floodlights made by Hugo Lahme have passed all safety tests and fulfil all EU and German standards as follows:

· Low-voltage directive (EN 61347-2-13)

· Standard for lamps (EN 61047)

· Suppressor safety standard (EN 55015)

· EMV standard (EN 61547:1955)

SHADES (THAILAND) COMPANY

Shades (Thailand) Co., Ltd is a privately-owned company incorporated under the laws of Thai-land, and based in Phuket, Thailand. The business was initially created to cater for the local demand for marine covers for the lei-sure boating industry (awnings and covers for leisure boats). A secondary objective was to introduce shade sails (which are popular aw-nings products for commercial and domestic markets in Australia in particular) into the lo-cal Phuket market.

FABRIC ARCHITECTURE: BEAUTIFULLY PRACTI-CAL SOLUTIONS FOR TROPICAL LIVING

Modern, lightweight and durable materials are offering new exciting and versatile build-ing options, especially in climates user-friend-ly towards outdoor living.

Shades(Thailand)Co.,Ltd (www.shadesasia.com <http://www.shadesasia.com/> ) has grown with this trend over the last six years by offering “eye-catching” and high quality design and build solutions to the resort and residential sectors of Phuket and beyond.

Pool-side and garden salas, popular dining and relaxing retreats in our climate, lend them-selves especially to this style of architecture.

Framed structures (above) can utilize specially treated steel, stainless steel or timber compo-nents. Teak or Thai “redwood” with polished marine grade stainless steel are a popular choice.

SHADE SAILSAlternative designs can include simple but elegant “sails” tensioned between existing structures or framed fabric roofing.

So what is the new path we should be treading?

An important entity that many Asian countries would do well to emulate would be to establish proper pool regulatory bodies. Countries like Singapore, Korea and Japan have excellent examples of these. It is necessary to do away with the culture of bribery that is rampant in Asia. No under-the-table economics. Everything should be done by the book, which means, of course, it is necessary to write this ‘instruction manual’ first-efficient policies and procedures that are mutually benefitting for all parties.

Another simple yet effective way is to create and implement a transparent and efficient pool governing system, for example the introduction of a pool rating system not unlike the ‘stars’ we use to rank hotels around the world. Private initiatives can join forces to establish an official ‘watchdog’ body to expose those that do not comply with water safety standards. Let’s see if a 5-star hotel has a 5-star pool.

And finally, of course, at each aquatic facility it is essential to have well-trained personnel, from the management to the lifeguards and to the maintenance staff. Each and every person has his or her own very important role to play. For Asia this means a change of mindset and values; this can only be achieved through education and acceptance of setting and maintaining a higher standard.

Over a number of years I’ve built a reputation for going to places othersfear to tread; building waterparks in countries such as the former SovietUnion, Communist Bloc, Indo-China, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, where stability was an issue can be a challenge but not one I personally shy away from.

This experience has given me a unique insight into three main regions of the world - Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Asia - and their standpoint on water quality and professionalism.

In Eastern Europe, poor water quality is generally not tolerated and although these countries may be seen as economically poor on the world stage the hygiene standards of the general public there are high. The same goes for the Middle East where professional people have been hired by the rich Arab business owners to maintain the quality of their growing leisure industry. So why is there a disconnection when it comes to Asian countries?

The first issue is that much of the Asian business culture tends to be profit-oriented and almost everything must be done at breakneck speed. Where material things and wealth are a measure of success, the culture of ‘get-rich-quick’ is at odds with delivering a quality product. The potential for compromising ethics is much higher.

Secondly, it is well known that in Asia there is the culture of not losing face and unfortunately this leads to park visitors not wishing to complain and create a scene. This non-confrontational culture of Asians leads to the third issue of the combination of generally low build quality and the lack of preventive maintenance. If park operators think they can get away with visitors not complaining, then the thought of “if it ain’t broke, we don’t fix it” soon becomes “if it looks like it’s working, don’t think about it!” This attitude leads to a rapid downward spiral of deteriorating conditions in waterparks.

A fourth issue is the relatively young age of the leisure industry in Asia. Fifty years ago many people in Asia were more interested in putting food on the table, but as the demand for western-type leisure increased, so too has the immense pressure placed on its delivery been magnified. The surface has been copied but the substance is lacking. Asia lacks leisure specialists who can ensure that safety and quality are not compromised. This is not in our blood yet - we may have the hardware but need to embrace the software.

Finally, it has to be acknowledged that the companies that own waterparks in many parts of Asia are conglomerates whose real reason for building parks is to create demand for their core businesses, such as real estate developments. Compounding this is the cronyism that allows companies, to whom waterparks are not their passion, to build and manage such establishments. Many park managers are really just business administrators - does that make sense to you?

A natural swimming pool surrounded by a couple of chemical pools in Istanbul Turkey

NATURE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Developed over 25 years ago in Austria and Germany, natural swimming pools (NSP) do not use any chemicals at all. Instead, aquatic plants, beneficial bacteria, and mi-crobes growing in a specially constructed regeneration zone use Mother nature`s organic method of filtering and purifying water.

With a patented design for the biological cleaning of swimming pool water, NSPs built by BioNova Natural Pools are completely chemical free, ecological friendly, and produce healthy, clear water that is safe for swim-ming.“Natural pools use far less energy, have smaller carbon footprint, and are more sustainable than traditional, chemical pools,” says BioNova`s CEO Rainer Grafinger. “For the environmentally sensitive swimmer, there is great satisfaction in eliminating chlorine, salt, or other chemicals and energy-consuming devices.”

36

Page 37: POOLASIA Magazine EXPO 2011 Edition

Because the pond-like regeneration zone can be con-nected to the swimming area or remain completely sep-arate, NSPs allow for a great deal of flexibility in design and construction techniques. They can be designed and built using liners to resemble a natural pond; for a more formal design, they can be constructed of concrete in a rectilinear shape with a traditional water garden.

Natural pools are suitable for any environment. BioNo-va has installed NSP`s on five continents and in all loca-tions ranging from hot try climate to tropical regions to seasonal areas that reach freezing temperatures in the winter. Existing chemical pools can also be renovated and converted in an NSP.

Globally, BioNova has a growing network of authorized dealer Partners in over 35 countries and is world leader in natural swimming pools. Every BioNova dealer is an independent firm with a proven track record in high end residential and public construction.

Each of them has gone through extensive training training and is certified to have met the rigorous NSP standards established by BioNova. Every installation is constructed only by a licensed dealer partner.

Natural, eco friendly and healthy, BioNova natural pools are truly an evolution in swimmable water shapes.

The way chlorine is added to the swimming pool water has a significant effect on its disinfection result and consumption.

1 Manual disinfection:

Referring to the graph, applying Chlorine manually will usually result in an unbalanced chlorine concentration. Manual disinfec-tion is not only the most chemical consuming way to disinfect pools, it also is the main reason that chlorine by-products, the cause of the chlorine smell and allergenic reactions, develop. Since the pool will have “time windows” where it is not safe for swimming, it continually triggers the growth of bacteria & algae during that time.

The more swimmers are in the pool, the more chlorine will be consumed. Chlorine dissipates more rapidly in warm water than in cold water. The loss of chlorine due to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays is another “consuming” factor. Therefore, a busy pool on a sunny day can very quickly turn out to be unsafe for swimming This is because viruses and bacteria introduced by the swimmer or environment will be not killed anymore. Think about children who often swallow such water!

The operator needs to regularly check the pH and chlorine levels and since he should never apply pool chemicals to the pool while people are in the pool, he can do it while the pool is closed for swimming or by adding a small amount into the balancing tank.

Enough chlorine when needed?

HOW

SUMMARY: You can see, this manual dosing usually leads to ex-cess concentrations of chlorine or not enough of it; both of which make swimming unsafe. It is labour intensive as well and requires daily care by the pool operator.

Consider the fact that bacteria likes to stay in the sand filter. This is because it harbours a lot of “nutrients”, like skin cells, dandruff, hair, which consume the chlorine so quickly; it is actually a per-fect breading ground for them. It is standard practice to let the pump only run for 6 hours a day. But, what would happen if the pump ran every morning for longer, pushing the bacteria back to the pool where it can be dissolved by the chlorine. More in this in the next TARA issue.

2 Continuous disinfection WITHOUT control = STATIC disinfection

Tablet chlorinators (also known as erosion feeders) release chlo-rine depending on the water flow. However, they only work when the pump is in operation. It depends on the pre-adjusted dos-ing rates as to whether or not enough chlorine is available. This method does not adjust to actual demand for chlorine, as how many people swim or how strong the sun is shining.

It is a much better option than manual disinfection, since the re-peated growth of bacteria or algae can be prevented. However it can turn out to be more costly, since chlorine will be released during times where it is not necessary.

Pool buyers should ask for this option, since it ensures a stable operation of the pool.

3 Continuous disinfection WITH control = DYNAMIC disinfection

Automatic measurement, control & dosing of chlorine and acid is the most economic and environmentally-friendly way of add-ing chlorine. It ensures healthy swimming pool water at all times with chlorine levels being as high or low as necessary at all times. Moreover, since the pH levels will also be controlled, you can be assured that the chlorine is doing its disinfection job efficiently. This will significantly contribute to the reduction of the costs. Of course, the investment costs are the highest, but the running costs are the lowest if proper pump rooms are provided to keep your investment running. Look for good trained service to cali-brate the controller and clean the sensors. Decide yourself, how much is your health and wellbeing worth to you?

7.2 66 347.5 49 517.8 33 67 8.0 23 77

This is very important for every pool owner, hotel & resort manager and

operator of public pools to know. The bigger the pool, the more important this information is. Why?

Interested in decreasing running costs? ........then carry on reading!

The principle function of chlorine is to kill bacteria by oxidizing it’s cells. It should do nothing more, nothing less, but unfortu-nately it does. It can also react with pollu-tions, like organics, urea, sweat etc.. The less concentration required, the cleaner

the water will be. How efficient it can dis-infect depends mainly on the pH levels of the water.

Now we have to talk about 2 different “forms” of Chlorine. The Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) is the active form of chlorine and the Hypochlorite Ion (OCl-) is the one which has virtually no disinfection power and is therefore called the “inactive form” (see table 1).

Looking at table 1, it shows us that at a pH 5 all the chlorine is in active form (100% activity). But nobody should swim in ace-tic water with an pH of 5. The most desir-able condition exists between pH 7.0 and

7.2, representing also the pH of tear fluid. At a pH of 7.2 chlorine exists to 66% of HOC - losing 34% of its disinfection power.

At a pH of 7.5, 51% of the disinfection power is lost.

Since most pools have even higher pH val-ues, you can imagine how much disinfec-tion power will be lost.

In other words: If a pool requires a pH of 7.8, three drums of chlorine chemicals are needed each month. A pH of 7.2 is required for only two drums. So it saves money and time to make sure your levels are all cor-rect.

PAC Heat Pump unit pro-vide hot water all year round while drastically reducing your energy requirement. It has been designed to meet any kind of place, such as swimming pool, spa, sauna, and also household unit which could be the constant temperature hot water sup-ply application.

Working Principle

The mission of swimming pool heat pump is to adsorb the heat from natural air and then put it into pool water, or transit the energy of pool water to air; that is the way it heats up or cools down the pool water.Driven by electricity, the compres-sor compresses the Freon into gas with high temperature and high pressure; then the gas goes into the condenser (tube and fins heat exchanger), becoming liquid with low temperature and low pressure by heat exchange with outdoor air; Through expansion valve, the liquid refrigerant goes into the evapora-tor accordingly and the pool water is cooled down, The reverse comes true when heating.

Slashing energy use from 30% to 90%

Make Eco-Friendly ChoicesFor your swimming pool today...

Run at night and maximise your dollar savings!!

Cristal Flo cartridge filter combines top-end filter performance with low maintenance. Water flows efficiently through the Cristal Flo filters, often allowing the use of smaller pumps or lower pump speeds to minimise energy use, and when you rinse cartridges rather than backwash you can significantly reduce water use too. When you rinse cartridges, water use is reduced by hundreds if not thousands of litres per year. Complimented by a strong durable construction that provides longer servicelife, Cristal Flo delivers commercial-grade performance that keeps pools clean and sparkling, day in and day out.

More efficient water flow through filter allows use of smaller pump or lower speed to minimize energy use.

An exclusive blend of technical innovations are behind the monumental energy savings possible with IntelliFlo. As the first to use super-efficient permanent magnet motors, IntelliFlo® typically reduces energy use by 30% - 90% compared to pumps with traditional induction motors. IntelliFlo® also employs variable drive technology controlled by an onboard computer and sophisticated software to allow pinpoint programming, or totally automatic operation, to achieve and maintain optimum (typically lower) flow rates for further energy savings. IntelliFlo® operates at an average of just 1/10th of a horsepower, using about 100 watts of energy…about the same as a light bulb!

The Max-E-Pro is a highly featured pump that delivers far greater efficiency than anything seen on the market to date, and does so with the lowest noise levels. Featuring extremely quiet hydraulic design, this pump allows the homeowner to take advantage of low cost off-peak electricity tariffs and run this pump at night, resulting in saving money for themselves and with minimal disturbance for the neighbours. The Max-E-Pro helps to save money by minimising running costs - more turnovers for less dollars.

Suction points in swimming pools are always a potential and much underestimated source of risk. Suction forces generated by recirculation and swimming pool attrac-tion pumps can, depending on the layout and interconnection, produce an extremely powerful suction effect that can draw in hair and articles of clothing. As the market leader for the production of attractions for public swimming pools, Schmalenberger has addressed this problem intensively and developed a patented suction niche with a grid that embodies four decisive advantages. The new suction niche design is a resolute concept complying in every respect with EN 13451 (european standard). This product gives you peace of mind when it comes to safe operation of your swim-

ming pool.
