Podgorica Tour Itinerary

Starting point of this tour is in front of the Clock Tower the onlyundamaged building during Second World War bombing of the city.Constructed in the late 17th century by Mehmed Pasha Osmanagic,trademark of the city is 16m high and used to be the highest buildingin Podgorica and there are few traditional songs that don't mentionthis memorable place. Clock is oriented towards old town and afternational restaurant „PodVolat“ turn right to enter the narrow street.

Even though old town (Stara Varos) architecture is not aspreserved as in some other Montenegrin old towns, Ottomaninfluence in Stara Varos is very obvious. Four centuries ofOttoman rule is demonstrated in narrow streets but among allin oriental sacral monuments – mosques. There were six ofthem in Podgorica, but bombing survived only two. On firstturning right you will see the Osmanagic Mosque – constructedin 18th century by the same man who built Clock Tower. Eventhough the mosque was badly damaged during the bombing,the reconstruction done two decades ago brought the new lifeinto this sacral monument. Memorial tomb of the builder is infront of the mosque.

After turning right by Osmanagica Mosque (though you won't besurprised if people call it Lukacevic Mosque, after the family whotook care of it during many years) narrow street continues. Youwill see backyards and fences with people doing their dailyroutine. After some couple hundred meters on the crossroad youwill see the oldest mosque in Stara Varos – Old Doganj Mosque,constructed in the late 15th century.

After the mosque continue straight forward till the end of this long street and then first turn left, andon the next right, and start slowly going down by the stairs to Ribinca river confluence into Moracariver. Podgorica is actually one of the rare cities that lies on 5 different rivers – Moraca, Zeta, Ribnica,Sitnica and Cijevna, so it shouldn't surprise you that it has so many bridges. The oldest of them isSastavci bridge, believed to be from the Roman period, but reconstructed in the 18th century byOttomans.

Cross the old bridge and continue right climb via stairs. Onceyou reach the boulevard you'll find yourself in front of theParliament of Republic of Montenegro. Montenegro is civic,democratic, ecological state of social justice, with Presidentwho's head of the state. Parliament is the place where allimportant decisions are made. The walk further leads by thestatue of the only Montengrin king, from the beginning of 20thcentury when Montenegro was independent monarchy – KingNikola I Petrovic, man who brought international recognitionand independence to Montenegro on Berlin Congress in 1878.

On the traffic lights turn left and enter the main

promenade of Podgorica (closed for traffic every day

after 17.00h). Ulica Slobode is the name of the street

that will lead you to the main square of the city –

Square of Republic, with gorgeous fountain in the

center.

After crossing the square turn leftand you'll enter Bokeska street,epicenter of nightlife ofMontenegrin capital with allimportant cafes, and clubs. What ofthe cafes is not in Bokeska it is inthe one that crosses it – Njegosevastreet on the right. On the left sideof Njegoseva street is paved partwhere is located Municipality ofPodgorica, and the statue ofMontengrin heroe Marko Miljanovand also the main library across it.
