Exciting Happenings in 2014 for POAC…

As I write this, I am anxiously awaiting the 2014 POAC National Convention next week…We have great committee agendas to discuss, knowledgeable seminar and workshop presenters, an exciting line-up of stops on our annual “Field Trip”, and an awesome group of POA attendees representing over twenty states. Thanks to Alison Esler and the KY POAC for hosting us again this year and for providing a hospitality area during our convention stay.

Plans are being finalized for the National Congress Show in Tulsa OK, June 10-18th at Expo Square. I had an opportunity to tour the facility last month and it is a beautiful show grounds. As soon as I return from the Convention, I will begin preparing information for the website and POA magazine regarding Congress details…headquarters hotels, camping, stalling, entry information, etc. There will be golf carts available to rent through the POAC again this year, and there is a feed store on the grounds that can meet your feed and bedding needs. Featherlite Trailers is once again a POAC National Sponsor and is the presenting sponsor for the 2014 National

Congress. They will have trailers on-site for our viewing pleasure, and hopefully some of our members may decide to take one home! As always, this show takes many sponsors to make it happen…the POAC Youth are asking for help with their mission of sponsoring the Congress High Point Saddles and Reserve High Point Show Halters. Anyone that would like to help with one of the many sponsorship opportunities can contact the POAC National Office for more information…thanks for helping make the 2014 POAC Congress the best it can be!

The Eastern Classic Show and the West World Show are taking place over Memorial Weekend and Fourth of July Weekend respectively. These are two great opportunities to fine-tune before the Congress. With the Eastern Classic in Cloverdale Indiana and the West-World in Longmont Colorado, both are easily accessible to the membership.

The POA International Sale and Futurity Show will be in Lake St. Louis Missouri on October 1—4th. With all of the barns and arena under one roof, the weather is not a worry and the temperature in St. Louis in early October should be moderate (although our weather has been unpredictable all winter)! Justin Ochs will once again be the sale auctioneer and I am sure both the sale and the futurity committees have some new and exciting things planned for the week!

As we move forward into 2014, I hope that we can move into positive directions for the good of the breed. I get calls weekly from a few concerned members that have heard “rumors” about the POAC…the club is out of money, the youth are going to not going to have awards at our National events, the membership is going to stop registering ponies, the POAC is being absorbed by another breed, and on and on and on. I am here to tell you that POAC is financially secure, we will have nice awards for our participants at our National events, we are not being absorbed by any other organization, and our membership will continue to breed, purchase, and register ponies. Have things changed over the past ten years? Absolutely. As with most other equine breeds, our registration numbers have declined over the past few years in some categories. Our show pony numbers look good and transfers are up. People still want that broke pony for their child to start out on…and with social media it is easier to advertise sale ponies as well as find available ponies.

Until next time, hug your kids and your ponies…

AZ POA thanks Odyssey’s Classy Lassby Carly Thunberg

February 8 marked the start of AZ POA’s season, and along with a show came appreciation from our club to an extremely remarkable athlete. We would like to express thanks towards Odyssey’s Classy Lass, or Daisy, for her tremendous participation. Five lucky children rode Daisy in 26 out of 92 classes, adding up to a whole lot of tack changes. Helena Wolters, as she does Highpoint awards, has Daisy’s registration number memo-rized. Our club still questions how

much Daisy enjoys Arizona.Daisy, however, was really fortunate to be ridden in the beautiful weath-er Arizona had. Also enjoying the weather were the members of our leadline group, who were included in a number of new 2014 classes. The future of the POA club, leadliners, came and conquered in classes such as “Leadline Trail” and “Leadline Showmanship”. Pictured are Scarlett Holgate, Diana Peaton, and Zippin Ona Impulse before their Leadline Showmanship class.

Hi everyone! I hope you are gearing up for show season! It is coming up quickly! Our Tennessee POA club members came together to participate and demonstrate in the Southern Equine Expo in February at Miller Coliseum. The POA breed was showcased twice during the event, and our club par-ticipated in the Parade of Champions on Saturday night, at which Maggie and I rode with Chris Cox! The POA breed was represented by Maddie Brewer, Bethany Sims, Kelsey Wright, Laura Grimes and their amazing po-nies, Mariah, Fran, Maggie, Tux and Snowy. The TN members showed how ver-satile the breed is by riding English, western, costume, and driving. We also had a booth set up to give in-formation and answer questions on POAs as shown in this picture. This is me helping out in the booth and having a fantastic time at the Expo!

Winter Report: Hello from Texas!

Youth News & Pony Interest

by Brittany BevisCourtesy Equine Chronicle

No matter where you’re located in the U.S., it’s a pretty safe bet that you’re facing some of this season’s arctic temperatures. While many horses are snuggled in cozily under multiple layers of warm clothing, others, like POA gelding KS’s Jammin To The Moon, are taking full advantage of the wintery weather.Kathryn Schley of Austin, MN. re-cently took her 4-year-old gelding named “Buzz” out for some morning exercise in the freshly fallen snow. Al-though Buzz appears to be a talented, little driver, Schley doesn’t typically show in competitions. She and Buzz drive for their own personal enjoy-ment.

“I trained Buzz myself,” Schley says. “I’m not a professional trainer. We are just out exercising on a beautiful Minnesota winter morning and hav-ing fun in [my] video. It’s amazing that these little easy entry carts are able to just glide through the snow, provided that it is only up to 6” deep.”HarrisIn the video posted to Schley’s Face-book page, Buzz appears to be hav-ing a ball bounding through the snow with his passenger in tow.“This is a Kingston cart I’m using here with just the bicycle tires it orig-inally came with,” she says. “We’ve been through a lot of different ter-rain. I would say mud is harder to cart through than the snow. With the snow and cold you just have to be careful for icy spots, which we do get

a lot of here.”“I would choose driving in the snow or [on] outside trails over arena driv-ing. Going in circles can get boring for both Buzz and myself. We did compete in a futurity class a couple years ago, and I didn’t like the way the cart pulled in their sand.”

Not a Secret AnymoreCR POA’s is proud to introduce

“CA Secret Impulsive Star”! And add him to our stable of outstanding stallions. Secret was bred by CA & Teresa Good of Diagonal IA. Shown as a weanling at the International Futurity in 2012and placed 2nd out of a very large class. Secret was offered for sale at the International Sale and that is where it all began for Secret and CR POA’s. We purchased Secret at that time shipped him home to Oregon and the following spring of 2013 his show career began in Oregon and the Northwest. Immediately Secret caught the eyes of the judges. Unfortunately we were only able to show him at two shows due to illness. Even with only two shows under his belt Secret racked up 2 Jr. Champions and one Grand Champion Stallion. Then on to the International 2013 Futurity in Des Moines, Iowa and the magic was there, International Yearling Stallion Champion! A fantastic end to Secret’s first year at CR POA’s and CARRUSS Ranch, Lebanon, OR. We would like to thank CA and Teresa Good for breeding Secret and allowing us to own this elegant colt. Secret’s sire is “Ima Impulsive Star” and his dam is “Sheza Secret Romance”, obviously a magical mating. We would also like to thank Larry Meyers for introducing “CR Star Kid” to us Secret’s grandsire and bless-ing us with leasing him for 2013. Larry introduced us to CA & Teresa Good, another blessing.Carol & I met while attending collage together at Cal State University Chico, CA. We were both seeking degrees in Agriculture. Working together on various projects we became close friends, fell in love and mar-ried in 1987. We have raised QH and Appaloosa’s along with sheep, hogs, cattle, dogs and cats. We relocat-ed to Oregon in 1992 and while Carol was searching for a small riding horse found the POA’s and a new love affair began. We currently are standing 3 foundation QH and 3 POA Stallions, we maintain approximately 40 brood-mares, with the balance or our herd yearling on up. CR POA’s is the largest POA producers west of the Rockies. We provide stud service and foals from coast to coast and border to border, and then some. Foals from our program can be found in Canada and Mexico as well. We are working on expanding our buyers’ world-wide.Our purpose is to produce a utility Pony that conforms to our ideal specification; a combination of correct conformation, intelligence, a kind disposition and performance with the beautiful POA color. We feel that a balance of the above traits is all in the selection and breeding, but success is ultimately in the hands-on day-to-day training. As breeders we are always striving for each foal crop to be better than their parents.CR POA’s thanks all the POA families in producing, training and riding POA’s for both children and adults to enjoy as a family!

POA News with Becky SolbergCourtesy Equine Chronicle

Who ever thought that a $800 yearling would go on to become one of the POA’s leading All-Around pleasure ponies? His breeder Melissa Slayton did. “I always knew that Superman would go far if he got into the right hands!” Slayton sold RPR’s Impulsive Superman, aka “Manny,” in the POA International Sale back in 2010. “He was always very quiet and even, as a baby, moved well with a natural low headset.”The lucky buyer, Jessica Drish, from Iowa wasn’t even looking to buy a stallion that year. “He just caught our eye.” Drish says. “I never thought the yearling we bought in 2010 would have such a successful show career and turn into the amazing pony he is!”His trainer, Jena Despenas, from Ma-son City, IA has had him since he was a two-year-old. “He’s the quietest [most] easygoing guy you could ever meet,” Despenas says. “I have been known to take him from his stall to turnout without a halter – just my hand under his neck. You honestly would never know he is a stud.”EC-Gold-Gulf-Coast-2013-banner-300x100So what’s he like to ride and train you might ask. “Every ride is amazing! He’s so willing and gives his all every ride,” Despenas says. “He’s the same pony every ride.”This year, Manny and Despenas won one of POAC’s most prestigious trophies, The McClaren. The Mc-Claren was held in September at the Reichert Celebration in Fort Worth, Texas. This was only the second time Despenas had shown in this class.“I’d just had my baby girl three weeks before the Reichert, so he had had some time off,” Despenas says “I gained so much respect for him af-ter that. He came out and rode bet-ter than ever. There aren’t too many horses I have encountered that can

do that.” As for the class, “I felt con-fident going in, but it’s always in the judges’ hands. I just want-ed a great ride, and he defi-nitely gave me that! I knew this was my last year show-ing him, so I really wanted to enjoy it. He definitely holds a special place in my heart, which made the win even more special.”There was one per-son missing in the stands on the evening of The M c C l a r -en, his o w n e r . Due to ob l i g a -t i o n s with her w o r k , Drish, w h o is a v e t e r -inarian, was unable to attend t h e Reichert Celebration. “After what seemed like an eternity, I was on the phone with a friend as they called the placings. I was shocked and in disbe-lief as they called him first under all four judges! I owe all of his success to Jena Despenas, JLD Performance Horses, and her family.”When asked about what the future holds for Manny, Drish had this to say, “We’re hoping he makes a name for himself in the future as an up-coming POA sire. Although he will be spending a large portion of 2014 in the breeding shed, he may make an appearance in the show ring this summer as well.”Congratulations to RPR’s Impulsive Superman, Jessica Drish, and Jena Despenas on all of his accomplish-ments.RPR’s Impulsive Superman’s 2013 Accomplishments

SUPREME CHAMPION

SUPREME CHAMPION

In December of 2001 we purchased RBR Tsunami Buns as a yearling from the Bagwell’s of River Bend Ranch in Oklahoma. My mom bought him as a pony for her to start and hopefully my sister or I would show him when he was older. My mom rode him as a three year old at all of the Iowa shows and the Midwest Regional that year.

The next year he became my sister Morgan’s junior pony. He had a great year with her by placing 5th in the National year end awards in Junior Hunter Under Saddle, and in helping her win a multiple pony High Point Saddle in Hinckley, MN.

In the spring of 2007 we sold my senior pony, and Tsunami became mine to show. We didn’t attend many POA shows our first year; I mostly worked with Tsunami on jumping and we went to some small hunter/jumper shows and even tried some cross country. I soon found out that Tsunami loved to jump, and so did I.

The next year we were ready to go for the POA shows, it turned out to be a very good year. Tsunami and I won our first Regional class that year in Winona, MN; we were also high point non-timed 13-18 for the Iowa year-end awards. In 2009 and 2010 we continued to show and really started focusing on reining and

western riding. A highlight of 2009 was winning all four of the jumping classes at the Midwest Regional. During the summer of 2010 we decided to start gaming Tsunami and try to get his supreme by the time I aged out in 2011.

We attended my last International in 2011; it was a great one to end on. Tsunami placed in many classes, including showmanship, reining, and two top three placing’s in the fences classes. But our highlight was the Versatility competition; we had participated in 2009, but hadn’t placed. This time we were back and ready to go! We ended up placing in all four events and ending up 3rd overall.

But our year was not over, we heard the Reichert Celebration counted as regional points, so down to Fort Worth we went. We ended up placing in many classes and ended up Reserve high point 13-18 girl one pony/one rider. We also received enough points to achieve Tsunami’s ROM Timed, making him a Supreme Champion. That was my very last POA show with him.

I can truly say he is one of the most versatile ponies out there; and I am truly a lucky girl to have gotten to show such a great pony!

News from the Texas POACby LaRena Phillips

President, Texas POA

Howdy from the great state of Texas! We are having a blast gearing up for our HUGE celebration this year as Texas POAC celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2014! We concluded a great year in 2013 with a fabulous trail ride and banquet at the Grasshopper Ranch in Palmer, Tex-as. A delicious catered BBQ lunch was served by local caterer, Appleton Cater-ing (who is also a middle school princi-pal) later stated, “That was the most re-spectable group of young people I have been around in quite some time. Respect-ful and mannerly, ‘yes sir’ and ‘thank you’ came naturally from all of them. Very refreshing to be around such polite and friendly young people.” Way to GO POA for developing great leaders and respect-able young people! This is what POA is all about! The Texas POA Club is super proud of all the exhibitors that showed with us in 2013. We have pulled together, made new friends, enjoyed old friend-ships and most of all, had a BLAST! Congratulations to all the winners, Texas Top 10 Riders, Special Award Winners and EVERYONE that showed with us

in 2013! You all made 2013 a great year for Texas POA! Our club has been hard at work, selecting prizes, organizing schedules and planning a party for the kickoff of the 50th Anniversary Celebra-tion , the Mid-America Regional Show in April. Starting off with an action packed PROMO on April 4th this will settle you in for a great ride at the Mid-America the following two days, April 5th and 6th. We have lots of great fun events planned that include a party on Saturday Evening that you won’t want to miss. This event will be held at the Hopkins County Civic Center in Sulphur Springs, Texas. That isn’t all for Texas for this year though, we have a complete IBC Series as well planned that starts immediately after the Mid-America. April 26th will be the kick of date for the very popular IBC Series in 2014. We will offer some of the new NOVICE classes at all our shows this year and will have special awards in all division again for 2014! Open riders, will have a chance to win a saddle as well! We like to extend an open invite to all to at-tend one of our shows this year. Come Lasso Up Some Fun with us at Texas POA! See our website for all the details at www.TexasPOA.com.
