P&O Maritime is an award-winning provider of maritime solutions to governments, busi-

nesses and organisations around the world. By constantly striving to bring the highest level of service to

their customers, and by takingan “uncompromising approach” to health, safety and the environment,

P&O Maritime have established themselves as a leader in the maritime services industry.

Originally founded in 1968 as P&O Offshore Services, an Australian subsidiary of the P&O

Group, the company initially serviced the offshore energy industry in Australia and South-East Asia.

After renaming themselves P&O Maritime, they experienced rapid growth throughout the 1970s and

onward, as the business expanded their services to include ownership and management of specialist

vessels, offshore renewables, river barging, chartering, port services and world class logistics solutions.

LOYALTY ALL AROUND

Today, the company is split up into three regions: Australasia, Middle East/Africa/Europe, and South America. Despite cover-ing the globe, however, P&O’s services re-main tailored and specified to their locales in which they’re stationed. This is one of the many factors that set the company apart. “It’s that unique difference of what we do,” says Regional Operating Director Peter Wilkes. “We’re not in the mainstream global transport business of carrying product from one country to another. We’re unique in that we’re global, but each one of our businesses

is very local-oriented.” P&O Maritime have also involved them-selves in the marine sciences and research fields. While working for the Australian Government Antarctic Division, they utilise their flagship vessel – the Aurora Australis– to aide in research taking place on Antarc-tica. Peter explains that it’s an interesting sector to work within, as they gather new in-formation on ocean currents, global warm-ing and greenhouses gasses. “It’s quite a niche business, doing marine sciences with a lot of over-the-side work,” he

says. “It’s a lot of high-tech, environmental monitoring studies, and it’s a really interest-ing part of the shipping industry to be in, because we know that a lot of the govern-ment and international policies and drivers come directly from the research our ship is involved in.”

In 2014, P&O Maritime Services were honoured for their commitment to their em-ployees’ wellbeing at the bi-annual Seacare Awards, which recognise successful health and safety initiatives in the maritime in-dustry. P&O Maritime took home several

awards, including the Category 1 - Work-place Health and Wellbeing Initiative Award for their 10,000 Steps and Beyondinitiative, which challenged their global network to in-crease their daily physical activity by walking 10,000 steps every day. “We’ve had a health and well-being pro-gram that’s been operating in the Australia region over the last four years,” says Injury Management Advisor Manisha Bhargava. “This award is based on the past two years of that program, in which we initiated a rather large initiative which was the Global Corpo-rate Challenge (GCC).” “The Global Corporate Challenge really

was a great way to involve both seafarers and shore-based staff together in a health and wellbeing initiative,” she continues. “We had some really good success. It was a trial pro-gram that we did in 2013, just in Australia, and recently in 2014, we released it globally so it was made available to our other regions as well.” The goal of this program was to get both seafarers and office-based staff to become more active, increasing the well-being of the company as a whole. Starting with the trial program in 2013, the GCC had a total of

70 participants competing in teams across P&O Maritime internationally. Each par-ticipant was given anaccelerometer to track their steps. In 2014, the program doubled to 140 participants and resulted in P&O Mari-time finishing 10th globally in the Transport and Logistics sector. “At the time, it was a 111 day challenge, basically 16 weeks,” Manisha says. “Par-ticipants were divided into teams of seven, where you had a team captain, and you were competing not only against other teams within the company, but also against teams

from around the globe as well.” Of course, competing globally with their other offices – including their seafarers away from home – meant that the program had to be one focused on accessibility. “The beauty of it is that it’s accessible from anywhere,” Manisha adds. “As long as you’ve got an inter-net connection, you can access the program. This means for our seafarers away at sea that when they were within internet range they could login to the system and upload their steps.” 10,000 steps a day was a goal determined

by looking at the latest research in regards to the Heart Foundation and their recom-mendations on exercise levels for people on a daily basis. In addition to the accelerom-eter and competition aspects of the GCC, the program also offers a multitude of other tools associated with health and wellness for employees to use to their benefit. “It has a lot of interesting and interac-tive programs around weight-loss, goal set-ting, nutrition, energy, and sleep,” Mani-sha adds.”Due to its multifaceted and user friendly approach, we found it was a very ef-

-fective program.”

In 2014, P&O Maritime Services also went home with two more Seacare Awards− one for the organization itself and the other a personal award for Bhargava−winning the Category 6a (Organization) and 6b (Indi-vidual) for Rehabilitation and Return to Work Management. “As an organisation, P&O Maritime has invested in having a full-time resource avail-able for injury management and to run the early intervention programs, health and well-being programs, and anything else relating to workers’ compensation,” Manisha says. “Our biggest asset, and our biggest cost, is our manning, therefore our focus has to be on that to best manage our people,” adds. Peter.”The cost and the health and wellbeing of those people is critical to us, from corpo-rate responsibility and from a purely opera-tional side.” P&O Maritime have been keenly focused on early intervention− the first stage in the Rehab and Return to Work program. By practicing an open policy, they encourage their employees to come forward about any

health concerns they have, be it a physical or psychological. “Some of the outcomes of this particular program have been that in the last two years, we have had a 100 percent return-to-work rate in terms of our workers compensation injuries sustained – which is fantastic, espe-cially in this particular industry,” Manisha explains. Through their dedication to employee safety and wellness, P&O Maritime certain-ly stand out as an employer that cares deeply for its staff. “We strongly believe that our employees enjoy working for P&O,” Peter says. “And we are an employer of choice because of this type of effort that we go to, to ensure that it’s beyond just a workplace. I know our em-ployees recognize that as one of the standout things of P&O.”

THE FUTURE

In regards to the future of P&O Mari-time, Peter says the company is looking to carry on their proud history – which has now spanned nearly two centuries – whilst at the same time continuing to expand responsibly. He explains that their goal is to become the “top choice” for clients in several industries. “We do have that long 170 years of tra-dition,” he says. “And in the last two years, we’ve embarked on this long-term sustain-able growth.” It’s clear to see that P&O Maritime have

their eyes set on the future, moving forward with health and wellness initiatives, as well as expanding their business horizons. Above all else, they will remain committed to a stan-dard of excellence for which the company has become known and recognized. “We’re aiming to become one of the top players in the port marine, oil and gas off-shore businesses, as well as continuing with our government services, and striving to-wards our focus of excellence,” Peter con-cludes.
