Grants secured for Leeton High School We have been fortunate to secure two grants to support school initiatives, the first being a $15,000 Sustainable Schools grant as part of the Rural and Remote Network initiative which will be used to make the area around our Hands on Learning shed productive and sustainable. We will use the money to purchase a new water tank and to cover associated plumbing costs, to establish a native garden and bird feeders around the shed and to level and grass the area. Thanks to Mr Glenn Duggan (Deputy Principal, Teaching and Learning) for his leadership of the grant process. Year and Wellbeing Assemblies This year we have included a Monday morning assembly for each year, run by the Year Advisor, to be provided with notes, information, reminders and also time to set some cohort and personal goals for the week. Friday Wellbeing assemblies are held every three weeks and run by Year Advisors. These assemblies allow for time to explore wellbeing issues and to discuss strategies to support wellbeing. This time can also be used to view survey responses from sources such as the Tell Them From Me surveys to make improvements for better wellbeing. SOUTH WEST ZONE SWIMMING CARNIVAL

On Wednesday 19th February Leeton High School hosted the South West High Schools Zone Swimming Carnival. 45 swimmers and a further 35 helpers attended, everyone representing the school proudly. The day was unexpectedly cool for February in Leeton, but our students performed well despite this. Leeton High School finished 2nd overall to a very strong Murrumbidgee Regional High School team, but well ahead of the rest of the field. This was a true reflection of their effort and application throughout the day. Our relay teams performed particularly well, with nine teams qualifying for the Riverina meet. To add to this, 14 individual athletes also qualified for the event. Special mention has to go to our two Age Champions Connor Holden (12 year boys) and Dion DeMamiel (17-19 years boys). We also had 4 students claim Runners-Up honours including Ruby Miller (13 year girls), Tom Cooper (13 years boys), Raith Henman (14 years boys) and Jhie Deaton (16 years boys). Congratulations to all competitors on the day. Our officials and time keepers should also be commended on a job well done!

OPEN BOYS CRICKET Last Wednesday the 26th of February, the Leeton High School Open Boys cricket side travelled to Narrandera High School to participate in the first two rounds of the Davidson Shield Competition. The first game saw Leeton High take on Narrandera High. Leeton High batted first and belted 2 for 144 from 20 overs with Blake McDonald (61 not out) and Dan Hillam (53) starring with the bat. In reply Narrandera High scored 7 for 103 from their 20 overs, with Dan Hillam (1 for 4), Emerson Cody (1 for 5), Blake McDonald (1 for 1), Braith Schmetzer (1 for 9) and Jack Coelli (2 for 5) all bowling well. After taking the points in the first game, Leeton High then took on Yanco Ag. The Ag batted first and scored a respectable 6 for 128 off their 20 overs. Blake McDonald, Jack Coelli and Dan Hillam were the pick of the bowlers, but Emerson Cody got the big wicket of Tom Bartter who has smashed 156 in the previous game. Leeton High’s run chase got off to a great start with Thomas Allen whacking a couple of boundaries and taking 12 off the second over. Once Thomas got out wickets kept on falling and Leeton High was bundled out for 54. Leeton High’s sportsmanship was fantastic throughout the day all boys gave it their best. A massive thankyou to Scott McDonald for driving the bus and scoring throughout the day and also to Ryan Mahalm for helping out it was greatly appreciated.

SCIENCE STUDY DAY On Tuesday the 18th of February Year 12 Chemistry participated in an excursion to CSU Wagga, to be shown and demonstrated the possibilities within Chemistry. The day was an overall success as everyone completed chemistry related activities such as titrations, colourimetry, atomic absorption spectroscopy and comparing the pH levels of different types of acids and bases. The chemistry labs had a range of new technologies and equipment to help with the units we are studying at school. At the conclusion of the HSC Study Day activities we went on a tour of the CSU Campus and saw some of the learning facilities and common areas such as the library. It was a good day and everyone had a lot of fun. Noah Keene (Year 12 student)
