second – was a governmentfarm. “(It) was mainly used toget an idea of what worked, sothat was the early 1800s tomid-1800s,” Ms Pitman says.
“There was grazing stock, and they had horses there.”
She says that in 1858 a housewas built on the farm to beused as the summer residencefor then governor Sir RichardMacDonnell, which becameknown as Old GovernmentHouse.
The farm became a nationalpark in 1891, following somecontroversy. “The governmentwas going to sell the land off forfarming and housing in the late1800s,” Ms Pitman says. “At thetime there was already govern-ment staff managing the landand they could see the value ofkeeping it for the public.
“So there was a lot of cam-paigning going on in Parlia-
ment and the communityagainst it. The public is stillvery passionate about Belair.”
Remnants remain in thepark of an old farm house, nearan area called Gold EscortGround. “That was the firsthouse in the park.”
Gold Escort Ground got itsname because it was the camp-ing location for gold escorts –people moving gold betweenMelbourne and Adelaide.
These days the park attractsabout 250,000 visitors eachyear.
The Belair Memories exhibi-tion will be at the Old Govern-ment House gardens on July 9,10am-2pm. Other activities tocelebrate Park of the Monthinclude Kaurna cultural walks, starting at Old GovernmentHouse, on July 9, 10.45am-noon, and Nature Play SA’scubby building event, CubbyTown, at the adventure play-ground on July 20 and 21,10am-3pm.
