Spring Is in the Air and Summer Is Not Far Away

I t’s hard to believe, but the tropi-cal South Florida heat is with us again. The sun is burning down

and the air conditioners are humming at full blast. While we are trying to decide between pool or beach, our kids are already looking forward to their summer break, and we are hur-riedly making last minute arrange-ments for summer camps and family vacations.

In the midst of all this, Spring is passing us by and Mother’s Day has “sneaked up” on us. Let’s take a little pause and honor our mothers (and our wives) for they are always working hard to care for us, look after us, and pamper us. Let’s pamper them for a change!

Have a fantastic Mother’s Day celebration!

Sincerely,

Sven BudzischSven Budzisch

Summer Camp June 20th to July14th

I nternational Dance Academy is gearing up for a summer camp program that is Simply the Best! Our one of a kind fine arts experience offers all levels of ballet, pre-pointe, pointe, jazz, strength and conditioning, cho-

reography, voice, sewing and crafting.

Known for our exceptionally high caliber ballet programming during the school year, IDA expands to a full-scale fine arts dance camp during the summer. Don’t delay as Camp IDA closes out on an annual basis in our fully equipped and superior dance complex which includes sprung flooring, mirrors and multi-level ballet barres. With differentiated teaching, IDA’s boutique environment offers a less intimidating yet professional atmosphere for new dancers and advanced dancers looking to quickly perfect their techniques, round out their dance education, make amazing friendships, and have spectacular fun! We accept dancers from age 6 and up, with no prior dance experience necessary.

Camper placement is based on age and level. We welcome dancers of all levels, from Beginners through Advanced. Our goal is to share methods and technique to help dancers progress to the next level as stronger all around performers. Dancers will improve their technical skill, flexibility and strength. Parents are inspired and comforted by our detailed approach to each child.

A typical day at the camp includes morning ballet class with an emphasis on conditioning and technique, followed by a show stopping Broadway jazz class. After lunch the dancers are excited for their afternoon fine arts extravaganza with professional sewing class, voice training and crafting. Dancers are taught music appreciation and encouraged to choreograph and improvise their own dances, which are shown at the final, end of camp performance for parents and friends. Costumes are stunning and backdrops painted to showcase the progress achieved by all dancers.

Artistic Director Deborah Buttner leads Camp IDA with a hands-on approach and the finest teaching staff. Ms. Buttner is an acclaimed ballerina with international experience and recognition. She is a graduate of the prestigious London Studio Center Classical Ballet program, trained in both South Africa and England, and toured the British Isles and America performing numerous lead roles. IDA’s philosophy provides each dancer with individual attention to meet the needs of those newly interested in fine arts all the way to those preparing for audition success.

Summer Intensive Program: IDA offers a two week summer dance intensive program in August. The Summer Intensive helps dancers quickly get back into top condition for the new season - which is full of incredible Nutcracker mania.

The Nutcracker Auditions: Open auditions at IDA are held mid-September, followed by full cast rehearsals to prepare for our spectacular full-scale theater production in December. This is when IDA makes dreams come true for all levels of dancers!

If you register for Camp IDA before May 31, 2011, you will receive two free tickets to our spring performance of Coppelia at the Miramar Cultural Center on June 10. If you register for both Camp IDA and the Summer Intensive Program by May 31, then you will receive four free tickets to Coppelia. After experiencing Coppelia, it will become clear why Camp IDA is Simply the Best!

Plantation Businessman Donates Shoes to Women in Need

The women who come to Women in Distress looking for a place to stay sometimes leave their abusive partners with nothing but the clothes on the back and the shoes on their feet. If they leave in the night they might come

in slippers. Others just have a pair of old flip-flops because their husbands won’t give them enough money for something better. To get a job or even just a boost of self-confidence, they sometimes need an upgrade in footwear.

That’s where Robert Feldman, owner of Feldman Pedorthics and Footcare Boutique, steps in. The Plantation Pedorthist has collected and delivered close to 2000 pairs of new and gently used shoes for those in need since 2006.

Recently, he planned to make his latest donation; delivering several dozen pair of shoes to Women In Distress of Broward County, which currently operates a 62 bed emergency shelter. In April, they planned to expand to 100 beds at a new facility in Deerfield Beach, along with an outreach center and a thrift store. Feldman said making the shoes avail-able to women in need is vital towards helping them get back on their feet. “We think

healthy footwear is really more of a necessity then a luxury and it is one that we want to offer as many women as we can,” said Feldman.

Previously, Feldman has donated and helped fit shoes for the residents of the Broward Outreach Center in Hollywood. He spent hours at the shelter, talking with the residents, and helping to fit their feet with a selection of new shoes he donated from his business.

For years, he has also col-

lected and then shipped shoes to Soles4Soul a Nashville-based charity that collects shoes from around the country. The charity distributes these shoes to people in need, regardless of race, religion, class, or any other criteria. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away over 13 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes. The shoes have been distrib-uted to people in over 125 countries, including Kenya, Thailand, Nepal and the United States.

Feldman says one of the most important part of his business is his unique fitting process, and helping people understand what a Pedorthist even does. “Pedorthics is the design, manufacture, modification and fit of footwear, including foot orthoses, to alleviate problems caused by disease, overuse, congenial defect or injury. It is footwear, carefully fitted, to relieve or accommodate temporary or permanent foot problems,” Feldman said. “People also don’t realize that footwear designed to alleviate foot pain, can be very stylish and often look so “mainstream” that others aren’t even aware that a foot problem exists.

Feldman Pedorthics and Footcare Boutique is located at100 NW 82nd Avenue, Suite 204. For more information call them at 954-212-1776. They are open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. and 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday’s.

Sophie Lawson, 27, used to be a lifeguard growing up in the United Kingdom. Now living in South Florida, she is hoping to get a similar job for the summer, but not before she brushes up on her technique. That’s why she was

one of several dozen people who jumped into the pool recently for one of two American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Classes at the Plantation Aquatics Complex. “I am really kind of renewing my skills,” she said.

The city offered lifeguard training classes over Spring Break at the Plantation Aquatics Complex, which is located in Central Park. According to Mark Hartman, the Aquatics Manager of the Swimming Complex, Plantation has a good reputation when it comes to this sort of skill. “We are one of the principal pools in Broward in Red Cross Lifeguard training,” he said.

The training and certification was split into two groups. The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course drew more than one dozen participants. The class, which is part of a national program, goes through all elements of lifeguarding, including first aid, CPR, and use of the AED equipment. Participants had to be 15 years of age or older, and be strong

swimmers. They worked both in the water and out under the watchful eye of Aquatic Center instructors. Those who made it through came away with a very critical skill.

“They can lifeguard anywhere in the state after successful competition,” Hartman said. The other program was the Spring Break Jr. Lifeguard Course, called “Guardstart”

which was open to students 11-14 years of age. The course teaches lifesaving rescues and leadership skills, as well as fitness and professional development. A dozen students turned out for the American Red Cross pro-gram, which was not for lifeguard certification, but instead serves as a pre-training program

“These are folks who are strong swimmers and are interested in becoming a lifeguard when they turn 15,” said Hartman.

The Plantation Aquatic Complex offers instruction for all ages, from 6 months to adults. They also offer an array of water programs, including play areas, water polo, water aerobics, swim teams, Olympic caliber dive team, and more. Both courses ran March 14 – 18th, but it is not the only time the city offers the course. It is held ten times during the year, with the exception of December and January.

If you would like to sign up, or need more infor-mation, call the pool office at 954-452-2525.

Strategically placed shade trees can add tremendous value to your outdoor living spaces, especially during the hot summer. Not

only does it feel up to 20 degrees cooler in the shade than in the direct sun, but the shade environment creates terrific opportunities for under plantings of colorful foliage plants that cannot tolerate full sun. Additionally, trees provide a natural habitat for birds and squirrels and produce oxygen to help cleanse the air we breathe. Economically, properly selected trees can begin to reduce your home cooling costs within a few years and a fully grown tree canopy can reduce cooling costs by up to 40%.

Top Shade Trees for South Florida. Eight trees stand out due to their exceptional

growth characteristics, low maintenance and reasonable prices. Moderate size trees (up to 20 feet)

▸ Japanese Fern: Deep green, exotic fern-like leaves, naturally symmetrical canopy, great branch structure for hanging orchids or baskets.

▸ Magnolia: Dark green, glossy leaves with copper underside is truly unique. Large fragrant white flowers during the spring and sporadically throughout the year.

▸ Cassia: Two varieties to choose from, both with bright yellow flowers. In bloom much of the year.

▸ Bottlebrush: Distinctive light bark. Flowers are 6” long cylinders of scarlet blossoms.

Large Trees (40 feet and beyond) ▸ Royal Poinciana/Jacaranda: Light canopy withstands high winds and allows grass to grow underneath. Spectacular flowering in the spring and sporadically throughout the year.

▸ Live or Laurel Oak: Stately historical tree that adds beauty and grace to any landscape. Very dense canopy.

▸ Bulnesia: Tropical glossy leaves with a complex buttercup flower. Very fast grower. ▸ Gumbo Limbo: Distinctive reddish exfoliating bark. Interesting branching has lots of character.

All of these trees are available at Flamingo Road Nursery and other local nurseries. A well-rooted 8 foot specimen should run $150 - $200 in a 25 gallon pot and installa-tion is approximately $100. For $250 - $300, you would be hard pressed to find a better long-term investment that also provides instant gratification during these dog days of summer!

During the month of May, take advantage of the Blooming Bucks promotion at Flamingo Road Nursery. Here’s how it works: For every $10 of nursery purchases made in May, you will earn $1 in Blooming Bucks that are redeemable during the month of September. These “same as cash” Blooming Bucks will save you up to 50% off the cost of your future purchases. Now that’s a deal!!

Flamingo Road Nursery is located at 1655 Flamingo Road, just one mile south of I-595 on the west side of Flamingo Road. Open daily 8 am – 6 pm. For information, call 954-476-7878 or visit www.FlamingoRoadNursery.com.

A n evening of glamour, shopping and fashion helped raise badly needed

funds and awareness for a good cause recently in Plantation. More than one hundred people turned out for the first ever “Passion for Fashion” event to benefit The Huntington’s Disease Society of America. “It was an extraordinary event for women,” said Karen Hillman of Plantation, who organized the event.

Passion for Fashion, the ultimate “Pretty in the City” event was held Friday, April 1 at Jacaranda Country Club in Plantation. Guests enjoyed an evening loaded with almost everything a woman could want. They indulged in delicious hors d’oeuvres and drinks while enjoying a runway fashion show. Exhibitors displayed clothing, jew-elry, gifts, skin care products and consultations, mini-manicures and hand massages. There was shoe showcase and a unique exhibit called the “Living Fashion Portrait.” Live models posed in pictures frames, after being styled by four South Florida hair and makeup artists.

The sold-out event, which also included live entertainment and a silent auction, was a fun evening for a serious cause. All funds were to benefit The Huntington’s Disease Society of America, with good reason. “So many people have never heard of this disease,” said Hillman, a local fine art photographer.

Hillman and her family have first-hand knowledge of what Huntington’s Disease can do. Three of her husband’s cousins have the disorder, a devastating, hereditary, degenerative brain disorder for which there is no cure. “It has been very hard on them,”

said Hillman. More than 250,000 Americans have HD or are at risk of inheriting the disease from an affected parent.

Early symptoms affect cognitive ability and mobility and eventually the person is unable to care for him or herself. Hillman said because of that, sufferers often withdraw and become depressed. HD affects males and females equally and crosses all ethnic and racial boundaries. Hillman created a “Passion for Fashion” as a way to help and raise awareness. “This was a way for me to funnel my energy into something positive and try and do something to help people with HD and their families. I also want to educate the public about the disease,” she said.

If you’d like to help fight Huntington’s Disease, please contact Karen Hillman at 954-520-3221 or email her at [email protected].

What’s in store in the world of arts and culture in Plantation? The city is getting set to host its

annual arts event to help spread the word about all that is going on. The Arts of Plantation, A Cultural Celebration, will be held Thursday, May 12th from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., at the Plantation Hoffman Library and Historical Museum Campus. Ken Boyce, the Superintendent of Recreation for the City of Plantation, said the event was created to highlight the variety of cultural groups, programs and individual artists that enhance the quality of life in Plantation.

“It provides a venue for the public to see what is available in the way of cultural activities in our community,” said Boyce.

The Arts of Plantation,  A Cultural Celebration was created in 2007. Since then, hundreds of people have turned out each year to check out the various cultural art offerings, including art and dance programs, cultural groups, museums and more. This year, the event will feature a Children’s Dinosaur Dig, a display by the Plantation Art Guild, several artists creating and/or talking about their work, live music by local musicians, a Florida Pirate Camp with pirate sword fights throughout the evening, a Puppet Show by the Plantation Puppeteers, a Seminole Indian exhibit & talk, free refreshments and more.

Guests will also be able to take in the Planta-tion Historical Museum’s on-going exhibit called

“Plantation: Then & Now”. The exhibit, which will run through July 2, features photos and artifacts from the city’s past, and present, including Fred Peters’ plans to create a Dream City, and a timeline history of life in Plantation. There is also a promotional film created by the Plantation Chamber of Commerce and the city in the 1960’s that was designed to entice people to move to the growing city.

Boyce said Plantation residents of all ages will enjoy The Arts of Plantation, a Cultural Celebration. “The variety of presentations and displays will appeal to those with a keen interest in the arts as well as those who are looking for in an inexpensive event for their whole family,” he said.

The Arts of Plantation; a Cultural Celebration will be held Thursday, May 12th from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., at the Plantation Hoffman

Library and Historical Museum Campus, located 501 North Fig Tree Lane. At only 13 years old, Michael Rollins is proving to be a fundraiser on an adult level. Rollins, a 7th grader at Plantation

Middle School, recently surpassed his own efforts and raised thousands of dollars to help battle autism, a cause close to his heart.

Michael raised $4,000 for the Walk Now for Autism Speaks which was held April 9th on the campus of Nova Southeastern University in Davie, in front of the Alvin Sherman Library. Autism Speaks is a family-friendly event held at locations across the country that is an important source of funding for autism-related research. Last year, Michael raised $3,000, making him one of the top three fundraisers at NSU. “I am just glad to be part of the walk,” Michael said. There is not a cure yet, But I hope there will be soon.”

Michael’s fundraising is motivated by a love of fam-ily. He is one of four brothers, and two of his siblings struggle with autism. He said having two siblings with autism can be trying at times, and people don’t always understand the effects of the disorder. That’s why in addition to raising money, he also hopes to raise awareness and education.

Autism is the fastest growing developmental dis-ability in the United States and Rollins is only too aware of the statistics. One in every 110 children

are diagnosed, and one in every 70 boys. His family has taken part in the walk for the past seven years, always making a donation to the cause. But it wasn’t until two years ago, that Michael decided to do more.

He raised money by composing a letter that he sent out to family, friends and his parents co-workers. In the letter, he explained the statistics, his mission and what life was like for him with two brothers with autism. “I have seen what autism can do and how hard it can be. Also, there is no cure and not a lot of money from the government to help find a cure,” he said.

In addition to fundraising, he also spent part of his summer volunteering at The Mailman Segal Center’s Baudhuin Preschool, located on the main campus of Nova Southeastern University, is an internationally recognized, model program for children with autism spectrum disorders. He help create projects for the youngsters, and shared his time and attention with them. He also worked as a volunteer at the walk, and encourages everyone to get involved. “You know how bad cancer, and AIDS is. This is just as bad and we need to find a cure,” he said.

Plantation Youngster Steals Show as “Annie”

Think Amanda Kopelman, 7, of Plantation had butterflies in her stomach before her first leading role as

“Annie” on stage? Think again. The University School second grader says she simply loves being on stage. “I love it because I get to act in front of a lot of people,” she said.

Kopelman recently had one of the leading roles in Dance Conservatory of Florida’s production of “Annie Jr.”, which ran May 1 at the Miniaci Theater at Nova Southeastern University. Several hundred friends and family members turned out for two performances of the Broadway classic, with two separate casts.  The 4:30pm show featured Ella Noriega of Davie as Annie. Noriega, 8, has participated in three musical productions and has been taking vocal lessons, flamenco dance, ballet, tap and acting classes since she was three years old. “I love sharing the stage with such a talented cast,” she said.

The 6:30pm show featured Kopelman in the lead role.  A student at the Dance Conservatory of Florida since she was 2 1/2 years old, Kopelman has also performed in several of their other performances, including Disney’s Aristocrat Kids, Disney’s Jungle Book Kids, The Nutcracker, and Disney’s Cinderella Kids.

Though she has danced for years, she only recently took up singing by signing up for her school chorus, much to her mother’s surprise. “I have always thought I had natural born entertainer on my hands. I am so proud of her,” said Patty Kopelman.

Even as a new singer, Amanda says her favorite part of the play was belting out the tune “Tomorrow”. She and Noriega beat out close to 50 other children for the lead roles, and were proud of their accomplishments. “I feel good because I get to dance

with all my friends and be on stage,” said Amanda, who dreams of being an artist or teacher when she grows older.

The Plantation-based Dance Conservatory of Florida is focused on providing high-quality dance instruction for ages 2 1/2 through adult. They are led on stage by Artistic Director Melanie Van Hasselt.”I am so proud of my Annie Jr. cast. It has been a pleasure working with all of the children,” Van Hasselt said.

She brings a wealth of experience to the school, having conceived and choreographed numerous productions for profes-sional dance companies, musical theatre productions, conven-tions, touring musical acts, major sporting events and corporate business theatre throughout the United States as well as abroad.  Her choreography has been performed at Carnegie Hall and she was named a top emerging choreographer by the Southeastern Regional Ballet Association.  One of the high moments in her professional career came in 1996, when Ms. Van Hasselt conceived, choreographed and produced all of the entertainment provided by IBM during the Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

The Dance Conservatory of Florida is also offering musical theater summer camps. Session one will run from June 13-July 1

and will perform Disney’s High School Musical Jr. Session 2 will run from July 11-July 29 and will perform Disney’s 101 Dalmation Kids.

The Dance Conservatory of Florida is located at 1017 S. University Drive in Plantation, at the northwest corner of University Drive & Peters Rd. in the Office Max Plaza. For more information, phone them at 954-370-4948 or visit them online at www.danceconservatoryofflorida.net

backyard. The city of Plantation is once again offering and operating a full slate of programs, designed to meet almost any budget. “We have a large variety,” said Plantation Summer Camp Director Kylie Spector.

“This year we have actually included a camp that is a little less expensive than typical day camp.”

The city will offer programs for children ages 5-14, and prices will remain the same as last year. The Adventure Camp at Central Park, for ages 12 to 14, is $1,080 for eight weeks and $560 for four weeks. Since it is for older children, Adventure Camp offers anywhere from two to three field trips per week to destinations like the zoo or the movies, in addition to regular camp activities.

Younger kids, ages 5-11, will enjoy the city’s day camps offered at Volunteer Park, Central Park and the Kennedy Community Center . The cost there is $880 for eight weeks and $460 for four weeks. The hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. to accommodate most work schedules. The campers enjoy a full range of activities, swimming, special guests, crafts and more. The city has room for close to 480 campers. “We’ve come a long way from when we first started doing it,” Spector said. “We try to include everything in our day camps and offer a great variety rather than specializing as much as we used to.”

An even more affordable option is also available at the Jim Ward Community Center. The camp, consisting primarily of trips to the swimming pool, is $600 for Plantation residents for eight weeks and $320 for four weeks.

Last summer, the city outsourced its summer camp programs, but have resumed operations for 2011. Spector said parents will not be disap-pointed in what they have to offer.”We offer the best of everything a camp can offer. We are diligent about hiring great staff with proper backgrounds, and a love of children. We just put together an organized and safe environment,” she said. The Plantation Summer Day Camps will run from June 13-August 5. A lottery was held May 2, but registration forms for camp are still available at the Plantation Community Center, located at 5555 Palm Tree Road; Plantation Central Park,

located at 9151 NW Second St.; Volunteer Park, 12050 W. Sunrise Blvd.; and Jim Ward Community Center, 301 NW 46th Ave.

If your child is more into specialty camps, the city also contracts for services with an equestrian summer camp program, a drama and musical theater program, tennis and golf camp. For more information or to register, call 954-452-2510 or visit www.plantation.org and click on “Plantation Summer Camp” on the bottom half of the page.

it’s their business

F rom t-shirts and tank tops to totes and towels, Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More does it all, and for a lot less than you would think. The com-pany specializes in one-of-a-kind custom designs. And the beauty of it is – you

can print just one.“At Big Frog, anyone can order a quality custom t-shirt at a very reasonable price

with one color or a million colors in any design,” states Nelida Coelho, owner of Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More. “And they can get it done in less than a day.”

That’s because Big Frog is revolutionizing the custom printing industry with its cutting-edge technology called direct-to-garment, or DTG, printing. Basically, DTG printing uses a giant, high resolution ink jet printer to print multi-colored images directly to individual garments or other items.

Unlike traditional screen printing, which essentially just layers paint on top of the fabric, Big Frog’s DTG printing actually imbeds the dye right into the fabric. “Our ink actually becomes part of the fabric,” explains Coelho. “Images and graphics look better and last longer than any other process. Your Big Frog shirts will last through hundreds of washings and still look great.”

Another benefit of DTG printing is that the customer is not limited by color, only their imagination. Big Frog can print over 16 million colors. “Full color prints are possible with photo quality resolution,” says Coelho. “That’s the beauty of our digital process.”

Because everything is digital, customers can submit their designs electronically or create something special using the store’s in-house design center. Big Frog’s design specialists are always on hand to help customers access its enormous inventory of online images and fonts or incorporate personal photographs and company logos into the design.

According to Coelho, “Customers come to the store with an idea of what they want to print for a family reunion, group 5K run, a cruise trip, sports team, or bowl-ing tournament and with the professional help of our graphic designer we can make their idea a reality.”

In addition to its selection of t-shirts in all sizes and styles, from infant’s onesies to

women’s tank-tops, Big Frog also prints aprons, coasters, golf towels, tote bags, puzzles, car flags and mouse pads, although they call those frog pads.

Whether you need one item or one hundred, Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More is always your best value. That’s because Big Frog never charges design or artwork fees, set-up fees or minimums. The store offers 24-hour turnaround, although many items can be printed while you wait.

If those aren’t enough reasons to hop on over to Big Frog, the store is also environ-mentally-friendly. The DTG printer uses water-based ink and no harsh chemicals. The store also offers organic cotton t-shirts.

Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More is conveniently located in the University Shoppes at 1633 South University Drive in Plantation, just north of I-595 and next to IHOP. Store hours are Monday through Friday from 9am until 6pm and Saturday from 9am until 1pm. For more information call (954) 530-5670 or visit www.bigfrog.com/plantation.

So, many clients who work out at my facility refer to themselves as Professional Dieters. They have tried every weight loss plan, scheme, and promise under the sun and

have failed over and over. The following five reasons are usually the reasons why.

reason #1They were not ready to make a full time commitment. Weight loss is at least 50% attitude. Do you want the truth? Do not start a weight

loss program unless you are ready.ADVICE:Do some serious soul searching and figure out what your personal motivation is to

shed the extra weight. The motivation has to come from you. Then you need to recharge that motivation everyday if you are going to make it. I am a firm believer that short term goals are more important than long term goals in this situation.

reason #2You expect miracles. You have unreasonable expectations in regard to how much weight you should be losing. You will end up very disappointed and fall off the wagon.

ADVICE:I know you are looking for that quick fix. It does not exist, even if that infomercial

says you will lose 20 pounds in one hour. Snap out of it. If you stay slow and steady you will be on your way to fantastic end results.

reason #3You’re on a ridiculous plan. If you’re following an extreme weight loss plan (i.e. the cabbage soup diet) where it does not remotely resemble normal eating, there is a good chance you will fail. You may lose some weight but I guarantee it is back on within a week.

ADVICE:A good food plan is based on healthy foods that keep you satisfied and energized, not

cranky. This food adjustment should be a launching pad for long term lifestyle change.

reason #4You had a breakdown and ate two pieces of cake and started falling apart. You tell yourself, “I already ruined everything so I might as well give up.”

ADVICE:Don’t dwell on your mistakes. Instead, shake it off and get right back on track at

your very next meal…..or the next day

reason #5You do not include proper fat-burning, metabolism-raising exercises in the mix.

ADVICE:A fast metabolism is critical to burning fat and managing body weight. The more

muscle you use the more calories you burn. Intervals on the treadmill and multi and single joint weigh training are the best.

May begins a new month of the Biggest Loser Contest. Anyone interested in this four week program of exercise and food coaching to lose 10 to 40 pounds in 4 weeks (that is our weight loss statistically) should call 954-472-9440.

Do you have a flair for the artistic, and a desire to see your photographs in print? If so, grab your camera and start snapping some great photos

around town. The City of Plantation is currently looking for photos for its 2012 city calendar, and they are hoping local residents, and their cameras, can provide what they are looking for. They are sponsoring their first ever Calendar Photo contest, and will be taking entries through July 15 at 5 p.m. They began accepting photos in mid-April.

Would be photographers looking to help out have a wide range of topics to choose from. The city is looking for photos that help capture the experience of life in Plantation in an

endless variety of ways. Photographers are welcome to submit photos in the following categories: city program and services, parks and playgrounds, landscapes, gardens and flora, urban wildlife, pets, people of all ages at work, play or leisure, business, architecture or buildings, culture, entertainment, art, dance, music and shots from around Plantation neighborhoods.

When photographing, keep in mind that the point of the calendar photos is to help showcase what makes living in Plantation special. After the submission deadline, 13 photos will be chosen to be featured in the 2012 Calendar. Other high quality photos not chosen to be featured in the calendar will be awarded Honorable Mention.

The contest is open to amateur photographers (those deriving less than 25% of income from the sale of photography) and student photographers. Information and application forms are available at all city facilities or on the City website at www.plantation.org. and then scroll down to the bottom of the homepage. City of Plantation Hosts Calendar Photo Contest

The College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida recently honored a Plantation

resident with a prestigious honor. Julie Silver Talenfeld, the founder and President of Boardroom Communications, was named one of four 2011 Alumni of Distinction honorees.

Talenfeld now joins a small group of only 112 people selected to receive the honor since its inception in 1970, an impressive feat considering the college boasts more than 24,000 graduates with degrees in advertising, journalism, public relations and telecommunications.

Joining Talenfeld as Distinguished Alumni were Mitchell J. Habib (Advertising, 1982), the Chief Operating Officer of The Nielsen Company , Skip Perez (Journalism, 1969), the recently retired executive editor of The Lakeland Ledger  and CNN News reporter and India Bureau Chief Sara Sidner (Telecommunications, 1985).

“The College of Journalism and Communications holds a place near and dear to my heart,” Talenfeld said. “I graduated with a strong, working knowledge of the print and broadcast news industry, and know my accomplishments would not have come without the great foundation I gained at UF.”

Talenfeld graduated from the college’s Department of Telecommunications in 1984 with a degree in broadcast journalism. She went on to a successful career in television

and radio news, before launching Boardroom Communications at the age of 25. Her company posted 2010 revenues approaching $2 million.

“Julie is one of the most dynamic, forward-thinking and successful communications pro-fessionals in the state of Florida,” said Dr. John Wright II, Dean of the College of Journalism and Communications. “She’s also a wonderful person with an engaging and positive person-ality. I’m proud that she is an alumna of the College of Journalism and Communications and a former student of mine.”

Born in North Miami Beach to veteran CBS television reporter Ben Silver, Talenfeld began her career after college interning and working as a Washington, DC-based writer and associate producer for CNN’s award-winning show, Crossfire. At 22, she founded the Florida Business Report, the first statewide

business radio show. Talenfeld later directed P.R. for a 20-office, $100 million New York investment banking firm.

Talenfeld launched Boardroom soon after. Today, the firm employs 14 people, half of whom also attended the University of Florida. The South Florida Business Journal lists Boardroom among its five largest P.R. firms and a Top-25 Woman-Owned Business. Boardroom has been named “Business of the Year” by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce and South Florida Business Leader Magazine named Julie to its Women Extraordinaire list.

I f you don’t mind getting your hands dirty, or can donate plants, bushes, or other gardening supplies, Plantation Middle School wants to hear from you. The school, located at 7700 West Sunrise Boulevard, has been gradually updat-

ing its landscaping through the work of its Parent-Teacher Organization, and has now come to a standstill due to a lack of funds. “”We will take donations of time because we still need to remove the overgrowth that is there so we can get in there and plant,”

said Lana Henning, the Vice President of Special Events with the Plantation Middle School PTO.

The school of approxi-mately 850 students has already received volunteer help from the First Baptist Church of Fort Lauderdale. Marsha Bell, the parent of a seventh grader at the school, was so impressed with the PTO’s fundraising efforts to beautify the school, that she arranged for a group from her church to come and help clean out old shrubbery

and overgrowth in October. Working with Plantation Middle parents and members of the school’s National Junior Honor Society, they also came back in March to clean-out more areas and add mulch. “They wanted to take us on as one of their community outreach projects,” said Henning.

The idea to give Plantation Middle a make-over came about over the summer, when PTO, working with the administration, decided the landscaping around the school had been neglected for long enough. “We wanted the school to set a better impres-sion when you walk up to it,” said Henning, whose son Nick is in the seventh grade at Plantation Middle. They began fundraising and were able to raise enough to re-landscape a few areas around the school, but know there is much more to be done. Adding to the prob-lem; Plantation Middle is a title one school, where many of the families struggle finan-cially. “We try to fundraise but we don’t come close to raising what other schools do,” said Henning.

In addition to looking for labor, they also need donations of plants, mulch and other supplies. The landscaping is not the only thing they would like to spruce up.. They also want to beautify the inside of the school too, and would like to paint the Media Center and including inspirational quotes, as well as a mural for their students.

If you can help, please contact Plantation Middle School Principal Patricia Hague at 754-322-4100.

Volunteers, Supplies Needed to Help Spruce up Plantation Middle

Volunteers at work putting down mulch at Plantation Middle School

A look at what one of the areas at Plantation Middle School that has been cleared, and in need of new landscaping.

For just a day, several special needs students at South Plantation High School got to put away their

school books, and try their hands at some-thing entirely different. The students, all a part of the school’s PASS program, had the opportunity to learn how to handle and create flower arrangements. “They were thrilled, they had a great time and the staff could not have been more helpful,” said Sherri Auten-Wallace, the Pass/Sphere instructor at South Plantation High.

The special flower arranging class took place March 4 at Field of Flowers, located at 5101 South University Drive in Davie. Staff members took the students on a tour of the facility, including a peek inside the special coolers that keep the flowers at the proper temperature. “We felt it was something we wanted and could do. It would be something the kids would really enjoy,” said Donn Flipse, the Founder and President of Field of Flowers of Davie.

Afterwards, a professional floral designer gave them a hands-on class on how to create an arrangement. “They got to actually put together their own flower arrange-ment and take them home,” said Flipse.

The special class helps provide a glimpse into potential career opportunities for the

students of PASS, which is a school and community-based program that provides functional, independent and vocational living instruction in real life settings. Students with certain special needs can remain in the school system until they are 22 years old. PASS helps expose them to resources in the community and lets them practice real-life skills. “It shows them what is out there,” said Auten-Wallace.

Auten-Wallace says they are always looking for more help from the community, particularly businesses willing to share of their time and skill. Field of Flowers has had field trips come through before, but never one involving older students looking at career possibilities. Donn Flipse said Field of Flowers was happy to fill the need. “I feel that for a modest investment in time and material on our part, I think we had a real positive impact on those kids day,” Flipse said.

If you would like to volunteer, or need more information, contact Sherri Auten Wallace at 754-323-1950, ext 3143, or email her at [email protected]. For more on Field of Flowers, visit them at www.fieldofflowers.com.

A s an attorney handling automobile accident claims in South Florida, I frequently counsel individuals to select an insurance policy that best fits their needs.  Many

times, consumers do not understand the importance of carrying Uninsured Motorist coverage in Florida. Do not confuse Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage with Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage. Drivers in this state are required to carry $10,000.00 in PIP insurance. PIP covers someone that is injured in an accident regardless of whether they are at fault for the crash.

Florida law provides that PIP shall cover eighty percent (80%) of medical bills and sixty percent (60%) of lost wages when a person is injured in an accident. This coverage is paid out as the person receives treatment or submits proof of lost wages. However, when someone is injured in an accident, often the coverage provided by PIP is insufficient to fully compensate them for their damages. In Florida, drivers are not required to carry Bodily Injury (BI) coverage. Therefore, if the person that caused the accident did not purchase BI cov-erage, fled the scene of the crash or carried insufficient coverage, there will not be insurance avail-able to compensate the injured person for their full measure of damages unless they purchased UM coverage.

Recent reports indicate that 25-30% of drivers in Florida do not maintain BI coverage. This number is increasing because of the eco-nomic climate. Unfortunately, we have seen more and more clients that are the victims of a severe crash where the responsible party did not have BI coverage or their policy limits were insufficient to compensate them for their dam-ages. This is when UM coverage becomes essential.

Under Florida law, an insurance company must offer drivers the option to purchase as much UM coverage as liability coverage. Many professionals decide to purchase large amounts of liability coverage to protect themselves and their assets in the event they cause an accident. Unfortunately, these professionals do not understand the importance of also obtaining UM coverage to protect them in the event they are hit by someone with minimal or no bodily injury coverage. It also protects them if they are a victim of a hit-and-run accident. UM coverage can be used to pay for an individual’s medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering as well as future costs and expenses relat-ing to their injuries.

We always make it a point to review a client’s insurance policy and emphasize the importance of obtaining adequate UM coverage. It is critical to review your policy to ensure that you carry sufficient insurance to protect you and your family in the event you are injured in an automobile accident.

Tucked away in an office and retail shopping center in Davie, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, sits a new eatery that promises to give diners a taste of French and international cuisines at its finest. On The Menu, a

Gourmet European Cafe and Bistro, offers something never before seen in Davie. “We

are a bistro, cafe, pastry shop and coffeehouse,” said Pascal Sanchez-Santini, who co-owns On The Menu Café & Bistro with his wife Victoria Williamson.

The idea for the concept behind On The Menu is due in large part to Pascal Sanchez-Santini, who was born and raised in Paris, France and is of Italian and Spanish descent. It was his idea to combine a café with a bistro along with a pastry shop. He and Victoria saw a real lack of French restaurants in Broward, they can point to just a few. They decided that Davie and the surrounding cities, with its melting pot of cultures, was ready for a taste of quality French and international food at affordable prices.

Located at 4801 S. University Drive in the Atrium Center, On The Menu offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with mouth-watering breads, pastries and coffees.

“We have great food, quick friendly service, and an impeccably clean kitchen under the guidance of Master Chef Giuseppe,” said Williamson, who many food lovers will remember from Churchill’s, the upscale fine dining restaurant she built and ran in Cooper City for many years.

Newcomers to On The Menu may first be happily distracted by the rows of tempting authentic French pastries delivered fresh daily from Croissan’Time that beckons when they first walk in the door. There is an array of fruit tarts, Napoleons, éclairs, gorgeous cakes, mousse cakes, cookies, petit fours, baked tarts and special occa-sion cakes. Many guests settle down into the white sofas near the entrance to relax and enjoy their treat while relaxing or meeting clients.

On the Menu has free Wi-Fi, an array

of hot and cold drinks including espresso, macchiato, cappuccino, cafe latte, cafe frappe, breakfast tea, herbal and green teas, sodas and more. The casual space is done in a modern style, with vibrant hues and colorful prints on the walls. Soft French music plays in the background to complete the setting.

But for those looking for a meal, On The Menu is a true gem. They offer mostly natural foods with a focus on being as organic as possible, all made from scratch in their 75-seat eatery. The menu is French bistro, with a nod to Mediterranean cuisine. The kitchen is under the command of Italian-born chef Giuseppe DeRobertis, a Master Chef who studied French cuisine in France and then was a chef in Montreal in French restaurants for years.

On the Menu Café & Bistro opens at 8 a.m. every day except Sunday (they are hop-ing to open soon on Sunday), and diners can find themselves sitting down to specialties such as French toast made with croissants, Liege sugar waffles, egg dishes, baked goods, crepes or a croque madame sandwich, a blend of ham, Swiss, béchamel sauce and a sunny side-up egg. Freshly squeezed orange juice, coffees and teas complete the meal.

For lunch they offer a tantalizing menu of panini’s, sandwiches, burgers, salads and soups, including authentic French Onion soup that is available every day. There is also a full array of salads, which are made entirely from scratch. “The food is made when the customer orders it. Nothing is pre-made,” said Williamson.

Their dinners are a true experience into international cuisines. Guests can start with an appetizer of Mozzarella Caprese, or Coquille St. Jacques Gratin, which features scallops and shrimp baked in a béchamel sauce, with bake mashed potatoes covered with cheese. For a traditional taste of French cuisine, try the escargot, duck confit or beef bourguignon served with tagliatelle or rack of lamb. There are also poultry, pork, and seafood dishes to choose from, as well as domestic and imported wines and beer.

Both Victoria and Pascal invite South Floridians to come check out On The Menu and enjoy the ambiance of their European Cafe & Bistro. It is a great place to meet friends for any meal of the day, or for an afternoon treat of a scrumptious pastry with a specialty coffee. On the Menu Café & Bistro offers daily specials that you can eat-in or take-out. They also offer catering, cooking classes, and a “reality chef” class for the day, where guests can work and learn under the tutelage of a Master Chef.

On the Menu Café & Bistro is located at 4801 S. University Drive, Davie at the main entrance of the Atrium Center just south of Griffin Road on the West side. They are open Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 10 p.m. They will be opening on Sunday’s soon. You can contact them at 954-680-7944 or email at [email protected]. They are also online at www.onthemenucafe.com

Florida Contractor Connection Makes Home Repair Easy

Homeowners often need a handyman for a small project or an entire crew

to remodel a kitchen, but lack the time or resources to find a reliable contractor for the job. Now all they have to do is make a simple phone call to Florida Contractor Connection, Inc. to find a pre-screened, licensed, bonded and insured contractor – at no charge. FCC is a premier home services referral network of dependable, highly skilled professionals in every field from painting, plumbing, and floor refinishing to complete room renovations and home additions.

As a property manager for some of South Florida’s finest residential communities, Owner Stephanie Citron spent many years searching for contractors to complete home improvements and repairs. She quickly learned how to weed out the bad contractors and home improvement specialists and began building a list of those who are reliable and do a great job without consumer complaint. Through the years, her friends and neighbors started calling her for recommendations when they needed work done in their homes and she was always happy to help. Last year, Citron started FCC so she could help other homeowners in South Florida. “It can be very frustrating when contractors show up late or not at all,” said Citron. “We take the guess work out of home improvement so homeowners do not have to spend valuable time searching for a qualified professional to complete a special project. We put them in touch with pre-screened, highly qualified and reliable home improvement and service professionals.”

Citron works with clients who are new to the area, or just do not have time to search for qualified professionals. She has helped clients find professionals for appliance repair, architectural design, carpentry, carpet installation and cleaning, crown molding, cus-tom cabinetry, woodworking, deck/fence installation, painting, driveways, electric, flooring, air conditioning, home inspection and more. FCC makes the process easy by providing a concierge service, unlike many other online referral companies that simply match a zip code with a contractor. The service is free to use and there is no obligation to hire the professionals it refers. Clients submit their home project informa-tion and FCC contacts the most appropriate contractor for the job based on budget, project specification, scheduling, location, and craftsmanship. The contractor calls the client in a timely manner to schedule an appointment. If the proposal is satisfactory, the client hires the contractor and pays him/her directly. FCC stays in contact with the client throughout the entire project to provide additional support and facilitate communication between the homeowner and contractor. FCC also follows up with a survey to measure client satisfaction.

Citron recognizes that FCC is only as good as its contractors, so she requires each one to complete a thorough screening process. In order to become a member of the FCC network, contractors must have proper licensing, bonding and insurance; provide at least five references; complete an interview; display a good attitude and professional demeanor; and be in good standing with the Better Business Bureau. Most contractors generate work through referrals and from repeat loyal customers and understand the benefits of being a member of the FCC network. They learn about projects that are suited to their specialties and within their geographical boundaries. “Our contractors go out of their way to do a good job and keep clients happy so they can remain in the network,” said Citron. “We are proud to represent such an outstanding group of professionals.”

When is the best time for your child’s first orthodontic check-up? The answer is no later than age 7, and here’s why:

▸ Orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present.

▸ While your child’s teeth may appear to be straight, there could be a problem that only an orthodontist can detect.

▸ A check up may reveal that your child’s bite is fine. Or, the orthodontist may identify a developing problem but recommend monitoring the child’s growth and develop-ment, and then, if indicated, begin treatment at the appropriate time for the child. In the other cases, the orthodontist might find a problem that can benefit from early treatment.

▸ Early treatment may prevent or intercept more serious problems from developing and may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. In some cases, the orthodontist will be able to achieve results that may not be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing.

▸ Early treatment may give your orthodontist the chance to: Guide jaw growth, lower risk of trauma to protruded front teeth, correct harmful oral habits, improve appearance, guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position and create a more pleasing arrangement of teeth, lips and face

Even if your child is older than 7, it’s certainly not too late for a check-up. Because patients differ in both physiologi-cal development and treatment needs, the orthodontist’s goal is to provide each patient with the most appropriate treatment at the most appropriate time.

In addition, if you notice any of the following in your child, check with your orthodontist: early or late loss of baby teeth, speech difficulties, difficulty in chewing or biting, biting the cheek or the roof of the mouth, mouth breathing, facial imbalance, jaws that shift or make sounds or grinding or clenching of the teeth

Final treatment decisions should be made among the parent, child’s dentist and orthodontist. Through an early orthodontic evaluation, you’ll be giving your child the best opportunity for a healthy, beautiful smile.

legally speaking

P redatory lending is when a lender imposes abusive, unfair and sometimes illegal loan terms on borrowers, without regard for the borrow-ers’ ability to repay the loan. When two or more of the following factors are

contained in a mortgage loan transaction, the subsequent forensic audit performed on that transaction usually reveals serious violations of federal and state lending laws.

property purchased or refinanced between 2003 and 2007.This four year period marked the peak of the real estate boom in South Florida. Just about anyone, including foreign nationals without any past credit history, could obtain a

“sub-prime” loan for all the value of the mortgaged property. The sub-prime mortgage market thrived during this time, allowing borrowers to encumber their properties well beyond their true market values.

mortgage loan contains an adjustable rate or “arm” feature. These types of loans are initially set at an artificially low interest rate for a brief period of time. They then switch to an adjustable rate for the remaining term of the loan, and the rate can increase as often as every six months. Even if the U.S. interest rate index remains unchanged, the monthly payments on these loans could increase by up to 50%. These loans have the highest delinquency rate of any other loan product.

mortgage loan contains negative amortization.Negative amortization occurs when the monthly mortgage payment is not sufficient to even cover the interest due, and therefore, the balance of the loan increases over time even though payments have been made. If you owe more today on your home loan, than when you originally purchased or refinanced, your loan is negatively amortized.

mortgage loan is interest-only or pick-a-payment.Under these types of loans, the borrower is only required to pay the interest due on the loan or some other minimal payment that does not even cover the interest on the loan. After a few years, the required monthly payment is usually increased to cover the outstanding balance. Once the loan payment is increased, so does the likelihood the borrower will default, and eventually be subjected to foreclosure.

mortgage loan approval based only on stated income.Roughly half of all sub-prime borrowers from 2003-2007 were given “stated income” loans, in which they were qualified based on statements in the loan application as to their income. These statements of income were largely unverified, and often the “stated income” required for the loan to be approved was the exact amount included in the application by the mortgage broker.

If any of these factors apply to your current loan, you should at least have a professional

forensic audit performed to find out whether you have any viable claims against your lender. If your claims are timely and properly raised, you may be entitled to reduce the amount you owe, or cancel your loan obligation altogether. A more detailed explana-tion of these factors, different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, and key foreclosure defense strategies are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home,” which is available in both Spanish and English. Contact the Arcia Law Firm to receive a FREE copy of this DVD (which retails for $39.95 plus S/H).

You notice the difference at CrossFit Affliction as soon as you walk through the door. Gone are the fancy, sleek machines you find in air conditioned, cookie cutter gyms across South Florida.

In their place is hardcore workout equipment, in a huge warehouse, all designed with the goal of helping almost anyone get into shape. “We are really like an old fashioned type of gym facility,” said Steve Bowser, who co-owns CrossFit Affliction with wife Heidi.

While the facility may be old school, CrossFit is one of the newest and most popular strength and conditioning programs on the market today. With thousands of locations nationwide, CrossFit includes a cross-section of gymnastics, endurance training, and weight lifting, focusing on core strength and overall agility. No two work-outs are the same. Instead, the program provides constantly varied, high-intensity, functional workouts for all fit-ness levels.

Located at 10400 State Road 84 in Davie, CrossFit Affliction was the first CrossFit Facility to open in Broward County in 2007. They also have a separate 6,000 square foot location in downtown Fort Lauderdale and their experience has helped them to become the premier CrossFit facility in Broward County. They specialize in strength, power, and endur-ance training and also have an endurance team along with a USA Weightlifting Team.

While their client base includes pro athletes, national high school champs, Navy SEALS, firefight-ers and SWAT team members, Bowser is quick to point out CrossFit is ideal for people of any fitness level or age, stay-at-home moms and grandparents are no exception. “Our unique program is designed for all levels of athlete.  No one is too in shape or out of shape to participate,” said Heidi.

CrossFit Affliction is based in a 4,200 square foot facility, featuring York weight lifting and glute-ham equipment, colored bumper-plates, Concept II rowing machines, a full complement of kettle bells, ab-mats, and metabolic conditioning equipment. Trained and certified staff members are on hand to help members through the workouts which engage different skills on different days, and are run against the clock. “You are timed which gives you a little more incentive to work harder,” Heidi explained. Everyone follows the same routine on a given day which helps build one of the most important aspects of CrossFit; teamwork. “There is a real sense of community because everyone

is trying to complete the same thing,” said Steve.

All new members are put through the On Ramp Course, a 2-day program that helps determine their level of fitness. It is a required program that not only provides an assessment, but also a crash course on all movements, including Olympic lifts, barbell movements, Kettle bell training, basic gymnastics, running methods, nutrition, and more.   Once the On ramp sessions are complete, new members can join the class. A baseline workout is completed

every 3 months to measure progress. “With CrossFit, members will notice a difference in two weeks,” said Steve.

The program is intense, and not easy, but the results are well worth the effort, according to Steve. “You have to be 100% committed to hard work and dedication toward your fitness goals.   If you want an improved lifestyle and overall better fitness and health, call us to set up an appoint-ment,” he said.  Their trainers hold a large variety of certifications includ-ing:  CrossFit Level 1, Coaches Prep for Level 2, Olympic Weightlifting, Barbell, Kettle bell, Football, Running and Endurance, Nutrition, POSE Running, Movement and Mobility, Rowing, USA Olympic Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach, with several more to come.

Both Steve and Heidi bring impressive credentials to CrossFit Affliction. Steve has a strong sports background, including football, wrestling, track, body building, kickboxing, and power lifting. His experience with the associated training programs has given him a well rounded fitness resume. Heidi’s background includes body building shows, power lifting competitions, and law enforcement, where a func-tional level of fitness allows you to properly react to potentially dangerous situations. Power lift-ing taught her the importance

of proper form, which is critical to the Olympic lifting section of the CrossFit system, while preparation for body building competitions taught her the effect that long term nutritional decisions and dietary programs have.

At CrossFit Affliction, anyone can improve their fitness for as little as $8 per session. “Why pay a personal trainer $45-$50 per hour, when you can group train for much less,” said Steve.

If you are ready to get into shape, call CrossFit for an appointment to come check out their facility.

CrossFit Affliction is located at 10400 State Road 84, #103, in Davie. You can phone them at 954-846-8666 or email them at [email protected].

Slender Fit U Makes Dieting Easy

S lender Fit U is helping clients turn their bodies into fat burning machines. They

are losing 1/2 to 2 pounds of fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods and keeping it off. The medically supervised program helps dieters modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in an easily maintained, long-term weight loss. It is the last diet they will ever need to do.

Clients follow a very specific low calorie diet that is made up of real food, proteins, fruits and vegetables. They also use a tiny dose of hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin), a natural complex amino-peptide protein found in both men and women. The hCG helps their bodies break down its “abnormal” fat storage and sculpts it while they lose weight. Clients keep their desired lean muscle mass, and only lose the unsightly fat. As a result, they lose not only pounds but an equal amount of inches. They are also able to maintain

a low calorie diet without suffering headaches, irritability or weakness, which are so commonly seen during most other weight loss diets or programs. “Every pound you lose on the Slender Fit U program is equal to almost three pounds of regular weight,” said Geri Correa, Slender Fit U’s founder and program director. “Because hCG is a natural substance, this program is completely safe. It is virtually 100 percent effective for everyone.”

Although the use of hCG in a weight loss program has been receiving a great deal of attention lately, it is actually not a new concept. The scientific protocol was discovered almost 60 years ago by the late Dr A.T.W. Simeons, a British endocrinolo-gist. Geri improved on the original protocol to achieve even better results with the

Slender Fit U program. In fact, many refer to Geri as the “hCG Guru.” She has been involved with the diet

since it became popular in South Florida a few years ago. She lost 25 pounds on the diet and it changed her life. She has put thousands of people on the program who have experienced similar results. They range in age from 12 to 80. “The diet helped me regain the same youthful shape I had in my 20’s,” said Geri. “I love my job because I have helped so many clients change their lives. They are absolutely amazed at the spectacular results. My Slender Fit U program really works!”

Geri personally guides each of her clients every step of the way and gives them the tools they need to stick with the program. She works directly with Slender Fit U’s Medical Director, Dr. Peter Babinski, to monitor every client’s medical progress throughout the program. After losing 20 to 30 pounds, many people find they no longer need to take their blood pressure or diabetes medication. The weight loss has provided them with a healthier body that no longer requires medication.

Geri has built her reputation on doing what works and the results speak for them-selves. Amazingly, 90% of her clients do not gain any weight back after successfully completing the Slender Fit U program. Luis lost 35 pounds and 20 inches in 43 days.

“I was very skeptical at the beginning,” said Luis. “I’ve have done many diets in the past with very little success. After I started the diet and I started losing so much weight I was so excited. I was never hungry. I was very satisfied with my meals and I also felt great during the program. I found it very easy to do and I would recommend this program to anyone that is looking forward to losing weight doing something healthy, natural and easy. It turns out this was the best money I ever spent!” Jeannie lost 29 pounds and 23 inches in 43 days. “Before Slender Fit U, I hated getting on a scale,” said Jeannie. “It was the most depressing part of the day. Now I can’t wait to jump on. I cannot believe the amount of weight I have lost. You can see and feel the results within the first 3 days. My stomach is disappearing!”

Slender Fit U is very affordable. Clients can chose from two programs, depending on the amount of weight they want to lose. In the 23 day program, women can expect to lose 10 to 15 pounds and men will lose 20 to 25 pounds. In the 43 day program, women will lose 20 to 30 pounds and a man will lose 30 to 40 pounds. The cost ranges from $350 to $600.

Slender Fit U is located at 12525 Orange Dr., Suite 701, in Davie. For more information or to set up a free consultation, call 954-423-1376; visit www.slenderfitu.com or send an email to [email protected].

Stroke is the third leading cause of death follow-ing heart disease and cancer. Every year, more than 795,000 Americans suffer from a new or recurrent stroke episode – that

means that a stroke occurs every 40 seconds. Americans will pay close to $70 billion in stroke-related medical costs in this year alone.

Q: What is a stroke?A: A stroke or “brain attack” is damage to the brain when blood supply to part of the brain is reduced or completely stopped. Brain

cells deprived of blood die and can no longer function because they stop getting oxygen and nutrients they need to function.

Q: What are signs or symptoms of a stroke?A: Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or legs; sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; trouble walk-ing, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination and sudden, severe headaches with no known cause.

Q: What you can do to prevent a stroke?A: A healthier lifestyle plays a big part in decreasing the chance of disability and death from stroke: stop or don’t smoke; exercise regularly; control high blood pressure; maintain ideal body weight; limit alcohol intake; control cholesterol; improve eating habits; take medication as directed; control diabetes and get regular check-ups.

Q: What stroke treatments are available at the Cleveland Clinic Stroke Center?A: Physical and neurological exams are performed immediately to determine brain damage and the cause of stroke. The physician may also get a CT Scan of the head to further investigate the type of stroke. If a blood clot is the cause of stroke, as it most often is, a clot busting medication called Tissue Plasminogen Activator (tPA) can be used for treatment, but must be administered within 4 ½ hours of the onset of symptoms.

If you or someone with you has one or more of the above symptoms of stroke, don’t delay, call 9-1-1 immediately. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Salgado at the Cleveland Clinic Stroke Center, please call 1-800-639-DOCTOR, or visit www.clevelandclinicflorida.org for more information.
