Industry Partnership Forms “Complete Solution” 15 July 2013 Edgecam celebrated 30 years in the CAD/CAM industry by holding a productivity event at Seco’s new Technology Centre. Manufacturers from around the country attended the seminar, where they learned from Seco’s Business Development Manager – Products, David Magnall, how a dedicated partnership of suppliers forms “the complete solution for the metal cutting industry.” Presentations from Edgecam, Seco, and workholding specialists Roemheld showed over 130 delegates representing all industry sectors:

• How Edgecam’s new Workflow application will help them reduce costs, improve quality and hit shorter lead times

• The essential differences between high speed machining and high feed milling • How to future-proof their workholding investments.

Edgecam engineer Mike O’Neill said Workflow – which was introduced in Edgecam 2013 R2 – and the Waveform Roughing Strategy launched last year, are the most significant developments in Edgecam’s history. He and Pre Sales Manager Lee Richards detailed how Workflow automatically loads a part in the correct manufacturing environment, with datum set, enabling CAD/CAM engineers to apply toolpaths within seconds.

Live machining demonstrations were held on a Mori Seiki and AgieCharmilles Mikron showing how Waveform maximises material removal rates while delivering shorter cycle times and prolonging both tool and machine tool life...along with 5-axis machining. Steve Heatherglen, Seco’s Product Manager for Indexable Milling, explained the theory behind high speed machining, outlining machine tool requirements such as NC control, block cycle times, machine rapidity, spindles and run out. He showed how harder carbide tools were used with small arcs of contact, creating small radial cutting depths. And he highlighted its difference from high feed milling, which he said was a roughing process designed to remove as much material as possible in the shortest time. Delegates were also shown how workholding for 5-axis components is “totally different” from standard positioning. Roemheld Managing Director Bill Neal said the growing complexity of components means 5-axis machining is becoming increasingly more popular, and he outlined how to “future-proof” workholding investments for access, component handling, positioning, repeatability and rigidity. Edgecam users said they found the event invaluable in keeping up with Edgecam’s latest “game-changing” developments.

• Tom Newbery, Technical Director of VES Precision Ltd, said Workflow will dramatically speed up the programming of parts for their aerospace and food industry components, and Waveform has already considerably extended tool life.

• Waveform is now Aerogrind Tooling’s default roughing strategy, according to Managing Director Tim Shillabeer, who said: “We’ve used it successfully in many recent applications.” And he forecast that Workflow will enable him to provide a better, faster and more efficient service to customers. “It’ll speed up the programming process, so we can start cutting metal much quicker than in the past.”

• Andrew Wright, Production Engineer for both Newburgh Engineering and the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, expects Workflow to reduce part setting up time. “It’ll take out a lot of the mundane operations that we do day to day, such as repeats, rotations, orientating them in the correct way, and setting stock. Basically it’ll reduce the nuts and bolts of setting the part up and getting to the toolpath generation much quicker.”

The seminar also looked at other new and enhanced functionality in Edgecam 2013 R2, including moving faces, the 3D Mirror procedure and the Analyse Profile command in Part Modeler. Lee Richards said a major benefit comes from the Part Modeler CAD Loader options for NX, ACIS, Inventor, CATIA V5 and Creo Parametric now being included in the Edgecam Part Modeler and Solid CAD/CAM core licenses. Turning enhancements include support for multiple turrets with the Siemens and Mori Seiki code wizards...the intention is to roll this out to more templates in future releases...and a new Finish Groove

cycle. Milling cycles have been updated to allow boundaries to be selected directly from solid edges without the need to create wireframe geometry from edges or Edge Loop Features first. In previous versions of Edgecam, each time the simulator was started the entire toolpath was sent from start to finish, along with all the model data. An update in 2013 R2 means it picks up where the simulation last finished. New functionality in the Wire EDM module introduces the ability to create “User Technology,” selected in the same way as Machine Technology. Materials and Wires are added from the Machining Sequence start up. Cuts can be saved to the User database on the Cycle dialog technology page with a unique, identifying name. After saving the cuts, the new technology will be listed on the technology database page. Selecting a technology populates the Cut Technology page within the database settings. Existing Machine Technology cut data can also be amended and saved as a new User Technology. A new Wire Profile Feature command has been added to find “wireable” features directly from a solid, removing the need to extract geometry from a solid body, which can be time-consuming. Multiple 2D and lofted form features can be created within one transaction. Moreover, the Wire Feature is associate to the solid body, meaning that if the original model is altered, the wire path is automatically updated.

Delcam Enhances Integrated Electrode Solution 15 July 2013 Delcam has added a range of enhancements to its Delcam Electrode integrated solution for the design, machining and inspection of electrodes. The new version includes support for burn-vector electrodes, automated machining of electrode frames, batch processing of multiple machining projects and faster generation of electrode drawings. Delcam Electrode also benefits from a number of options introduced into Delcam’s PowerSHAPE design software which provides the CAD element of the overall solution. Full details are available on the website – www.delcam-electrode.com. Burn-vector or side-sparking electrodes are used to spark undercuts within moulds, including those needed for submarine gates, or to avoid any possibility of a collision when sparking the base of a deep rib or similar feature. They use an arbitrary axis for their operation, rather than being aligned with the principal axes. Delcam Electrode now allows these electrodes to be designed and used with the same quick and easy wizard-based process available for conventional electrodes. The electrode action can be simulated in the software and the final design passed to Delcam’s PowerMILL CAM system for machining in the same way as standard electrodes. Electrode frames are used to provide the basis for machining and inspection datums. Delcam Electrode now allows these areas to be modelled and then coloured separately from the electrode blank. This makes it easy for them to be identified in PowerMILL for automated manufacture using a specific template. The burn region, extension faces and clearance faces were already able to be displayed and machined with separate colours in this way. The ability to automate programming within PowerMILL as part of the electrode solution does save considerable time for the user. However, when machining a large number of electrodes, it is inefficient to wait for toolpaths to be calculated on each individual project. To overcome this problem, the option to use batch processing of multiple projects has been introduced within the electrode machining wizard. The user now simply allocates one machining template in PowerMILL to a series of electrodes if the designs are similar, or applies the appropriate template to each example if they differ significantly in

Page 32: PLM Industry Summary - CIMdata · Delcam adds 30 Graduates and Undergrads to Birmingham Staff 18 July 2013 CADCAM developer Delcam is adding a total of 30 graduates and undergraduates

Page 32

size or style. Processing the toolpaths starts as soon as the first project is loaded. Subsequent projects are displayed in a list, with calculations beginning on the next item in the list automatically. At any stage, the user can move items up and down the list, depending on the urgency of the various tasks. If the calculations for a particular electrode cannot be completed, for example, if the software detects a collision, the problem is recorded and PowerMILL moves on to the next item automatically. Thus, a long series of calculations can be left to run overnight if necessary. Alternatively, the complete series of projects can be collected into a folder and moved to a second computer for calculation, while the user carries on with other tasks on his main computer. The ability to generate customised drawings automatically is another important benefit of the electrode solution. This has been enhanced so that information generated while the user progresses through the electrode-design wizard, such as the project name or the different spark gaps to be applied, is used to fill in details for the drawings immediately. Generation of the drawings when the design is complete becomes much faster as a result. All of the direct modelling enhancements to PowerSHAPE help to speed the creation of the electrode design. Of particular benefit are the "replace-face” command, which ensures extensions are at the same height when merging electrodes to be machined from a single blank, and the "solid-split command”, which makes it easier to divide unwanted material away from the electrode to create a simpler shape for machining. Delcam Electrode combines Delcam’s PowerSHAPE CAD software, PowerMILL CAM system and PowerINSPECT inspection software to give a completely integrated solution for the design, machining and inspection of electrodes. At the heart of the Delcam solution is a novel file format – the .Trode file. This contains all the information for each electrode project, including not only the electrode design but also the machining and inspection information, plus the set-up sheets for its manufacture and use. Having all the required information in a single file simplifies data management as well as increasing overall efficiency.

Customers frequently use reference designs to facilitate new product development where package names in the reference do not match company libraries. The CircuitSpace 5.0 ‘Match Packages’ feature applies templates with similar package styles but having different names and pin locations in support of reference designs. Also, mirroring circuit clusters has been expanded to allow mirroring components on the same layer. This facilitates placing clusters around a central location keeping components relative to the center object(s), retaining the same relative component positions as other circuits. This would particularly be useful to customers creating automatic test equipment (ATE). Other enhancements in CircuitSpace 5.0 include the support of crossprobing with the latest Adobe 11 version. Also, templates now support keywords and along with advanced filtering, candidate template memberships are narrowed to matching keywords in the template to the current design. Network Settings file is another new feature to support corporate site configuration and a long requested feature to support Undo/Redo CircuitSpace commands has now been implemented. “These new features build on CircuitSpace’s ability to save PCB designers significant time and reduce errors by incorporating intelligent clustering, placement, and design reuse into their workflow,” added Marcano. For more information about EMA and CircuitSpace 5.0, visit EMA at ema-eda.com/CircuitSpace5or call 800-813-7494.

toolpaths within seconds. The new tools aid in loading and positioning the component, choosing the manufacturing method and suitable machine tools, adding user defined stock or stock from a database, importing fixtures, selecting a machine and toolkit, and managing strategies to automate manufacture. At each stage Workflow takes decisions or makes suggestions as to how the goal is best achieved. However, the user can easily over-ride the decisions if required making the whole process flexible. All Edgecam dialogs have been updated to include a set of buttons for selecting data interactively. These buttons at the top of the dialog indicate what data is required:

• As geometry is required the appropriate buttons are highlighted • If the geometry is mandatory and must be selected then the button is marked with an underline • When the data is picked, the appropriate button is ticked to show successful selection • If the geometry selection is not required the appropriate button is greyed out.

If any buttons are left without data after the OK button has been clicked, a prompt will be displayed and the user will be asked to select the geometry. These new buttons guide the user through geometry selections making all Edgecam cycles much easier to use. Part Modeler now comes with free CAD Model Loaders for Parasolid, STEP, NX, ACIS, Inventor, CATIA V5 and Creo Parametric files. A Move hole and Faces command allows the repositioning of features from models designed in another CAD system. They can either be moved from the original CAD datum position or relative to a user defined position. To modify features, for example, holes, grooves, pocket walls and boss heights on a third party model, individual features can be moved to create a “Manufacturing Model” from a design model, allowing for mid tolerancing models to be created and manage conditions created, such as expansion, when using heat treatments. Simulator now runs as a separate process to Edgecam providing the following benefits:

• Simulator starts instantly on second start up; a major benefit when simulating large parts • Simulator starts from where the simulation last finished; no need to run simulation from the start

each time • Update Stock is up to 50% quicker than the previous release.

Simulator rendering has been enhanced. By default, stock surfaces are rendered with a metallic look. And a Flat Rendering option has been added to render the surfaces with a non-metallic look. Rapid Result has been improved for this release and Tool graphics are now displayed, with Toggle Tool and Toggle Tool Holders buttons enabled. A new Wire Profile Feature command has been added to find features suitable for Wire Erosion from a solid. This facility removes the need to extract the edges from the solid to make the wireframe fences. Other improvements to the Wire EDM include:

• Faces can be picked individually, by window or chained

other relationships are preconfigured within the process layer of the integration hub. No additional programming or direction is needed. Despite a diverse ecosystem, all stakeholders can access the information needed in an environment they are comfortable with. Integration Hub Eases Tool Migration For companies using traditional, documents-based requirements management tools, the ALM integration hub brings next-generation capabilities with or without migration. Using the OMG RIF/ReqIF protocol, requirements and related information from the traditional tool can be synchronized, decomposed, structured and reused within Visure Requirements, giving the development team access to next-generation capabilities within a familiar environment. And, if the decision to migrate to a newer tool makes sense, companies can move their data in a way that is smoother, less risky, and more transparent. Companies adopting a standardized ecosystem have the advantage of defining processes from a central configuration point, which enables all stakeholders both within the company and with third-party suppliers to coordinate processes reducing typical challenges and costs.
