› Managed Services› Optical Solutions› Intelligent Infrastructure Solutions› Wireless Solutions ... everything you need for telecommunications infrastructure to
support your business strategy
inFrastructure anD yOur business
Africa has more telecommunications infrastructure than ever before. The demand for additional infrastructure grows exponentially every year as content and device end users move progressively more of their work and lifestyles to mobile unified communications and collaboration technologies. Infrastructure growth is also being fuelled at an unprecedented rate by the relentlessly dynamic evolution of connectivity technologies.
This has moved the need for robust, reliable, scalable, and future-proofed infrastructure to the heart of strategic considerations for telecommunications operators and content and service providers. You can’t grow market share if you can’t deliver content and services at the highest levels of quality and reliability.
The high demand for world class infrastructure has also escalated the amount of executive effort and attention that needs to be expended on the design, building, and maintenance of infrastructure. This detracts from the executive effort and time that should be spent on growing and consolidating end user market share.
The easiest and most cost-effective way of releasing executives from this drain on their attention, is by partnering with an infrastructure solutions provider that can help you plan, acquire, implement, support, maintain and manage the entire lifecycle of your infrastructure – in such a way that it always services your business strategy.
plessey is that sOlutiOns prOviDer
plessey has been designing, building and supporting telecommunications infrastructure on the African continent for 50 years.
We have more experience, across more types of locations, technologies, industry sectors, and operator business strategies than any other organisation on the continent.
We’ve laid more than 8 000 km's of optical fibre on schedule and on budget, helping to put cable thieves behind bars while we’re at it, as well as meeting stringent health and safety and environmental criteria at all times. For instance, the cable we laid connecting the West Africa Cable System to Cape Town runs through the

Western Cape’s extremely sensitive fynbos biome as well as a number of historical sites. Not only did we manage the environmental impact assessments, but also all community liaison and completed the 140km installation in record time without damage to the environment or any historical site.
Infrastructure provision and management is a deceptively challenging business, in that, superficially, it seems to be about digging trenches and throwing concrete.
In fact, it requires specialisation in an extraordinarily diverse set of disciplines, including:• Site assessment and evaluation• Negotiations with local and regional governments• Civil engineering
• physical security• Sub-contractor selection and training • Health and safety expertise• Community capacity building• Establishment and maintenance of relationships with
technology vendors• Environmental custodianship• power management • project management and,• Supply chain management
It’s rare for any telecommunications operator or voice and data provider to have, in-house, just a few of these skills. As we have them all, we’ve been able, by way of example, to build and commission 290 base transceiver stations in a single month.
3 - pLESSEY
For all these reasons, plessey has become the continent’s premier turnkey infrastructure solutions provider. Through its four business units; Optical Solutions, Wireless Solutions, Intelligent Infrastructure and Managed Services, plessey is able to tailor its offerings to meet the strategic business needs of its clients.
speciFically...We have cOntinental reach
Our headquarters are in Midrand, South Africa, and we have eight other offices in Zambia, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Nigeria, and Mauritius. From these nine offices, we currently operate in 24 African countries and have the capacity and resources to extend into others.
Applying a stringent qualification process, to assure our clients of best practice and world class quality, we strive to use in-country equipment and materials vendors whenever doing so makes commercial sense for the client.
We Guarantee quality anD best practice
plessey is ISO 90001:2008, ISO 14001; 2004 and OHSAS 18001 accredited. We apply the same standards and methodology in every country and on every project. At the start of every project, we work with the client to define the project deliverables, identify business objectives, define project objectives, and assess project risks. This standards-based approach assures clients of an absolute consistency in our service and solutions wherever we operate on their behalf.
All our staff and all sub-contractors are required to complete ongoing, six monthly refresher courses in disciplines such as health and safety. All technicians working on towers must be certified climbers. We also train technical personnel on GSM-specific electrical applications. This includes theoretical and practical training at the suppliers, using laboratories and state of the art facilities.
The benefits to clients of our application of superior materials and workmanship are a significant long-
term reduction in maintenance requirements and minimised downtime.

plessey takes the view that long-term management and maintenance of infrastructure actually starts with planning and design. A properly originated infrastructure rarely needs as much maintenance and management as one that is cobbled together. We bring our considerable knowledge and experience to bear to that end in the early stages of infrastructure development.
However, not all infrastructure implementations have the luxury of being greenfield projects. Which is why we established a Network Operations Centre (NOC) and have developed a dedicated, service level agreement (SLA) driven, managed services division whose focus is on significantly reducing a client’s time to repair and just as significantly improving uptime.
The benefits to clients of our application of superior materials and workmanship are a significant long-term reduction in maintenance requirements and minimised downtime.
