As some of you may know my work in Long Term Care started as an accident – I had worked in the hospital setting, moved to the not-for profit sector in Senior Services and was recruited to work in Marketing and Admissions of another Long Term Care provider. The rest as they say – is history. I worked the ranks and moved into several positions before coming to ECC and leading this team. I have learned a lot over the years – I have seen a lot over the years- but what gives me pause as I look back at my 25 years are the residents we care for and the staff that work in these facilities. First the residents – when I started in LTC the referrals for Admissions were elderly folks that needed a little care and help to live out their life in someplace safe, healthy and in a caring environment. Now Admissions are more and more coming of two kinds of admissions: younger folks needing rehabilitation to get back home and sicker seniors needing a lot of care. Over the years, facilities, especially the ECC Consultant facilities in the last five years, have geared up to meeting these two different resident populations, their needs, and their expectations of us. And then the staff – I have never met staff that collectively work as hard as our staff do in LTC. Not in the hospital, not in the social service agencies – nowhere. The commitment of staff that work in LTC understand the challenges of working in this field – it can be hard. But it is also the most rewarding. There is an old nursing home saying – residents don’t live in our facilities, we work in their homes. Our staff understand that a lot of our residents would rather be home, or want to get home. They also understand that despite this desire of the residents, it may not be possible for some. And staff continue to do whatever they can to make them comfortable, safe and well taken-care of for their needs. So for my 25th Anniversary in Long Term Care I decided to just simply write a thank you to all of the staff that work in the Long Term Care environment. The CNAs, the Housekeepers, the Nurses, the Dietary staff, Marketing, the Maintenance staff, the Social Service and Activities staff, the Admissions and Administrative Staff, the Consultants, everyone who makes our village a caring village- Thank you. It is doubtful I could celebrate another 25 years in Long Term Care but while I am here I stand tall and I am proud to be here with all of you. Rainbow Beach would like to introduce you to our dedicated Program Director, Sandra Knox. Sandra has been a part of Rainbow Beach for 3 years but has provided services in the Mental Health/Social Services field for a stellar 42 years. She began her education at the University of Chicago where she originally planned to study archeology or anthropology. That all changed after taking an Intro to Psychology class led by a very motivating professor who was a survivor of the Holocaust. This intrigued her and from then on, the field of Psychology seemed like a good fit. Sandra completed her Bachelor’s degree at U of C and then began her Master’s degree there. After completion of her Master’s coursework, she was sidetracked by an enlistment in the Army where she obtained ranking as a 2nd Lieutenant. After that hiatus, she then returned to Chicago where she finished her Master’s degree in Behavioral Sciences. She went on to obtain her Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor certification so that she could go into private practice. In 1983, Sandra opened the Midwest’s, first retail bookstore for the hearing impaired community and brought much needed resources to the deaf community in Chicago. It was located on State Street in the Chicago Loop. She learned to communicate in sign language in order to assist in her work with mental health.

Sandra has a number of diverse interests including horseback riding, stained glass artistry and caring for feral cats in her backyard. She became a first time parent at the age of 48 when she adopted two precious children into her family. Her family now includes two housecats and a blue Parakeet.

What keeps her inspired? The continuous learning experiences she is given through the people she meets. They all have something different to offer. Her aspirations for Rainbow Beach? To complete the transition from nursing home to SMHRF and for Rainbow Beach to become a “model” Specialized Mental Health Rehabilitation Facility. With a background like this, we think she’s definitely up for the challenge!

Jackie Crawford has been a loyal and dedicated employee of Sebos for almost 20 years, so when the Director of Guest Services position became available Jackie was the our #1 choice. Jackie has led by example and been a shining star at Sebos for so many years. Jackie always has a smile on her face and goes above and beyond for our residents, family and staff. Jackie has 3 beautiful children and 1 grandbaby and has been married for 4 years. In Jackie’s free time she enjoys interior decorating and riding her motorcycle. We are so excited to welcome Jackie to her new role and look forward to working with her!

We are also welcoming Ariell Adams to our Admissions and Marketing Team. Ariell has been employed at Sebos since November 2018 and just recently accepted the Admissions Coordinator. She is excited to take on this new role and is looking forward to working with the Sebos team, whom she feels strives daily to make Sebos home for so many people. Arielle is the mother to a beautiful baby girl and loves to try new things and meet new people . Her smile is contagious and we are beyond excited to see what great things she does at Sebos.

On March 21 the staff at Westmont Manor opened their doors to multiple entities of our industry. Everyone had a joyous time touring the post-acute unit with an exceptional presentation by the therapy department. A member of a local senior living community was excited to win the Coopers Hawk gift basket. Everyone had a fun evening socializing, sipping wine and finger foods and deserts, especially the added zest, compliments of Ron to the lemon tarts.

Welcome to the team new Sebos members!March 15th, 2019 was a very special day at Prairie Manor, it marked Sharon Brazil’s 30 years of outstanding service. Sharon started her journey at Prairie Manor as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Over the years, she has become the ward clerk, transporter, and finally

the Health Information Management Coordinator (HIMC) in 2001. Sharon sparkles with pride as she talks of how she helped unpack and set up the mattress for the first resident at Prairie Manor 30 years ago.

Even though her office is in the basement, Sharon has managed to make it the brightest, most cheerful, and colorful office in the building with her eye for interior decorating. Her purple office walls are covered in canvases of butterflies and serene looking birds. Staff often find themselves in her office enjoying a few moments of tranquility before returning to the energetic buzz of activities throughout the rest of the building.

In addition to her dedication to her work, Sharon shows dedication in her personal life. Sharon has been married to Jim Brazil for 15 years. However, if her celebrity crush Patrick Swayze somehow comes back to life and walks through Sharon’s door, all bets are off with Jim. Sharon has 4 sons and 4 grandchildren that she showers with love and support every single day. Her 2 Yorkies Annabelle and Jackson are 2 of the luckiest pups in the world simply because Sharon is their mother. She refers to them as “the loves of my life.” Sharon extends that same magnitude of love to our Prairie Manor family.

“I love to wake up and come to work every day to share time with the residents,” said Sharon. She treats each resident like family. Sharon said, “Life has been good and I attribute a lot of that to Prairie Manor” without which “I couldn’t have supported my family.” We are proud to have Sharon Brazil in our Prairie Manor family, and we are thankful for her unwavering faith and service. We hope for many more years of service before she decides to pursue her dream of moving to Florida and drinking Mimosas on the beach.
