Page 6: Playbill for Little Shop of Horrors

Brad Burdick, Executive DirectorWe occasionally hear questions re-garding the theatre’s finances, and even more often we field questions

about ticket prices. Attending a performance at MBT costs less than in Vancouver, Seattle, or another large city, especially if you add travel and lodging costs to the ticket price. However, the Whatcom County economy being what it is, there is still a percentage of residents who feel we should be able to reduce prices.

As a not-for-profit, our annual budget for each fiscal year is a matter of public record, but it is a bit daunting for those not well versed with such things. We thought you might be interested in a big-picture overview. Because we are not-for-profit, the goal when finalizing the budget for board approval each year is to be balanced at a ‘zero’ bottom line. The money that comes in is just enough to cover the expenses out, and for Mount Baker Theatre that amount is just under $3.1 million.

When we add up all of the show revenue from the Main Stage, the Walton The-atre and the Encore Room for an entire year and subtract all the expenses that are directly associated with those shows, we only generate about 31 percent of what it actually costs for the general overhead of the theatre. For those who ask about ticket prices, this reveals we would need to raise those prices significantly to be self-sus-taining on ticket revenue alone.

Luckily, our development efforts generate the remaining needed 69 percent from sources other than ticket revenue. This year’s Gala event featuring Steve Martin, Edie Brickell, and the Steep Canyon Rangers is a huge part of the equation. We also receive enormous support from our volunteers; in calendar year 2013 the total hours donated were the equivalent of 7 full-time employees!

Hopefully, this helps you understand a bit about the operations at Mount Baker Theatre, and has given us the opportunity to once again say a sincere thank you to our supporters. Without such strong and loyal support, Bellingham would not have the gift of this beautiful theatre and the high-quality, diverse programs we are able to bring to all of you at prices way below what it actually costs.

Brad Burdick, Executive Director

THE CAST

SONIA ALEX-IS (SHIRELLE) is excited to be back for a fourth season with MBT Rep. She has been actively involved in musical and the-atre productions in Whatcom and Skagit

counties for the past 7 years. She is a soloist with Assumption Catholic Church and has performed with the Bellingham Festival of Music, Bellingham Theatre Guild, Skagit Valley College, Shakespeare Northwest, Opera Popolare, and Free Key Productions, among others. Her past roles include Joanne (Company), Adult Woman (Spring Awak-ening), Calpurnia (Julius Caesar), and the Baker’s Wife (Into the Woods). Most recently she has coordinated and performed in a series of concerts at a local winery. She would like to thank God, her sister Alisa, boyfriend Robert, and the cast of amazing friends who have supported and encouraged her along the way. Their patience with the process, enthusiasm for all of the projects, and unstinting support is valued more than words can say. Special thanks to voice coach and mentor Rob Viens, Bud, Alison, and the Mount Baker Theatre for coordinating a fantastic show!

REBECCA CORT (AUDREY II AP-PRENTICE PUPPE-TEER) is celebrating her second time work-ing with the precious Audrey II puppets – the first being at Redmond High School

three years ago, where she unexpectedly fell in love – and the opportunity to shadow a professional puppeteer is unreal to her. Recent credits: Belle in Bellingham (Bailey LaBelle) at WWU; 13! The Musical (Lucy) and A Chorus Line (Vicki) at RATA; For

Colored Girls (Yellow), Legally Blonde (Elle Woods), Little Shop of Horrors (Audrey II Puppeteer/Bum), Much Ado About Nothing (Messenger), The Wedding Singer (Linda) at RHS; Sweeney Todd (Beadle) at SecondStory Rep. Love to the cast, crew, directors, Ken Michels (who eagerly agreed to guide and teach her further wonders of puppetry), Alison Terry (for finally succumbing to her begging), Misty Doty, her best friends Quinn and Grace, her incredible vocal coach Kim Maguire, her endlessly support-ive parents, and whoever is kindly housing her during this production (TBD as of this writing). In her coming years of college at WWU she will be pursuing her passion for theatre and digital media. She is an avid fan of StarKid, corgis, and consuming her cast mates.

SHANE PATRICK HOFFMANN (ORIN, BERNSTEIN, LUCE, SNIP, and EVERYONE ELSE) is a Marysville native currently work-ing on his Bachelor Degree in theatre with an acting concentration

at Western Washington University, and has been training for almost ten years. Shane was most recently seen last year in Shoreline Community College’s production of Sweeney Todd as Jonas Fogg/Male Understudy. Previ-ous roles include Arpad Lazslo in She Loves Me, the Baker in Into the Woods, Audrey II in Little Shop, and countless others. Shane wishes to thank his parents for their contin-uous support, Jim Lortz for his mentorship, Susan Johnson for her vocal training help, the production team for being so wonderful to work with, and lastly, yet most important-ly, Jordan for the love, support, and being there whenever needed.

There are many terms you could use to describe Victorian Britain. “Free-spirited” would not be one of them. Try “rigid,” “re-served,” and, above all else, “proper.” Proper ladies and gentlemen were expected to abide by a complex, unyielding set of social expectations that dominated every aspect of life. Today, Victorian modesty may seem laughably excessive (The groom kissed the bride? Scandalous!), but in the 1800s, letting loose a little and indulging yourself, no mat-ter how strong the urge, simply wasn’t done. (Keep a stiff upper lip, old boy!)

With such a strong climate of repres-sion, it’s no surprise a book about gleefully discarding one’s own inhibitions became an instant hit. The surprise was who wrote it. At the time, Robert Louis Stevenson was a celebrated author of children’s adventure stories. He wrote swashbuckling classics like Treasure Island and Kidnapped, tales that were suspenseful and fun. When he pub-lished [The] Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, his fans were somewhat jolted. Imagine, if you will, J.K. Rowling pausing mid-Harry Potter series to write Psycho.

Stevenson had been toying with ideas for a story about the nature of good and evil for some time. In 1885, bedridden and ill, he woke from a nightmare with a few chilling scenes in his mind. According to his family, he feverishly wrote the initial story in less than two weeks while confined to bed. Legend has it that, unsatisfied with his first draft, he burned the manuscript to force

himself to start over from scratch. Many, if not most, people are already

familiar with the premise of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Henry Jekyll, a proper gentleman, invents a potion that physically and psycho-logically transforms him into Edward Hyde, a sociopathic murderer and altogether im-proper fellow. While Jekyll maintains a level head and a moral compass, Hyde is hot-tem-pered and cruel – simply put, Jekyll is a good man, and Hyde is an evil one. Things begin to spin out of control when the transforma-tions start happening on their own.

The story continues to fascinate us, more than 120 years since it first appeared. Various adaptations have added elements of comedy, science fiction, horror, and the supernatural, and many have explored the idea of She-Jekyll/She-Hyde, as well as gender-swapping combinations. There have been more than 100 film adaptations, not to mention those for television (you can thank Stevenson for the ol’ “split personality” plot twist in count-less detective stories), radio, and stage.

Page 23: Playbill for Little Shop of Horrors

It’s the stage, not the screen, where Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde truly shines. Live theatre is exciting in its own right, but experiencing a single actor embodying two polarized person-alities – characters that move, speak, and sing differently, and sometimes even interact – in real-time is positively thrilling. No camera tricks, no edits, no computer wizardry. There’s definitely no time to “feel out” the charac-ter before diving in – the leading man has to jump back and forth between roles like a

double-Dutch master. Add to that an intense soundtrack, a dark love triangle, and murder most foul, and you have an award-winning transformative formula of your very own. “This Is the Moment” to indulge yourself – we won’t judge.

Jekyll & Hyde, the gripping musical thriller, takes the MBT Main Stage Saturday, January 24, 2015, at 8 p.m. Many characters behave improperly – parental discretion is advised.

MBT Education Program

The Wade Bennett King Education Series is a community engagement

program provided by the theatre for public, private, and home schools in Whatcom, Skagit, Island, and upper Snohomish counties. This exceptional program enriches school curricula while providing students with the cultural experience that comes from early exposure to professional live performance. When available, study guides pertaining to each show are provided to teachers, giving them an opportunity to

use the shows as educational tools in their classrooms. Question-and-answer sessions are frequently offered after the shows, providing an opportunity for the students to interact directly with the actors.

During the 2013-2014 school year, the theatre hosted more than 15,600 students and teachers at performances ranging from

stunt dogs and African folktales to traditional stage plays and musicals. The Education Series often features stage adaptations of well-known children’s literature, providing an opportunity for young people to look at reading and stories in a whole new way. To borrow a quote from Faustworks Mask Theatre, the goal of the Education Series is to “excite the student to continue learning well beyond the performance they have just seen.” For many students this is the only live theater experience they have had.

Our 19th Education Series begins in October 2014 with Cirque Mechanics and extends through May 2015. Education brochures for the 2014-15 Season featured the names of all business sponsors and community donors whose support makes this program possible. MBT is dedicated to honoring and raising community awareness about the strong commitment our sponsors make to the children of Bellingham and surrounding areas. For more information about the Education Series please contact Alison C. Terry, Program Manager, at (360) 733-5793. The Education Series is sponsored by the Frank King Family in memory of their son Wade.

BT Members Are All Around YouM

Hundreds of people sitting near you in the audience are Mount Baker Theatre

members, who are giving the gift of entertainment to our community.

Ticket prices cover only about half the cost of presenting live theatre. By joining MBT, every time you attend a show you, too, can feel the joy of knowing you are participating in bringing great performances to Bellingham at ticket prices our community can afford.

MBT Members are preserving this gorgeous venueWe can enjoy tonight’s performance in this gorgeous theatre because local residents rescued Mount Baker Theatre in the 1980s, when private owners threatened to turn this exquisite historic building into a multiplex cinema. In response, far-seeing community members formed the non-profit organization we are inviting you to join. As a member, you will be helping to preserve Mount Baker Theatre as a venue that hosts and inspires creativity.

MBT Member Benefits enhancethe theatre experienceMore than 1,000 MBT members give an annual tax-deductible donation—from $50 to $10,000. To thank our members for their generosity in sharing their love of live theatre with their neighbors, we offer an array of membership benefits at each level.

THE MOUNT BAKER THEATRE was

the creation of a nationwide movement to

construct formidable theater buildings in the

hearts of American cities. Now, decades later,

the few remaining giant palaces of another era

are involved in a new movement, this time to

preserve a wonderful heritage and to restore

the structures for community use, performing

arts, and entertainment centers. In 1978 the

Mount Baker Theatre was placed on the Na-

tional Historic Landmark Register. Through the

cooperative efforts of the City of Bellingham,

Whatcom County, the State of Washington, the

citizen-based non-profit Mount Baker Theatre

Center and numerous private donations, the

historic landmark underwent extensive resto-

ration and remodeling of the 1509-seat facility

to assure a permanent and useful place in the

cultural life of the community. It remains true

to its heritage of stage presentations and com-

munity use events.

The construction of the Theatre itself was

a monumental task, employing several different

contractors and more than 80 craftsmen experi-

enced in stone masonry, carpentry, and plaster

casting. The 130–by-250-foot theatre was out-

fitted to accommodate vaudeville stage produc-

tions on a 26-by-75-foot stage under a 42-foot

proscenium arch. Dressing and practice rooms

behind the stage were connected by a tunnel to

the orchestra pit, and the best in counter-weight

lighting systems were used to enhance the live

performances.
