GAME ON! Is winter over yet? By the time you read this we will be well into spring, thank goodness, but what a wet winter it was! The weather caused us all kinds of challenges…whew, but that is over! So GAME ON!! It seems to me this phrase is used mostly as a “challenge” or a “throw down” for a sports competition, but actually, I use this phrase a lot when I want to challenge myself or our Parks and Recreation team during some project or assignment at work OR at PLAY!! This also happens to be the theme for this year’s July is Parks and Recreation Month this summer through the National Recreation and Park Association. How appropriate! Playing any type of game can be super fun whether it is a board game, cards, video games, sports and more! Games can also be played with tons of people, teams or just by your-self...how great is that? As we head into summer let’s put our “Game Face” on and plan on having some great times in our parks; whether it’s a ball game at Capaha Ballfield with our new Cape Catfish, a little league ball game with the family, or by signing up for our “Corporate Games” being held at the end of summer. Get engaged and have a fun-filled summer! Got Game?! We do!

What is your coaching background? I started coaching youth track in the early 2000’s. I also coached track and cross-country at the high school level for 10 years.
Why do you coach recreational sports? It is a sport I am passionate about and enjoy the structure of the program and seeing youth improve physically and develop friendships and cooperation with peers.
Any advice for new coaches? Keep it fun and diverse.
How important is winning in recreational sports? How do you define winning? Winning, to me, is doing the best you possibly can. You cannot control what others do. But you can control how hard you work and never give up. If you are victorious, great. If not, be proud that you laid it all on the line knowing you did your best. If we only judge performance on wins and losses, we have missed the point of athletics and recreational sport.
Any words of wisdom? “Once you have decided that winning isn’t everything, you become a winner.” - George A. Sheehan“Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be.” - George Sheehan

Special Events in City ParksGroups or organizations wishing to host a Special Event in one of our City parks will need to complete an application in advance of reserving any facilities. Please contact our administrative office for additional details or to obtain an application. Our Parks and Recreation Main Office is located in Arena Park at the A. C. Brase Arena at 410 Kiwanis Drive and can be reached by phone at 573.339.6340. Please allow 30-60 days (minimum) prior to your event for review and approval. Special Events are any events that are open to the public, held on City park property and include but are not limited to the following:
Commemorative Tree ProgramHere’s an opportunity to commemorate a special person or occasion while helping beautify the community at the same time. A commemorative tree can be given in memory or in honor of special people, groups or occasions. Gifts of $350 or more will be used to purchase and plant a specified tree with an appropriately-inscribed memorial stone, which will be placed in the ground at the foot of the commemorative trees. Each stone will list the person, group or occasion that is being honored and the tree’s common name. Contact the Parks and Recreation Department for details. Trees will be planted from October 1- April 30.
Adopt a ParkDid you know that your civic club, church or business organization can “Adopt a Park”? The City of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department and our Keep Cape Beautiful Committee are looking for interested groups who have a special connection to one of our City Parks or Trails and would like to be involved in improvement projects throughout the year. At a minimum, we ask that interested groups help clean up your park or trail section at least four times per year. We will provide the equipment needed and recognize your group’s efforts! Plus, your name will appear on a sign posted within the park or on the trail. This makes for a great scouting project, a business team building opportunity or may fit the bill for your civic club goals. We have over 25 parks and miles of trails just waiting to be adopted. Please contact us today if you are interested or if you have additional questions.
City CemeteriesThe City of Cape Girardeau Cemetery Office is located at 1836 Cemetery Drive. For information you may contact the cemetery office at 573.334.1917 or the main Parks and Recreation Office at 573.339.6340. New Lorimier Cemetery was established in 1877. Most of these plots are family plots in blocks of four or eight. New Lorimier Cemetery is home to the “Temple of Rest” Mausoleum established in 1917. All crypts and plots have been purchased.
Fairmount Cemetery was established in 1883. It sets adjacent to New Lorimier Cemetery and is also a family cemtery.

PARKS, RECREATION AND STORMWATER PROJECTS UPDATE – A MESSY WINTER!The passage of PRS2, as this initiative is simply known, was with a landslide of success. The initiative received 81 percent voter approval a year ago, as the tax was set to expire on December 31, 2018. We are grateful for your support as many more amazing community projects will be completed through 2033. This will include one of our signature projects, an indoor aquatic center to replace the aging Central Municipal Pool. In addition to that, there are many more community wide parks, trails and stormwater projects that are on the list. The winter was incredibly challenging for construction projects, but here is an update on where we are with these plans for new and improved facilities.
CAPAHA PARK MASTER PLAN (Phase 2, 3 and Ballfield Improvements) The Capaha Park Conceptual Master Plan was completed in 2012 and work has been ongoing since that date. We completed phase one in 2015 and initiated improvements to the Capaha Baseball Field in 2016 and 2017 (ahead of schedule). Our Public Works Department also completed a watershed and stormwater study for Capaha Park which helped provide planning assistance for future pond improvements. Capaha Phase Two has been initiated for improvements to the

lower pavilion area, the addition of a new splash pad and restroom, which we hope to complete this summer! Phase Three improvements will include enhancements to the west side of the park beginning with the Dan Cotner Amphitheatre seating area and accessibility, the Rose Garden, and replacement of the pavilion and playground equipment on that side of the park. New walking paths, seating and accessibility will provide park goers with improved mobility to travel around park amenities. Phase Three planning is going on now through the summer.

CAPE’S COMMUNITY GARDENS S. Fountain St, Shawnee Park Center, Washington ParkThe City of Cape Girardeau Community Garden team is excited to get their “green thumbs” limbered up this planting season. Our Free Garden Workshop Series classes have been occurring monthly since January at the Shawnee Park Center and highlight all kinds of opportunities for you to GROW GREEN this spring and summer! The classes have been packed so if you have not taken advantage of this wonderful educational program, now is your chance! The City partners with the Missouri Extension Services Master Gardener program, SEMO’s Agricultural/Horticultural Department and the Charles H. Hutson Nursery to provide garden activities, but we need volunteers! Please come join our Community Garden team by calling our Parks and Recreation Department at 573.339.6340!
ARENA PARK MASTER PLAN
Arena Park is one of our oldest, most used and versatile park facilities in Cape Girardeau. This 90 acre regional park houses both indoor event space and a multitude of outdoor amenities. The park is currently undergoing a large storm water improvement phase which includes channeling excess water underground through new drain pipes to help prevent or limit flooding in the park. The new box culverts are designed to move more water quickly to the Cape LaCroix Creek during major rain events. Overall improvements to Arena Park amenities would not be possible without a plan to help mitigate the flooding that occurs. Many event organizers and programs like the SEMO District Fair run the risk of canceling or losing attendance should a major rain event prevent participation, not to mention damage to our buildings, equipment or the grounds. These storm water improvements will allow us to continue with our park master plan to make the park more accessible and available to host additional year round special events and activities.

Giving back to the community is ingrained in our business model. We want to be a part of the local community, to give when and where we can. These simple practices promote goodwill within the community and it is a way for us to give back, whether it be with ice cold water during the summer months, promotional marketing, sampling events, signage or just a friendly handshake and a smile. We want to be not only a strong brand, but with the realization that we live here, we shop here and our kids go to school here, we want to set an example for the community we are already a part of.
Our partnership with Cape Parks & Rec has been a growing and blossoming relationship. As Cape Parks & Rec has grown, so have we, and as Cape Parks & Rec has strengthened, so has our relationship.
