The only problem seems to be that the contractor only hired a cutting machine for a day, so the whole town’s roads are full of sharp edged squares in the road with sharp (too deep for low profile tires) edges. Go slow. What is not so positive is that the residents of Eerstegeluk is struggling with potholes on their main access road and on the R555, as well as a terrible sewerage leak at Longtill. There is also the same sewerage leak problem at Elephants Hill in Burgersfort. See page 2.

BatubatseHawkers march

The Batubatse Hawkers Organisation (not to be confused with the Greater Tubatse HawkersAssociation) under the leadership of Mr Jackson Tjatjie (with pointing finger in photographbottom left) staged a march at the Burgersfort Civic Centre last week Thursday.

A memorandum was handed over to municipal officials and the group demanded aresponse to it within 14 days.

In the memorandum the group demand the resignation of the Mayor, Municipal Manager, the Chief Whip and Councillor for Ward 18 because all the money allocated to themuniciaplity for building of roads and electricity were not spent. In the memorandum theyalso demand an investigation into stall permit fees that was paid through a rival organisationand that pots, mealie meal and fruit that were allegedly damaged by a developer at the oldtaxi rank at the Ga Khadima centre on 11 June last year, be refunded. They also demandthat the old tax rank at this centre, adajacent to Burgersfort Mall, be repaired as they haveno shelter any more from where to do business.

Furthermore the group also demand protection from outsiders and clean water andtoilet facilities where they operate. Lastly they do not want to pay any fees for permits“because there are lots of stories about them”.

Help! It stinksPlatinum Gazette was contacted this weekby two residents from Burgersfort andEerstegeluk. Although living worlds apart inthe same municipality and districtmunicipality, they complained about thesame thing.

For them there was no question aboutthe state of the district and state of themunicipality. The place stinks.

A letter from Eerstegeluk complainedabout the potholes from the R555 toEerstegeluk. When the newspaper travelledon this road, the potholes were not muchworse than a few months ago, which meansnothing was done to fix it, or it was donebadly. Sure enough the reporterencountered an entrepreneur, using orangecool drink crates as cones and a little spade,“repairing” the worst potholes with ordinarymud.

What the reporter also saw was a workteam repairing water reticulation pipes nextto the road, which was positive as the letteralso complained of a water shortage.Travelling further on this road, the reportersoon came to Longtill and lo and behold, aterrible stench wafted through the vehicle’sopen windows just where you enter Longtillbefore you reach the school. The road isalso wet. The stench diminished anddisappeared and other parts of the town arenot affected. Driving back to the entrance ofthe town the source of the stench was soonevident. It seems if a broken sewerage linenext to the road is spilling sewerage onto thesidewalk and into the road, some of thesewerage disappearing into the storm waterdrainage (leading to the river? Cholera?Nobody knows).

Yes this was the source of the reader’scomplaint about sewerage.

From there the reporter travelled toElephants Hill Burgersfort, prompted by twoemails from a reader who cannot take the

stench any more. Struggling a bit to find thehouse, the reporter stopped to enquire theroute from Mr Henk Smith, who was busy inhis garden. He explained the reporter’sbewilderment by saying that although aboutten houses have the same number, theyhave an additional alphabetical indicator. Hishouse was number F and the reporter waslooking for number L. Inquiring about thereporter’s mission, Mr Smith invited himinside the stand, as he had the sameproblem as the reader who sent the email.Workmen were busy at that moment to tryand fix a sewerage problem in Mr Smith’srented property. Raw sewerage wasbubbling from the ground, with theaccompanying not-so-subtle smell. Theworkmen explained that the problem wasnot at Mr Smith’s side of the fence, but ablockage in the municipal line outside theproperty, forcing the sewerage to leak intoMr Smith’s stand.

Finding number L was a cinch after that, just a few houses up the street. The readerwas not home, but his wife showed thereporter around. No leaking sewerage onthe property, but the same stench. Sheshowed the newspaper where the seweragewas leaking from a manhole on the otherside of the fence on public land. Accordingto the emails of her husband numerousrequests to come and fix the problem tovarious government institutions did not elicitany response, apart from a TLB that made away for the sewerage to flow in anotherdirection ...

So, the newspaper contacted the GreaterTubatse Municipality who promptly replied. They were not responsible, the SekhukhuneDistrict Municipality was responsible to sortout the problem. The newspaper dulyrequested their comment, and admit it wasjust before deadline. As soon as a responseis received, it will be published.

Mr MM Tlakeli said: “It is too difficult right now. I’m not travelling asmuch as before. That is the biggest change I’ve made to cope withthe high petrol price”. With him is Mrs Pretty Mahlakoane.

Mnr. Henk Dreyer sê: “Koop goedkoper karreen gebruik ryklubs. Ons is deel van ‘n ryklub.Jy moet net. Ons het ook klaar die groot karverkoop. Jy kan nie baklei nie, jy moet maaringooi al is die petrolprys hoog. Elektriesekarre is die oplossing”.

Ms Minnie Pholwane said: “It is killing us. Weare now just giving out money. This economyis killing us - everything is expensive. Wethought the petrol price would be one of thethings Jacob Zuma’s speech and budget forthe year would bring relief on, but now it isjust killing us”.

Mr Lucas Mafologela said: “It’s terrible. I’mtravelling from Moroke to Burgersfort everyday. I just have to pay it. There is nothing Ican do”.

Ms Leticia Sanderson said: “We spend lesson clothing, food and utilities so that we cantravel”.

Left: Mr John Botlhole said: “If is difficult. I tryto travel less, but you still need a car and stillneed to travel. It is not always safe to travelwith a taxi”.

Above: Mr Thami Mthobisa said: “The petrolhikes are killing us. You have tocompromise. I used to buy clothes moreoften. Now you just have to save longerbefore buying anything”.

Regs: Mnr.

On 6 March 2013 the petrol price rose with81c/l. This means that in Gauteng the pricebroke the R13 barrier. This is the highest levelever in South Africa. The increase was due to the rise in theinternational oil price and the weaker Rand.Various levies also increased and willcontinue to impact the price in April. We asked drivers how they are coping afterthis latest increase.

• Service your vehicle regularly to ensure bestfuel economy. Correctly maintained cars canoperate more efficiently and help reduceCO2 emissions.

• Check your tyre pressure monthly. Under-inflated tyres can increase fuel consumptionby up to 40%.

• Ensure that there are no holes in thevehicle's exhaust.

• Remove unnecessary weight from yourvehicle. The heavier the car, the more fuel itconsumes.

• Close your windows at higher speeds andremove empty roof racks. This will reducewind resistance and can lower your fuelconsumption by up to 10%.

• Use air conditioning sparingly. Unnecessaryuse increases fuel consumption and CO2emissions by up to 5%.

• Reduce idling. If you are going to stop formore than 60 seconds, turn off your vehicle’sengine.

Mr Terence Tilburn said: “What can you do? You’ve got to pay it. Ekgaan nou ‘n klein karretjie koop. Wat wel ‘n probleem is, is hoe diedrankpryse nou opgegaan het”. By hom is Mnr Wessel Ferreira.

Mr Brilliant Malepe, a taxi driver, said: “We are experiencingproblems. Work is slow. Petrol is expensive. It is not right. Petrol nowtakes the whole food budget”.

Mr Bruce Mashaba said: “It is now almost R13 a litre of petrol! It isplenty of money. I’m taking my kids to school every day and my wifehas to go to work. It touches me because the budget at home did notincrease with the petrol price”. With him are Shadi, Bruna andLebogang.

Mr Eddy Phasha said: “It is very difficult. I’mtrying to drive less and not to speed. I alsotry to reduce my fuel consumption with how Idrive. This means sometimes being late!”.

Me. By haar is Marissa.

Mnr.

Left: Mr Makgopa Dunga said: “It makes a big difference the highpetrol price. We don’t have money. It is very difficult for us as drivers. We have cut costs to buy petrol. When it comes to taxi’s they put uptheir prices, but they never come down if the petrol price is reducedwith a few cents”.

Mr Donald Swartland said: “Sacrifice is how we cope. Instead ofputting 5 litres of petrol in the car we now put in 4 litres. If it is adownhill we put the car in neutral and we don’t speed”. Behind him isMr Abraham Mkhabela. They drive a taxi.
