Kgautswane seems to have an immense attraction for overseasvisitors and students. The Kgautswane Thusong Service Centre becomes the spillaround which visitors plan their visits. The centre is home basefor 12 German volunteers who are in South Africa on a one yearprogramme. Recently professors from Tanzania, Kenya, Namibiaand Botswana also visited the centre to share ideas and learnmore about how they operate. At the moment it is also home to Mr Casey Mickelson (25) fromMichigan in the United States. He was considering Ghana as hisAfrican destination when a friend told him about Kgautswane.Mickelson is a full time paramedic and had just finished hismaster’s degree in Business Administration. He is visitingKgautswane as the last step to finish his Global BusinessExperience qualification. In Kgautswane he visits ill patients and assists in fund raising forlocal schools, créches and much more.Mickelson said: “Life in South Africa is relaxed compared to life athome. Mr George Boshomane said: “We must closethe shops so that everyone can go and votein the elections. I support Cosatu’s call. If wedon’t go out to vote our children will suffer”.

Ms Thabitha Mashaba said: “They must notmake it a non-trading holiday and have allthe shops closed. People have enough timeto go and vote before and after work. It isunnecessary to close”.

Ms Dikeledi Mathonsi said: “Yes, I supportthem. All the shops must close because it isa voting day. Perhaps if some people havefinished voting they can go to work to earnthe Mandelas. On that election day peopleshould also remember our hero Mandela andgo to vote”.

Me. Nastasja Schutte sê: “Dis belaglik! Moetdie hele land nou tot stilstand kom? Wat vannet halfdag werk?”

Mr Piet Aphane said: “The shops, restaurants and taverns must be open. Lifestill needs to go on. If they close the peoplecannot buy food. I think there is enough timefor those who are working to still go andvote”.

Mr Nelson Masitha said: “No, no, no! Wheremust we go to release the stress aftervoting? Elections are not forced. It is apersonal thing. People who work can go casttheir vote before or after work”.

Mr Lifie Tlhaka said: “Everything should beclosed on election day. If we keep shopsopen the people will not be able to exercisetheir voting rights. We can buy this and thatthe day before. After all, it is the nationalelection”.

Mr MO Mabilo said: “It is good to be open onelection day. At tjaila time the workers cango and vote”.

Ms Meta Komane said: “Shops must open. Itwill be difficult for people who do not vote ifnothing is open. It must be a normal day tohelp our economy. Some people don’t voteand they must be able to shop. Schoolsshould actually also be open, but it is aproblem that many schools are used asvoting stations”.

Mnr Petrus Mokoena sê: “Die winkels entaverns moet oopmaak anders wat gaan onsheeldag doen? Mense sal vrek van diehonger as hulle nie iets op daardie dag kankoop nie”.

Ms Mama Maile said: “Everything must beopen and people working must simply go tovote before they go to work”.

South Africa is preparing for the nationalelection on 7 May 2014.On 25 February President Jacob Zumasigned a proclamation which declared thedate of the election. According to Section 2Aof the Public Holiday Act he also declared theday a public holiday. The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu)reacted to the proclamation with a call tohave the public holiday converted into a non-trading public holiday.“Cosatu has for many year demanded thatcommemorative public holidays and electiondays should be declared non-trading publicholidays,” said acting general secretary BhekiNtshalintshali. He added that they call for this “in order toensure that all workers, especially those insectors such as farming and retail, should befree to join commemorative events and tovote, without fear of disciplinary charges fromtheir employers”.In certain sectors such as emergencyservices that cannot close down for the day, individuals are granted special votes that willenable them to vote on a different date than 7May. Cosatu has already submitted noticesrecognised under the Labour Relations Act toprotect workers who refuse to work on 1 Maywhich is a public holiday - Workers Day inSouth Africa.Platinum Gazette asked readers what theythink about the call for a non-trading publicholiday on 7 May.
