Computing Platform Trends Compute servers Steady migration to servers or clusters running Windows or Linux Multicore x64 processors from Intel and AMD Linux dominant; steady growth of Windows HPC Servers 64-bit OS now standard

Negligible footprint on other systems (e.g., legacy UNIX, Itanium) Emergence of GP-GPUs for accelerated processing Desktop workstations / Interactive systems Windows 64-bit dominant, 32-bit waning Smaller, but significant, use of Linux nearly all 64-bit Emergence of GP-GPUs for accelerated processing ANSYS Strategy: Focus on 64 bit Windows and Linux for both desktop and compute servers. Continue to focus on multicore processor optimization. Pursue GPU acceleration where feasible.

PresenterPresentation NotesStart with some basic information on our computing platform strategy, which is closely tied to the trends in our installed base and in the industry.Starting on the compute server side HPC for technical computing has for many years been dominated by clusters built on standard x86 processors from Intel or AMD, mostly based on LINUX (but with increasing focus on Windows clusters, esp. at the mid-market or lower end). These systems are replacing older proprietary UNIX solutions like IBM Power processors or the Itanium processor, for example and both ANSYS and our key partners are moving away from these platforms. On the desktop, the clear majority in our installed base are running 64-bit or 32-bit Windows, with a minority but important subgroup using Linux. SO: Our strategy is to focus our software development and performance tuning on these key platforms - x86/x64 Intel/AMD processors, running Windows and LINUX. Some new trends on the horizon like GPU computing, where we are working with both NVIDIA and AMD and have some initial capability today but workhorse systems for CAE are still these X86 based clusters, and our focus is on parallel software algorithms to exploit increasing cores counts and cluster size.

ANSYS 15.0 - LINUX Support Notes

ANSYS supports Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and SUSE Enterprise Linux (SLES / SLED) RHEL 5 and RHEL 6 SLES / SLED 11 Server and Desktop editions are supported. Desktop editions recommended for interactive use. Server editions require additional drivers and tools to support interactive use. Home editions are not supported.

ANSYS does not support other compatible Linux distributions Fedora, Scientific Linux, Debian, Ubuntu, Oracle LINUX, etc. We can not sustain certification and technical support of multiple Linux distributions Stability issues have been encountered on some open-source Linux We will only provide support on issues that can be reproduced on our certified RedHat

    and SUSE Linux releases.

PresenterPresentation NotesAs noted on the slide:Our client UI's do not run on standard, out of the box server editions of SUSE or Red Hat. The customer must install NVidia/ATI proprietary drivers from the desktop platform, possibly change kernel options and install OpenMotif. A safer course of action for our customers would be to use thedesktopeditions for our client UI's and either desktop and server editions for the batch solvers.

Not covered on the slide:Our Windows support is for all by home editions. Home Editions are not supported.

PresenterPresentation NotesSGI Altix UV is an x86-based hardware platform that uses the SGI ProPack 5 operating system, which is a variant of Linux. This machine uses SGI Numalink technology to make a cluster of x86 nodes appear as a single SMP system image. Using the PerfBoost component of ProPack 5, the SGI AltixUV invokes SGIs proprietary MPI software (called MPT), which will achieve higher performance with the Numalink technology, compared to the MPI tools that are a standard part of the ANSYS x86/Linux builds. However, ProPack 5 and PerfBoost have not been certified and tested by ANSYS. SGI has demonstrated that PerfBoost works with ANSYS products, but ANSYS support on this platform will be limited to supporting problems that can be reproduced on a standard x86/Linux cluster.

Note that RHEL 6 does not support Itanium. (Red Hat dropped support for Itanium at 6).

Support for Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 includes:- Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 Suite, Windows HPC Pack 2008 R2 Enterprise/Express.
