Although our British summer has been and promises to be a damp affair there has been an unprecedented level ofmajor events that have added some much needed glamour and interest to ourpersonal and professional lives.

This issue contains some very interesting news about some of the local people, Melissa Rudd and Andrew Coe to name but two, who are involved in the Euro 2012 football championships or the Olympic Games.

Regular readers will no doubt be looking forward to Part 2 of Sharon Wright’s insight into her life and her times with Dragon’s Den. We’ve added some information about other business ‘gurus’ who can often help provide a ‘third party’ way for business improvement.

Inside TheDragon’s DenPart 2. (Continued from last issue) Sharon Wrightreveals what happened after she’d realised her deal with James Cann andDuncan Bannatynewasn’t what it seemed. At what point did you decide to start pulling out of the deal with James and Duncan?

It was after James denied trying to charge me a fee in front of Duncan, I felt a fool and that I’d caused trouble and hadmisunderstood. He later invited me back to his office to tell me they would becharging me a fee. At first I thought maybe it was just me he was doing this to but later found out this wasn’t the case it was his normal practice of business. I felt hurt, humiliated, I doubted myself and feltcompletely floored from the stress.Self-belief is the most important ingredient to be successful; I’d never doubted myself up until this point and so decided I couldn’t work for a man I didn’t trust or respect. Duncan was angry with everything that had happened, I should have spoken to him earlier but I felt I had already caused trouble and lost his respect. This couldn’t have been further from the truth but the fact James denied it made me look an idiot.

case and I hold no remorse for Duncan, I still have the same huge respect for him and all he has achieved.

How did you go about turning things around for Magnamole after this?

I went on to sell 10% for £100,000 initially and continued to sell Magnamole into the USA and to the third tier of my strategy, the homebuyers market. Every entrepreneur knows the right time to sell their company and that time came for me in February last year when an American firm bought me out completely.

What made you decide to write your book and how did you go about this?

I decided to write my book Mother Of Invention which can be purchased via my website www.sharonwright.com to warn others of my experience. I had been on such an emotional rollercoaster of highs and lows but I’d never read of these experiences in any other entrepreneurial book. I wanted to give a heart on the sleeve account knowing other people would relate to it. I talk openly about my breakdown, my Bulimia, Dragon’s Den, how I went about taking an idea onto a commercial reality. I wanted to give other inventors knowledge of how to start and where to go etc. However, the most important reason for writing the book was to tell people what really happened after the Dragon’s Den show. I did approach publishers and they commented it was a great read with unbelievablecontent but due to the controversy in the book they were scared it would be pulled from the shelves. But that didn’t stop me, I knew I had to tell people what really happened to me so I became my own publisher and have had the most amazing reviews. It has been that popular I decided to write the follow up book which I have

What made you reject Duncans offer to invest in you alone?

Once I’d made my decision to terminate the contract which took a lot of strength, I felt like I had held a gun to Duncan’s head. It takes a lot for me to make important decisions but once I have I can’t be persuaded to change my mind. All this happened over a period of 5 months and to be honest I felt I’d had a weight lifted from my shoulders.

Have you had any contact with the Dragons since?

Yes I have spoken to Duncan on several occasions. I was taking James Caan to court for defamation of my character. I decided to tell my story via the papers so that nobody else made the same mistake I did and so people were warned of how James did his business. That way they could make their own choice because if I’d had the knowledge before the show I certainly would never have considered doing business with James. Duncan had agreed to be a key witness for the court

S h a r o n W r i g h t P t . 2

nearly finished. It will shock people, it will help and inspire others but the most important thing for me was to let people make their own minds up on whether I made the right choice.

Do you have any advice for budding entrepreneurs?

Yes I do, follow my four simple ingredients to success; self-belief, preparation and planning, dedication and that extra sprinkle of self-belief. Never give up, don’t be afraid to ask for help and support, spend money on a reputable lawyer and trust yourinstinct (if in doubt go without).

So do you have any regrets?

Absolutely not, if I was in the same situation I would do exactly the same again. If it wasn’t for the whole experience with Dragons Den I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I learnt so many lessons on the journey and hope that others will benefit from reading the book. I still believe Dragons Den is a great programme and would recommend anyone to participate if they get the opportunity. My advice would be to buy a copy of my book, I wrote a full chapter on how I prepared for the perfect pitch. As for the situation with James I don’t regret telling my story to all that would listen and I’m just glad he is no longer doing the show. Even thebreakdown and my admittance to myeating disorder was a positive experience. I had the illness on and off for many years, it was my way of coping with stress so if I hadn’t had the breakdown it would all still be a secret and I may not have been here to tell the story. I hope I contribute to removing the stigma as I know so many people suffer from this terrible illness.

Have you any advice for James?

Ummm, he did try to make contact once he heard I was writing a book, in fact he sent me a text whilst I was on holiday writing the book asking to meet for dinner and a chat, obviously I ignored all contact. I had many of his associates advising me not to write the book, his daughter, his lawyers, his staff, work colleages etc. They all had the same message - that I would regret it and that it would damage myreputation and my business. I included all that in the book for people to see what I had to deal with. I feel happy James is no longer on the show and my advice to him would be never underestimate me, what goes around comes around.

Sharon’s book ‘Mother of Invention’ is available from her websitewww.sharonwright.com where she talks in great detail about her experiences on Dragons’ Den and what has happened since the show.

Richard Carlson was an Americanauthor, psychotherapist, andmotivational speaker, who rose to fame with the success of his book, Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff…and it’s all Small Stuff – published in 1997. One of the many famous quotes for this record breaking book was, ‘One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves, or for others, thinking that life should be fair, or that someday it will be. It’s not and it won’t. When we make this mistake we tend to spend a lot of time wallowing and/or complaining about what’s wrong with life. “It’s not fair,” we complain, not realizing that, perhaps, it was never intended to be.”

Business Networking

cost effective way to build ongoingrelationships and make new friends and there are no shortage

of opportunities in and around Norwich to attend events.

Networking Tips

1. The goal of networking should be to help other people

2. It’s far more important to understand their needs before you tell them about yours

3. You don’t need to know the most people, just the right people.

4. Don’t expect anything

5. Don’t leave networking to chance

networking groups is Norwich Kitty, their approach is similar to others in that they meet most weeks but very different in some ways in that the atmosphere is much more relaxed at the event with the organisers making your company ‘pitch’ for you – a blessing for those relatively new to business and networking. There are no weekly fees to attend Norwich Kitty and annual membership is only £89, to encourage participation and cost effective networking. A feature of the Kitty group is that they back up the events with awebsite that takes networking past the weekly meeting. For example allmembers are encouraged to listthemselves in the Business Directory and contribute to the various BusinessForums, there are even sections onOffers and Property.

www.norwichkitty.com

One thing is for sure, networking works and there are hundreds of successful case studies of local businesses going from strength to strength through this old-fashioned but very effective marketing channel.

If you would like more information onlocal networking organisations and events email us at:[email protected]

6. Go beyond your industry

7. Don’t dismiss anyone as irrelevant

For the early riser the BNI have a proven track record with their figures estimating that in the UK and Ireland alone, there are 611 BNI Chapters that in 2011 gave 670,222 referrals, leading to business worth £269 million.BNI meetings tend to start at about 7am and are in the same location each week- regular weeklyattendance is a must. he massive (and ever growing) power and influence of the global broadcast and print media has

often seen local football fans without a voice, other than on match days – which come and go so quickly. The humour and dedication of the football fan is insome way similar to that of many localbusiness owners who have to endurepressure and disappointment in directdisproportion to rewards and pleasure!!! One thing they have in common is their love for their chosen cause. Success and profit are often very distant cousins but

be well received. The first issue of Kick It Off for the 2012/13 season will be available to celebrate City’s prestige friendly against Ajax at Carrow Road on 31 July. There is no fixed date for the launch of the first fanzine but they were perhaps at their most popular in the late 1980’s. It is felt by many that the introduction of increased television and internet access to football clubs contributed to the significant decrease of printed fanzines – often a welcome source of humour and irreverent comment for the hard pressed but always loyal fans. Whilst the many websites and forums dedicated to The Canaries are enjoyable and well written the team behind the original and now revived Kick It Off are convinced that this somewhat ‘retro’ look at the fortunes of East Anglia’s premier football club (Ed: little dig at Ip5w1ch) will

Successful Negotiating If you - then I...The art of successfulbusiness negotiations

ost business transactionsdepend on agreement on price and product/service delivery

between the supplier and the customer. This mainly applies at the vital ‘first deal’ stage but the principle is relevant during every transaction. The main difference is that subsequent sales have more of an implied rather than a direct negotiation stage.

We asked Glenn Hoy of TIMEAssociates his views on the often misunderstood process of business negotiation.

His initial comments outlined the basic principles, “Before you make any

perhaps I can give a bit by paying earlier so that they gain as well. You may already know business people (as a customer or supplier of theirs) who are foreverchanging the companies they deal with – saving a few pounds can lead to a lot more unproductive work in the future.Articles of this type can be a bit too ‘theoretical’ so here’s some Top Tips from TIME Associates to give you an easy negotiating process to follow:

- Be willing to negotiate in the first place- Go prepared- Don’t get emotionally involved- Always use the “if you do this, then I can do that” position- Don’t leave the other person feeling as if they’ve been cheated

If you feel that you are making lots ofpresentations and getting involved in lots of negotiations but are not clinching enough business deals then PLAT4ORM magazine can provide you - its readers - with some FREE advice on this subject.

Simply email your contact information to: [email protected]. We will then arrange for Glenn Hoy of TIME Associates to contact you and arrange a confidential meeting.

presentation of costs you must bethoroughly prepared – knowing what your prospective customer wants to achieve as well as what you want to sell them. For example it may be that his currentsupplier is becoming very lapse ondelivering goods on time. In this instance your position should be based onmeeting (and even exceeding) hisexpectations about delivery. And just think a potential deal that does not depend on youreducing your prices!”

As an overview, successful negotiations should have a benefit to both parties so in the situation where price becomes the deal maker/breaker as a customer you should ask yourself if you are getting the best possible price or are you getting the lowest possible price. There is a difference. With the ‘best possible’ scenario your supplier will look forward to having a sustainable and mutually profitable relationship with you. One that means you can build mutual trust and you’ll often find that the supplier becomes one that ‘goes the extra mile’without you having to ask or chase.

When you do a deal that in your heart you know is too far in your favour you can either take the extra ‘profit’ and short term gain or perhaps think to yourself these seem like good people to work with
