Letter from the Minister

Dear Friends

By the time our next magazine appears, theOlympics will be over, and the Paralympicsjust begun. In 1 Corinthians 9: 24 we are told,

“Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but onlyone receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it.”

In the Olympics / Paralympics there are medals for the firstthree places. Winning is determined by skill, fitness, power,endurance, tactical ability and mental focus – the same factorsaccount for success in sport for able-bodied and disabledathletes. The self-respect that each athlete gains fromqualifying for the Olympics / Paralympics is enormous, but no-one qualifies for the games on their own – behind each athlete isa coach, a sponsor, a medical team, a family… For each athlete,much has been given and given up… and it all rides on the finaloutcome. As I have heard one past Olympian say this week, noone remembers who came fourth.

In our race, the one we run for our Lord, we too must haveendurance and tactical abilities; we must be focused on our goals.We run the race to spread the Word of God and to fight againstinjustice in the world in whatever way we can. And we do not dothis alone, we run in company with all our fellow Christians hereand all over the world.

As we look forward to celebrating with athletes from all cornersof the world their sporting achievements, let us remember thatwe too have a goal to achieve.

Our prize is the gold of heaven.

Hayes Mothers’ & Toddlers’ ClubWe welcome all babies and children under school age, accompanied

by their parents, grandparents or carers, to our club on Fridayafternoons between 2 and 4 pm during term time. The fee is £1 perfamily – tea, squash and biscuits are provided.

This is a time when adults can meet up, while the children in their careare busy playing with toys and activities in the company of otherchildren.

Thank you

The Flower Festival was wonderful and the arrangements inspired!What a lot of talent we have in our church and among those around us

in Hayes; I thank everyone who made it such a wonderful occasion.Many people travelled quite a distance to come and see the displays, andmany came from our community to wonder at the beauty of God’screation and the talent that displayed it so well.

I am looking forward to the continuation of our celebrations with thefilms on Saturday 7th July; many of you may remember I’m quite a fanof the seven dwarfs! I’m also looking forward to the Scalextric racing!

With many thanks to all those involved who have and who are working sohard!

A mother was teaching her 3 year old daughter the Lord's prayer.For several evenings at bedtime she repeated it after her mother.

One night she said she was ready to solo. The mother listened withpride as she carefully enunciated each word right up to the end

"Lead us not into temptation" she prayed, "but deliver us some E-mail,Amen".

Christian Aid Walk 2012May 20th saw Mike and I boarding the train at Hayes to do stewardingfor the Christian Aid walk “Circle the City”. This year we were at St.Olave’s church, Hart Street. This church is dedicated to the saint andalso to King Olave of Norway who helped defend London in 1014 bypulling away its bridge - hence the rhyme “London Bridge is fallingdown”. St. Olave’s is a rare example of the mediæval churches thatexisted before the Great Fire of London in 1666.

The church was severely damaged in the bombing of World War II, butwas lovingly restored in the 1950s. The tiny graveyard is said tocontain some killed by the Great Plague in 1665. Samuel Pepys is alsoburied here.

We signed many forms throughout the day. One of the first people tocome through the door, with his dog, was John Keys who haspreached a number of times at HFC.

Mike and I really enjoyed the day spent at St. Olave’s, meeting lots offolks, some from different places.

The taxi driver who took us to the church in the morning didn’t chargeus, but said to give the fare to Christian Aid. That kind gesture was agood start to the day.

DronesThe Baptist, Methodist and URC report "Drones - Ethical Dilemmas inthe Application of Military Force" is now available on line. This reporthas been well received by our churches central committees and willbe the subject of debate at the Methodist Conference and URCGeneral Assembly in July.

Drones are perceived by NATO partners to offer a key role in NATOcounter-insurgency strategy. Less well discussed or understood is thenature of UK involvement in the targeted killing of known (orsuspected) insurgents with RAF drones in Afghanistan. The media areincreasingly interested in drones. Demonstrations around dronefactories in the UK have attracted significant support for people fromour churches. On 11 May, around 50 people gathered outside theShenstone factory near Lichfield.

The Drone Campaign Network plans a Week of Action in October -see................. www.dronecampaignnetwork.org.uk.

Proceeds to go to one of the mission training centresin India.

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 13 - 19 MAY 2012

On behalf of Christian Aid, many thanks to the 20 people who helpeddeliver and collect envelopes from 16 roads in the area.

The sum raised was:-House-to-house collection £901.43HFC tin £110.26Singles’ lunch £30.00Sunday morning coffee £50.00

£1091.69

Additional funds will be collected from HMRC direct by Christian Aidfrom the 26 people (44 last year) who completed the Gift Aiddeclaration on the envelopes.

Of the 21 churches in the Bromley District who took part in the house-to-house collection only 10 churches assisted in the flag day collectionin central Bromley, and whilst there were 30 collectors, there was onlyone from HFC who collected £24.71. The total raised was £559.22.(£871.54 last year).

London Marathon 2012Jenny Carr's son, Phillip, completed the London Marathon in April,running for Tommy's, the baby charity, and completing the race in5:47:57.

Jenny and Phillip would like to offer a huge thank you to everyonewho sponsored him in support of Tommy's. The total amount raised,including gift aid, was £4,300, which will be used by Tommy's tofurther medical research and run information campaigns. Such a sumwill make a huge difference to help Tommy's in their goal of reducingthe incidence of miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth.

The Marathon was an amazing experience and the support from thecrowds was incredible.

Thank you again for your support.

Buses - You can wait for ages & then three come along all at once!

When standing at a bus stop wondering when the next bus willarrive (not all bus stops have the information) you can find out!

Each bus stop has a unique bus stop code on a plate which has beenplaced above the timetable.

You text that code from your mobile to 87287 and TfL will send you amessage with the arrival times of the next buses at your stop.

Then you can decide if it's worth standing and waiting!

What I have done is to store the code for each of my two closest busstops in my mobile telephone. So, before I leave home, I text theappropriate code to the number 87287 (stored under the name ofbuses). This means we can time when we leave the house for the bus

explore creative ways to pray for all that will happen before, duringand after the Games.

and 4th Sunday of each month. So, in July the stall will be held on the8th and 22nd, and in August on the 12th and 26th.

Traidcraft has reported that, in these times of economic problems,sales are down from the previous year. However, vital projects andthe support of producers in deprived communities are continuing.

The message is please buy Fairtrade, the work is more vital than before .Please continue to support your fair trade stall. Thank you.

Tax Justice Tour BusThis autumn, Church Action on Poverty (http://www.church-poverty.org.uk/)is joining forces with Christian Aid to take the campaign for Fair Taxeson the road, with a seven-week Tax Justice Bus Tour.

Our bright red London bus will be touring the length and breadth ofBritain and Ireland, to promote the simple message: It's time for FairTaxes for the poorest communities at home and globally.

In an age of austerity and spending cuts, tax avoidance is morallyunacceptable: tax dodging costs lives. It effectively amounts torobbing the poor - in the UK and in poor countries - of the money thatshould be spent on education, health and welfare.

The Bus Tour is a great opportunity to build support for Fair Taxes via thelocal and regional media, with local and national politicians, churchleaders, campaigners and supporters in the churches and othersympathetic audiences (e.g. trade unions).

The Church's 75th Anniversary CelebrationsMake a note in your diaries and invite your Family, Friends andNeighbours to one of the events being organised which is onSaturday 7th July 2012 and will take the form of two film shows.

1) In the year 1937 the Children's film Snow White was made and weplan to show the modern colour version in the Church on thelarge screens at 2 o'clock for families followed by a tea.

2) In the evening at 7.30pm we will be showing for adults ThePrisoner of Zenda, which was also made in 1937.

These events are not planned to make a profit but to reserve a seat acharge of £1 per person will be made.
