Why is local food important to
eat? Local food is important to
eat because it is healthier than
food that has been grown across
the nation. Why? First of all, in
order for the food to arrive here
fresh, it must be picked before it
is fully ripe. The earlier a plant is
picked before it is ripe, the less
nutrients it contains. Another
reason is the longer a plant has
to be trucked across the nation,
the more nutrients it loses and
more pollution results. Local
food is also environmentally
friendly. It helps reduce trucking.
Locally grown food is likely
grown by a smaller farm or
sustainably grown farm. These
things are good to support!

How to plant/care
for seedlings and
seeds
1. Get fresh soil.
2. Spread the soil on the
ground.
3. Dig a small hole.
4. Plant the seed or
seedling in the hole.
5. Cover with soil.
6. Water the plant every
day.
7. When grown, harvest
produce and donate at
one of the locations
listed this brochure.
8. The seedlings and
seeds can also be
planted in pots if you
don’t have room for a
garden.
What happens to
the food
donations?
Your fresh food donations are
given to those who do not have
access to fresh foods. There are
several drop-off locations for
your ‘Plant a Row, Give a Row’
produce:
Western Wake Farmers’
Market
(www.westernwakefarme
rsmarket.org)
Inter-Faith Food Shuttle
(www.foodshuttle.org)
Dorcas Ministries
(http://dorcas-cary.org/)
Can you donate
money instead?
Yes, you can donate money to
the above organizations and
they will purchase food for
distribution. If you donate at
the Western Wake Farmers’
Market, they will purchase
locally grown produce from
the market vendors to donate.

‘Plant a Row, Give a Row’ is
your opportunity to donate
freshly grown food to those
who don’t have access to
fresh food. By continuing to
take care of the seedlings and
seeds you have been given
today, and donating that food
to those who are less
fortunate in having access to
locally grown, fresh food, you
will be helping our community
in making a great change.
Who can participate? Anyone
who wants to help can plant
the seeds and seedlings, even
kids. It is a fun project for the
whole family!
Pass it along!!
Collecting the seeds from your
‘Plant a Row, Give a Row’
produce and replanting them
can save money and is recycling
the seeds. When you collect the
seeds, you can replant them in
pots or your garden and start
growing the plants again. You
can also pass the seeds and this
brochure along to friends and
family. By sharing this
information, we can help to
bring healthy, fresh food to
those in need!
Who are we?
