More than 450 guests showed up for the grand opening of the Jimmy

Dean Museum on Sept. 28, according to Rodney Watson, Director of Museums at Wayland Baptist University.

“We broke ground last year and were given the go-ahead to start exhibit work on May 1,” Rodney said. “Since the grand opening, I’ve been blown away by the number of people coming and going.”

Rodney said the museum has been running at 30 to 60 visitors a day. Fifty to 60 percent of these are from out of town.

“Most of them are from Lubbock, but they come from all over the state, and some are even from out of state,” he said.

A favorite exhibit is the 24-minute video shown at the beginning of the tour.

“Some in the younger crowd don’t realize that Jimmy Dean started his career as a musician,” Rodney said. “They see clips from his TV shows and movies. The older crowd followed his career from the music all the way through.”

In addition to exhibits, the museum has a store called Ruth’s Place.“There are no fees, so when people shop in the store, it helps us,” Watson

explained. “We also take donations.”Born in Olton, Jimmy Dean eventually moved to Plainview. Though today

his sausage brand is more widely known, his song “Big, Bad John” topped the charts back in 1961. He died in 2010 at the age of 81.

The museum is funded with a $5 million gift from the Jimmy Dean Foundation and Jimmy’s widow, Donna Dean Stevens.

James Odom, the “J” in TJ&D, was one of the founders of T&J Automotive 60 years ago. Dan Schafer, James’s son-in-law, started working for the business in 1988. When he became the owner, he added the “D.”

Elected in 2002, Robert W. Kinkaid Jr. has served nearly 14 years as 64th District Judge over Hale, Castro and Swisher counties.

“I’ve seen a few things happen around here,” said the judge who served as Assistant District Attorney for 16 years for Hale and Swisher counties before being elected judge in 2002. “Nothing much surprises me anymore.”

As lawyer, ADA and judge, he has seen a lot of people accused of committing crimes.

Every now and then, however, something positive happens, such as a wrong being righted. Or, better still, an adoption.

“It’s a pretty satisfying part of my job to see that happen,” Judge Kinkaid said.

Judge Kinkaid grew up in Plainview and graduated from PHS. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and in 1985 obtained a doctor of jurisprudence degree from Texas Tech University School of Law. He was licensed to practice law later that year.

Judge Kinkaid understands that jurors’ time is valuable and is dedicated to making efficient use of that time when citizens appear for jury duty.

The judge said the most satisfying part of his job is the people he gets to work with.

“A lot of good people work here in the courthouse and I enjoy working with them,“ he said.

After serving in the courthouse for almost 30 years, Judge Kinkaid looks forward to retirement.

A lot has changed since electrician Eddie Sessions started City Electric back in 1955. Computer technology has changed communications, billing processes and system testing, and we can access knowledge at lightning speed.

But people still need warm, well-lit homes, working ovens and TV sets that bring them news, sports and weather.

After Sue Looney graduated from high school, her father offered her a summer job working at City Electric. Sue enjoyed working there so much that she stayed on. In 1989, she and her business partner Ricky Mason bought the company.

“We’re busy,” Sue said. “We’re thinking about hiring more help.”

City Electric does new installations and all types of residential and commercial service work.

As the oldest contractor in Plainview, they have many regular customers that they’ve taken care of for years.

City Electric also has clients over a widespread area.

Sue thanks the city of Plainview for choosing them for the Readers’ Choice Award.

“We appreciate being honored like this,” she said. “It means a lot to be part of this community. I know my dad would be very proud.”

Centennial Bank was formed out of the merger of HCSB and Citizens Bank in 2013. These two banks shared common ownership and merged to make one very strong bank. The original charter of Hale County State Bank started in Plainview in 1934 and has been under the same ownership since 1976.
