1st Qtr 2018 Volume XII Number I Chances are that if you know only one pony on A Carousel for Missoula, that pony will be Paint. Paint was designed and originally painted by western artist Larry Pirnie. While Missoula likes to call Larry our own, he is known throughout the world for his brightly3colored, dimensional artwork of the old, and not2so2old, west. Larry has been a very generous and enthusiastic friend of the Carousel since nearly the beginning of the project. He and his wife, Irene, adopted Paint early on and have been involved and supportive every step of the way. Now, Larry and Irene have come up with an amazing plan to support the Carousel financially in a major way, while offering the public a chance to acquire a framed Pirnie original at a very affordable price. Larry is passionate about color. He uses colors in unique and wonderful ways to express emotion and tell stories with his paintings. Larry has taken a single image of a horse and has painted both the horse and the background in various ways to make completely different paintings. One needs to look closely even to know all the pictures are from the same image. On Sunday, May 6, from 4 to 7pm, fifteen of these original Pirnie paintings will be on sale at the Carousel. Each framed painting will be sold for just $1200. All proceeds will go directly to support the Carousel. For approximately one week before the event, these paintings will be on display at the Carousel. This%year,% the% frame%and%motor%that%support%and%power%our%Carousel%are%100%years%old.% It%may%be%more%precise%to%say%most%of% the% frame%and%motor%are%100%years%old.%Much%of% the%time%the%mechanics%spent%restoring%the%1918%Herschell%Spillman%frame%and%motor%was%given%to% finding%old$parts$ from$other$ frames$and$machining$ones$they$could$not$ find.$Some$metal$gears$have$been$replaced$with$heavy9duty$plastic$ to$help$the$machine(run(more(smoothly.(Overall,(however,( the(Carousel’s( frame(and(motor(have(been(in(use( for(a(century.
Sometimes( it(seems(only(a( few(years(have(passed(since(the(Carousel(opened,(but(on(May(25,(we(will(celebrate(our(23rd(birthday.(Twenty?three%years%ago,%we%made%history%by%completing%the%first% fully%hand7carved%Carousel% to%be%constructed%by%volunteers%since%the%Great%Depression,*and*today*we*continue*to*create*history*each*day,*even* if* the*history* is* for* just*one*person*who*will*remember*the*experience*forever.
Because'of'your'support'through'the'years,'we'have'been'able'to'keep'the'doors'open'year8round,'with'the'exception'of'a'brief'maintenance'period'each'January;'we'added'Dragon'Hollow'in'2001;'we'expanded'the'building' in'2016;'and'we'have'provided'the'community'with'many'low$%and%no$cost%events.%Best%of%all,%we’ve%kept%alive%the%magic%that%created%the%Carousel%so%many%years%ago.

greatest' fund,'and'friend,raising'events'Missoula'has'ever'seen?'! ! !Dragon!Hollow!had!its!beginning! in!2000,!when!Bob!Leathers,! from!Leather's!&!Associates,!a!playground!architectural! firm!from%Ithaca,%NY,%came%to%Missoula%to%consult%with% local%playground%experts%about%what%to%put% into%a%community%playground.%Bob$and$some$local$volunteers$spent$a$morning$going$from$school$to$school$to$ask$children$what$kind$of$playground$they$wanted.(That(afternoon,(Bob(drew(preliminary(plans,(while(children(from(other(schools(offered(advice(and(suggestions.(By(evening,'a'draft'of' the'plans' for'Dragon'Hollow'was'complete'and'adults'were' invited' in'to'hear'more'about'the'process.' Just'nine$months$ later,$ in$the$spring$of$2001,$over$4,000$volunteers$worked$together$to$create$a$6,000$square$foot$playground$in$just%nine%days.! ! !After!Dragon!Hollow!was!completed,! the!Carousel!Foundation!gave! it! to!the!City.! It! is,!after!all,! in!a!City!park,!and!the!City!can$ insure$the$structure$and$the$children$who$play$on$ it$much$more$economically$than$the$Carousel.$ In$the$agreement,$however,( the(Carousel(retained(responsibility( for(maintaining(the(play(area.(The(Carousel(uses( its(resources(to(maintain(Dragon(Hollow,&but&receives&no&money&from&the&play&area.! ! !Nearly!20!years! later,! in!spite!of!extensive!annual!maintenance,! it! is! time!to!refurbish)and)refresh)Dragon)Hollow.)Board)members)Max)Murphy)and)Kimberly)Roth%are%assembling%a%team%to%raise% funds%and%find%volunteers%to%do%this%work% in%the$spring$of$2019.$Team$members$to$date$ include$John$Maki$and$Jim$McGowan.$You$will$be$hearing$more$about$these$efforts$ in$the$next$year,$and$we$will$be$asking'for'your'help'~'creatively,' financially'and'physically.'
