    Assembly Procedure

    1. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (11) . Install bearing cup (11) in the pinion housing, asshown.

    Note: Reset the bearing cup with a suitable driver after the mating parts have reached a uniformtemperature.

    2. Install O-ring (12) on the pinion housing.

    3. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (10) . Install bearing cup (10) in the pinion housing, asshown.

    4. Raise the temperature of bearing cone (9) to a maximum temperature of 135C (275F). Installbearing cone (9) on pinion shaft (4) .

    Note: Reset the bearing cone with a suitable driver after the mating parts have reached a uniformtemperature.

    5. Attach Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to the pinion housing. Lower the pinion housingover the pinion shaft.

    6. Use SAE 30W gear oil to lubricate the bearing.

    7. Raise the temperature of bearing cone (8) to a maximum temperature of 135C (275F). Installbearing cone (8) on pinion shaft (4) .

    Note: Do not reset the bearing cone at this time.

    8. Use SAE 30W gear oil to lubricate the bearing.

    10. Install nut (6) on the pinion shaft. Use Tooling (A) to tighten nut (6) in order to load the bearings.

    11. Attach Tooling (C) to the yoke. Install the yoke and Tooling (C) on the pinion shaft.

    12. Use a torque wrench and Tooling (C) to slowly turn the pinion shaft. Check the rolling torque.

    For new bearings, the rolling torque is 0.9 to 1.8 Nm (8 to 16 lb in). If the existing bearings are

    used, limit the rolling torque to half of the specification.

    Note: If the rolling torque exceeds the specification, back off the shaft by a 1/8 turn. Reseat thebearings and repeat Steps 11 and 12.

    Completed Stake

    (E) The spherical radius of the tool for peening must be 7.5 to 8.0 mm (0.295 to 0.315 inch).

    (F) The acceptable angle of the tool for peening is 20 10 degrees.

    Note: Before you stake the nut, make sure that the pinion shaft has zero end play.

    13. When the rolling torque is correct, stake nut (6) by peening the collar in slot (5) in the pinionshaft. See Illustration 11 and the caption for the correct dimensions.

    14. Use Tooling (D) to install lip seal (3) in retainer (2) . Make sure that the sealing lip is facinginward.

    (G) The minimum length of the crimp is 4.7 mm (0.185 inch).

    (H) The minimum depth of the crimp is 2.5 mm (0.098 inch).

    15. Put retainer (2) in position on the pinion housing. Install the washers and six bolts (1) .

    16. Use SAE 30W gear oil to lubricate lip seal (3) .

    End By: Install the differential and the bevel gear. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Differentialand Bevel Gear - Install".
