It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of

this Great Algonquin Warrior in his home, surrounded by

his loving family, at the age of 73.

Garry was the rock of our family and the beloved hus-

band of Carole and the greatest Dad to Margaret Ann,

Sherry Lee (Morris), John Paul (Lisa) and Jake. His chil-

dren were his pride and joy.

Garry treasured all of his Grandchildren/Great: Joshua,

Mitchel, Hayley, Ethan, Silas, Kruz; and Memphis, Mead-

ow and Scarlett. They gave him his strength and will to

live

Garry, also known as Pinky, is predeceased by his Mother

Mary Cooco and Father John Kohoko and sister Eliza-

beth Brinda. He is survived by his Brothers Archie

(Donna) and Lawrence (Connie) and many nieces and

Nephews.

Garry Joseph Kohoko

February 1, 1947 - August 8, 2020

Although Garry was a paraplegic (44 years), he never allowed his paralysis to discourage him from living his life to

the fullest. He was a kind, and loving person who will always be remembered for his tremendous strength, wild

spirit, and his crazy sense of humour. He served as a member of Chief and Council for several terms. He and his

wife Carole were active foster parents for 10 years. Garry was a dedicated fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and

Captain of the Guzzlers Ball Team. Some would argue these two teams were at the same caliber of fine athleti-

cisms.

Garry was a kidney transplant recipient from his son John Paul which granted him 4 more years of love and

memories in which Garry and Carole recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Until we meet again, may the Great Spirit make sunrise in your heart and

may your moccasins make tracks in many snows yet to come.

Pikwakanagan Tibadjumowin – August 14, 2020

Dear Members of Pikwakanagan,

These letters have become a regular opportunity for me to provide updates and to reflect on how some of the current issues and events are unfolding. It is important that you are aware of both the events and decisions as well as the reasons and thinking behind them. I also need your in-formed and continuous insight to lead with the wisdom of many. As always, if there is a topic you would like me to discuss, please let me know.

For this week’s letter, I thought I might reflect on the impact that can be made when we celebrate each other’s successes. Too often, resentments or jealousies prevent whole-hearted celebration of success and, instead, feed off challenges and failures. While I have come to believe that this is an unfortunate part of human nature, as I have seen it in every career I have ever pursued, I have also seen how things can shift when we consciously operate with a sense appreciation and reverence for the skills and knowledge of those around us.

It is important to both uplift each other and hold each other accountable, both with kindness and respect, and this can be a difficult thing to balance. Responsibilities, and the power that accom-panies them, are best approached with grace and a constant sense of who you are accountable to. Power and position can change in an instant if this becomes unbalanced; nothing and no one is too big or too powerful to fail and to fall.

In some of my personal reflections, and previously in my letters, I have considered how the bal-ance of abundance and scarcity contribute to our conduct and well-being. I think about how the constant sense of scarcity, of not having enough to sustain everyone, effects the ability to cele-brate the successes of others. If the abundance in other’s lives is seen as a scarcity for someone else, then I understand it is not easy to celebrate that. Though, it is far too easy to shift the blame for our own shortcomings and challenges to others when we are not ready to be accountable to ourselves and work on the things that must change in our own lives.

It is my hope that we can continue to flourish in the ways that we already do as a community and create even more abundance so that no member feels the pressures of scarcity. I know we have a lot of work to do and we face significant challenges on the path to achieving these goals; we will need every member and their network of friends and family to work together and resist the temptations to feed resentments, jealousies or fears.

Perhaps as a way to put this reflection into action, I would like you to join me in welcoming those who were successful in their application to positions in both the administration and the self-government teams. We have now filled the positions of Manager of Public Works, Communica-tions Officer, as well as the Administrative Assistant positions for Self-Government.

In addition, I would like to let you know that I will be taking a short time off to visit with my friends and family between August 22 And September 5. During this time, Councillor Dan Kohoko will be assuming my responsibilities. I will have drafted letters for these two weeks in advance, so you will continue to see them published in the newsletter while I am away.
