    Pieces of You As bright as diamonds, as pure as crystals, as transparent as air but as brittle as glass. As I walk

    the streets, I find pieces fallen to the ground, left behind and trampled. It is alone, a fragment.

    I never want to find yours. It needs to be whole and beautiful. Only then can I love you

    unconditionally knowing that you will always be safe and loved. Every piece that is yours is worth

    loving. Dont ever forget that.

    ~~~~~
    Im trying to understand love, she told herself as she took her time walking in the mall, a
    notepad in hand. How can I learn about love?
    She had no idea. She was a writer and her dream was to find an even ground with her readers
    written in a language that they would understand and feel. She wanted her literature to be real,
    not fiction nor fantasy. She was not going to make it fancy for it would only be a lie to her
    readers. Tiffany Hwang wanted to understand love for what it was.
    Tiffany unfurled her scarf as she decided to spend another hour in the mall. The soft blue scarf
    hung around her neck as Tiffany watched surrounding passersby. She had no specific target but
    her eyes naturally latched onto those hand in hand.
    Tiffany sat down on a nearby bench, now watching an incoming pair, wondering what they were
    thinking right now. The male of the pair had his fingers hung loosely while the female gripped
    his hand tightly with her own. His head faced the opposite side, eyes taking in the random
    surroundings. The couple then stopped in their tracks.
    Oppa, what do you want to go eat tonight? she asked and he turned back.
    Umm, it doesnt really matter to me. How about you choose? he replied, smiling to let her
    know that hed go with whatever she wanted. The girl revealed her own little smile as if
    expecting this answer.
    Lets go to the restaurant near my house, she suggested.
    Yea okay, he agreed, grinning before adding quickly Do you want to go now?
    Yes, Im getting hungry, the girl nodded enthusiastically. Lets go.
    The girl tightened her grip on his hand as they continued on.
    Tiffany was not sure but their conversation seemed like any typical couple. Seemed was the
    key word. The thing was, Tiffany couldnt really tell. What was typical? What wasnt? The word
  • Xylence
    typical made it sound as if it wasnt wanted but maybe typical was what people long for most.
    Why be complicated?
    Tiffany wanted to smash her head against something and perhaps that lovely headache to
    follow would give her some ideas. Tiffany looked at the girl again before she could disappear out
    of her view. Tiffany hoped she had mistaken but the smile on her face had faded.
    ~~~~~

    She felt it and she could see it. Fragile. Ready to break. She wished it wouldnt.

    Her long blonde hair was pushed to one side as she leaned on the rail, watching a pair that was

    nearby. The male of the pair had his fingers hung loosely while the female gripped his hand

    tightly with her own. His head faced the opposite side, eyes taking in the random surroundings

    but found no interest in them. The couple then stopped in their tracks.

    Oppa, what do you want to go eat tonight? she asked and he turned back, half dazed.

    Umm, it doesnt really matter to me. How about you choose? he replied, forcing a smile. The

    girl revealed her own little smile as if expecting this answer.

    Lets go to the restaurant near my house, she suggested.

    Yea okay, he agreed, unable to hide his liking for this answer before adding quickly. Do you

    want to go now?

    Yes, Im getting hungry, the girl nodded enthusiastically, hiding. Lets go.

    When he turned away, that small smile slowly faded, the girls gaze drifting to the ground. She

    understood. His boredom in being with her, his eagerness to take her back home was evident

    and it was only to be aided by the girl who loved him enough to realize what he felt about her.

    She was sure that he didnt want to hurt her but at the same time she didnt want him to

    pretend. Her grip tightened a bit more, wanting to feel the warmth of his hand before fully

    letting it go.

    After they left, Jessica walked to where they had just been. It was there, its glow was vibrant

    and sparkling. Bending down, she studied the piece that had broken apart from the rest and lay

    on the ground alone. It wanted to return to where it belonged. It didnt want to be left behind.

    Jessica carefully picked up the piece as if it would shatter onto her palm. It resembled a broken

    piece of a wine glass, rounded and smooth but it was only a very small part of it. The delicate

    shining surface meant nothing except telling her that it had once been a part of something

    magnificent. Jessica slowly let her fingers close on it. Jessicas eyes turned to the direction

    where the girl had gone. A trail was left behind. What Jessica had picked up was only one piece

    of her broken heart.

    ~~~~~
    Tiffany watched curiously as a person randomly entered her view and bent down as if looking
    for something. Tiffany was more than confused when she extended her hand and had her
    fingers close on air. Despite the lack of object pinched between her thumb and index finger, the
    blonde placed it, and Tiffany really wondered what that it was, onto her other palm. A look of
    sadness crossed her face as she lifted her head to look forward. Her hand closed and she stood
    up again.
    Tiffany stared, her mouth subconsciously drifting open. Though she was sure that she didnt see
    the pair drop anything behind, she was starting to wonder what the blonde had taken from
    them. Clearly she wouldnt do all those actions with thin air unless she was insane but Tiffany
    guessed differently. The girl must have dropped something without Tiffany noticing and the
    blonde was taking it as her own.
    Hey you! Tiffany called out. The blonde turned to her, looking thoroughly confused.
    Did you take something from that girl that just walked past? Tiffany asked, a frown forming.
    Jessica blinked at her.
    What are you referring to? Jessica asked to confirm, slightly wary. Tiffanys firm gaze lost its
    strength, not knowing the answer at all.
    I dont know but you were doing something. If it doesnt belong to you then give it back,
    Tiffany demanded, her hand opened. Im going to give it back to her.
    The corner of her lips curved into a small smile, realizing that she had seen nothing. It amused
    Jessica slightly that this passerby had noticed and had not just looked away like any other
    person would. Instead, the brunette wanted to return it.
    If I could return it to her, I would, Jessica replied simply but Tiffanys eyes narrowed as if
    Jessica had just confirmed her suspicions. I didnt take anything.
    Jessica raised her hands in surrender and Tiffany stared at perfectly clean palms. Jessica let her
    hands fall down as Tiffanys expression changed.
    I well Tiffany was stumped. Im sorry for accusing you then. I thought you took something
    that didnt belong to you.
    Her gaze dropped, slightly embarrassed, hand on her head. Jessicas smile widened, her odd
    admiration growing. She liked how she had apologized something that people would do
    anything to avoid. They would either blow up or make up random excuses to prove that they
    were fully justified despite it being an honest mistake.
    No, its fine. Dont be sorry, Jessica told her and Tiffanys brown eyes lifted to meet her own.
    Something inside her stirred.
  • Xylence
    Momentarily distracted too, Tiffany forced her own gaze away.
    I umam going to go now, Tiffany mumbled as she stepped back. Just as she did, a running
    child had zoomed past, pushing her away to chase another troublesome kid.
    Tiffany toppled forward, her arms swinging chaotically and Jessicas eyes widened.
    No wait!
    I cant let her touch me.
    But her arms had already thrown forward, catching her.
    But I cant let her fall either.
    Tiffanys body slammed against Jessicas as her arm circled around it to stop her from falling but
    too late. They fell together with Jessicas back hitting ground first.
    Tiffanys previously closed eyes shot open and was met with eyes clearer than anything she had
    ever seen. Tiffany wanted to gasp in shock but her whole body failed to understand the fuzzy
    messages her brain was sending. All she understood was that their faces were less than a few
    inches apart.
    Her breathing stopped, her heart pounding to make up for it. Jessicas hand was still around her
    waist while the otherwas pinned down by herself? Their hands were locked together and
    Tiffany didnt how that came to be. Her mind went blank. Only when Tiffany felt Jessicas fingers
    move did she realize that she was still on top of Jessica.
    Flushing red, Tiffany rolled off, finally letting out the breath she didnt know she had been
    holding. She blushed at the thought of her surprisingly tight grasp on her. The other part felt
    strange, dizzy, this lingering uncertainty that took over her entire body. Tiffany barely registered
    that the two kids were apologizing to her and she just absentmindedly nodded.
    Jessica slowly pushed herself up too and looked down at her hand, realizing what had happened.
    Are you okay? Jessica asked hastily beside her. No, she didnt feel right. She couldnt describe
    it but it wasnt a pleasant feeling. Something hurt her eyes and she blinked to try to get rid of it.
    Her eyes stung as if light was directed straight at her.
    Im fine, she lied, pushing herself up and walking away while rubbing her eyes.
    Wait, Jessica called after her but Tiffany didnt stop. She couldnt stay here any longer. Her
    eyes hurt like mad as if the air was attacking them. She staggered, trying to push her way
    through the crowd. She needed out.
    Listen to me-
  • Xylence
    Jessica didnt know her name.
    Tiffany pushed the door out and was blinded by light. She couldnt see anything and her arm
    quickly moved to shield her eyes. She remembered the day being one of early winter but why
    did it seem like the dry pavement was glistening in blinding light as if it was white snow instead?
    Her head hurt and everything around her spun. Tiffany stumbled and fainted. Catching her once
    again, Jessica held her in her arms.
    ~~~~~

    The sky blurred when she opened her eyes. Where was she? Tiffany groaned at the effort of

    sitting up.

    Careful, a voice sounded from her left and Tiffany turned. The blonde was here with her and

    had a weak smile that showed her guilt.

    Im sorry I hurt you, Jessica said and Tiffany shook her head.

    Wasnt you, she muttered back.

    Or was it?

    Where am I? Tiffany mumbled, rubbing her temples.

    ErI dont have a house, Jessica admitted sheepishly, This just happens to be my favourite

    place.

    Tiffanys vision rectified and noticed where they are.

    OMFSDFSKF! she screamed as she scrambled to move back from the edge but Jessica grabbed

    her wrist.

    Youll fall too if you go the other way, she told her and Tiffany quickly moved back.

    Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, she chanted as she tried to find a center to the limited

    space available. She couldnt help it. She clung on to the arm of the person beside her

    desperately taking over her space as well.

    Calm down, Jessica chuckled, patting her head reassuringly.

    Not at this height. Never at this height, Tiffany muttered frantically, head buried against her

    arm. Jessica looked down. She didnt see the problem. At this height, it was the perfect view, the

    city laid out for her to admire. At night time, it was even better. Her legs dangled happily down

    on the edge of the ring that circled one of the tallest towers.

    Whats your name? Jessica asked her, realizing that she still didnt know.

  • Xylence

    T-ffan-y-ffa-y-ffa-ny, she stuttered, tugging on her sleeve, Tif-fany

    Fany Fany Tiffany, Jessica sang, liking the ring to it. Im Jessica by the way.

    A gust of wind blew by and Tiffany screamed.

    HOW DID WE GET UP HERE?!?

    I like the view, Jessica said, ignoring her question and her smile faded. At this view, I cant see

    anything.

    Whats that supposed to mean? Tiffany asked quietly, her voice distracting her momentarily

    from the height but the moment she looked, she freaked out again.

    Get me down, she whined, tears coming out.

    Your eyes would hurt, Jessica explained gently. Wait a few more minutes. Itll take a while for

    you to get used to. Im sorry, I really am.

    Why are you sorry? You didnt-

    I did, Jessica said quietly and her hands clenched. I didnt mean to drag you into this but-

    I couldnt let you fall. I dont know why. I just couldnt.

    You fell and well

    Jessica lifted her open hand up to her.

    You touched my hand, she finished lamely.

    Tiffany peeked and found that it looked exactly as it should. To test it herself, Tiffany let her

    fingers graze her hand again. Nothing. Not knowing what drew her in, Tiffany slid her fingers

    between hers. The bottom of their palms met and Jessica looked at her, surprised. Tiffany felt

    her heart skip a beat when their eyes met.

    Jessica took her hand back, putting it back on her lap and turned away. Tiffany looked down,

    cursing her beating heart.

    What were you doing before? Tiffany asked her softly. Jessica let out a wry chuckle.

    I was collecting fallen pieces of her broken heart, Jessica explained, no longer bothering to

    hide. She would be able to see them too now.

    Tiffany was shocked, so shocked that her hand slid down from Jessicas arm.

    W-What? Tiffany stuttered. How?

    Jessicas expression was grim. Her eyes lost its glow.

  • Xylence

    Lets go back.

    ~~~~~
    Tiffany didnt even know how she managed to get back down on firm ground. Her eyes were
    shut the whole way. Jessica released her waist as they surfaced in a secluded corner near where
    they were before.
    It wasnt necessarily teleporting but her body simply dissolved into wisps before reappearing
    wherever she wanted. That was simply something that only she could do, one of the many
    things she had learned to accept.
    Open your eyes slowly or itll hurt.
    Tiffany squinted before opening them fully. The ground was returning to its normal colour. No
    unnatural glint, just gray like it should.
    It doesnt hurt anymore, Tiffany gasped and Jessica felt reassured.
    Whatever you see, its going to be gone in a few days. Dont touch them. Forget that you have
    ever seen them.
    Tiffany looked at her directly, confused.
    Im going to go.
    Tiffanys eyes widened.
    No wait! Tiffany called, trying to reach for her. Jessica stopped in her tracks, her head turned
    slightly to show that she was listening.
    I- Tiffany started, wondering how she should word this without sounding totally stupid. Do
    you come around this area often?
    Nope. Fail. Still sounds stupid. Darn it.
    Unexpectedly, Jessica laughed as if Tiffany had said something funny. When she recovered,
    Jessica turned to face her.
    Until I fulfill my promise, Im never going to leave this place, Jessica answered with a grin and
    Tiffany felt elated.
    Goodbye Fany Fany Tiffany, Jessica said before turning the heel and exiting to the crowd.
    Tiffany followed her out but she couldnt see Jessica anymore. Curiosity would follow her home
    and more so, she believed the thought of Jessica would never go away.
    ~~~~~

    The warm water drenched her skin, soaking all her concerns away and falling straight into the

    drain. She knew her concerns would come back to haunt her soon enough and it already did.

    Jessica, she breathed out to herself and the name echoed in the showers. Even just saying her

    name shook something inside her. It was those eyes, as clear as the starry sky but then also

    clouded with a past that Tiffany couldnt decipher.

    She had said she collected broken hearts. Was Tiffany supposed to believe that? It was

    impossible but hadnt Tiffany seen her bending down as if picking up something just earlier?

    Tiffany shook her head. There was nothing in her hands.

    Tiffany gave herself a mental slap. Of course there was nothing. What the heck was supposed to

    be a broken heart?

    Tiffany stepped out of the showers, finding a towel. Broken heart. Metaphorically, it meant an

    emotion of great sadness, something that hurt beyond compare. Still to collect them? It

    wasnt solid. It was hardly an object. And of all things, why that? This abnormal hobby sounded

    rather depressing to her.

    Clothing herself, she got out of the bathroom and sat down in the living room of her condo.

    Taking her notepad out, Tiffany pondered on the concept of broken heart, on any sad emotion

    actually. It hurt, most often caused by the significant other or people closest to you. It erased

    ones self worth and it turned people away from their lives. But still, she was confused.

    Suddenly a loud sound erupted outside, breaking her thoughts. Screams and shouts were heard

    and Tiffany planned to ignore it but the sound of glass shattering made her jump. Tiffany rushed

    to her door opening it and a few doors away were a screaming pair.

    Get away from me! the one with long brown hair shouted, pushing the other out of her room

    into the hall.

    It was a mistake! the other cried, It was never meant to happen. You know Im in love you.

    Shes my friend and I had to go help her -

    Dont tell me what I saw didnt happen! You never forgot about her!

    She couldnt find a reply. She had not forgotten her. Nicole doubted she ever could but the love

    Nicole felt for Seungyeon was different now.

    I didnt mean for that to happen, she repeated but it wasnt enough. Something else was

    thrown at her and she ducked. Glass shattered again, littering the ground.

    Stop lying to me Nicole! Dont ever come back! the first screamed, throwing something else at

    her and slammed the door in her face. Tiffany watched as tears fell, surprising her. The one sent

    outside slumped, head leaned hopelessly on the door. Nicole bent down to pick up the ring she

    threw at her.

  • Xylence

    Im so sorry. Im so sorry.

    She dejectedly turned away and disappeared around the corner.

    Broken heart.

    The words entered her brain just like that. Tiffany was about to go back, thinking about Jessica

    again when something caught her eye. Tiffany backed up a few steps, re-entering the hall.

    Something glowed in the mist of broken glass. Tiffany carefully stepped forward, bending down

    to get a better view.

    Apart from its glow, it looked just like every other piece that lay there. What was it and how

    could there just be a few like that?

    Her slippers stepped carefully down and her fingers reached for them before freezing midway.

    Jessica said not to touch them.

    But she couldnt resist. Taking it, Tiffany found out that it even felt like glass only that its clarity,

    its brightness and its glowing essence surpassed everything she had ever seen before. Rainbow

    colours shimmered as she picked it up. It was so beautiful.

    Tiffany didnt realize it but she was doing exactly what Jessica did. Pinching the small piece of

    who knows what, she let it rest on her palm. It was entrancing and warm. Without warning,

    something flashed through her mind.

    Black and white, like olden day television except it played inside her mind. It was almost like a

    dream, seeing it from a persons eyes but it wasnt hers.

    It hurts so much, the person in front of her said, tears leaking.

    I know but itll pass. Ill be here for you, Tiffany heard herself say, or well, the person she was

    seeing this from.

    Dont leave me like he did, the pained girl cried, burying herself in Tiffanys embrace. Please

    dont.

    I promise I wont, Tiffany soothed, trying her best to calm her best friend.

    Make me forget, she sobbed in her arms, her tears staining Tiffanys clothes. Even for a

    second, please help me forget.

    Tiffany paused, hurting from how deeply her friend was betrayed. Even more so because she had

    been her first love.

    Tiffany angled her head slowly, their noses aligning until their lips met. Her gentle kisses were

    returned but the tears never stopped.

    Im sorry, Tiffany whispered before their lips connected again, offering the distraction that

    could never fool the tears that leaked out from her eyes and her heart.

    Without warning, the door crashed open from her side and they parted. Staring at them was a

    girl with long brown hair, her expression mixed with pain and hatred. Without a word, she

    slammed the door shut and Tiffany found herself chasing her.

    Tiffany shook her head, waking from thiswhatever it was. Her chest hurt slightly as if she had

    something strike her. She felt weird, not knowing what the heck she had been watching but she

    had recognized the girl who had ran away. She was the one that lived a few doors down, the

    one that kicked the other out.

    She carefully collected several more pieces and more of those short snippets entered her mind

    only this time Tiffany was starting to put these puzzle pieces together. Tiffany was this Nicole

    during those times. She had seen herself explain. She had seen herself plead. Were those

    Nicoles memories?

    Tiffany shifted closer to the last piece, right outside the door. As she picked it up, another

    memory zoomed into her mind but the point of view was different.

    Once Tiffany snapped out of it, she stared at the locked door in front of her. Tiffany heard

    muffled cries inside. She had been wrong. Not broken heart. Broken hearts. The last piece

    belonged to her. No matter how she had yelled at Nicole, deep down she still loved her. That

    was why it hurt.

    Was this what Jessica meant? Tiffany stared down at the small pile that was on her palm.

    Realization came. It wasnt about how this happened anymore. Now Tiffany desired to know

    why.

    ~~~~~
    Find her. Somehow find her.
    There was no number to how many hours she had spent searching for her. Simply a lot. It
    bothered her so much to see these things and even worse, there were so many. As beautiful as
    they were, Tiffany could not shake off the fact that they were a part of someone that had been
    hurt. Half of her told her not to pick them up again but at the same time, she wanted nothing
    more than to pick them up.
    She wanted answers. Tiffany shuddered as she circled the area once more, thinking of what she
    had seen. So many versions of hurt, pain and tears yet they all came back to one thing. It was
    the result of the heart breaking and now Tiffany knew that it was not metaphoric. Tiffany had
  • Xylence
    seen those hearts starting to become weak, shattering into what Tiffany saw on the ground yet
    she wanted to know more about them. She needed to know more about it.
    Pieces, Tiffany answered herself softly. Pieces of broken hearts.
    Tiffany stopped in her tracks, her eyes automatically locked on a glowing piece on the ground in
    front of her. Thoughts flooded in.
    How did this person get hurt? Cheated? Played or simply not meant to be?
    It wasnt controllable anymore, her curiosity. Tiffany bent down with her hand outstretched,
    ready to learn about another persons pain. Someone caught her wrist.
    Stop it, the voice commanded and Tiffany looked up. Jessica was looking at her with an
    expression that she could not read. Jessica snatched the piece with her other hand before
    pulling Tiffany up to her feet. Tiffany blinked and she thought she saw a flash of anger cross
    Jessicas face.
    I told you not to touch them, Jessica said, harsher than she had planned it to be. Tiffany
    merely gaped, not sure what to do when caught in the act. Jessica exhaled, pushing her own
    emotions down.
    Promise me you wont touch them again, Jessica demanded from her and Tiffany found
    herself nodding. Her recent obsession faded when Jessica spoke to her.
    I promise.
    Jessica calmed down, releasing her grip. Tiffany found herself breathing again once Jessicas
    frown disappeared. Relief entered her, motivating her to ask.
    Why does it draw me in like that? Tiffany questioned softly and Jessica felt herself weaken
    simply by how confused she sounded. Jessica answered the only way she could.
    Because the human heart is beautiful.
    ~~~~~

    Jessica kept her close as they tried to get away from the bustling streets. Jessica could sense

    Tiffanys eyes flickering, unable to pull away from the alluring glow that littered the streets.

    Jessica took her hand, distracting her and drawing Tiffanys attention on her instead.

    Dont look and dont think about them. Just come with me.

    Tiffanys hand held hers tightly and Jessica felt reassured. They finally reached a rather secluded

    area and Jessica stopped.

    We have to get away from here, Jessica informed her. Close your eyes.

  • Xylence

    Tiffany abided and the next second, Jessica had told her to open them.

    Tiffany staggered again at the height and though it was not as high as last time, it was still

    terrifying. Unsteady steps nearly had her fall straight down but Jessica had caught her just in

    time. Her breathing was turning erratic from the near death experience.

    Dont worry, you arent going to fall. Im here.

    Her voice, how it managed to calm her pounding heart but also gave it another reason to beat

    frantically.

    Jessica guided her away from the edge and sat down on a even space on the structure, not once

    letting go of her hand. Tiffany struggled to find a way to regulate her breaths again but found it

    extremely hard.

    Tiffany, calm down, youre safe, Jessica soothed, positioning herself and her hand reached for

    Tiffanys cheek.

    In and then out, Jessica told her, demonstrating and urging Tiffany to follow. Tiffany was

    slowly starting to calm and Jessica felt relief rush through her. A relief that engulfed her whole

    body and was too strong to be deemed normal. Jessica pushed the thought aside.

    Are you alright now? Jessica asked her gently and Tiffany nodded slowly. Jessica smiled and

    sat down, happy that she was.

    Thats great, she smiled. Im sorry but only in places people rarely go to are free from heart

    pieces.

    Tiffany supposed she understood but it didnt make her feel all that much better. Instead, it

    reminded her of the overflowing questions she needed answered.

    What are they? she breathed out and Jessica knew she would have to explain. Only then

    would Tiffany leave them alone.

    Like I said before, they are pieces of peoples hearts. When someone is hurt deeply, their heart

    breaks and its pieces fall. Those pieces are left behind unknown to anybody.

    That Tiffany understood and Jessica continued on.

    When you pick them up, you see what caused the heart to break, Jessica explained quietly.

    They hold memories and the emotions that the person had felt gets to you as well. You will get

    hurt.

    And I dont want that.

    Tiffanys mind automatically related it to the time her chest hurt without reason. Nicole had

    been hurting.

  • Xylence

    I understand why you want to pick them up, Jessica said slowly. The human heart is truly

    beautiful. The pieces attract you, just like how a person would be attracted to another. They are

    at first curious and soon it becomes an attraction.

    Jessica revealed a sad smile as she went on.

    To me, the heart is as bright as diamonds, as pure as crystals, as transparent as air but as brittle

    as glass. They are fragile, they need to be cared for and needs to be understood as something

    precious.

    But even so, their pieces are everywhere, Tiffany whispered and Jessica nodded to her words.

    Some dont see that the heart is fragile, Jessica stated, pulling her legs into her chest. Their

    curiosity might just be all there is. They toy with the other persons emotions, having them

    willingly give their heart to them and when they had enough, they let it drop.

    And it shatters.

    There are many who do not intentionally let the heart break but that doesnt change the fact

    that it still is delicate. Its not just other people that can hurt oneself. If one doesnt see how

    important and precious they are themselves, the heart will only grow weaker making it more

    vulnerable, easier to break apart.

    Tiffany could see how Jessica felt about them. The sadness that surfaced from her actions and

    her eyes were evident.

    Thats why people need to learn to love oneself, not just depend on someone else to keep the

    heart alive, Jessica said softly, more to herself than to Tiffany. It needs to be whole and it

    doesnt want to part with its owner. If the person loves you, then you would not need to give

    them anything. They would love you regardless.

    Jessica looked down and then closed her eyes, shaking her head. Now wasnt the time.

    Why do you collect them then?

    Jessicas eyes opened to the timid question. Jessica turned to face Tiffany and their eyes met

    again.

    I promised someone that I would find every piece of her heart. Once fallen, its difficult to tell

    the person who it once belonged to, Jessica answered, exposing only half as she stood up.

    Jessica looked out to the endless sky, remembering her promise.

    One day, Ill return them to her.

    ~~~~~
    Her. Someone close? Someone important?
  • Xylence
    Tiffany tried to block out those thoughts. Every time she saw another glittering piece, Tiffany
    looked away. Tiffany made a promise to Jessica. She wasnt going to break it.
    The problem with seeing those pieces everywhere was that they all reminded her of Jessica. Like
    her mind wasnt on her already. Tiffany fumed, kicking thin air with a pout. She was supposed to
    be researching for her book, not fantasize but she couldnt help it. Thinking about her made her
    heart jump every time.
    And now Im even jealous.
    Tiffany turned red in embarrassment at the all too truthful thought.
    Shaking those thoughts out, Tiffany fixed her scarf and pulled her gaze away from the ground. In
    front of her were the main doors to the mall. Her feet had somehow drawn her back here, just
    like how her mind did.
    Tiffany shook her head, determined to believe that she was here only for her book.
    Yes, stay sane.
    Tiffany entered, eyes wandering on both the people and stores. Tiffany grinned at the Christmas
    decorations already out. They always put them up the moment winter starts even if Christmas
    was still very far away. She loved how the colours meshed, puffy cotton snow surrounding
    Santas chair with silver and gold bells to finish the set. Amazing.
    It wasnt only the decorations that made her smile. Many people were doing some early
    shopping too. There was a collection of children already having their eyes glued on the latest toy,
    parents trying to hide their sneaky smiles while dragging their children away, and men and
    women alike shopping in stores for their significant other. Christmas was a day for miracles but
    it was also a day to make those miracles come true.
    Tiffany suddenly found herself attracted to one store in particular. Bending down, her fingers
    pressed against the window. She was admiring a pair of beautifully carved crystal swans,
    together their necks shaping into a heart. They shone from the light and could only match the
    brightness of Tiffanys smile.
    Fany Fany Tiffany is getting fingerprint marks on the glass, a voice teased. Must be something
    nice.
    Tiffanys head swerved to her right only to find Jessica looking over her shoulder.
    H-hi, Tiffany stuttered and saw Jessicas face split into the same smile she had awhile ago.
    It really is quite pretty.
    Tiffany looked at the swans again and nodded in agreement.
  • Xylence
    They really are, Tiffany mused. I dont think anything can be more beautiful.
    Wouldnt bet on that, Jessica said quietly, pulling away from the window. An answer surfaced
    in her mind without much thought.
    I was just about to go when I saw you, Jessica started and Tiffany nodded in understanding.
    I was about to go too, Tiffany lied quickly. Luckily, Jessica accepted her answer and together
    they headed out the mall.
    Where are you go- Tiffany wanted to ask but saw that Jessica wasnt even looking at her.
    Instead, Jessicas eyes were fixed on someone in front of them.
    A man with his arm over his girlfriend. Laughing and flirting.
    Yonghwa!
    He swerved, looking around at who called his name and found Jessica walking up to him. His
    eyes lingered on her, down and up as if doing an examination. He smirked.
    Sorry, I dont think I know you because if I did, Im sure Ill never forget you, he grinned as if it
    was supposed to be a compliment.
    Seohyun, Jessica asked him. Do you remember her?
    Yonghwa raised a brow and drew a blank.
    Sorry, no idea whatsoever.
    You bastard.
    Jessica dashed forward and Yonghwa flinched, covering himself with his arms but nothing came.
    Jessica! Tiffany called to her, wringing her arm around Jessicas attacking one, stopping her
    just in time and dragged her back.
    She died because of you! Jessica screamed, battling Tiffanys grasp. You asshole! She died
    because of the way you treated her! And never once have you gone to see her after she died!
    How could you forget the girl who gave you everything?!
    I dont know who youre talking about! Yonghwa shouted back and it only infuriated Jessica
    more.
    You dont give a crap about all the people youve hurt! Her heart. You dont even know what
    you have done to it!
    Hot tears were starting to well in her eyes.
  • Xylence
    Youve destroyed it! Youve broke it into countless pieces! Her heart never recovered from it
    and her life ended because of you! How could you forget her?! How could you break two hearts
    all at once?!
    Jessica pulled out of Tiffanys grasp and charged forward. She had forgotten about her state. She
    made her way towards him only to have Yonghwa push her back roughly onto the ground.
    Jessica could feel her hands scrape the pavement but it was hardly noticed, eclipsed by this
    tormented feeling. Falling in front of the one who once lied to your loved one. Useless in front of
    the person who once made your loved ones life hell.
    I dont know what youre talking about! he shouted down at her. I didnt take anything she
    wasnt willing to give!
    That infuriated her beyond measures. Did he believe that it was not a privilege to receive love
    but his right instead? His delusional mind thinking he had done nothing wrong?
    It didnt matter how many more times she could be pushed down. Jessica got back to her feet,
    running up to him again and grabbed his shirt roughly.
    Jessica! You cant touch him! Tiffany cried out just as Jessicas fist was about to meet his face.
    If she touched him like Tiffany had, then he would experience exactly what Tiffany would and
    Tiffany knew Jessica didnt want that.
    Her fist shook, her body trembling. That slight hesitance had Yonghwa push her down again.
    Yonghwa merely scoffed at her weakness, her inability to hurt, something Jessica was reluctant
    to admit.
    Jessica slowly picked herself up, chest heaving from the effort it took her to do so. Her eyes
    were red but she refused to let her tears leak. Anger burned her every particle of her as she
    spoke.
    You she choked out. You dont deserve to see something so precious just like how you
    dont deserve her.
    Jessica elbowed him aside, pushing herself out of the circle of people that stood to watch.
    Jessica wait! Tiffany called again, rushing after her. Jessica had said he had broken two. One
    was Seohyuns. The other was hers.
    Jessica stopped when Tiffanys hand grabbed her shoulder and Jessica turned away, hastily
    wiping signs of weakness.
    Jessica, Tiffany said softly, realizing that the ground was dotted with circles from her tears.
    Please dont cry.
    Jessica straightened up, tilting her head upwards.
  • Xylence
    Im not, she answered despite her now red facial features. Tiffany suddenly felt sadness
    hearing her lie.
    Wait here, Tiffany told her and before Jessica could react, Tiffany had already let go of her arm.
    Tiffany stomped back, her target never leaving her sight. She snatched someones drink right out
    of his hands and poured it all over Yonghwas clothes.
    Jessicas mouth fell open at what she had done and was even more awestruck when, following
    the inhuman screech of fury, Tiffany threw the paper cup at his face without a seconds
    hesitation.
    Throwing one last glare at Yonghwa, who was too shocked to utter a word, Tiffany trudged back,
    her head held high and motioned Jessica to follow. The moment they made a turn, Tiffany
    grabbed Jessicas hand.
    Run before he sues me!
    Jessica didnt know what was happening but she followed Tiffany. Dodging left and right from
    the passersby, they ran, their hands never parting once. They escaped to the quieter side of the
    city and finally stopped at a nearby park, hands on their knees and panting.
    Hey, Jessica breathed and Tiffany held out a hand, asking for more time. Unable to stand on
    her weak legs, Tiffany plopped down on the grass.
    Oh my god, Tiffany sighed as Jessica took a seat next to her. I dont know where my mind
    went but I just realized that the cup I took was holding hot chocolate. If it gets past his clothes
    and his skin gets seriously burned, Ill be in jail for the rest of my life.
    Tiffany clasped her hands together and closed her eyes, facing the sky.
    He does not remember me, Tiffany chanted as if it would come true. He will not remember
    be.
    Who are you pleading to? Jessica laughed like she hadnt for a long time.
    God or Santa. Whoever hears me first, Tiffany replied and Jessica grinned at her answer.
    Youre amazing, Jessica said softly but Tiffany didnt hear her. This courage, even if it was
    reckless, was something Jessica admired. Her personality made her a reserved person, unable to
    forcefully drag Seohyun out of her dying relationship. She had tried convincing, only to give in
    every time Seohyun told her to stop. If she had tried harder, things wouldve ended differently.
    Once done her wish making, Tiffany dropped her hands onto her lap, smiling like a little kid.
    It felt so good though so dont tell me otherwise, Tiffany beamed at her when Jessica was
    about to scold her a little.
  • Xylence
    Thank you for everything then, Jessica said, turning to face her and her breathing slowed.
    Never would she forget that smile. Jessicas eyes flickered over her delicate features, ending at
    her lips.
    Noticing, Tiffanys heart pounded rapidly as she found herself pondering, needing to find an
    answer between yes and no. Slowly, she found herself drawing closer, secretly wanting to know
    how it felt to kiss her.
    Jessicas eyes fluttered shut as lips pressed lightly against her own. There was supposed to be
    hesitation in her, the fear that always stopped her but it wasnt present, not at this moment.
    Because with her, the answer had always been yes.
    Moments later, they slowly drifted apart, both looking for a reaction when something fell onto
    Jessicas cheek.
    Jessica! Tiffany exclaimed, pointing up her face. First snow!
    Jessica looked up and saw tiny white speckles starting to fall. Beautiful.
    Just like your heart.
    Jessica shook her head as she turned back to Tiffany with a smile.
    No. Just like you.
    ~~~~~

    Can you get me a vase? Jessica asked her, a few days after the fateful first snow. Its

    somewhere over there.

    Tiffany nodded, heading over leaving Jessica alone at Seohyuns grave. She placed the flowers

    down and kneed down. Her hand closed and when it reopened, Jessica slid its contents down in

    front of her.

    I found them Seohyun, Jessica said softly. All of them and I still find them as beautiful as

    before because they are all a part of you.

    Jessicas head tilted down with a sad smile. Her promise had been fulfilled though a little too

    late.

    Do you remember the first time I came here for you? Jessica started. I told you Ill be here to

    collect every piece of heart and wont leave until I do but now I really did collect every piece.

    Does that mean I have to leave now? she asked her, wanting an answer. If I stop collecting, I

    think I really will be gone.

  • Xylence

    For two years, she had done so, surviving on pieces to find Seohyuns. It wasnt even a decision

    back then. Jessica would do anything to fulfill her promise but without this, what was her reason

    to stay and to remain as one who suffered every broken hearts pain, not necessarily a ghost but

    definitely not human?

    Her.

    Smiling slightly, Jessica got back onto her feet, smoothing her clothes and turned to find Tiffany

    looking at her, vase in hand. Jessica couldnt read her expression but Tiffanys hands were

    trembling.

    What do you mean? Tiffany breathed out and Jessica froze. She had heard everything. Jessica

    felt a new form of emotion enter her. Fear.

    Do you remember that time when you asked me why I collect heart pieces? Jessica said slowly.

    I did it to fulfill my promise but I also did it to survive. It is how I keep human form.

    Tiffanys heart clenched.

    When I told you I was never going to leave the place, the intersection in front of the mall I

    wasnt lying, Jessica explained quietly. Every morning I come back there no matter where I

    was the second before.

    Dont tell me, Tiffany trembled, taking a step back.

    Dont tell me. Lie to me. Please, just dont tell me.

    Jessica saw her move back and Jessica felt herself drowning in fear but Tiffany deserved the

    truth. Her mind wondered if she would understand and accept it but unknown to even herself,

    her mind was actually pleading. She hated herself for it but she was starting to wish again.

    Tiffany I-

    No! Tiffany shouted but Jessica pressed on.

    I am always there because that is where I died.

    ~~~~~
    Tiffany stood frozen in front of her door alone. She didnt know for how long but it was already
    night. Tiffanys heart had stopped beating, her surroundings had stopped moving. Her eyes were
    wide in shock when Jessica had said those words.
    Jessica told me she was-
    Tiffany couldnt bring herself to say the word dead.
  • Xylence
    Why of all people did Jessica manage to shake her heart? Why couldnt someone else? How did
    she make her so curious that she had even made Tiffany pick up those pieces simply to know
    more about her?
    Tiffany let her forehead hit the door, trying to forget but it wasnt possible. She realized now
    that even though those heart pieces had attracted her with its glow, it had been Jessica that
    fuelled her curiosity to unreachable heights. Tiffany didnt really want to know what those
    people had gone through rather what Jessica had, collecting countless of them, having them
    replay in her head again and again.
    She couldnt think properly. She had just left, unable to take the truth yet Tiffany was still
    thinking about her. Only now did she realize that her mind had never once left Jessica since they
    had met.
    Hardly even a few days, Jessica had changed her completely and felt more than she ever had.
    What happened to her belief of love being 1+1 must equal to one? Even if there was pain, what
    happened to recovery? The equations were always mismatched, never bothering to make sense,
    leaving you trying and trying, desperately searching for one solid answer.
    Love wasnt simple. It was a total mess, out of your control and burning with emotions that
    could tear one apart but suddenly Tiffany didnt care whether it was a mess or not. To
    understand love was to accept it the way it was and the emotions that welled up in Tiffanys
    heart, whether good or bad, told her that there was indeed something that stirred inside. Jessica
    was responsible for these feelings.
    Jessica was so conflicted and Tiffany knew something had happened to make her feel the way
    she did. How she described what the heart was, it wasnt something you could throw out. She
    had experienced it and she had grasped this concept a long time ago. When Tiffany ran, Jessica
    didnt run after her. However much it pained her, Jessica had just accepted it as a fact. Love
    couldnt be forced. She had let Tiffany go.
    Would I Tiffany questioned herself quietly. see pieces of your heart left behind Jessica?
    ~~~~~

    Jessica walked alone on the empty streets of the night, wishing, something she told herself

    never to do. It was one of the things she wished against. After how Tiffany had reacted, she

    would probably never see her again and she herself had let her run. Her heart had shattered

    once. Jessica had doubted the fact it could shatter again.

    Im sorry, Jessica had said to Tiffany as she saw her distance herself, just like how Seohyun did.

    Seohyun had never felt that way for Jessica. In the end, Seohyun was hurt deeply by Yonghwa.

    Jessica had watched her punish herself believing that she wasnt good enough, wasnt pretty

    enough and unworthy in every way.

  • Xylence

    What are you talking about? Jessica shouted at her, couldnt contain herself any longer. Why

    are you like this? Its his lost! Youve done nothing wrong!

    Just go away.

    He doesnt deserve you! He doesnt even care how much youre hurting right now. Why are you

    letting him get to you when he doesnt even care anymore?

    Because I still love him.

    Jessica felt herself wanting to drown herself, wanting to flee and have her hands cover her ears,

    pretending those words never came out. Jessica had enough and she showed it.

    I wont ever like you look down on yourself like this! Jessica grabbed her wrist roughly. Cant

    you see that youre everything I care about? Everything I want by my side, the only thing I see!

    Im in love with you!

    She didnt hear or she didnt care. Nothing shook her out of her state. Those tears shot daggers

    into her chest. Jessica released her wrist. They just couldnt be more than they were.

    What can I do? Jessica breathed out, a tear rolling down her cheek. Ill do anything for you.

    She sobbed, her hand clutching where her heart was or had been.

    Its broken. Ive given him everything; Ive given him my heart. He took it and stepped on it. Its

    gone, its gone, she cried to herself.

    Jessica swallowed her anger down, her sadness down, her pain down. Her hands clutched into

    fists.

    Ill find it, every piece of it, Jessica promised her, her voice trembling. Im not going to leave it

    broken. It deserves to be whole. It deserves to be beautiful. Im not going to let it disappear.

    Never.

    Jessica bolted out of the door, wiping the tears that had consumed her face with her sleeve. Her

    nose was red and her vision blurred as she stepped out of her house into the dark night.

    Raindrops blended in with her tears as she stopped in her tracks.

    She felt so useless, so helpless in protecting her. She had made a promise to her that she would

    never be able to fulfill and no one would understand how much she hated herself for it. Why

    couldnt she help her? Why couldnt she give her everything she had and have her accept it? She

    only wanted to love her.

    Jessica ran, hating herself more and more. She was stupid for falling in love with someone who

    didnt love her. She was stupid for wishing that one day shed see her as something more. She

    was stupid for not even being to comfort her at her time of need. Instead, Jessica had given her

    false hope.

  • Xylence

    Jessica closed her eyes, her legs stiffened in remembrance. Plunging blindly out onto the streets,

    she was hit. Jessica couldnt regret it. She still didnt. She had begged to stay and be granted the

    ability to see the pieces that was worth more than her life. So she remained, using others

    hearts to remain here for her own heart could never recover. Jessica had wandered everywhere

    but no matter what though, Jessica had known she would still fail because she knew she would

    have to return the pieces to her at her grave.

    Jessica cried by herself in the secluded alleyway. Her arms wrapped around herself and she

    lowered herself to the ground. If only she hadnt wasted time. If only she had died earlier.

    But now, she wished she hadnt.

    She couldnt wish anymore. That forgotten desire had somehow resurfaced when she saw

    Tiffany though. She had wished that she could but Jessica couldnt, not in this unstable form, not

    in any. Jessica didnt dare love anymore. She shouldnt but she did.

    Her hand closed on where her heart used to be.

    Im sorry that I love you.

    ~~~~~
    Tiffany waited. She was here since last night and she was waiting for that one exact moment.
    The second it hit twelve, Jessica suddenly appeared in the center of the road. Some part of
    Tiffany wished that she wouldnt be able to see Jessica appear. She had hoped that Jessica had
    been lying to her.
    Jessicas expression was dead, emotionless as if just resurfacing from something terrible.
    Arms wrapped around her, startling Jessica and snapped her out of her thoughts. Jessica found
    her arms trapped against her sides by the other and Tiffanys head connected with her back.
    I dont even know how or when I started but the moment I saw you, I just did, Tiffany said
    behind her. Something drew me to you and I cant break free from it. I wanted so much from
    you. I wanted you to stop hurting yourself, I wanted you to be with me, and I wanted you to love
    me.
    Jessica and all interpretation of time froze at those words.
    I dont understand it but more than what I wanted from you, I wanted to be the one to stop
    your hurting, I wanted to be with you and Ive already fallen in love with you, Tiffany cried,
    tears building.
    Even in the early morning where no one was present, her words echoed louder than Jessica
    thought they could.
  • Xylence
    She loves you.
    But what can I do for her?
    Tiffany held onto her tighter when she felt Jessicas hand rest on hers, trying to pry apart her
    locked fingers. When Jessica did, Tiffany was forced to let go. Every part of her hurt and Tiffany
    knew that her heart would soon find its place with the other pieces left behind.
    Jessica turned to face her and Tiffanys tears immediately fell. Her presence so close but
    unreachable.
    Jessicas hand rose above Tiffanys shoulder to caress her cold cheek. Jessica took a step forward
    and closed whatever space they had between. Lips embraced each other, sending emotions
    haywire. Jessica held her closely, kissing her like she had never done to any other. She felt
    Tiffanys arms wrap around her body and warmth finally returned to her after so many years.
    Lips continued to mesh, gentle but sensual. Tiffanys eyes closed, trusting the emotions that
    surged inside her. Tiffany had never wanted anyone else more.
    They parted, breathing slightly heavier. Eyes flickered above the pink tinges that had found their
    way on their cheeks. Jessica leaned in to kiss her gently again, reassuring herself that this was
    real, not some fantasy. Tiffany confirmed it by returning them all.
    I think Im in love with you. I cant leave you, Tiffany whispered and Jessica felt herself happy
    again.
    I thought you wouldnt come back, Jessica said softly to her. I didnt dare think that you
    would.
    Fingers wrapped around Jessicas wrist and lifted her hand up. Jessica stared, confused when
    Tiffany slid her fingers between hers and held her hand.
    Youre real to me and Im not leaving, Tiffany told her. I would give you my everything just to
    have you by my-
    Dont, Jessica interrupted and Tiffany stiffened. Dont give me anything.
    I want everything that is yours to stay with you. Your heart is beautiful and it belongs to you. I
    love you Tiffany and there is nothing that I need to love you.
    Jessica kissed her lightly on the forehead.
    I just do.
    ~~~~~

  • Xylence

    Returning to this intersection was a daily routine and it was a reminder to Tiffany of their

    separation. Tiffany would feel her arm leave her at midnight and Tiffany would turn around on

    her bed to find Jessica gone. Was this how they would continue? Why was everything telling her

    that it wouldnt work?

    It was blissful though, having her hand locked in yours and holding it as if it was the most

    delicate thing in the world yet at the same time possessively because she didnt dare let you go.

    Tiffanys heart beat for her and it was stronger than ever. Tiffany didnt need to see it to know.

    It was glowing, more vibrant and happier simply because it was loved. Tiffany knew that

    Jessicas would feel the same.

    Every time she thought of that though, Tiffany was reminded that Jessicas heart was broken.

    She never had the chance for it to heal after her death. It was then when Tiffany had made a

    promise herself. She was going to find Jessicas pieces while her ability to see them still

    remained. She knew Jessica would have disapproved, knowing Tiffany would get hurt but Tiffany

    promised herself she wouldnt. Tiffany just wanted to understand her better.

    Without warning, Tiffany felt her thumb meet her other fingers, losing grip of the hand that she

    was holding. Tiffany looked down, seeing Jessicas hand present but unable to feel it.

    Whats happening? Tiffany demanded in fear at the sudden disappearance of Jessicas hand.

    Jessica avoided her gaze, taking her hand back and balled it into a trembling fist.

    I need to find pieces, Jessica answered quietly and Tiffany just realized that Jessica hadnt for a

    long time. Jessica had been with her every day, not bothering to even look for them because she

    had kept her focus entirely on her.

    Im so sorry, Tiffany blurted out, her head bowed down but Jessica looked appalled as she

    stepped in front of her.

    Please dont be. You know its not your fault, Jessica stated seriously. I wanted to be with you.

    I still do.

    Tiffany felt slightly better from her reassurance and as she slowly tilted her head back up, she

    found Jessica smiling at her.

    Ill come back soon once I collect enough alright? Jessica told her softly. Wait here for just a

    little while.

    Tiffany nodded as Jessica hurried away, wanting to get the job done as fast as possible. Tiffany

    waited by herself, her previous untroubled mood gone as she leaned against the wall.

    Jessicas out collecting pieces and painful memories again.

  • Xylence

    Something then sparked into her mind. Tiffany glanced around and though there wasnt nearly

    as much as there were where Jessica was heading, there were still a few. Tiffany felt herself split

    into a hopeful smile.

    She could help Jessica. The memory would be gone once picked up by her and then she could

    give those pieces to Jessica without her seeing them. Tiffany shuffled around, bending down to

    pick up whatever was available.

    Memories played but Tiffany ignored them, knowing that this was all worth it. Tiffany had

    collected most of them as she moved around the block. She needed more.

    As if answering her wish, a glint flashed and she just caught sight of it. Tiffany jogged over and

    realized there was a trail. Delighted, Tiffany hurried to pick up the first.

    What are you talking about? Tiffany shouted at her, couldnt contain herself any longer. Why

    are you like this? Its his lost! Youve done nothing wrong!

    Just go away.

    He doesnt deserve you! He doesnt even care how much youre hurting right now. Why are you

    letting him get to you when he doesnt even care anymore?

    Because I still love him.

    Tiffany snapped back to reality, her heart pounding as if she just ran a marathon. She recognized

    that voice, the one Tiffany had momentarily taken over.

    Jessica.

    Tiffany rushed to the next, picking each piece carefully and had the scene play.

    Tiffany felt herself wanting to drown herself, wanting to flee and have her hands cover her ears,

    pretending those words never came out. Tiffany had enough and she showed it.

    I wont ever like you look down on yourself like this! Tiffany grabbed her wrist roughly. Cant

    you see that youre everything I care about? Everything I want by my side, the only thing I see!

    Im in love with you!

    She didnt hear or she didnt care. Nothing shook her out of her state. Those tears shot daggers

    at her chest. Tiffany released her wrist. They just couldnt be more than they were.

    What can I do? Tiffany breathed out, a tear rolling down her cheek. Ill do anything for you.

    She sobbed, her hand clutching where her heart was or had been.

    Its broken. Ive given him everything; Ive given him my heart. He took it and stepped on it. Its

    gone, its gone, she cried to herself.

    Tiffany swallowed her anger down, her sadness down, her pain down. Her hands clutched into

    Ill find it, every piece of it, Tiffany promised her, her voice trembling. Im not going to leave it

    broken. It deserves to be whole. It deserves to be beautiful. Im not going to let it disappear.

    Never.

    Tiffany awoke again. This was what Jessica had to go through and every second of it had hurt

    Tiffany just as much but she wasnt willing to stop until she collected them all.

    As she reached for the next one, Tiffany suddenly felt a flash of pain just like how she did the

    first time at the mall. Her eyes burned and her head was dizzy. Tiffany struggled to keep focus as

    she reached for the piece in front of her.

    Its glow faded in and out, disappearing into nothing and then reappearing. Like Jessica had told

    her on the first day, her ability was only temporary and Tiffany cursed it.

    Not now! she shouted as she snagged the piece quickly. Even while the memories played,

    Tiffany forced herself to pull away from them, the need to be undistracted too great.

    Tiffany bolted out of the door, wiping the tears that had consumed her face with her sleeve. Her

    nose was red and her vision blurred as she stepped out of her house into the dark night.

    Raindrops blended in with her tears as she stopped in her tracks.

    Tiffany lunged blindly for the next piece, luckily able to trap it in her grasp. The memories were

    flickering in and out, distorting her vision.

    She felt so useless, so helpless in protecting her. She had made a promise to her that she would

    never be able to fulfill but no one could understand how much she hated herself for it. Why

    couldnt she help her? Why couldnt she give her everything she had and have her accept it? She

    only wanted to love her.

    Now her chest ached like never before and Tiffany clutched her shirt, burying it into her fist.

    Jessicas pain clawed her heart but she had to go on. If she lost her ability before she found

    them all, then it would haunt her forever. These belonged to Jessica.

    Two more. Tiffany snatched the second last. Another continuation to Jessicas story.

    Tiffany ran, hating herself more and more. She was stupid for falling in love with someone who

    didnt love her. She was stupid for wishing that one day shed see her as something more. She

    was stupid for not even being to comfort her at her time of need.

    No please no! she cried again as everything was disappearing in front of her. Tiffany rubbed

    her eyes, forcing them to see something, anything.

    Please, Tiffany begged. I need this. I need to find this for her.

  • Xylence

    Tiffany saw it one last time and she bounded forward. She ran to it, holding it before it could

    disappear again. Tiffany pressed her fist against her chest, pressed against her own heart.

    Tiffany had followed Jessica through the most painful day of her life and Tiffany was

    overwhelmed with happiness.

    Instead, Tiffany had given her false hope.

    Tiffany had forgotten what ended the memories that she held and that she had been following

    the path Jessica had gone through that night. A loud honk erupted from her right and Tiffanys

    head swerved, realizing what was coming at her.

    Everything disappeared in front of her, nothing to see, nothing to hear for she could hardly take

    in a single breath but her hand was still in a fist, holding pieces she would never let go of.

    Jessica sank to her knees beside her, the box in her hand falling, contents spilling. Her fingers

    touched hers, opening her tight fist. Jessica took the shards and dropped it to the side so that

    she could replace it with her hand. The heart really was fragile just like how anything precious

    was and to her, Tiffany was the most out of everything.

    Jessica slowly lay down beside her, not letting go of her hand for even a second. She no longer

    needed the pieces that Tiffany had collected for her nor any other to survive.

    She didnt need her past. All she wanted was their future. The pair of swans meant nothing now

    just like how the thought of staying was forgotten and unnecessary.

    Didnt I tell you Fany Fany Tiffany? she whispered softly to her, bringing Tiffanys hand to her

    lips. Jessica leaned Tiffanys head against her chest, letting her listen to the silence of her heart

    but she and Tiffany both knew that it was there and Jessica had used it to love her.

    Your heart is as bright as diamonds, as pure as crystals, as transparent as air and as strong as

    the love we share. I know because you have used it to love me and I wont ever let it break just

    like how Im going to be with you no matter where you are. Youre in me now and I wont let you

    leave because I will always be by your side.

    As deep as the sea, as beautiful as the heart, as terrifying as death, but as powerful as life.

    This is love.
